TroiseSausalito California22009-04-20Entertainment or Propaganda?Being a student of Roman history, the butchery of the facts in this DVD is quite appalling, but I suppose it's no worse than Disney's version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In any event, the melodramatic script is preposterous Hollywood fluff. Anyone who knows anything about the Romans would cringe at O'Toole's scripted part as a Roman governor.

Aside from the fact that the story is ridiculous, and that this is blatant Israeli propaganda, I have to give at least two stars because the Roman uniforms were fairly accurate and the scenes with the siege engine were first rate; also, a smattering of the dialogue was actually passably good.

Acting wasn't bad either. The poor actors made do with what they were given. All that was missing was Charlton Heston. B000S0KYTE50A3STE8U54XN5I9A3STE8U54XN5I9C. J. Thank youDescriptionIn first century A.D., Flavius Silva (Peter O’Toole), commander in Roman Palestine, leads his forces in combat against the remaining Jewish Zealots who have taken refuge in the seemingly impregnable fortress of Masada. There, the engineering and military might of Rome faces the passion and ingenuity of Eleazar Ben Yair (Peter Strauss) and his people. Based on the novel "The Antagonists" by Ernest K. Gann, this epic, 4-part mini-series was shot on location in Israel.Amazon.com essential videoThis 1981 television miniseries, based on Ernest K. Gann's historical novel The Antagonists, is a dramatization of a documented revolt by nearly a thousand Jerusalem Jews against Roman oppressors in A.D. 72 to 73. Following a city-wide siege by Rome's soldiers, Jewish Zealots move into a fortress in the mountains of Masada, from which they present a defense strong enough to convince the enemy to negotiate. Peter O'Toole, in all his golden dignity, plays Cornelius Flavius Silva, commander of the Roman legions, and Peter Strauss is Zealot leader Eleazar ben Yair. Both are outstanding as representatives from each side trying, in good faith, to find a way out of the deadlocked situation. Unfortunately, neither realizes that Rome has no intention of yielding, resulting in one of the greatest tragedies in Jewish history. A strong cast of character actors--David Warner, Barbara Carrera, Timothy West, and Anthony Quayle--is rewardingly watchable, the action and sets are persuasive without overwhelming the story's human dimension, and direction by Boris Sagal (The Omega Man) is crisp and enthralling. This was a pleasure to watch when it was first broadcast, and it holds up very well today. --Tom KeoghAmazon.com"A victory? What have we won?" laments a breathtaking Peter O'Toole as the Roman warrior Flavius Silva. "We've won a rock in the middle of a wasteland, on the shores of a poisoned sea." Thus does Masada, the epic 1981 miniseries about a horrific battle in ancient Palestine, echo the terrible toll of war in general, and of the brutal conflicts in today's Middle East in particular. Masada, from the golden age of miniseries (Roots, Shogun), is a transportive viewing event--shot on location, and apparently no expense spared.
The film retells (with some dramatic license) the true story of an uprising in Palestine of a ragtag band of Jews, in a fortress called Masada, who refuse to surrender to the governing Romans. O'Toole, as Flavius Silva, is the brilliant commander who, over the course of several years of trying, and failing, to breach Masada, comes to regard the leader of his foes, Eleazar ben Yair (the charismatic Peter Strauss), with a certain amount of respect and awe. If left to Flavius, he might have simply leave the holdout fortress and return to the Italy he so longs for; but the Roman emperor demands victory--at any cost.
The performances are uniformly crisp and believable; the direction by Boris Sagal, economical; the screenplay, sharp and incisive. David Warner, who won an Emmy for his performance, plays the brutal Roman henchman Falco with seething determination. The location shooting is nothing short of spectacular. There is sorrow in the story of Masada, but an uplifting message in the ability of true believers to create their own destiny. --A.T. Do you understand?

And Chuck Norris doesn't drink soy milk. Got it?

This movie has it all: Chuck Norris, turbo charged Chevy's, Chuck Norris, cowboys, Chuck Norris, martial arts, Chuck Norris, evil midgets, the guy from Kung Fu, and beer... lots and lots of beer.

