I especially like the lullaby Kaye sings early in the film. Add first-rate songs to first-rate writing, spot-on performances, lush art direction and brilliant editing, and you've got one of the best comedies ever made for the screen. The swordfight, impeccably choreographed, is even better than the ones in "Princess Bride"; "Maladjusted Jester" is a delight you'll want to see over and over; the knighthood scene is a howler, and of course "the vessel with the pestle" is a classic of American culture. When they start considering film as literature in the schools, this classic should be in the basic overview. And kids, generations removed from its making, still love it.
Personal note: I introduced my daughter to this when she was in her teens, when "Murder She Wrote" was her only exposure to Angela Lansbury. She sat up and shouted, "Mom! Mom! Angela Lansbury was a BABE!!!" 079215519X50A32UNN3XCXVFEMA32UNN3XCXVFEMD.
Danny Kaye's role as the court jester was great. The movie is so clean that my own children and even grandchildren will enjoy it. What a great way to pass on the classics. I was very happy with the description on line. I had no questions about the movie being the same as I had seen and enjoyed as a child. Product DescriptionKaye plays a court jester who becomes involved with outlaws trying to overthrow the king.
Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
Rating: NR
Release Date: 2-MAY-2006
Media Type: DVDAmazon.comDanny Kaye spoofs Robin Hood and Scaramouche in this inventive slapstick swashbuckler. Portraying the clownish but good-hearted entertainer Hawkins, he infiltrates the court of the corrupt Basil Rathbone (up to his usual brand of cruel villainy) disguised as the legendary king of jesters, Giacomo. After a court sorceress hypnotizes Hawkins into believing he is also a legendary assassin, Hawkins has more identities than he can keep straight, and Kaye zips back and forth between them at, literally, a snap of the fingers. Comic highlights include a wonderful sword fight with Rathbone in which he constantly switches identities, and the classic "chalice from the palace/vessel with pestle" wordplay as Hawkins plays "hide the poison" and forgets where it is. With comely Glynis Johns as his spy-in-arms love interest, Angela Lansbury as the scheming princess, and Mildred Natwick as the dotty spellcaster, this is Danny Kaye at his comic best. --Sean AxmakerB000056H2AHans Christian AndersenB0000AGWJ3The Inspector GeneralB000BDH6B2The Five PenniesB000ND91Z4On the RivieraB000EWD1KKThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty [Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo]163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163350General163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291110Assumed Identity291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video523936Classic Comedies163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722746011General AAS163378Parody & Spoof163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163376Satire163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163377Slapstick163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163417General163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video722769011General AAS507990Classics163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video595062Family Films163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video524760Classics163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video577342Comedy163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722786011General AAS163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722783011General AAS508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411058Ashley, Edward409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416702Carradine, John416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429978Johns, Glynis429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430804Kaye, Danny430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432572Lansbury, Angela432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437220Middleton, Robert434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438818Napier, Alan438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438868Natwick, Mildred438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440620Parker, Cecil440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440794Pate, Michael440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442836Rathbone, Basil442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444572Rudley, Herbert442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456866Frank, Melvin456580( F )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video460646Panama, Norman460606( P )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234081All Paramount3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234111Classics3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234121Comedy3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - Everything about this production pops, from the stunning cinematography, to the incredible cast, the excellent score, and Ford's impeccable direction. There are so many memorable scenes ( that were to be 'borrowed' in other lesser westerns repeatedly ) in this classic that it almost seems unfair to label it by genre. It is a great western. It is a wonderful actioner. It is an excellent social commentary. On top of that it is also a first-rate character study. Wayne looms very large in this pic, and from his first close-up, there is little doubt of his star quality.B000O59A0254A1J03J0HZ7KU5TA1J03J0HZ7KU5TScott RiversLos Angeles, CA USA42009-03-07The Western That Started It AllThroughout the 1930s, Westerns were considered "B-movie" fodder until John Ford's influential classic placed the genre back in the "A" category. "Stagecoach" (1939) not only revitalized the Western, but marked the beginning of Ford's iconic partnership with John Wayne and the director's introduction to breathtaking Monument Valley. The Duke received second billing in a legendary ensemble featuring Claire Trevor, George Bancroft, John Carradine and Thomas Mitchell (in his Oscar-winning role as the drunken Doc Boone). The John Ford classic that won two Academy Awards(R) and made John Wayne a star. Year: 1939 Director: John Ford Starring: Claire Trevor, John Wayne, Andy Devine,Amazon.com essential videoThis landmark 1939 Western began the legendary relationship between John Ford and John Wayne, and became the standard for all subsequent Westerns. It solidified Ford as a major director and established Wayne as a charismatic screen presence. Seen today, Stagecoach still impresses as the first mature instance of a Western that is both mythic and poetic. The story about a cross-section of troubled passengers unraveling under the strain of Indian attack contains all of Ford's incomparable storytelling trademarks--particularly swift action and social introspection--underscored by the painterly landscape of Monument Valley. And what an ensemble of actors: Thomas Mitchell (who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar as the drunken doctor), Claire Trevor, Donald Meek, Andy Devine, and the magical John Carradine. Due to the film's striking use of chiaroscuro lighting and low ceilings, Orson Welles watched Stagecoach over and over while preparing for Citizen Kane. --Bill Desowitz6304696566The SearchersB000O599NAFort ApacheB000O599NKShe Wore a Yellow Ribbon6304696612Red RiverB0016MLIKMHigh Noon (Two-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition)163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899518John Wayne899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722753011General AAS163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video290935Adventure163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video291008General163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291054Classics163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video898788John Ford898780Western Directors163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video898824John Wayne898804Western Stars163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video411694Bancroft, George411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416702Carradine, John416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419468Curtis, Jack416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420576Devine, Andy419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428374Holt, Tim426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429804Jenks, Si429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436854Meek, Donald434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437628Mitchell, Thomas434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video441782Platt, Louise440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450052Trevor, Claire448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450366Tyler, Tom448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453258Worden, Hank451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456802Ford, John456580( F )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video300187Father's Day300182Holidays & Seasonal251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video345718011All Titles451830John Wayne Store251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3457200111930s451830John Wayne Store251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video722835011General AAS451830John Wayne Store251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600330All Titles515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600312Action & Adventure515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600318Drama515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600328Westerns515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3151151$5.99 & Under1061354The Big DVD Sale251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video672577011Amazon.com Movies & TV: Special Feature 616285171Featured Stores49598011Special Features130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video562085011Up to 1939562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR33LH21WZ3VNFVFavorite WesternsR2IO2A4WKRG45DBest Supporting Actor Oscar Winners!
B0000DJZ8R30A39CX0EE4BZCZCA39CX0EE4BZCZCCraig ConnellLockport, NY USA12009-05-25Thumbs Both Up & DownThe Grapes Of Wrath is an interesting, beautifully-filmed, powerful movie, but a story so marred by obvious leftist bias that it takes away from the presentation.

With the fabulous black-and-white contrasts here, I wish John Ford had directed a bunch of film noirs because this sure has the feel of one. This is just great photography and camera angles. Henry Fonda is the lead character and does a fine job as usual but Jane Darwell steals the show as the matriarch of the family. John Carradine almost does the same with his ex-preacher role. The scenes of the family all piled on this old jalopy is one that will stay with you.

