Wide Sargasso Sea is successful, and in it's own right. So why did the beautiful wife of a young Englishman get locked up and get labeled mad? Why the fire?

Jean Rhys story has been beautifully brought to film with Rebecca Hall making the romantic loves and losses of Antoinette believable. Her nude scenes leave little to the imagination inside the honeymoon Jamaican house. She throws herself into assuring the young Edward love her. If nudity and sexual situations offend, stop here. It's unrated but probably should be considered an R due to the fleshy parts.

It is 1830, and Antoinette forfeited all control of her 30,000 dowry. Does she not deserve passionate romance? But secrets and whispered tales abound. Antoinette is caught between the English and Jamaican worlds, owned by no one except...her now suspicious husband. Will her history destroy the future? You will feel for the heartbroken Antoinette through her unsuccessful attempts to lure back her Englishman's love. Who's right? Who's betrayed? Who's mad?

This is a 5-star book adaptation worth a second viewing, and then the third watch can be coupled with "Jane Eyre". Very well done by BBC Wales (Kudos) and then Acorn Media with the DVD.

B0014I7AQO23A3KILWJR8LF83RA3KILWJR8LF83RSandra KaneWHYTLYTPHOENIX, AZ United States52008-10-14STRANGEThis prequel is going to disappoint most Jane Eyre devotees. It is much more like a badly written romantic novel than a classic. If you must see it, check it out from your local library. I'm glad I did that rather than buy it as I found it to have more sex than substance and thought it overall....VERY STRANGE and not very entertaining. B0014I7AQO23A2RKYYD0TWFG6RA2RKYYD0TWFG6RB. E. SOETAda, Mi.52008-08-28Don't SeaI was so interested in a Jane Eyre "pre-quill" with hopes it that would really flesh out Mr. Rochester's early attraction to his Island wife. While the setting was lush, Mr. Rochester remained unlikeable, the barefoot Islanders sneaking in and out were randomly weird/ominous/friendly/........nothing - not even the steamy scenes - really put it all together. Big wide disappointment. B0014I7AQO51A14OJS0VWMOSWOA14OJS0VWMOSWOMidwest Book ReviewOregon, WI USA12008-07-12The movie adaptation of a novel written by Jean RhysWide Sargasso Sea is the movie adaptation of a novel written by Jean Rhys, as a deliberate prequel to Charlotte Bronte's classic tale "Jane Eyre". In the story, Rhys imagined how Mr. Rochester from "Jane Eyre" met and married his first wife, and how she became a madwoman in the attic. Set in early 1800s Jamaica, the young Englishman Edward Rochester (Rafe Spall) captivates the beautiful Creole heiress Antoinette Cosway (Rebecca Hall); yet the passionate lust of the newlyweds quickly gives way to suspicion, fear and betrayal. Originally aired in the United Kingdom, Wide Sargasso Sea is now available to American audiences on DVD with special features including a biography of Jean Rhys and cast filmographies. An absolute "must-see" for anyone who has enjoyed Charlotte Bronte's great works of literature. 84 min., color, widescreen, subtitles.
B0014I7AQO527ABF9TML1GLCJ6ABF9TML1GLCJ6Luca GraziusoNYC322008-07-01A masterpiece rendition of a literary masterpieceJean Rhys came to fame following her novel Wide Sargasso Sea. Most often the novel is read as a colonial-feminist corrective to Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. The madwoman in the attic is here given a voice through her daughter who reenacts a self-same fate. The merits of the novel are manifold, and it is an exceptional feat that here is a rendition of the narrative with such vivid emotional energy and lush psychological initmations that it must be regarded as a magical piece of moviemaking. Mind you, my ratings are on the main consevative, but it would be best to append cum laude to this quiet production. The cast is outstanding so much so that the nuances of the tale are diffracted with dexterity while retaining the ambiguity of the textual equivocations, whereby no one character is easily packaged in an easy interpretation. Rather we see the coils and wranglings of passion, culture, conceit, pride, diffidence and the allure for the "other" with such sparkling clarity through a spectrum of carnivalesque dialectics that each character unveils a personality both complex and of vertiginous depth. The texture of the plot thickens with every turn and the allusions to Jane Eyre transcend the indulgence of the passions lived by the two main protagonists and the "colonial markings" are traceable everywhere. Adumbrations of postcolonial trauma, the wretched of the earth of the Carribean so to say, inform the espousal of two culture with that jarring brush of victimhood that stems from a people of insurmountable resources and affectations that are illegible to its counterpart. History is brought in as necessary but always contextual and well-pleated within the unfolding of the story. The music, the landscape, the overall pulsing energy makes of this tale of madness a prism through which women speak the candor of their inner turmoil as men betray themselves in an attempt to civilize the mind and soul of the truly free. And please there is no romanticizing involved here. In fact, even nostalgia proper is absent. Romantic reservations climax upon a crisis of identity that is ostensible and undeniable. It is a snapshot of a picture that bleeds with emotional beauty, and where the mixing of blood is frustrated by a magical hex that seizes the protagonists in an impasse that is heartfelt and indelible. Picture perfect. But this collection, while interesting for Renoir fans in showing his movement away from 'realism' and towards more and more theatricality, is uneven. In 'Elena', even Ingrid Bergman can't save the clunky, predictable plot and the rather crass humour. 'The Golden Coach' pushes theatricality to the limit and becomes almost hysterical. The gem in the collection - and that which makes it worth acquiring - is 'French Can Can'. It too is a kind of fairy tale, but absolutely coherent and contained within its own terms. There's a toughness, even a cynicism, under the sentiment and tenderness. The frame is busy, filled with detail and life and sexiness - and Jean Gabin (France's Spencer Tracy) is as charming as ever.B00026L75E51AI0OAQ6E2O8VFAI0OAQ6E2O8VFTed M.Ted M.Pennsylvania, USA22005-02-21A fine compilation of great filmsThis 3 disc box set by Criterion contains three of Jean Renoir's color films made in the 1950's.