And the video is educational. It basically covers all the lessons that you would find in Aristotle, but without having to read any ancient Greek stuff.

Lesson 1: Don't shoot Chuck Norris's dog.
Lesson 2: If Chuck Norris wants to take a small arsenal of weapons across the border, Chuck Norris is going to take a small arsenal of weapons across the border. (If you are a postmodernist, Chuck Norris is allowed to transgress the boundaries.)
Lesson 3: If Chuck Norris wants to kill himself, then Chuck Norris will kill himself. Now get him a beer and get rid of these vitamins.
Lesson 4: If you are an evil midget with lots of pinball machines and a revolving wall, you are not immune from justice. And justice is spelled C-H-U-C-K N-O-R-R-I-S.

The only thing that could have made this film more totally awesome would have been killer clowns, baby geniuses or zombies. You must check them out if you haven't already!

I've been a Norris Fan for quite some time, yet I haven't seen all of his movies since he's got over 500 in his library. So I've been catching up on my Chia-Chuck lately, hitting the good & the bad. This movie is quite good!

First of all it has a midget in the movie. And it's not your usual dwarf/elf/stunt-double midget. This little bugger is, basically, cause for all the chaos in the film. Midgets need more positive roles like this one in Hollywood. I'm tired of elf movies.

David Carradine plays a bad guy in this movie, and does it well. I'm used to seeing him as Bill from the Tarantino flicks (and vaguely remember him in Kung Fu). So it was nice to get a younger Bill, and more evil I think.

Norris is his usual bad self. A blend of karate and NRA member he takes out some slimeball with gold teeth and most of everyone else in the movie. And how does Norris get to bed all these hot women? He must have them write it in the script or threatens to quit the movie. In any rate his Chia-Chest pulls them in like the Death Star's tractor beam.

The final showdown is a bid silly, as Norris doesn't really show off his karate against Carradine, until he gives a good backfist to Norris' daughter. Then he goes into "Hulk" mode and almost kicks Carradine's head off.

A great Norris movie that has only 1 flaw: they left the midget behind, with his cute little arms swinging in the air. B00005O06Q41A3UA046AA3DXFDA3UA046AA3DXFDSid the ElfNorth Pole12008-09-30You can't get blood out of a stone, but Chuck Norris can.Lone Wolf McQuade is a movie that has long been on Sid the Elf's "Movies we absolutely must review at some point" list. We knew the possibility for greatness existed because Chuck was involved and he was playing a loner rouge Texas Ranger. If that's not a recipe for success, Sid doesn't know what is. Upon learning that Chuck's co-star in the movie was David Caradine, our level of excitement went up a notch because we knew there would be some terrific B fight scene. So we finally took the oportunity to watch the flick that was a huge inspiration for Walker Texas Ranger. In fact, one-half Sid is seriously considering taking a cue from Ricky Bobby and naming one kid Lone Wolf and another McQuade. Also, to take things up a notch, we had Santa with us watching the flick, and it was so good that he stayed awake for almost the whole thing.

If there has ever been a better begining to a movie, Sid will eat his pointy elf hat. You have a group of Mexican bandits, or banditos, wreaking havoc and causing chaos on their horses even though the film is set in 1983. Anyway, the leader of the gang wore only a black vest, and he had no business not wearing a shirt. The film is set in sunny El Paso, Texas so thankfully, the gang leader's gold tooth glistened in the sun brilliantly. We cannot emphasize this enough, this guy looked like he smelled as bad as anyone has ever smelled. It ends up that these banditos kill a couple of state troopers, but the whole scene is being watched by J.J. McQuade(Norris) from the top of a hill. Obviously, a battle ensuses in which Chuck offs like 5 guys by haphazardly spraying bullets in their general direction while spinning around. Breathtaking. Later, Chuck's captain attemps to pair him up with a young but talented cop named Kayo. We said it even before Norris could, "Chuck works alone." Then we get a glimpse into McQuade's personal life. We see McQuade's shack and his pet wolf. The house is deplorable. It looks like a tornado hit it and the fridge is stocked with nothing but brew. Well done, Chuck. Then we get to see Norris take some target practice on homemade targets. Trust us, this was hilarious. He has an ex-wife and a daughter who is dating a swell guy who thinks McQuade is the tops. McQuades daughter and her boyfriend are not doing anything parked in a car atop a hill when they see an Army cargo convoy being hijacked. Somebody sees them and pushes the car down the hill, killing the boyfriend and injuring the daughter. Bad move, guys. Now McQuade is going to track you down and make you wish you were never born.