It's no wonder it's still such a favorite with the liberal/secular population. We get the typical Hollywood fallen preacher role in which the man has lost his faith and then admits he doesn't have a clue. Later, he gives some of his theology which no Oklahoma preacher would ever believe in. For example, he has no idea what grace is.

Then we have another modern-day Hollywood staple: everyone in authority is portrayed as a ruthless, sadistic thug, from the cops to the leaders of the camps. The only one who is shown to be compassionate is the kindly gentleman who espouses all the virtues of socialism and communism, which Fonda then praises to the hilt the rest of the movie, along with an incredibly stupid monologue on New Age religion.
B0000DJZ8R50A2HW33PQSRHLNOA2HW33PQSRHLNOJ from NYNew York02009-04-14"I'll be there every time a cop is beatin' a guy up..."Directed by John Ford and adapted from the famous novel by John Steinbeck, "The Grapes of Wrath" is a gloomy masterpiece that challenges many of the assumptions we have about capitalism. Indeed, had Franklin Delano Roosevelt not come to power, social revolution would have been a very real possibility during the 1920's.

The reason this film is not as celebrated as, say, "Citizen Kane" or other of the AFI films is because it exposes poverty in America for what it is: as bad as anywhere else. We see the Joad family, a family that could be ours' very easily with a few alterations in time and space, suffering unimaginably.

Tom Joad, played flawlessly by Henry Fonda in a sort of Zen simplicity of growing realization, is the youngest man in the Joad clan. Having served 4 years for murder (justified homicide), he returns to the home in California which no longer exists. The suffering of his parents and two younger siblings is so grievous that he no longer thinks about drinking, dancing so much--his mind is on something much bigger. The powers that be.

Every frame of this film is smothered with misery, heat, and oppression. Perhaps now more than ever we should understand Joad's character and remember his words at the end of the movie to his saintly mother: "I'll be all around in the dark - I'll be everywhere. Wherever you can look - wherever there's a fight, so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there. I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad. I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready, and when the people are eatin' the stuff they raise and livin' in the houses they build - I'll be there, too."

Watching the Joad family suffer through one miserable experience after another and especially to end on with such a tone of hopelessness was not a good film experience.

I just see no redeeming quality in this film.If our country was so hopeless as portrayed in this film, then I would not have enjoyed the childhood that I did, being born in 1950!

I gave it two stars only for the stark portrayal of the inhumanity of corporate farms/corporate greed, and how migrant workers are treated to this day!

A film full of misery and injustice, for lovers of 'downers' only.DescriptionThis remarkable film version of Steinbeck?s novel was nominated for seven Academy Awards®, including for Best Picture, Actor (Henry Fonda), Film Editing, Sound and Writing. John Ford won the Best Director Oscar® and actress Jane Darwell won Best Actress for her portrayal of Ma Joad, the matriarch of the struggling migrant farmer family. Following a prison term he served for manslaughter, Tom Joad returns to find his family homestead overwhelmed by weather and the greed of the banking industry. With little work potential on the horizon of the Oklahoma dust bowls, the entire family packs up and heads for the promised land ? California. But the arduous trip and harsh living conditions they encounter offer little hope, and family unity proves as daunting a challenge as any other they face.Amazon.com essential videoRanking No. 21 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films, this 1940 classic is a bit dated in its noble sentimentality, but it remains a luminous example of Hollywood classicism from the peerless director of mythic Americana, John Ford. Adapted by Nunnally Johnson from John Steinbeck's classic novel, the film tells a simple story about Oklahoma farmers leaving the depression-era dustbowl for the promised land of California, but it's the story's emotional resonance and theme of human perseverance that makes the movie so richly and timelessly rewarding. It's all about the humble Joad family's cross-country trek to escape the economic devastation of their ruined farmland, beginning when Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns from a four-year prison term to discover that his family home is empty. He's reunited with his family just as they're setting out for the westbound journey, and thus begins an odyssey of saddening losses and strengthening hopes. As Ma Joad, Oscar-winner Jane Darwell is the embodiment of one of America's greatest social tragedies and the "Okie" spirit of pressing forward against all odds (as she says, "because we're the people"). A documentary-styled production for which Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland demanded painstaking authenticity, The Grapes of Wrath is much more than a classy, old-fashioned history lesson. With dialogue and scenes that rank among the most moving and memorable ever filmed, it's a classic among classics--simply put, one of the finest films ever made. --Jeff Shannon0783225857To Kill a Mockingbird (Collector's Edition)B00007KQA4Of Mice & MenB0010YSD7W12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition)B00003CX9ECitizen Kane (Two-Disc Special Edition)B0000AUHQTThe Great Gatsby163350General163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740136Down on Their Luck291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740128Rural Life291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740158Social Injustice291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722752011General AAS740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video413630Bond, Ward411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video414650Brown, Charles D411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416702Carradine, John416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419904Darwell, Jane419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video423408Fonda, Henry422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425716Grapewin, Charley424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427900Hickman, Darryl426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437590Mitchell, Grant434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442474Qualen, John442450( Q )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442520Quillan, Eddie442450( Q )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video446778Simpson, Russell444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448538Sully, Frank444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450362Tyler, Harry448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456802Ford, John456580( F )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908716All Fox Titles90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579524( G )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 - 1949562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video1253964011Best Director1253959011Academy Awards1253957011Award Winners386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1Q4NLLG3WS5K4History on Film: The Prewar Years and the Great Depression (1900-1939)R20DDVJ0XQFNJHTop Movies of 1940R323BJS390MZLSJohn Steinbeck novels on filmsRBDAYWXI2TPU40 Memorable MoviesR1HQSDBJ5OJMTZIf I Were the Academy for the Previous 40 Years (Part I: 1937-1956)RZIMUUD81PDMIMy all-time favorite movies, Part 1RRGNXEC3AQBO5Best Director Oscar Winners! They are running away from the powers that be in a space ship attempting to find the world of water. They are living in times of synthetic refreshment and super expensive, rare water. This movie takes you through worlds of different people and creature on a trip through a time warp to find the planet of water which will free the people from a tyrannical ruler. Very low-budget, the film nonetheless transcends cardboard sets and shoddy costuming to provide good entertainment of the 80's B-movie variety. There's lots of none-too-subtle 80's jokes about herpes and a nasty factory for making lobotomized eunuchs.