The first film is "The Golden Coach" known in France as "Le carrousee d'or" it is the story of Spanish colonists in Central America. The film is intended as a comedy and contains some fine scenes. It is very well written and the Vivaldi score is great also. The film is in English which is rare for French films.

The second film is "French Cancan" which was previously released in the US as "Only the French Can" It depicts the grand opening of the world famous French nightclub, Moulin Rouge. The film has great acting and appearencec by some famous performers including the great French singer Edith Piaf. As anyone could expect, the film contains Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld" in the score and an excellent finale scene of women dancing the cancan. I think that the film is one of finest examples of French cinema depicting the performing arts.

The third film, "Elena and her Men" known in France as "Eléna et les hommes" is the story of a princess from Poland who is very attractive to the men around her. Some of the elite class begin to fight over her resulting in the instability of French society. The film has an excellent performance by Ingrid Bergman as the princess and has some fine scenery.

Each disc includes special features some of which are very good.

Disc 1 contains "The Golden Coach" with seperate introductions to the film by Jean Renoir and Martin Scorsesse, production stills and the first part of a three part interview with Jean Renoir originally set for French television.

Disc 2 contains "French Cancan" with an introduction by Peter Bogdanovich, the 2nd part of the afforementioned 3 part interview, production stills and an interview with set designer Max Douy.

Disc 3 contains "Elena and her Men" along with an introduction by Renior, production stills, the 3rd part of the interview and the second half of a 1990's British TV documentary on Renior.

This box set is a very fine collection of Renoir's films and a must buy for Renoir fans.B00026L75E523A2WAJWFB6ZPEGWA2WAJWFB6ZPEGWToshifumi FujiwaraTokyo, Japan232005-01-04Renoir's color trilogy: funny, entertaining, yet profoundThe three color films that mark Jean Renoir's return to Europe might be surprising compared to his classics 30's films like RULES OF THE GAME, LA BETE HUMAINE, TONI or GRAND ILLUSION, with which Renoir became prominent as a master of realism. For instance, always preferring to shoot on location rather than in studio environments (TONI was one of the first major sound motion picture to be entrely shot on location with direct sound recording; a revolution at the time).

THE GOLDEN COACH, FRENCH CANCAN and ELENA AND HER MEN are deliberately artificial, stylized, and burlesque. Note for instance the framings in THE GOLDEN COACH, in which Claude Renoir's camera is consciously and carefully placed to achieve symmetrical compositions. In comparison to the moving camera techniques of GRAND ILLUSION and RULES OF THE GAME that allowed him to capture the actions without missing the many crucial details in one, continuous long take, these three films (especially COACH and ELENA) may look very static. The acting style is also very much over the top.

One of the supplements, the Jacques Rivette's interview, in which Renoir repeatingly insists that "truth" or "reality" can be only achieved through artifice and artifacts of the artistic medium, is extremely revealing about Renoir's changing his style, and that though the apparent style has changed, his philosophy about filmmaking is remarkably consistent.

These three films are also created as comedies, though the contents are some of the most serious themes treated in cinema, and have a lot to do with cinema itself as a performing/representational art form. For each of the three films is profound analysis about performing in human life. FRENCH CANCAN is about the nature of performers, and the difficulties of that profession. THE GOLDEN COACH and ELENA AND HER MEN are, among other things, political farces, based on the extremely cynical idea that politics are nothing else but a matter of performance. Arguably, only Renoir could depict those themes as light-hearted comedies.

Some notes should be made on the transfers of this new DVD edition. ELENA was shot with Eastmancolor film stock (one strip negative), and the transfer is created from the original negative. Excepts for optically-treated segments (dissolves and fade outs, fade ins) which show severe color fading, the DVD represents very much what the film should look like. And those color fadings are practically impossible to fix with today's technology.