McQuade employs the help of Kayo and Federal agent Jackson, played by A.C. Green and his fro/mullett, to track down the hijackers who injured his daughter. McQuade's trail leads him to Rawley Wilkes(Caradine) and Lola Richardson, the woman Wilkes is trying to uncork. However, she takes one look at Chuck and says "Why have hamburger when you can have fillet mignon, I want Chuck and his excessive body hair. I want him to give me a light rash." We've seen that Chuck can kick butt like none other. Now we get to see Caradine put on a martial arts display at a county fair. And it was pretty good. You just know there's a showdown coming. McQuade meets up with Wilkes's sidekick, an elf. That's right, Wilkes's right hand man was a cunning wise-cracking motorized wheelchair-riding brethern of Sid himself. McQuade gets a bit of info about Wilkes' operations and decides to take him down. But, Wilkes is onto McQuade and decides to attack him first. He kidnaps McQuade's daughter and Lola and shoots McQuade's pet wolf. This sends McQuade into a frenzy and he goes with his two helpers to Wilkes's compound. For perhaps the only time in his life, Chuck gets a beatdown by Wilkes' henchmen. They put McQuade in his souped up SUV and bury him alive in the vehicle. McQuade regains consciousness and realizes the situation. Of course he floores the pedal and drives out of the dirt, what else did you expect?

So now it's time for the inevitable McQuade-Wilkes showdown. Lets look at the tale of the tape: McQuade just drove out of being buried alive and energized himslef with a beer, Wilkes just kidnapped two women and shot a pet wolf. Advantage McQuade. McQuade is wearing a sleeveless Army vest with no shirt unerneath, Wilkes is wearing a completely queer white Argyll sweater. Huge advantage McQuade. That's really all you need to know. After getting his butt kicked for a couple minutes, McQuade rallied and whooped Wilkes to a pulp. Chuck never has and never will lose a fight. That's the rule.

We couldn't imagine a better result from a spur of the moment choice to watch Lone Wolf McQuade. It has everything we could ask for. A Santa viewing with tons of borderline disturbing commentary absolutely not suitable for print, Norris and his obscene ammount of chest/shoulder hair, a hot chick, a great villain, a gang of banditos with a perfect leader, a crossbow, and most importantly an elf with a prominent role. The only reason this film got only 4 stars from us is the lag in the middle of the film. Despite this, we can't recomend this film strongly enough. It is an absolute must for Chuck fans, and for those who appreciate a true B Action.DescriptionMartial arts master Chuck Norris (The Delta Force) takes on kung fu king David Carradine (Kung Fu) in this modern-day western/action adventure that packs a wallop! Playing a rebellious Texas Ranger, Norris single-handedly wipes out an entire gang of horse thieves--and that's just the opening scene. From there the plot involves arms smuggling, McQuade's daughter being kidnapped, and a dwarf in an electric wheelchair. But the movie's real trump card is a face-off between Norris and David Carradine of the TV show Kung Fu, who plays a badass villain with a penchant for argyle sweaters (though truth be told, Norris's wardrobe is very 1980s as well). Barbara Carrera makes a suitable bad girl/love interest and science fiction fans will enjoy some familiar faces (Robert Beltran, who would later be part of Star Trek: Voyager, and William Sanderson, a supporting actor from Blade Runner). All in all, an action-packed romp with a reverent, almost mythological view of the Texas Rangers. --Bret Fetzer B00004XMV4Good Guys Wear BlackB00031V23KThe OctagonB0006TPDRUFirewalkerB00031V23UA Force of OneB00004ZBVHBreaker, Breaker163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899498Chuck Norris899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video14133661Kidnapping291421By Theme163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video14133671Loners291421By Theme163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163304Crime163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video463890General163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video722726011General AAS163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163310Thrillers163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video412576Beltran, Robert411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416700Carradine, David416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416714Carrera, Barbara416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422698Farrell, Sharon422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431160Kennedy, Leon Isaac430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439448Norris, Chuck438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video445124Sanderson, William444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video455406Carver, Steve455278( C )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579534( L )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405386011PG405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620900111980 - 1989562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR185F4PEX0WV0GSid the Elf's 2008 Woody AwardsRH5KPLU976PRUThe Coolest Martial Arts Movie VilliansR16QXO9JTUE0E825 essential David CarradineR2KMSSLWZQCZBIFamily Values & Roundhouse Kicks: The Films Of Chuck NorrisR1MA3R5NHL4SCBVillain Played By Lead ActorR299XQ6DIFJGLEWhich movies would Sid the Elf jump out of the stocking for?R2G262E0F8VL7XTHEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TOR17N11OZEK86SZFavorite Films & T.V. The scene is there and intact.