In the future, as the galaxy's water supply starts to run out, a band of pirates searches for a new water source.Amazon.comThe amiable sci-fi spoof The Ice Pirates has earned a small but vocal cadre of admirers thanks to its go-for-broke gags and a healthy disrespect for outer space epics like the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. An atypically goofy Robert Urich stars as the leader of a band of space pirates who kidnap a princess (Mary Crosby of Dallas fame), and then join her quest to find a mythical planet that can solve the universe’s water shortage. A completely game (shameless?) cast (which includes Anjelica Huston in fetching leather gear, Ron Perlman, John Matuszak, and fantastic film icon John Carradine) and Stewart (The Philadelphia Experiment) and Raffill’s breezy direction help sell the funniest bits (most notably, the notorious "space herpy" scene, and the frantic time-warp finale) and make the more leaden jokes palatable. --Paul GaitaB000056WR3KrullB0000844JJTime Bandits (Special Edition)B00000IQW3The Last StarfighterB00005JKEXThe Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth DimensionB0000AUHOMDragonslayer163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290941Comic Action163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290978Swashbucklers163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722746011General AAS163378Parody & Spoof163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video292651Comedy510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video409728Abercrombie, Ian409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416702Carradine, John416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419206Crosby, Mary416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429026Huston, Anjelica426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435872Matuszak, John434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video441236Perlman, Ron440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443840Roberts, Michael D442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450486Urich, Robert450392( U )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453258Worden, Hank451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video461106Raffill, Stewart461084( R )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600330All Titles515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600312Action & Adventure515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600314Comedy515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579528( I )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video12917411Today's Deals on DVD & Blu-ray44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video388863011DVD Deals388861011Features & Promotions (special_merchandising_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405386011PG405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620900111980 - I was in "The Duke's" final days with him and it just made it that more special. I bought it for someone special, who could not believe that I would be ever able to find it again since it had been so long. It made him smile, yes cry, and even laughed a few times. The price was right, the search was easy, and it is a movie that will be treasured forever. B00005JSGL53A1MJMYLRTZ76ZXA1MJMYLRTZ76ZXmagellanSanta Clara, CA42008-09-25Great swan songBased on the novel by Glendon Swarthout, this movie tells the tale of a famous gunslinger who is heading for his last shootout. The movie follows the book pretty accurately except for a few changes: in the novel, the character of Gillum, the son of the widow played by Lauren Bacall, is a little different from how he was portrayed in the movie, and also the sheriff, played by Henry Morgan, has a much greater role. Swarthout also goes into much more detail about the pain J.B. Books experienced as the cancer progressed, which was glossed over in the move, perhaps for expedience sake or perhaps that wouldn't have played as well on the silver screen.

For both movie lovers and John Wayne fans this movie is truly an elegiac swan song. Wayne plays the infamous, tough, smart old gunslinger of John Bernard Books, who has killed 30 men in gunfights, with the most nuanced performance in his long career. But now he is one of the last icons of a dying age, who, diagnosed with a terminal cancer, realizes that the way of life he famously symbolizes is dying just as quickly.

Ironically, Wayne the actor was himself at the end of his career, The Shootist being his own cinematic swan song. In a Pascalian moment of art imitating life, he himself was dying of cancer.

The movie is rich with this end-of-an-age, fin-de-siecle atmosphere and symbolism: most of the town sees Wayne as a perhaps heroic but nevertheless dangerous and lawless relic of a by-gone age. Others simply want to cash in on his fame by telling a romanticized version of his life story. Just before the final shootout, Wayne rides the new streetcar to the saloon, having sold his horse, with a pretty girl. They engage in small talk, as if this is just another ordinary day. But the contrast between the two couldn't be more stark; she is just starting her life, and Wayne is about to end his in a final blaze of glory.

But although Wayne has a few admirers, most of the townspeople seem to feel the world will be a safer, although admittedly less interesting, place without men like him. And the town marshall, played by Henry Morgan of Dragnet and Mash fame, is openly gleeful at the prospect of Wayne's impending demise, which Morgan hopes will occur before some of the volatile circumstances surrounding Wayne have the opportunity to blow up in his face.

Wayne truly went out in style with this film. In contrast to his other more macho, action-oriented movies, this is a more thoughtful, reflective, introspective film that shows what Wayne could do when he was presented with psychologically more subtle, richer material. Except for the last climactic scene, when we are finally treated to a good, old fashioned shoot-'em-up, this movie is a far more cerebral and emotionally deeper film, and Wayne carries it off flawlessly with a performance that strikes a perfect balance, combining the toughness of the old gunslinger with the vulnerability of the dying cowboy whose way of life is dying with him.

For example, in the case of Gillum, the teenager who worships Books as a hero, Books briefly becomes Gillum's surrogate father when he realizes that he must teach the boy in the short time he has left that there is a lot more to being a man than being quick with a gun. When all the boarders in Lauren Bacall's boarding house hastily move out after three gunslingers unsuccessfully try to murder Wayne in his sleep, he sells his horse for $300 and gives the money to Bacall so she won't lose her house.

The movie sports numerous smaller roles and cameos by other famous Hollywood stars, and one of the pleasures of the movie is seeing so many other well-known actors and actresses from Lauren Bacall to John Carradine, Richard Boone, Scatman Crothers, a young Ron Howard, and others, who appear throughout the movie. It's as if they're all getting together for one final send-off, paying their respects to Wayne in his last screen appearance.

The Shootist may never be as famous as Wayne's other, more dramatic films, but it might be the best performance he ever gave in a long, distinguished career.

The IMDB website has some wonderful trivia about the film. Check it out if you're interested.Product DescriptionJohn Wayne, in his last film appearance, stars as famed gunfighter J.J. Brooks. After learning from Dr. Hostetler (James Stewart) that he's dying of stomach cancer and has no more than two months to live, he moves into a boarding house in Carson City run by Bond Rogers (Lauren Bacall) and her son, Gillom (Ron Howard), to die quietly. But when word gets around that the old gunslinger is in town, curiosity seekers come out of the woodwork to get a look, and the ridiculous local marshal (Henry Morgan) contemplates a showdown with the legend. Annoyed by the attention and realizing that if he waits long enough, he'll die in great pain, Brooks decides to seek out his enemies and go down with guns blazing. Yet he works to persuade the hero-worshiping Gillom to foreswear the life of violence he's led. Director Don Siegel fashions a poignant, gracious farewell to the great star, who, like his character, was dying of cancer as the film was being shot. A stellar cast, which includes Western stalwarts such as Richard Boone, Hugh O'Brian, John Carradine, and Johnny Crawford, adds much to the film's resonance. As much a meditation on the burden of celebrity as an elegy for the Old West, it's most revealing in its star's final renunciation of violence.Amazon.com essential videoThe last film of John Wayne could not have been more fitting, full of details that can't help but make one reflect upon his legacy in the movies and his life as a star. Wayne plays a career gunfighter in the autumn of his life, trying to hang up his pistols after he discovers he's dying of cancer. Boarding in the house of an attractive widow (Lauren Bacall) and her son (Ron Howard), Wayne's character opts for peace in his final days but is dogged by his reputation when a handful of killers seeks him out for a final fight. Howard is fine as a fatherless boy who needs the strong mentor the hero represents, and James Stewart--who costarred with Wayne in the great Man Who Shot Liberty Valance--plays the doctor who gives the big man the bad news. Don Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) thoughtfully directs a very special and sensitive production. --Tom KeoghB000O179FYTrue Grit (Special Collector's Edition)078322592XRooster Cogburn (...and the Lady)B000O599WQThe Cowboys (Deluxe Edition)B00005ASGHThe Sons of Katie ElderB001TWT0AEThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Paramount Centennial Collection)163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291008General163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291010Action & Adventure163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291062Outlaws163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video898822James Stewart898804Western Stars163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video898824John Wayne898804Western Stars163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411336Bacall, Lauren411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413700Boone, Richard411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416702Carradine, John416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419074Crawford, Johnny416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419228Crothers, Scatman416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428658Howard, Ron426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433282Lenz, Rick432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436590McKinney, Bill434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438108Morgan, Harry434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439470North, Sheree438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439644O'Brian, Hugh439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440486Palmer, Gregg440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448118Stewart, James444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video462164Siegel, Don403580( S )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video300187Father's Day300182Holidays & Seasonal251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video345718011All Titles451830John Wayne Store251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3457240111970s451830John Wayne Store251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video722835011General AAS451830John Wayne Store251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234081All Paramount3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234111Classics3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234131Drama3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579548( S )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video390990011DVD Feature16285171Featured Stores49598011Special Features130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405386011PG405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620890111970 - Everything about this production pops, from the stunning cinematography, to the incredible cast, the excellent score, and Ford's impeccable direction. Wayne looms very large in this pic, and from his first close-up, there is little doubt of his star quality.B000F0UUJ654A1J03J0HZ7KU5TA1J03J0HZ7KU5TScott RiversLos Angeles, CA USA42009-03-07The Western That Started It AllThroughout the 1930s, Westerns were considered "B-movie" fodder until John Ford's influential classic placed the genre back in the "A" category. Ford's first sound Western remains a textbook for international filmmakers and cineastes - its mythic power undiminished.B000F0UUJ650A25APA3H2DYALHA25APA3H2DYALHMasoud Mirmomeni02009-02-13Masoud MirmomeniIt is one of the greatest movies in Western genre. I highly recommend this to all customers for a future purchase. Very interesting to see The Duke really be enjoying himself in early movies.DescriptionNine disparate travelers are thrust together on a Stagecoach destined for Apache territory...and movie immortality. As the Ringo Kid, director John Ford casr a lanky veteran of 70 B-movies, serials and shorts named John Wayne. Each rifle shot and closeup rang out the news: a new star is born. Claire Trevor, Thomas Mitchell (his Academy Award?-winning* performance) and others made memorable imptressions. Stunt legend Yakima Canutt provided hair-raising thrilles. And 17 American folk songs formed the basis of an Oscar?-winning* score. This adventure ushered in a 30-year era of great Westerns, many featuring its top practitioners ? Ford and Wayne.
DVD Features:
Audio Commentary:Commentary by Scott Eyman
Documentary:AMERICAN MASTERS: John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and the Legend
Featurette:Stagecoach: A Story of Redemption
TV Spot:May 4, 1946 Academy Award Theater Broadcast
Theatrical Trailer

