Texan Matthew McConaughey leapt into the public eye with his first starring role as an empassioned young attorney in A Time to Kill, but he had success in film from the beginning, getting the first part he ever tried out for, in Dazed and Confused. He has since appeared in both independent films and features, and has moved into writing, directing and producing. Often compared to a young Paul Newman, his easy-going charm harkens back to the golden era of Hollywood.
