This Scottish actor first garnered attention in the black comedy Shallow Grave, then burst to the forefront with the lead in Trainspotting, both of which were directed by his frequent colleague Danny Boyle. After spending much of his early career in low-budget, independent films, he took on the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the second Star Wars series of movies which cemented his spot in the public eye. He became a major romantic lead after his role in Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman.