Amazon.com essential videoThis landmark 1939 Western began the legendary relationship between John Ford and John Wayne, and became the standard for all subsequent Westerns. --Bill His career spanned the end of the silent era to the Vietnam era, and though he is most famous for his Irish films - namely "The Quiet Man" and his John Wayne westerns, this five movie set is an interesting mix of his non-Wayne movies. The development and perfection of his craft can be seen through this range of five films. The people who put this collection together, however, were faced with an impossible task - show the scope, power and breadth of John Ford's career WITHOUT including any John Wayne movies! The actor and director were so inseperable, that the decision to exclude any Wayne film meant that the very best of Ford's movies are missing. And one wonders, seeing most of John Ford's stable of actors wandering through these five movies, except Wayne, if some of these films might not have been better with John Wayne in a starring role.

"The Lost Patrol" is a decent World War I film, that displays the burgeoning talent of the younger John Ford, who had not yet cut his ties to the silent film era. This movie is overdramatized like a silent film, and would only need to have the dialog replaced with cue cards to be a run-of-the-mill silent movie. Yet the promise of Ford's directorship starts to leak through. This movie stars Victor McLaglen, who has trouble deciding if he is acting with a British Accent, an Irish Accent or an American accent and a young, tall Boris Karloff (!). The most interesting thing about this movie is we see the beginning of not only John Ford's family stable of actors in this film, we also see names like Quincannon and Corporal Bell that will appear again and again in Ford's later western films.

"Mary of Scotland" is the only painful movie of the batch. It is a sad costume drama with Katherine Hepburn trying to play the title role. This movie comes off as a stage play performed before the camera. The movie is about as difficult to watch as a mediocre opera, with people in immaculate costumes, posturing their way through dialog, only without singing. I suspect that this was either one of the movies Ford was forced to make for a studio in order to get the funding for a project he would have preferred to do, or else it was one of those director's pet projects that would better have been shelved. In a "garage" full of Ford classics, this movie is an "Edsel".

"The Informer" was a very low budget film, and, like the later "Rio Grande", John Ford turns the lack of money for sets and extras into strengths, getting the most out of his characters and script, and using the camera and lighting (or lack thereof) to enhance the story. Victor McLaglen plays a former IRA terrorist who turns in his own best friend for a reward in order to get the money to flee to America with his doxie girl friend, and is so consumed by guilt that he tries to lose himself in a night of debauchery, but cannot escape the consequences of his actions. The interesting thing about this film is that the IRA are not protrayed as heroic buffons (as in The Quiet Man) and the English occupiers are not portrayed as villians. This is John Ford at his best!

"Sergeant Rutledge" is the forgotten treasure of the collection. Jeffery Hunter stars as an army officer who defends an African American Buffalo Soldier accused of rape and murder. Woody Strode excels as Sgt. Rutledge, trapped in a situation where it appears there is no chance of his receiving justice because of the color of his skin. John Ford stacks the deck to make it appear that Rutledge is indeed guilty of the charges against him, and Jeffrey Hunter as a misguided crusader. Jeffery Hunter is most famous for making the most bone-headed Hollywood career move ever made. Offered the role of Captain Pike in the TV Series "Star Trek", he turned the role down in preference of his movie career. He lived only four years after making this decision, and thus lost his one chance at film and TV immortality.

"Cheyenne Autumn" is the only one of these films to receive continued critical acclaim and air time. It is noteable as John Ford's final western. Ford returned to Monument Valley for the final time in order to make this movie, and it is interesting to watch as he tries to use different vistas of the region to pass for Nebraska and the Dakotas and every place inbetween, none of which the land resembles. The cinematography is beautiful. Ford also called upon the natives of the Monument Valley to protray the Cheyenne - but only in bit parts. As if to reinforce his patriarchal attititude towards the Native Americans, he puts white actors like Delores Del Rio, Sal Mineo, and Ricardo Montalbahn in the indian speaking roles. Surely by the time Ford made this movie there were enough Native American actors in the business to have filled these roles. Although the story contains powerful material, Ford is unable to pull it off with anything like the power of "The Searchers". The movie wanders, with a completely ridiculous and unnessesary comic relief section in the middle where Jimmy Stewart plays Wyatt Earp as a buffoon, fool and dandy. This overlong section completely destroys the pacing and tension built up over the course of the pursuit. It is almost like Ford suddenly realized that the humor in his earlier westerns was missing and so he decided to throw some in. "The Searchers" ended with John Wayne standing in a doorway, determined face set, looking in on an unseen domestic future he has no part in. It is a powerful scene that speaks volumes, possibly the best ending in any Ford movie ever. In "Cheyenne Autumn" the aging and ailing Ford was unable to pull such a grand and subtle performance from his actors, and relies instead on a cliche ending with Ricardo riding away into a sunset. "Cheyenne Autumn" is a very good Ford western, it is just not a great Ford western. One wonders why John Ford did not cast John Wayne in this movie. There were three or four roles Wayne could have played, and he might have given Ford the focus necessary to pull the movie off better. Perhaps Ford believed the public would not have accepted a John Wayne sympathetic to indians but given the strength of Wayne's performance in some of his final films, there is no doubt he could have pulled it off. It may be that since Wayne had his own career directing and producting films, Ford did not want to have another "director" - especially one he had brought along from nothing - hanging over his shoulder.