This is a non-remastered DVD. Still in 2.0 stereo sound and with minimal extras.

The movie is great. Good to see Connery back and in charge. One of the funnest rides I've had in a long time.

If not for the aged print and stereo sound, this could easily be a 5 star product. Highly recommended for any fan of 007 or the action/spy genre in general.B00004WEJZ10A27FPKOKRNWKJMA27FPKOKRNWKJMOldSpookOldSpookVA02009-04-10Dumb and Dumber ActressesWhether by direction or lack of script, these two women are terrible in this movie. After investing two hours into the film, you expect a less-hokey, more satisfying ending. Also - and this may be nitpicking, but I was disappointed in not seeing the regular actors in the supporting roles such as Miss Moneypenny, Q, Felix Leiter, etc.

On the positive side, there was plenty of unique action scenes, particularly early on, and the two villains were interesting. I thought Klaus Maria Brandauer was the more intriguing of the two because he was so low-key and looked the "nice guy next door." He wasn't your normal Bond villain.

This had plenty of "skin," for a PG movie, especially with Kim Basinger starring, never being an actress known for hiding her figure. All in all, it's a "fair" Bond and nothing else. Just because Connery is in it, it doesn't mean it's automatically good. Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan proved they could play the role well, too.
B00004WEJZ40A3931VJ55Y4C1NA3931VJ55Y4C1NMartial Arthur02009-03-11A truly underrated gem.I love this movie. But, be forewarned, I also love License To Kill. These are two Bond movies that seem to have either love 'em or hate 'em appeal. I guess because they stray a bit from the norm. This one's maligned because it's not an "official" James Bond film. It's got a few faults, but those are heavily outweighed by the good. In fact, I find myself wanting to re-watch this one more than quite a few other Bond films. It's very refreshing seeing Bond as a human being. Connery's body, like his car, shows wear, but as he puts it best, "it's still in pretty good shape." In fact, the fights in this one are very believable. Sean has a tough time of it in many situations and has to actually think his way out of the box which is extremely refreshing. I've always found real guys struggling to fight their way out of tough situations more exciting than super hero types versus human punching bags which is all too prevalent in films. Here's a quick list of the bad just to get it over with (and to prove I'm not one of those love all Sean Connery Bond guys): no Monty Norman Bond theme (man! but they didn't have the rights), the actor playing M plays it mockingly, Rowan Atkinson's bumbling dufus is totally out of place in this fairly serious entry, not Desmond Llewelyn as Q, some may find the video game scene dated, some may find the running time a little long. Now for the good (oh, yeah!): Connery is fantastic (human, charming, witty, tough, etc.), Barbara Carrera creates one of the sexiest and most wicked Bond villainesses ever, Kim Basinger is smokin' hot, Brandauer's Largo (the main baddie) is one of the slimiest and realistic Bond villain's in history, gorgeous locations and beautiful underwater photography, suspenseful shark scene, the exploding pen (boom!), a terrific opening twist, witty one-liners spoken to perfection by Connery ("I made you all wet.", "Yes, but my martini's still dry."; "Mr. Bond, I need a urine sample. Could you fill this beaker for me?", "From here?"; "You know that making love to Fatima was the greatest pleasure of your life.", "Well, to be perfectly honest, there was this girl in Philadelphia...", "SHUT UP!", ETC.). If you haven't seen this one, definitely check it out. It's a blast!