THE GOLDEN COACH and FRENCH CANCAN were originally shot with 3-strips Technicolor cameras. This system requires 3 B/W negatives running simultaneously, each of them recording one primary color. So it is impossible to just scan the original negatives to get the most faithful images. The DVD transfers for these 2 films are created from interpositives. For FRENCH CANCAN, it seems that a vintage dye-transfer print was used, and though it shows certain damages caused by age, the DVD represents faithfully the texture and details such as the material quality of the clothings that can be only captured on a dye-transfer Technicolor print, as well as the rather pale, pastel-like color palette that Renoir and art director Max Douy intended to depict the period: the story takes place in the heights of impressionism paintings.

For THE GOLDEN COACH, the print used for the transfer is probably from the restoration and re-release in the early 90's (Martin Scorsese financed the American distribution; hence his introduction on the DVD). This restoration was important since before that, the film was virtually invisible, but nevertheless not a perfect one technically speaking. It does not have the richness of color of a dye-transfer Technicolor prints, particularly the reds and the blacks suffer a lot. Plus, certain shots, especially the extremely moving and revealing epilogue in which Renoir confesses through Camilla-Anna Magnani the sadness of working in performing arts, suffer a lot from the different shrinkage of each color-separation negatives. The colors are nearly dead, and they look out of focus. It's a pity that unlike the American studio's Technicolor classics with which a lot of financial and technical efforts are constantly made to put them back into shape, THE GOLDEN COACH, one of the greatest masterpieces of this color-format, is not yet properly restored.

Criterion has already put GRAND ILLUSION and RULES OF THE GAME on market with beautiful DVD editions. Now, watching this new DVD sets, and especially watching the supplement BBC documentary about Renoir's career after the 40's, I must say that now they have to publish Renoir's first color film THE RIVER, which is one of the less-known masterpiece of Renoir's as well as a key film for the evolution of his style, on a DVD edition as accomplished as these.B00026L75E54A6ADO7B6FUVNA6ADO7B6FUVNKim Anehallwww.cinematica.orgChicago, IL USA52004-09-29Renoir Brilliantly Expresses His Love for the Arts & Life...GOLDEN COACH (1953) - 9/10

Golden Coach is the first film of a loosely put together trilogy with themes of love and life on the stage made by Jean Renoir. This film is also a salutation to the French people as Renoir returns to to France after having fled during World War II and trying to make it in Hollywood. However, Renoir had much difficulty dealing with influential movie producers in Hollywood as they often kept Renoir under strict supervision. This supervision made Renoir feel somewhat strangled when it cames to artistic freedom, which is also expressed in this trilogy.

The Golden Coach takes place in 18th century Peru where the Spanish viceroy of Peru has purchased a golden coach from Italy in order to symbolically display the might of the colony. A small Italian theater troupe trails the Golden Coach as they voyage on the same ship across the Atlantic to the new world. When the theater troupe arrives to the town where they have been promised a job with several luxuries they find a pitiful small town with no commodities as promised in the employment letter. Deprived of hope they begin to build a small stage where they can perform and maybe earn enough to return to Europe.

The theater troupes unspoken star is Camilla (Anna Magnani) whom most men find delicately alluring as her mere presence absorbs all the attention from the audience as she flourish on the stage. Camilla's charisma attracts three prominent men's attention as all three fall in love with her. The protective Spanish soldier, Felipe (Paul Campbell), traveled with her across the Atlantic as he tries to charm her and win her over. The fiery and infamous toreador Ramon (Riccardo Rioli) who has been spellbound by Camilla's stage performance tries to sway her into marriage. Lastly, the Spanish viceroy Ferdinand (Duncan Lamont) is drawn to her as he finds himself being prepared to give up the Golden Coach to her. Felipe, Ramon, and Ferdinand find themselves in trouble as they are all attracted to Camilla who never will belong to one of them as she loves the stage.

Jean Renoir hired a small Italian family circus to perform in the film as the theater troupe. The only film actor in the theater troupe is Anna Magnani who performs brilliantly as Renoir entirely built the film around her. The film becomes a tribute to Italian theater as much of the film surrounds theater and the mise-en-scene is symbolically a theater set. However, the strongest tribute to theater comes through Camilla's love for the stage and the audience's love for her. Renoir was also influenced by Vivaldi's music which inspired the script's Italian zest, which offers a terrific cinematic experience that is both witty, warm, and full of valuable lessons.

FRENCH CANCAN (1955) - 9/10

The second part of Jean Renoir trilogy about the love for the stage is a colorful story about the vaudeville manager Henri Danglard (Jean Gabin) and his rejuvenation of an old frolicsome dance called the cancan. Danglard is more of an artist than a manager as his ultimate goal is self-expression, which he projects to the audience through the performances of a large number of artists. These artist have all been discovered through Danglard's incredible instincts to find talent among ordinary people and turn them into celebrities over night. The skillful Danglard also loves the critical audience as he seeks their approval through a violent flow of applause.