Thus this Wayne-less collection spans most of Ford's career, and is thus a good representation of his body of work (if one wanted to do so by ignore all the John Wayne movies) though I do wonder if some better choices might have been made for some of the pictures. "The Iron Horse" might have been a better choice for his early career than "The Lost Patrol". And certainly Ford made some oddities that could have been a better pick than "Mary of Scotland", after all, he directed such unusual actors as Will Rogers and a young Shirley Temple. I would like to see a second collection of non-Wayne Ford movies, that might include "The Iron Horse" as well as some classics like "My Darling Clementine", "The Long Grey Line", "Two Rode Together" and "The Plow and the Stars".B000F0UUHS45A1OTTD802GXIB8A1OTTD802GXIB8James J. CreminLos Angeles, CA USA62007-03-20Five from Mr. Fenny aka John FordI agree with one reviewer that "The Hurricane" should have been included. Also, "Three Bad Man" and "The Iron Horse" need to be accessed but they very likely still belong to Fox. My take on the films here:

"The Lost Patrol" Victor McLaglen and Boris Karloff made an odd team indeed. McLaglen has led this patrol to somewhere in North Africa and he has to thankless job to hold his men together to maintain his own sense of sanity. Karloff already lost his and there's really not much anyone can do until the rest of the troops find them. Almost ten years later, Bogart would star with an all male cast in "Sahara", but the outcome would be different. Kurasawa may have been influeneced with the simple graves at the end as he used graves to an even more haunting ending in the "Seven Samurai".

"The Informer" As mentioned in the extras, Ford was very influenced with German Impressionism and loved "Sunrise" that starred George O'Brien, Ford's early star in the above mentioned silent westerns. So, it could be said that this Irish tale is actually a film noir, years before its name was ever invoked. Very sad to watch as the viewer clearly sees that poor Gypo doesn't know what he's doing. This is clearing the best film of this lot and stands as one of the best films Ford has ever done. Very catholic, too, as the poor lad dies forgiven. Kudos to the rest of the cast as well.

"Mary of Scotland" There is actually to lot to like about this movie. After all, this stars Katherine Hepburn who gives great a regal performance not too different from all the other roles she's done. This also costars Fredrick March, who appeared in many high brow movies in this time period. The language is rich but is guilty of being too wordy. It's interesting to compare this to other costume drams that starred actresses of this time period, such as Marlene Dietrich "The Scarlett Empress", (my favorite), Greta Garbo "Queen Christina" (a masterpiece, but it bombed at the time), Norma Shearer "Marie Antoninette" and Bette Davis who got away with several, including two in which she played Elizabeth I.

"Sergeant Rutledge" This is intentionally an umcomfortable film to watch and the same theme was much more sucessful in "To Kill A Mockingbird", made just a year later. It must be said that Woody Strode was a very stiff actor. He was such a demanding presense that he usually was given little or no lines in the movies he appeared. Here, he's the title character, a black man accursed of raping and strangling a white woman. After different viewpoints are shown in flashback, he's called upon to give a speech in which he does say the n word. I actually don't have much problem with Jeffrey Hunter. The guy did what he's supposed to do, but Montgomery Cliff he wasn't. He suffered the same kind of blandness John Agar had. It was the Perry Mason type ending, which was a hit show back then, that I have a problem with. The guilty party confesses only because his conscious bothers him. It's simply not believable.

"Cheyenne Authumn" I actually like this film. True, Gilbert Roland, Ricardo Montaban, Sal Mineo and Dolores del Rio weren't actually native Americans but they wouldn't weren't bad at playing them. Ricard Widmark is between a rock and a hard place when he reluntuntly leads the natives. There's also the Quaker love interest played by Carole Baker. There's tension in every meeting they have. I must commend Ford for having the "got to kill me an Indian" scene. Natives ride up to whites begging for food and one gets murdered and scalped in the process. This is quickly followed with Ford satirizng himself. The killer gets accidently shot, then relunctantly treated by a poker playing Wyatt Earp, played by James Stewart. Then we get the Indians trapped by Karl Marden, who claims he knows all about Indians due to all the books he got about them, most in German. Widmark sneaks off to get Edward G. Robinson and they both get to save the Indians from slaughter for the time being. This is a sad movie to watch but there is much to appreciate here. It was a brave film to make in 1964.

1.THE LOST PATROL-TENSE ANTI-WAR CLASSIC!*****
A British army Patrol, during the time of WW1, in the Mesopotamian desert gets lost, after their commander is killed, and he has left no notes or orders,in regard to their mission or exact location. With
their leader dead the small group's command falls to Sergeant Victor McLaglen. After a journey of unknown length, the patrol finds an oasis, and it is here where most of the action takes place as they are pinned down by (mostly unseen) Arab fighters. It is here where we really get to meet the men and get to know their hopes and fears. The other men include J.M.Kerrigan(as Quincannn-probably the most frequently used name in a Ford film!),Reginald Denny (Brown),Wallace Ford( excellent as Moretti),Boris Karloff,(,outstanding as Sanders-a religious fanatic),and Douglas Walton,as callow youth, who when he leaves for the service he relates that that was the ONLY time he saw his mother cry. This is (to me) one of the dramtic highlight so the film, when we see 19 year old Walton(about 25,in real life) pours his heart out to McLaglen. This scene, even more so than others shows the futility of war. Great direction,a great screenplay(Dudley Nichols,Ford's favorote writer,at the time-THE INFORMER-STAGECOACH),a fine Max Steiner score, and an excellent DVD transfer. A GREAT ANTI-WAR AND(mildly) ANTI-IMPERIALIST FILM,AND A MUST SEE!
MARY OF SCOTLAND:KATHERINE HEPBURN-FREDRIC MARCH **1/2
Katherine Hepburn,in her only Ford film,is Mary, Queens of Scots. This motion picture is derived from a Maxwell Anderson Play, and a screenplay by Dudley Nichols. To me of what I've seen of Ford's thirties films,"Mary of Scotland" it is Ford's least-good films of the period.Watchable, but forgettable. Two and one half stars.
THE INFORMER:VICTOR MCLAGLEN'S FINEST HOUR *****
The story of "the troubles",in Ireland, in told in a very somber way in the John Ford classic "The Informer",with Victor McLaglen(a Ford regular)giving an AA winning performance in the title role.McLaglen plays Gypo Nolan,a down and out Dubliner, who is without money, and because of this and having been recently "dismissed" from the IRA(Irish Republican Army'freedom fighters, hoping to obtain a united and totally free Ireland, with no British ties whatsoever) and because he is also in jeopardy of losing his girlfried Margot Grahame,(outstanding)as he is in a greatly strained emotional state, and when wondering the streets comes upon a reward poster for "IRA murderer"Frankie McPhillip(Wallace Ford-no relation to the director). The reward is worth enough so that both Gypo and his girl can get passage to America.A short while latter Gypo accidentally runs into Frankie,an old friend, and they have a short conversion about Frankie being on the run,how Frankes's mother is,and the reasons why Gypo was "sacked" from the(in this coversion a "Quincannon" is mentioned) IRA,after the conversion ends the wheels start to turn in Gypo's head and he wonders over to the "Black and Tans"station(the Black and Tans,so-called becuse of their uniforms, are special British militiary(police)men assigned to Ireland when "the troubles" are at their height,""Up the Irish" or in this film,"Up the Rebels" types may look at the B&T's as THE REAL TERRORISTS,but that's for another discussion)and reluctanly tells the "Brits" that Frankie will be at his mother's.After Frankie is killed in a shoot-out,Gypo is given disdainfully(even the B&T's don"t like Informers) his money and goes.Drinking, fighting, and partying are on the night's program for Gypo, but his drining is only a mask,to hide his emotional breakdown from his wicked deed. The IRA figures out what went on,in regard to Frankie's death, and Gypo is a doomed man!
Other supporting members of the cast are very good to excellent,J.M.Kerrigan,Preston Foster,Donald Meek,Joseph (then Sauers)Sawyer, and Una'Connor as Frankie's mother who is a bite "over the top" early in the film, but comes through poignanly at the coclusion. From a LiamO'Flaherty story,an excellent Dudley Nichols screenplay, with a haunting Max Steiner musical score, and a very crisp and clear DVD transfer. The ONLY MINUS NO DVD COMMETARY-A MUST SEE!!