B00004WEJZ52ARSFBI27KTMALARSFBI27KTMALS. A. BallAlbany, OH22009-01-06Never Say Never Again AwesomeAlthough this James Bond film doesn't get the credit of being one, this is an awesome 007 movie! Sean Connery and his costars Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera are stunning as usual. Great film. Sure to be a pleaser if you have not yet seen it. DescriptionSean Connery is back for his final performance as superagent James Bond in this high-velocity action thriller from the director of The Empire Strikes Back. When two atomic warheads are hijacked by the evil SPECTRE organization, Agent 007 is hurled into an explosive, pulse-pounding race to save the world from nuclear terrorists!Amazon.comAfter years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. In this rehash of Thunderball, Bond is pitted against a worthy underwater villain (Klaus Maria Brandauer); and while the requisite Bond Girls include beauties Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera, they can't save the movie. The script has several truly dumb passages, among them a (gasp) video-game duel between 007 and his nemesis that now looks utterly anachronistic. For Connery fans, however, this widescreen print of the Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) film is a chance to say a final goodbye to a perfect marriage of actor and character. --Tom Keogh B000V3JGI8James Bond Ultimate Collector's Set6304698828From Russia With Love (THX Edition)B00000K0E9ThunderballB000ICM5VCJames Bond Ultimate Edition - Part of an unusual class of big-budgeted 1970s American International projects including The Amityville Horror (1979) and Meteor (1979), the film's money shows in the form of a terrific cast, sweeping locales and artful makeup of the Planet of the Apes team. Based on H.G. Wells' The Island Of Dr. Moreau and a remake of the superior Island of Lost Souls in 1932, the film is a variation on the Frankenstein tale with a mad scientist conducting abominable experiments against nature.

Michael York, at the peak of popularity following the success of The Three Musketeers films, plays shipwreck survivor Andrew Braddock who washes ashore an isolated island in the Pacific. He encounters the fortified compound of Dr. Moreau (Burt Lancaster), a menacing presence with an interest in science and floppy hats. Braddock soon notices deformed servants, eerie howls from the jungle and a laboratory where Moreau burns the midnight oil. An assistant, the mercenary rogue Montgomery (Nigel Davenport), keeps to himself and drinks a lot. There's also the lovely Maria (Barbara Carrera), an oddly distant and confused woman who Moreau coddles with great care. Maria and Braddock have their eyes on each other and when they finally consummate their attraction, with the doctor eerily looking on, the candle-lit scenes are surprisingly sexy.

The film builds towards none-too-shocking revelations as Braddock discovers Moreau is conducting genetic altering experiments on animals of the island. The experiments have not succeeded, and Moreau's paradise is inhabited by menacing tribes of mutant animal/men shuffling around in jungle shadows.

When Braddock finally stumbles upon the cave of human beasts, we are introduced to lionmen, tigermen and bearmen, oh my! The makeup is about as complex as Lon Chaney, Jr.'s turn as The Wolf Man, but no matter. You feel genuine sympathy for the creatures. Richard Basehart's performance as "Sayer of the Law," a role Bela Lugosi played in the original, is excellent. Things take a turn for the creepy as Braddock becomes a prisoner of Moreau's experiments, leading to the film's most intense scenes.

If in the right mood, there's great fun to be found in "The Island of Dr. Moreau." I liked Moreau's compound, a tropical oasis barely holding back the vines of the menacing jungle. The movie is served well by the location filming in the Virgin Islands. The direction of TV veteran Don Taylor is adequate, with several jump-from-your-seat scare scenes popular in the day. The conclusion feels abrupt, as Braddock and Maria frantically attempt to escape the chaos of the island. It's abundantly clear Maria is one of Moreau's experiments (her character was a panther woman in the original). In fact, producers unwisely changed the original ending where she reverts to animal form. If you look closely, the final shot of Maria shows her face to be misshapen, with a quick edit creating the weak illusion of a happy ending.