The story begins in successful cafe, Le Paravent Chinois, with vaudeville performances that heavily depend on Lola de Castro's (María Félix) performance. Lola is also Danglard's mistress, but what the audience does not know is that Danglard spends every penny to improve the show in order to conquer the audience's approval. This leads Le Paravent Chinois into bankruptcy, but it does not bother Danglard as he is aware of the existing financial potential in Paris. This means that Danglard is self-assured in that he will find another sponsor for his new project, which is the French Cancan. The quest for the French Cancan becomes a difficult struggle as Danglard must face jealous mistresses and boyfriends, physical harm, and much more. However, this does not prevent Danglard to continue to strive to create his final masterpiece, which will become the initiation of the Moulin Rouge.

Jean Renoir's French Cancan becomes a root for self-expression as he nose dives into his own artistic talent where he uses the cancan dance as an allegory for self-expressive freedom and artistic originality. The film also became a reunion between two cinematic titans, Gabin and Renoir, as they made some brilliant films together almost two decades ago. Gabin becomes Renoir's alter ego in this cinematic event as he displays Renoir's love for the arts through rejuvenation of the cancan. It should be mentioned that Gabin was personally offended by Renoir's escape to United States during World War II and his delayed return to France after the war. Nonetheless, these two men came together and created a brilliant cinematic experience that honors the arts and stage performances.

ELENA AND HER MEN (1956) - 8/10

Elena and Her Men is the final film in Renoir's trilogy of stage performances. This is a light-hearted film with serious undertones loosely based on General Georges Boulanger's attempt to reverse the popularity of the Republic in France with his own popularity in the 1880s. The history books reveal the truth of General Georges Boulanger's failed coup as he was strongly supported by Orleanist and Bonapartist princes. In this story, General Georges Boulanger is renamed General Rollan (Jean Marais), but the story is focused on the main character Elena (Ingrid Bergman).

The liberal Polish Princess Elena seeks to change the world for the better by her standards by inspiring men to pursue their dreams and urge them to seek a higher calling. In the initial scene it becomes apparent that Elena has already succeeded once as a composer and has received an immense career boost through Elena's' encouragement, but the composer's marriage proposal is declined by the self-reliant Elena. Elena's independence and liberal mind is noticeable as she mingles on the crowded streets of Paris as the people celebrate General Rollan's return from a successful campaign. Elena is strongly affected by the people's cheers for General Rollan as she begins to pursue a way to meet General Rollan. When they meet it is obvious that General Rollan has strong affections for Elena, which will play a large part in the films outcome.

Film viewers that have seen other films by Jean Renoir will easily detect the mise-en-scene as it reproduces a staged atmosphere, which produces theater atmosphere. Nonetheless, it will not ruin the film as Renoir tells an intelligent story with different plots and schemes as he also did in Rules of the Game (1939), which has several similarities with Elena and Her Men. These different plots are all told in a delicate satirical light as they convey a serious message that will offer much thought for the viewers that engage themselves in Elena and Her Men.

CRITERION

Criterion does a stunningly skillful work to put these three films together in a box that symbolically matches the colors presented in the films. Any film enthusiast will recognize the good work done by the Criterion Company. Lastly, the additional information on the DVDs will further the cinematic education of the audience.
B00026L75E40A29QA79VLQGHY6A29QA79VLQGHY6Flipper CampbellMiami Florida02004-08-25Party time for RenoirEarly this year, Criterion issued the definitive DVD of Jean Renoir's 1939 classic "The Rules of the Game." Now, the label lightens up with "Stage and Spectacle," a boxed set that makes a trilogy out of the splashy Technicolor films Renoir made upon returning to Europe in the mid-1950s.

Renoir was in a mood to party. He'd survived an unhappy decade exiled in the Hollywood studio system. The director felt liberated, much like his homeland, France.

And so we have two bawdy celebrations of life and theater: "The Golden Coach," starring life force Anna Magnani (1953), and "French Cancan," a snappy and wise backstage comedy (1955). "Elena and Her Men" (1956) exudes romance with Ingrid Bergman as a savvy and desirable Polish princess toying with French politics. Plots are thin; spirits are high. All of the films are filled with boisterous, dizzying crowd scenes.

"The frames remind me of his father's paintings," Martin Scorsese says in an introduction to "Coach." "It's like standing in the presence of a great fresco and being overwhelmed. ... The use of color is extraordinary."

Alas, Renoir's palette has withered. All of these (restored) films show their age. Witness the sustained flashing in "Coach," abrupt shifts in color tone in "Elena" and the oddly bleached-out scenes in "Cancan." But making allowances, the visuals remain magnificent, memorable. The films are all full frame. Mono audio is bright and serviceable.

Renoir, who died in 1979, loved talking about his work. Clips of him are featured throughout the DVD set. The filmmaker sits with new wave director Jacques Rivette for a subtitled interview -- a monologue, really -- that's spread across the three DVDs. It's a terrific but long-winded lecture on the craft of filmmaking.