CHEYENNE AUTUMN-DESPITE FLAWS ALMOST A CLASSIC ****
Ignoring "Fort Apache",and the anti-racism of "The Searchers",many critics (falsely) claim that John Ford set an anti-Native American(Indian) tone in films that increased racism in America.Well, whatever truth there is to either side of the argument is,in this film John Ford,in his last Western,is FIRMLY on the Indians side. But is was still (somewhat justified)critised fom casting,in VERY IMPORTANT roles none-Idians,especially The Victor Jory,Gilbert Roland,Richardo Montalban,Dolores Del Reo,and Sal Mineo(!)roles.
This motion picture tells the true story of the Cheyenne's plight at the hand of "THE GREAT FATHER" and their trek, and persuit(by U.S.troops) back to their Yellowstone homeland.
On the minus side is the appearrance of Carroll Baker(miscast) as a Quaker school marm) and Karl Malden, with an"over the top performance" as a muderous, racist American(German born) General. The screenplay by James Webb(Pork Chop Hill,The Big Country,Cape Fear) is lacklustre, and the comic interlude of Jimmy Stewart(as Wyatt Earp) with Arthur KennedyI"Doc" Holliday) and John Carradine(a dishonest gambler) and a bunch of hooligian ,led by Ken Curtis is out of place, and NOT VERY FUNNYI did lke Elizebeth Allen, was a damsel of ill-repute.This is a heart-felt film by John Ford with good performances by Richard Widmark as a "liberal" U.S. "horse soldier",and LaBaker's love interest, and in a cameo Edward G.Robinson.The musical score by Alex North is OK,but I would have preferred Elmer Bernstein. An An excellent DVD transfer.Despite my misgivings,4 stars.

SERGEANT RUTLEDGE-ANTI RACIST CLASSIC WESTERN *****

In this unheralded John Ford anti-racist Western, set in 1881,Sergeant Braxton Rutledge(Woody Stode) is accussed of rape and murder, and mostly in flashbacks the events of his accusation, his fleeing, and trial are told. The pace is perfect and acting and direction excellent. In his third Ford film Jeffery Hunter proves again that he was a very underrated actor. His performance is excellent, also good are Constance Towers,as Hunter's love interest and Braxton sympathizer,Willis Bouchey(a Ford grouchy regular),Juano Hernandez,Routledge's fellow "Buffalo Soldier",and sort of "father figure".for the rest of the black soldier's,and Charleton Young(another Ford regular) as the intentially racist prosecutor. But it is Strode(a Ford regular,in support roles) who carries the film. His pride and dignity are evident, in every scene in which he appears. There re two ways to look at this film,or more properly to look at Hollywood, either this film was way ahead of its time or Hollywood took to long to look at U.S. race relations,in any meaning manner. The anti-racists films,of Hollywood, did not really start to make an appearance until the late 1940's,with films such as "PINKY" and the 1950 film debut of Sidney Poitier in "NO WAY OUT"(see my review)My opinion is "so-called liberal Hollywood"(remember the blacklist) was and is always interested IN PROFITS,and NOT PREACHING!.
A GREAT FILM by "AMERICA'S GREATEST DIRECTOR!!
DescriptionWHV celebrates on of the true masters of American cinema with the release of The John Ford Collection. Four-time Academy Award?-Winning director John Ford is perhaps best known for his Westerns and collaborations with John Wayne, however, this Ford collection runs the gamut of genres and shows the diversity and genius of John Ford at his most impressive. Featured here will be the DVD debuts of five classic titles - all will be exclusive to the five-disc boxed set.Amazon.comJohn Ford remains the consensus choice as America's greatest director, and his critical eminence dates from two films in this set. By 1934 he had been directing for 17 years, building a solid reputation as a Hollywood professional with maybe the best eye in the movie business. With The Lost Patrol (1934) and The Informer (1935)--made for RKO rather than his accustomed studio base, Fox--he took a decisive step toward establishing himself as a personal, at least semi-independent artist. Both films were stark dramas free of box-office compromise, glib heroics, or any expectation of facile happy endings. They were also more relentlessly stylized than anything Ford had done before ... which both distinguished them in their day and left them vulnerable to dating when some of their experimentation proved rather dead-ended.
The Lost Patrol began Ford's association with producer Merian C. Cooper, a partnership that would lead to the independent production company Argosy and the making of such fine, ultrapersonal films as The Quiet Man, The Searchers, and Ford's celebrated cavalry trilogy. The story, by Philip MacDonald, concerns a handful of British soldiers cornered at an oasis in the Mesopotamian Desert (now Iraq) during World War I and slowly decimated by an unseen enemy. The strong visuals--baking sun, the undulating vastness of the dunes, the drift of ghostly mirages--befit a crucible of character-testing, with an unnamed Sergeant (Victor McLaglen) striving to keep at least one man alive as desperation, madness, and implacable Arab snipers take their toll. This DVD release restores six minutes of footage cut for a 1949 rerelease and rarely seen since.
Ford won the first of his four best-director Oscars for The Informer, an intense tale of "one night in strife-torn Dublin, 1922" when a slow-witted I.R.A. strongman named Gypo Nolan sells out his best friend for 20 British pounds. On a budget that obliged him to obscure canvas sets with deep shadows and a persistent fog that underscores Gypo's mental and spiritual confusion, Ford created a visual world akin to the German Expressionist classics of the 1920s. But the film's inventive use of sound and an ambitious music score (by Max Steiner) commingling leitmotifs for half a dozen key characters also encouraged '30s critics to hail it as the first classic of the sound era. That was overstating it (and more than a little amnesiac on the critics' part!). Overstated, too, was Ford's relentless Christ symbolism paralleling Gypo's betrayal to that of Judas. Still, Victor McLaglen's portrayal of the title character remains a triumph (McLaglen won an Oscar as well), and the film abounds in brilliant strokes: the silhouette of a British soldier shining his flashlight on the wanted poster of Gypo's friend, while Gypo lurks just outside the beam; the giant Nolan forever knocking his head on hanging signs or seeming to be crushed by low ceilings; the cacophony of cries and gunfire, and then crashing silence, as the Black and Tan raid the I.R.A. rebel's home. Initially overrated, then relegated to museum status, The Informer awaits rediscovery as a dynamic motion picture.
The John Ford Collection includes one more mid-'30s RKO endeavor, Mary of Scotland (1936). Although handsome, this adaptation of a Maxwell Anderson blank-verse play about Queen Elizabeth's northern rival never finds credible footing as a movie. Andrew Sarris is dead right in lamenting Ford's version of Mary, Queen of Scots, as "a madonna of the Scottish moors"--Katharine Hepburn, inevitably. The most interesting thing about the production is the offscreen story, that Ford and Hepburn fell passionately in love, yet (perhaps) resisted becoming lovers.
From there we leap to the 1960s and two Westerns made under the aegis of Warner Bros. (Warner now owns the RKO library, hence this rather arbitrary set.) Sergeant Rutledge (1960) has markedly improved with age, with what once seemed creaky dramaturgy now playing as bold stylization. Using a jagged flashback structure occasioned by a court-martial at a Southwest outpost, Ford took an unflinching look at the legacy of race in America. The then-unknown black actor Woody Strode has a showcase role as a magnificent "Buffalo soldier" accused of the rape-murder of his commanding officer's blond, white daughter and the murder of the commandant himself. Unfortunately, Ford's once-masterly handling of character actors had grown lax, and he indulged some tedious bombast from Willis Bouchey and Carleton Young as the presiding judge and prosecutor, respectively; and Jeffrey Hunter, however effective in The Searchers, made a weak protagonist as Rutledge's defense counsel. But the veteran cameraman Bert Glennon almost winds things back to Stagecoach days, occasionally turning the film's Technicolor to very nearly black and white.
Another debt to race relations is addressed in Cheyenne Autumn (1964), a beautiful title to grace John Ford's final Western. The film has moments of grandeur as Ford attempts at long last to "tell the story from the Indians' point of view," and it's a pleasure to report that William H. Clothier's majestic Technicolor compositions have been restored to their Panavision dimensions on the DVD. Ford is unambiguously supportive of the Cheyennes' resolve to bolt their reservation in the desert Southwest and trek north to their ancestral lands. By contrast, most of white society, the military, the bureaucracy, and the sensationalist press are portrayed as insensitive, foolish, or hateful. However, the Cheyenne are nobly wooden, with all key roles played by non-Indians: Ricardo Montalban, Gilbert Roland, Sal Mineo, Victor Jory, and Dolores Del Rio (breathtakingly beautiful as ever). As for point of view, it's sympathetic cavalry officer Richard Widmark and Quaker missionary Carroll Baker through whose eyes most of the epic narrative unfolds. --Richard T. Boling02009-05-15Captains Courageous VCR is a good buy. This story was written in the late 1800's and filmed in the 1930s. It is a classic story by an excellent and famous writer and the film is well acted and directed. The Scenes and technical production is very impressive especially for the time it was done. I recommend it to you no matter what your age and I wish it could be seen by all school children.