Oh well, this is a great discovery for lovers of old-fashioned horror films, with the fine work of Lancaster and York giving this tale an enjoyable touch of class.B00005K3OB40A1IT9VY8Z9RG92A1IT9VY8Z9RG92G. D. Williamsgareth37USA02008-11-10The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977)

Based on the H.G. Wells' 1896 novel, this film ventures into the realms of human eugenics and genetic alterations. Based on the evolutionary tenets, the film speeds up the cosmic time table in producing men from animals in a short span of days

Like all created societies, the law must be given by the lawgiver. Dr. Moreau is the creator and lawgiver. The chimeras revere him as their god.

All is harmonious until Andrew Braddock washes a shore. He falls in love with the mysterious Maria who has a strange connection to Dr. Moreau and the island. Braddock begins questioning the research of Moreau.

The tension between the two men builds until the tragic climax.

After Moreau murders Montgomery, the caretaker of the compound, the chimeras begin to question their god. Montgomery had reached his point of human morality and challenged Moreau. Sometimes, when a person takes a stand on moral principle, it results in their death.

The Sayer of the Law, played brilliantly by Richard Baseheart, is the leader of the chimeras who repeats the law given by Moreau. The cadence of their recitation is very haunting.

The ending of the film is a sad commentary on the noble scientist who wanted to benefit humanity, but in the end his own arrogance and self deification led to the tragic lost of his humanity and paradise.

Burt Lancaster is in top form as Moreau. He seems to relish the part.

Braddock, played by Michael York, is the moral compass in the film. The struggle between animal and man is brilliantly portrayed by Braddock after he is injected with Moreau's experimental biological serum.