The BBC documentary on Renoir's career that began on "The Rules of the Game" DVD continues here, covering mostly the director's Hollywood years under the thumb of Darryl F. Zanuck and other studio chiefs. The making of the three joyous films found in this set serves as a happy ending, of sorts.DescriptionNear the end of his long and celebrated career, master filmmaker Jean Renoir indulged his lifelong obsession with life-as-theater and directed The Golden Coach (1953), French Cancan (1955), and Elena and Her Men (1956), three delirious films, infatuated with the past, love, and artifice. Awash in jubilant Technicolor, each film interweaves public display and private feelings through the talents of three immortal film icons#Anna Magnani, Jean Gabin, and Ingrid Bergman. The Criterion Collection is proud to present these three majestic films by Jean Renoir for the first time on DVD.Amazon.comThese three Jean Renoir films were not conceived as a trilogy, but they fit beautifully together in this Criterion package: all luscious with theatrical color, wry in tone, and awestruck by beautiful women. When Renoir returned to Europe after his wartime exile in Hollywood, he first turned to The Golden Coach (1953), an international co-production shot in Rome. It contains all of Renoir's love of the theatrical life, as a traveling troupe of actors arrives in a colonial town in South America, and the leading lady (lightning-quick Anna Magnani) bewitches her many suitors--yet knows she is most brilliantly alive when she is on stage. The film was shot in multiple languages; this is the English, which Renoir preferred.
French Cancan is perhaps the greatest backstage movie ever made. Jean Gabin plays a stage impresario of the 1880s (surely a stand-in for Renoir himself), hatching a plan to revive the naughty can-can and school a young ingenue (Francoise Arnoul) in the rigors of art and life. With 1956's Elena and Her Men, Renoir relies on the effortless beauty of Ingrid Bergman, as a Polish princess juggling devotees (including Jean Marais as a smitten general, for whom love trumps politics every time). While not a woman of the theater, Elena understands the value of putting on a show.
The Criterion box is an authoritative pleasure (including the pretty packaging), featuring best-possible visual transfers. Excellent archival introductions to Elena and Golden Coach are delivered by Renoir himself, shot sometime in the 1960s; Peter Bogdanovich provides a solid 10-minute talk on Cancan. A one-hour-plus, three-part Renoir interview, conducted by New Wave filmmaker-critic Jacques Rivette, is spread across all three discs; Renoir is in fascinating, aphoristic form ("Intelligence is terrible. It makes us do stupid things"). Part of an informative BBC documentary, Jean Renoir: Hollywood and Beyond, is bundled with Elena. Essays by the likes of Andrew Sarris and Jonathan Rosenbaum provide context for Renoir's celebratory but unsparing look at the intersection of Art and Life. --Robert HortonB000N2HBIOJean Renoir 3-Disc Collector's Edition (Whirlpool of Fate / Nana / Charleston Parade / La Marseillaise / The Doctor's Horrible Experiment / The Elusive Corporal)B0007989WUThe River - Five out of the six shorts on this disc feature Shemp Howard as the third Stooge, and for those of you who do not like Shemp, I would suggest that you PLEASE give him another chance; he was a damn good comedian!

One of my personal favorite Three Stooges films, included on this disc, is "Punchy Cowpunchers" (1950), a hilarious comedy Western directed by the capable Edward Bernds and featuring a great music score and the fine acting talents of such wonderful supporting players as Jock Mahoney, Vernon Dent, Christine McIntyre, Emil Sitka, Dick Wessel, and Kenneth MacDonald. "Dopey Dicks" (1950) is a superlative detective film which features McIntyre, Philip Van Zandt, and Stanley Price within a spooky haunted house story. "Vagabond Loafers" (1949) is a hilarious plumbing episode, a remake of "A Plumbing We Will Go" (1940). "Out West" (1947) and "Merry Mavericks" (1951) are two more fast-paced Westerns, and "Cactus Makes Perfect" (1942), the only short on this disc to feature Curly Howard as the third Stooge, is another fine gold-digging short that takes place way out west! Enjoy the disc!B00005B1W831ADI65VATAI5STADI65VATAI5STBrenda Wadsworth12006-11-07The Three Stooges Merry MavericksThis stooges DVD is not the best out there but if you are a huge Shemp fan then this is the DVD for you. There are not a lot of stooge DVD's that have Shemp in them but Merry Mavericks is all Shemp except for Cactus Makes Perfect. Here is my rating for each episode:

1. Cactus Makes Perfect- Moe, Larry, & Curly: A good short probably the best one on the DVD. 4/5 stars

2. Out West- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: I am not a huge fan of westerns especially if my favorite comedy duo is in them. I found this short to be awful. In my opinion all the the western shorts the stooges made except a couple are awful. 2/5 stars

3. Vagabond Loafers- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one was good even though it is sort of a remake of the famous Curly short A Plumbing We Will Go, it still was decent although Shemp redoing Curly's role was awful and there are not too many stooge shorts with Shemp in them that are awful but his part in this one was terrible. 3/5 stars

4. Dopey Dicks- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one in my opinion is the second best Shemp stooge short right behind The Brideless Groom. Dopey Dicks is another stooge spook episode and is really funny. 5/5 stars