This movie turned out to be one of our favorites of all time. A beautifully written and acted film. DescriptionThe fishing schooner We're Here has just pulled up a different kind of fish: rich, 10-year-old Harvey Cheyne, who tumbled off the side of a sleek ocean liner. Harvey will have to wait months before the We're Here returns to harbor, months that will transform him from a spoiled whiner into an honorable young man - all because of the life lessons he learns from Manuel, the humble fisherman who befriends him. From Rudyard Kipling's classic, Captains Courageous thrills with its seagoing action, grand scale and all-star cast. But what gives it full-masted magnificence is the chemistry between Freddie Bartholomew (Harvey) and Spencer Tracy (Manuel). Tracy won his first Best Actor Academy Award?* for his towering portrait of the father we all wish for: virile, patient, wise and protective. Set sail for cinema glory.Amazon.com essential videoThe award-winning 1937 version of Kipling's classic Captains Courageous finds spoiled-rotten brat Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) well on the way to becoming a horrible adult, under the illusion that money can buy all happiness. The little monster falls off a cruise ship, and is fished out of the drink by Portuguese fisherman Manuel (Spencer Tracy) and brought back to his fishing boat. Though the overprivileged lad initially chafes at being put to work aboard the smelly vessel, he eventually learns the value of a day's work and learns lessons in life that make him a functional person and bring him several steps closer to manhood. Despite Tracy's indeterminate accent, he excels in his role as the boy's friend, and enthusiastic performances from the rest of the cast bring this coming-of-age tale to life. It's a film that has lost none of its sentimental appeal (or occasional hamminess) over the years and should have an all-ages appeal to fans of Hollywood classics. --Jerry RenshawB000B5XOYSBoys TownB00004YRIDThe Old Man and the SeaB00005AUKAMoby DickB000GRUQLATreasure IslandB000HWZ4CASergeant York (Two-Disc Special Edition)163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290940Classics163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video712532Feature Films712256Animation404276Genres130DVD139452Video712258General712256Animation404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163417General163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video290935Adventure163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video163416Animation163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video722769011General AAS507990Classics163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video300399Drama163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video595062Family Films163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video509094Beach Boys465350Artists163420Music Video & Concerts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722774011General AAS511462Classic Rock163420Music Video & Concerts404276Genres130DVD139452Video412050Barrymore, Lionel411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412066Bartholomew, Freddie411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416702Carradine, John416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video421144Douglas, Melvyn419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425716Grapewin, Charley424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431506Kingsford, Walter430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444230Rooney, Mickey442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444588Rue, Jack La442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video449952Tracy, Spencer448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456756Fleming, Victor456580( F )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600330All Titles515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600312Action & Adventure515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600318Drama515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video745702Kids & Family515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video562085011Up to 1939562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video1253965011Best Actor1253959011Academy Awards1253957011Award Winners386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR3H9LR1NLIWKX2Movies about friendship and coming of ageR180PZTRB250VQSpencer Tracy filmsRWLVTHDD2CLUX1937 Academy Award Winners & Nominees on DVD & VHSR2OVF5064YCFDKBest Actor Oscar Winners!
"THE LITTLE COLONEL" (released: 22 February 1935) (80 mins) (B&W/Color Versions) - Under David Butler (Director), Buddy G. DeSylva (Producer), William Conselman (Screenwriter), Annie Fellows Johnston (Book Author), Arthur C. Miller (Cinematographer), William Skall (Cinematographer), Art Lange (Musical Direction/Supervision), Thomas Moore (Composer (Music Score), Irene Morra (Editor) - - - - - - our story line opens with crusty old Colonel Lloyd (Lionel Barrymore) is used to having his ornery way so when he finds out his daughter Elizabeth (Evelyn Venable) who is determined to run off with Yankee Jack Shermon (John Lodge) to be married, he confronts her in a heated exchange and vows never to see her again if she does, and then she leaves --- years later Elizabeth, with her husband and their young daughter Miss Lloyd (Shirley Temple), decides to return to a small house that belonged to her mother and which happens to be next door to her stubborn father's home --- they soon have an accidental meeting, with a few clashes of granddaughter and the elderly Colonel just to see who is the most stubborn! --- Troubles descend on the Sherman family through some persuasive dishonest men who are out to rob them of their legal rights, and things start to get serious but grandpa comes to the rescue --- some highlights with Becky (Hattie McDaniel) and Walker (Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson) certainly add some amusing dialog and Robinson's tap dancing is superb --- Not surprisingly, little Shirley is right in there keeping pace with him as they both tap dance up the stairs --- There will never be a child star to match Shirley Temple: A born actress, dancer, and entertainer --- but if you need a feel good moment checkout a Shirley Temple film.