Like most films based on novels, the novel provides a different version with rich details. Read the novel as well.
B00005K3OB31AYQF4Z1EQDACUAYQF4Z1EQDACUTyler Reeceburnsville, mn United States12007-01-15What is the Law?After the 1933 horror Classic "Island of Lost Souls" starring Charles Laughton as Dr. Moreau & Bela Lugosi as Sayer of the Law yet another movie adaption of H.G. Wells's classic tale of the dangers of playing God. Shipwreck victim Andrew (Michael York) washes up on a tropical island and is taken in by Dr. Moreau (Burt Lancaster), who lords over a compound staffed by some distinctly odd-looking servants. Also along for the ride are the mysteriously beautiful Maria, menacing shadows in the jungle, and lots and lots of cages in the House of Pain. While not as eerily creepy as its predecessor, The Island of Doctor Moreau has some fun makeup tricks and a good tiger fight or two, not to mention a thorough discussion of legal nuance by the island's "natives" ("What is the law?" "Not to walk on all fours!"). Definitely a fine afternoon's entertainment. Shot in 1994 and released in 1996, "Love Is All There Is" is a fairly funny little romp. Jolie's career of course skyrocketed with her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Girl Interrupted" in 2000 and went on to "Alexander," "Taking Lives," "Gone in 60 Seconds" & "Beyond Borders." She's set to star next year with Robert DeNiro & Matt Damon in "The Good Shepard." As Gina Malacici, she takes over in the local community theatre production when the fat Juliet falls off the balcony and breaks her leg. TV soap opera star Nathaniel Marston plays Rosario Cappamezza who is the Romeo. Hormones kick into full gear for the two and the final scene in the play where Romeo kisses the dead Juliet turns into a major make-out, leaving the dead Romeo with a giant erection. Joseph Bologna as father Mike is suffiently embarrased as is his wife Sadie played by Lanie Kazan who went on to star in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Bologna also served as co-director for the film with his wife Renee Taylor and had his lone Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for 1970's "Lovers & Other Strangers." Paul Sorvino who played Henry Kissinger in the 1995 film "Nixon" plays Count Malacici who is a rival caterer to Cappamezza's. Thrown into the mix is co-director Renee Taylor who was in the 2004 version of "Alfie" as the nutty psychic Mona who prescribes candle dolls with erections to enhance Mike & Sadie's love life. Nicaraguan/American actress Barbara Carrera who was Fatima Blush in the 1983 James Bond film "Never Say Never Again" plays the mother of the bride, balancing decorum with a vengeful temper. Dick Van Patton and TV's "Hawaiian Eye" Connie Stevens have a silly scene as an older couple having an affair in a parking lot. The late William Hickey whose lone Oscar nomination was for "Prizzi's Honor" and also played in the gay Oliver Twist film "Twisted" is the Monsignor who pontificates lightly over the weddings. "Love Is All There Is" does have its share of laughs and the young lovers appear to spark with good romantic chemistry. All in all, this is a good watching experience. Enjoy! DescriptionThis fast-paced and funny twist on Romeo and Juliet is an "extremely funny film" (WBAI Radio)! OscarÂ(r) winner* Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and Lainie Kazan (MyBig Fat Greek Wedding) star in this tale of rival Italian catering families that serves up laughs, love and "a touching slice of home cooking" (Variety)! In a small Bronx community, the Cappamezzas use smoke machines and gaudy cakes to lure customers to their Italian restaurant. Across town, the Malacicis use elegance and grace to entice patrons to theirs. Naturally, the families hate each other. But the pasta really begins to fly when they discover that young Rosario Cappamezza (Nathaniel Marston) and Gina Malacici (Jolie) have fallen in love! From first course to last, Love Is All There Is offers "comedy at its very best" (WBAI Radio)! *1999: Supporting Actress, Girl, InterruptedB00008DDW9Without EvidenceB0006Z2LKQMojave MoonB00000JGOJPlaying By HeartB000274TJ4True WomenB0000ZG072Hell's Kitchen163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722747011General AAS163375Romantic Comedies163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video413586Bologna, Joseph411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416714Carrera, Barbara416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427892Hickey, William426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430112Jolie, Angelina429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430818Kazan, Lainie430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440840Patten, Dick Van440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447456Sorvino, Paul444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448020Stevens, Connie444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450912Vigoda, Abe450514( V )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579534( L )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR3RYHTH2EKIH3NThe world according to Angelina Jolie.R3JR9EM8PF1NL3The Angelina Jolie Movie Collection1OMUX089CGJOCAngelina Jolie on DVD: 1993-1999201KCAPHN4IRYAngelina Jolie Movies1GCI8GDGWTAWBActresses - Angelina Jolee18EAYPCXOVNC0Angelina Jolie MoviesE0VMLNSEN67GReasons why I love Angelina Jolie33Q3GPCALVWRUThe Best Angelina Movies!2R0K4SCFDHBC4Lordess Angelina Jolie's