5. Punchy Cowpunchers- Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one was just awful I did not crack a smile at all when I watched it. 1/5 stars

6. Merry Mavericks: Moe, Larry, & Shemp: This one was a remake of Phony Express and it was ok but not as good as when Curly did Phony Express. 3/5 stars

All and all this one is not the best Three Stooges DVD out there but like I said if you are a Shemp fan then this one is worth the money. B00005B1W831A62G4QX6XQVLPA62G4QX6XQVLPAnyechkaRensselaer, NY United States12006-08-17Not that greatThis may quite possibly be the weakest DVD in this series, even including the colorised DVDs. There are a few great shorts here, but most of them are pretty dull and unmemorable. The title short in particular is just awful. The boys did some Westerns that were pretty good, but more often than not they just didn't seem believable, let alone even funny, as slow-witted dopey cowboys. This is not high-calibre material being represented.

The shorts themselves:

'Cactus Makes Perfect' (1942) is perhaps a bit above average, though it's not that memorable or great. At least they're not playing dopey cowboys in this one, even though it does take place out West, but it's still pretty slow-paced. The opening scene is great, but it gets really slow-paced after they go West to try out Curly's useless invention, a machine that finds gold buttons when an arrow is launched.

'Vagabond Loafers' (1949) is one of the few great shorts on here. It's largely a remake of the 1940 classic 'A-Plumbing We Will Go,' though it's not a complete remake. The plot is somewhat different in that the boys are actually plumbers and not just pretending to be plumbers to evade the police. There's also the subplot of Mr. and Mrs. Allen (Christine McIntyre and Kenneth MacDonald) stealing the old valuable painting at the mansion of Mr. and Mrs. Norfleet (Symona Boniface and Emil Sitka). Actually, there's far more of a plot to this one than there was in the original, though I do personally prefer the original. However, even though it's at least used pretty sparsely here as compared to what would start happening more and more just a few years down the road, there is some stock footage here of the original. Most of it is Dudley Dickerson's scene in the kitchen, where all of the appliances suddenly start shooting out water, but the other reused footage isn't really consistent with the new footage. If we're supposed to believe that this short is taking place at night, then why are the scenes of Larry searching for the shutoff valve taking place in broad daylight?

'Dopey Dicks' (1950) is widely regarded as one of the best Shemp shorts, and while I personally don't hugely care for the mystery/detective genre, I can recognise and appreciate how great it is. The premise is kind of a reworking of 'A Bird in the Head' (1946), though this is obviously the better and stronger short (not least because this time the third Stooge was healthy and in top form instead of looking and acting really sickly). It also has a real film noir feel to it, both in the plot and in the great lighting and shadows. And since this short is one of the "Missing 60," it's great to see it finally released instead of sitting away unseen with a bunch of other great shorts.

'Out West' (1947) is somewhat above average, and possibly their best Western of the Shemp era. Though it does have that same slow-paced feel to it and the unrealistic portrayal of our heroes as dopey cowboys, it does have more funny moments than usual in these Westerns. It's also hard to tell if this is meant as a parody of Westerns or is supposed to be an actual Western itself, since it has elements that would suggest both scenarios. And since this was only the second short made after Shemp rejoined the team, he still hadn't perfected his character yet. It's plain to see how well he fit back in after so many years away, but he still needed a little time to work on his new screen character, and this was after all still a time when everyone thought he was only going to be doing this temporarily instead of for the rest of his life.

'Punchy Cowpunchers' (1950) is pretty dull, though it does have some moments. It's easily one of the worst of the Shemp era. Once more there's a slow pace and a sense of disbelief at how the boys are supposed to be stupid slow-witted cowpokes. Yes, in their non-Western shorts, they do act pretty stupid, but when it all boils down, observant viewers know that it's just an act, that they're actually smarter and wittier than a lot of the people around them. Extremely unmemorable.

'Merry Mavericks' (1951) may very possibly be the absolute worst Shemp short, or at least the absolute worst original short. (Remakes consisting of like 90% stock footage and a few minutes of new material, usually very inconsistent with the old material, like 'Fling in the Ring' and 'Flagpole Jitters,' are in their own category of terribleness.) Completely boring and unfunny, very unmemorable, hokey, slow-paced, you name it. It's also a remake of 'Phony Express' (1943), which wasn't so great either, but at least wasn't as awful as this. Marion Martin as Gladys is also a poor substitute for the beautiful talented Christine McIntyre, and Don Harvey is similarly a poor substitute for Kenneth MacDonald. It's also quite possibly the worst short directed by the usually great Ed Bernds (at least his weak shorts from 1946 can be excused given Curly's poor health). There are almost no words to describe just how dreadful this short is, though I suppose it is better than the four shorts where we're supposed to make believe that the back of Joe Palma's head is really Shemp.