Darling (Art Director), Thomas K. Little (Set Designer), Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (Choreography) - - - - - - our story line has a precocious little tot (Shirley Temple) in the New York City of 1850, must decide between life with her penniless but charming rogue of a grandfather & a wealthy old lady who loves her --- Frank Morgan, who had honed his scene stealing techniques for decades before Shirley was born, plays her grandfather, he was the rare actor who could dominate the dialogue even at the mighty tyke's expense. He is constantly entertaining to watch and adds greatly to the enjoyment of the film --- Movie trivia collectors will recognize Stepin Fetchit, unbilled as Morgan's servant --- as usual in most Shirley Temple films, she performs`What Did The Bluebird Say,' `He Was A Dandy,' and, with The Hall Johnson Choir, `Get On Board, Little Children' --- Although he does not appear in the film, the legendary Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson choreographed Shirley's tap routines; his influence is readily apparent --- -Shirley Temple is quite glorious and the musical numbers are lively and fun.

This movie is one of John Ford's and Henry Fonda's best. Unfortunately I found the audio commentary to be inconsistent. It was at its' best when addressing movie history but lacking when both addressing the history of the times and when exploring the commentators' own views of history.

I will not address the movie itself because many of the commentators have already done so. I agree with those who think this is an amazing picture with John Ford, Henry Fonda, Claudette Colbert as well as the supporting cast at their best. I have seen this movie five times and will be watching it again.

This movie is based on a historical novel and takes place in the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary war. It is about Fonda and Colbert attempting to start a life for themselves while fighting with other patriots against Torys (loyalists) and Indians supporting the British.

When the commentary begins two commentators introduce themselves. Nick Redman announces he does not know much about this period of American History and asks Julie Kirgo to fill him in about America at the time. She does this throughout the movie.

One of the first things he asks is how far the characters would have traveled when they went from Albany to the Mohawk Valley. Ms. Kirgo states she is not sure and then guesses between 100 and 200 miles. Actually it is between 80 and 86 miles. Fonda and Colbert settle in Deerfield New York near the settlement of German Flatts in the Mohawk Valley.

Finding the distance from Albany, N.Y. to Deerfield or German Flatts in the Mohawk Valley is not hard. It took me 2 minutes to do a search on the internet and find it is approximately 86 miles to Deerfield and 80 miles to German Flatts. I don't know why this question was not discussed before hand or why taping could not be stopped for a couple of minutes to look up the information. If the two people discussing the movie don't have all the information about what they are talking about it makes wonder why I should keep listening

At times during the movie the commentators give their personal views of history and become political. At approximately one hour and 20 minutes into the movie one commentator explains that if you look at this movie you understand where the right to bear arms comes from. It seems that during the period of the movie people needed guns to defend themselves against all kinds of enemies and kill food but now people who talk about the right to bear arms today are forgetting you don't have to defend your homes like you did hundreds of years ago and use guns to kill food.

This comment has nothing to do with the movie. While is important for people to decide where they stand on the issue of gun control, their views do not belong in a commentary on this movie.

Similarly a comment is made about how the settlers unfairly encroached on Indian lands. While a strong case can and has been made about the treatment of American Indians by settlers it is not addressed in this movie and I believe does not belong in the commentary. You can't even argue that the Indians fighting for the British did so solely because their lands had been taken by the colonists because Indians fought for the colonists as well.

We are also told in the commentary that history is everyone reneging on their promises. Once again this issue is not addressed in this movie so I don't know why the commentators need to discuss it here.

My favorite discussion dealt with the Homestead Act which was signed into law in 1862, approximately 90 years after the time this movie took place. The commentators explained that settlers in this movie settled forested land and made it their own and then started talking about the Homestead Act. Once again they discuss an important part of history that was not a part of this movie.

In another case one of the commentators notes that the Torys' interests in fighting were mostly commercial. There is no discussion of the politics of the Revolutionary War in this movie and why Torys' remained loyal to England. Further I am not a historian but have read that some Torys' fought because of a loyalty to England which was viewed as their country. The movie 1776 makes some moving arguments as to why this nation should have remained a part of the British Empire.

The commentators even discuss their view of what it means to be patriotic. I am interested in what John Ford thought about patriotism not what the commentators think about patriotism.

I did learn some important things when the commentators stuck to the movie. I learned that about John Ford and his relationship with his brother who was in this movie. I learned the part Darryl Zanuck played in the making of the movie. I learned about the relationship between Claudettee Colbert and John Ford and Henry Fonda and John Ford.

I also learned about a battle scene Ford did not shoot and how the scene with Henry Fonda running to get help was changed from the original screenplay. I learned about the book that this movie was based on and I did some research about the historical areas in the Mohawk Valley which exist today.

This made me more frustrated. The commentators said some fascinating things about the movie. I learned some interesting stuff. If they had stuck to the movie and been prepared to discuss that alone this would have been a great commentary rather than having to listen to information that I do not think is relevant to this movie at all.
B0007PALM023AV37WGFZH7PIOAV37WGFZH7PIOVincent TesiVinnyBrick, New Jersey82008-05-21"Drums" Pound a Shallow BeatNot much of a fan of John Ford. After viewing Drums Along the Mohawk it didn't change my opinion. Still don't know why some film buffs hail Ford as the demigod of the western genre. Drums Along the Mohawk is filled with melodramatic dialog, sub par acting by Henry Fonda and Colbert, and poor camera work that didn't utilize the sprawling greenery and hilltops that beautify upstate New York. Colbert wears way too much eye makeup and doesn't look like a frontier woman living in the 1700's. Ford gratuitously places his friend Ward Bond in a supporting role, but it is Edna May Oliver who steals every frame that Ford allows her to be in. The sappy soundtrack is misplaced, more suited to the silent film era and not much historical realism is used to legitimize the struggle among settlers, British loyalists, and Native Indians during the 1700's. B0007PALM0420A1J03J0HZ7KU5TA1J03J0HZ7KU5TScott RiversLos Angeles, CA USA202008-03-28John Ford and the American RevolutionBased on Walter D. Edmonds' historical novel, "Drums Along the Mohawk" (1939) remains among the few memorable films about the American Revolution. Director John Ford's first Technicolor production benefits immeasurably from the Oscar-nominated cinematography of Bert Glennon and Ray Rennahan. Though episodic and slow moving in its narrative structure, Ford doesn't shy away from the brutal savagery of frontier life. Henry Fonda and Edna May Oliver deliver standout portrayals, thus compensating for a miscast Claudette Colbert - the weak link in an otherwise excellent ensemble. Not top-drawer Ford, but entertaining nonetheless.DescriptionLawless frontier. Indian attacks. Settlers protecting themselves the only way they know how-with guns and courage. In the years before the Revolutionary War, the East was as wild as the West would be one hundred years later. Henry Fonda delivers one of his most memorable performances ever as a young frontier leader protecting his family in the backwoods of New York state. Claudette Colbert so-stars as his spirited wife. With a fine supporting cast that also includes Edna May Oliver and John Carradine, this is one of John Ford's most exciting historical dramas.Amazon.comNineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.
Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes as though with the passing of a cloud shadow.
In this, his first color film, Ford created indelible images of the dawning of America: a lone wagon making its way through acres of long grass rippling in the wind; the Indians, at the onset of their first raid, seeming to materialize out of the mist, out of the very trunks of trees; a ragged line of farmers with flintlocks passing along a split-rail fence, then resolving into a column, an army, marching toward a distant horizon. (Utah's Wasatch mountain country stands in persuasively for upstate New York in pioneer days.) Edna May Oliver scored a best-supporting-actress Oscar nomination as a memorably crusty frontier widow, while Ward Bond--oddly omitted from the opening credits--claimed a place of honor in the John Ford Stock Company playing Fonda's best friend. --Richard T.