Overall, this isn't a very good collection of shorts. It's very telling that the two best shorts have nothing to do with the Old West theme (though it's certainly far from the only disc where not all of the shorts match the supposed "theme"). The Stooges just seem more funny, realistic, and believable as city boys, working as exterminators, detectives, garbage men, gas station attendants, salesmen, that sort of thing, not stupid slow-witted cowboys. And though I don't really care for that many of their Westerns anyway, at least the Curly era ones had better scripts. As great as it is to see more of the Shemp shorts on DVD, one wishes that better ones had been selected in lieu of dull dreadful entries like 'Merry Mavericks' and 'Punchy Cowpunchers.' B00005B1W852A1IKOYZVFHO1XPA1IKOYZVFHO1XPandy8047Nokomis,Florida22004-05-21The four StoogesI say "the four Stooges" because this collection features Moe,Larry,Curly and Shemp. CACTUS MAKES PERFECT,the only short with Curly,is where the Stooges hunt for gold with their new invention,a "goldfinder",which is more like a standard metal dectector. In OUT WEST,the Stooges go out west primarily for the sake of Shemp's unhealthy leg. In PUNCHY COWPUNCHERS,the Stooges are sent to the Panhandle country to capture the Killer Dillons. In MERRY MAVERICKS,the Stooges are wanted for vagrancy just like in an earlier film with Curly,PHONY EXPRESS. In VAGABOND LOAFERS,a remake of another Curly short,A-PLUMBING WE WILL GO,the Stooges as plumbers wreck havoc, and during a couple's party. In DOPEY DICKS,the Stooges as private eyes, rescue a kidnapped beauty from a labrotory. Great support from Christine McIntyre who appeared in OW,VL,DD and PC. Curly was still alive, but terminally ill when his brother Shemp's shorts were made.B00005B1W842A32OSPI06T9I6LA32OSPI06T9I6LLoren S. Shevitza cappella enthusiastChicago, IL United States22002-06-21finally, some hint that's it's a DVD!They finally did something nice for the DVD opening. There's a short series with still photos and sound effects that shows the boys "in action". They still should put many more shorts on one DVD, though. The ones that did make it are funny, of course. Shemp is a very underrated member of the team.Product Description
Include six shorts, including:

Cactus Makes Perfect (1942): When Curly's invention - a gold finder - is deemed "incomprehensible and utterly impractical," the Stooges think it means they're sitting on a gold mine, and go west to find one and rake in their fortunes.

Out West (1947): The Stooges get a leg up on some bad dudes when they head west for a therapeutic vacation to heal the bad win in Shemp's leg. But when they mosey into a saloon, they stumble into the middle of a love triangle between a dirty dealer, a saloon waitress and boyfriend, known as the Arizona Kid.

Vagabond Loafers (1949): Who's the biggest drip: Larry, Shemp or Moe? It's hard to say, but when the Stooges' plumbing company is hired to fix a leak in a mansion, they turn the slippery circumstances to their advantage and foil a pair of art thieves who've stolen a $50,000 painting.

Dopey Dicks (1950): The Stooges almost lose their heads - literally - when they rescue the dame they met while cleaning a private detective's office, who has been kidnapped by a mad professor seeking human brains for translation.

Punchy Cowpunchers (1950): Being a Stooge isn't all it's cracked up to be. A commanding officer sends Moe, Larry and Shemp on a mission to confront merciless outlaws The Dillion Gang. But when Shemp hides in the safe that they're about to crack open, it's the Dillions who wind up begging for mercy.

Merry Mavericks (1951): This reworking of Phony Express features a few new plot twists and just as many laughs. It looks like the Stooges are going to lose their battle with bank boards! LovinsMr. JimMissouri-USA02006-12-19"The Durango Kid B-Western Series ... Blazing Across the Pecos (1948) ... Columbia Pictures"Columbia Pictures present "BLAZING ACROSS THE PECOS" (1948) (54 mins/B&W) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Charles Starrett as the black masked Durango Kid of '40s and '50s B-Western trail, he became as synonymous with the character as Clayton Moore was with the Lone Ranger and William Boyd was to Hopalong Cassidy ... The Durango Kid was an immediate hit with Saturday matinee crowd and a decision was made to continue the character, which Columbia did for an unprecedented 64 series westerns over the next seven years ... when Starrett portrayed the black clad and masked Durango Kid, he rode an Arabian white steed named "Raider" ... don't miss any of the Durango Kid features loaded with action that will leave you wanting more of his B-Western adventures.

Under Ray Nazarro (Director), Colbert Clark - Producer), Norman Hall - Screenwriter), Paul Sawtell (Original Music), Ira H. Morgan (Cinematographer), Richard Fantl (Editor) ------ the cast includes Charles Starrett (Steve Blake/Durango Kid), Smiley Burnette (Marshal Smiley Burnette), Patricia Barry (Lola Carter), Paul Campbell (Editor Jim Traynor), Charles C. Wilson (Ace Brockway), Thomas E. Jackson (Matt Carter), Red Arnall (Band Leader Red Arnall (as Red Arnall and The Western Aces), The Western Aces (Saloon musicians (as Red Arnall and The Western Aces) ------ our story has the masked defender of law and order The Durango Kid protecting the rights of Thomas E. Jackson against Charles C. Wilson from Indian attacks ... is Wilson trying to drive Jackson out of business on his trading post ... can The Durango Kid out smart the baddies in this exciting Columbia oater, is Marshal Smiley Burnette still trying to figure out who is the real Durango Kid ... never fear our hero will win out and with the musical talents of Burnette to help us over the bumpy trail ---- they just don't make 'em like this anymore and Columbia Pictures was one of the leaders of exciting B-Westerns and Serials.

Special Footnote, Charles Starrett was an American actor best known for his starring role in the "Durango Kid" Columbia Pictures western series ... In 1933 he was one of the people who helped organize the Screen Actors Guild, and in 1936 signed with Columbia Pictures to become one of the top ten western stars, starring in 115 movies the following 16 years ... in playing assorted sheriff and rangers roles, Starrett gained notoriety for his role as the "Durango Kid", the first film in which he played his famous alter-ego character was known as "The Durango Kid", which was released in 1940, but for some reason, Columbia did not see fit to continue with the series at that time ... the character was revived in 1944 and lasted through 1952. Dub Taylor, as "Cannonball", worked with Starrett until 1946 ... at that time, Smiley Burnette, who had been a very popular sidekick to Gene Autry, was brought in to replace Taylor. Burnette, appropriately enough, played a character called Smiley Burnette ... "The Durango Kid" series combined vigorous action sequences - often with speeded up camera work and spectacular stunts performed by Jock Mahoney - and western music ... each film featured a singing group, and many gave free rein to Burnette's singing and playing ... Starrett, who was independently wealthy, ended his acting career at 48 age when the "Durango Kid" series ceased production.

BIOS:
1. CatheyParsifalCSAWendell, NC United States72005-05-16Better than average Durango....I found this DVD for $9.99, and was pleased that Sony/Columbia has begun to put some of the Durango Kid releases on DVD. Blazing Across the Pecos is indeed entertaining. True, the plot is simple and tried, but unlike a couple of other reviewers, I believe this B-Western does hold interest, and, with such stand-outs as Smiley Burnette and Jock Mahoney, is fun to watch. You can't go wrong with a Durango Kid. Print quality is superb. Now, let's hope Sony will release a lot more Durangos [Bonanza Town is also out]. They've begun to put out some Randy Scott, Glenn Ford, and other "A" Westerners. During the late 1940s (with G. Autry and Ch. Starrett) and later in the 1950s (with Scott, Ford, and others) Columbia Pictures did justice to the Western movie genre. Now that Platinum Disc has released about 40 Hopalong Cassidy movies (all digitally remastered prints), Sony might think about putting out nicely-priced sets of Durangos....

I do wish someone at Warner would consider some of the 1950s Randolph Scott Westerns, as well. While they generally weren't as well-produced as the Columbias, several of them (e.g., Carson City, Seven Men from Now, Westbound, Fort Worth, Colt .45) are superior and deserve to be put on DVD....B0002KPI1413AK61LQI92GTCHAK61LQI92GTCHSteven HellerstedtSH52005-03-29Blazing Across the Pecos Voice over - "The greatest enemies to the civilization of the West were the white men" (on screen we see gun toting, whooping and hollering half-naked savages attacking an outpost) "who, through greed, armed the savages..."
It's been a long time since I've bailed out on a movie (that I've paid good money for, purchase or rental, that is) but I came close with BLAZING ACROSS THE PECOS, a Durango Kid western starring Charles Starrett as the Durango Kid. Starrett played the masked crime-fighter (with an unmasked alter ego, of course) well over 50 times in the 1940s and 50s. Think Roy Rogers or Gene Autry without the singing ability or audience appeal.
In any event, I watched the whole 55-minutes of this thing. A bad hombre and henchman are selling guns to the indians and trying to drive out the decent merchants in town in the process. Smiley Burnette, kind of a poor man's Andy Devine, plays town Sheriff Smiley Burnette. The story is interrupted, or relieved, or suspended, three times for songs by the western swing band Red Arnall and His Western Aces.
There are wagon train attacks, stagecoach ambushes, shoot outs with desperados, and any number of time fillers that are remarkably unexciting. Somehow, with Burnette in tow, the Durango Kid learns of the skullduggery and through great deeds of daring manages to foil the bad guy's nefarious plot.
It's not fair to judge a long series like this on just one episode, but it's one of less than a handful Columbia has released and they ain't asking peanuts for it, either. Unless you absolutely have to have a Durango Kid collecting dust on the shelf, you'd do better buying a cheaper, and more entertaining, Gene Autry or Roy Rogers set. Not recommended at all.
B0002KPI1452APU6HGM4LELEUAPU6HGM4LELEUWard T. KnickerbockerNELSON, PA United States22005-03-18great durango kidThis is a great dvd. others have said this is not.