ListB000B8IA1Chttp://www.amazon.com/Love-at-Stake-Patrick-Cassidy/dp/B000B8IA1C%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000B8IA1C57206http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZX2643K5L._SL75_.jpg7551http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZX2643K5L._SL160_.jpg160109http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZX2643K5L.jpg500342http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZX2643K5L._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZX2643K5L._SL75_.jpg7551http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZX2643K5L._SL160_.jpg160109http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZX2643K5L.jpg500342Patrick CassidyKelly PrestonGeorgia BrownBarbara CarreraBud Cort1.85:1R (Restricted)DVDTWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTJohn Moffitt9781404997042ColorDVDSubtitledWidescreenNTSC1404997040100EnglishOriginal LanguageEnglishSubtitledFrenchSubtitled1498USD$14.98MGM (Video & DVD)1253011988-045871018542DVDABIS_DVDMGM (Video & DVD)12005-11-1587MGM (Video & DVD)1988-04Love at Stake027616125309275USD$2.75513USD$5.1337130011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DER0.00NewnewsvJ9ovl1Fm%2FiAnVFzexTZPQ10uxa0nq2Yz6dqSthwNnEm50MrzlCSzhyY6aF53KQutzrotieLJ77FdRY5JTQTx%2BUhiA4ZcyE1349USD$13.49149USD$1.4910Usually ships in 24 hoursnow00-114.572B000B8IA1C50A2DAJL1WMLYR7DA2DAJL1WMLYR7DC. As they begin this plan, a sexy stranger (Barbara Carrera) enters town to visit her cousin...What nobody knows is that this woman actually is a real witch, and she's brewing up a pot of magical mischief. It looks as if someone taped it off broadcast television. The first images, at night, are so dark and muddy it's not even clear what's on the screen. I had really looked forward to having this in my collection but after watching it I threw it in the garbage. Utterly worthless. B00003ES3E40A2B73CL3QSYWLBA2B73CL3QSYWLBDavid BaldwinPhiladelphia,PA USA02008-01-11Interesting Film About Science and EthicsMy review is based on the quality of the production and not the video transfer. This is an extremely muddy transfer that I doubt will be rectified in the future because of the relative obscurity of the film itself. In 1968 director Ralph Nelson tackled the issue of science and ethics in what I consider to be a disappointing result with "Charly". I found that film today as a dated psychedelic artifact. What I found interesting about "Embryo" is the way it tackles life issues. Released in 1976, it came out shortly on the heels of Roe v. Wade and just a few short years before the first test tube baby. Rock Hudson's character isn't some mad scientist who wants to play God. Recently widowed, his reasons for creating life are more altruistic. He even recognizes the necessity of morality to his creation, Victoria(Barbara Carrera), by citing the Bible to her. Unfortunately, beauty and brains do not alone make us human. Even if you are born when you are 25 years old it takes years to develope a core morality. "Embryo" is a compelling film with a solid performance by Hudson and an alluring one by Carrera.B00003ES3E52A2F2C9IVWJUCQ1A2F2C9IVWJUCQ1Alworth Johnson22006-06-30Barbara's BeautyI remember seeing that movie when I was a teenaged kid. KenaryMillbury, Ma.52005-02-18JACK COLVIN...Oscar Moment????The scene with Rock Hudson in which Jack Colvin (playing Dr. Winston)was torn between medical ethics and mere trust in a dear friend is the pivotal moment in this film. The excruciating agony in which Dr. Winston is debating in his subconscious is no doubt evident in this accomplished actors face. Dr. Winston makes no promise at that time but we can tell that an internal battle will be raging within him until his final decision can be made. Later Dr. Winston, in full operating gear, calls Rock to inform him that he's got what Rock's looking for. Fatigue and uncertainty is worn well on the actors face, for the result( as later we learn) could be disastrous.
Jack Colvin, the greatest character actor of the 20th and possibly the 21st century hits another homerun in this "pre-Jack Mcgee" performance. I believe before Rock Hudson passed on he was quoted as saying, "One of the greatest accomplishments of my life was working with the legendary Jack Colvin."DescriptionRock Hudson stars in this science fiction story of an experiment gone very wrong. He plays a scientist who decides to create a human from basic genetic material. The result is lovely Barbara Carrera (the sexy villainess of 'Never Say Never Again') in the role of the creature grown from an embryo. Although beautiful, she displays not only her physical charms but aberrant and definitely homicidal behavior. As she becomes more erratic, the enamored doctor is faced with perhaps destroying his own creation. Roddy McDowall and Diane Ladd also star in this unusual tale mixing sex with science. Running time: Approx. 106 minutes Includes the original theatrical trailer! Approx. 2 minutes
Bonus Material: Beautiful women turned into monsters (and vice versa!) has been a popular theme in horror and science fiction movies. Usually the spawn of mad science (other times, ancient curses), these tales give a new twist to the concept of Beauty and the Beast. Here is a selection of original theatrical trailers and film clips from movies on the subject of naturally beautiful women created by unnatural means. BalaMe Too Can ReadCarson - hey, we have an IKEA store! - CA USA02009-05-24CONDORMAN - how a nerdy comic book artist became the Vulture of the Western WorldCONDORMAN was a childhood favorite of mine, and, brother, I have been waiting impatiently for a Region 1 DVD to get my mitts on. So it's about time (but now I'm cheesed with the DVD's lack of special features). I find it really hard to be objective with CONDORMAN, this film being such a cherished memory. Having seen it again very recently, I can't help but note the datedness, the laughably rendered laser beam effects, and that hokey theme song and the cheesy cartoon Condorman in the opening credits. But mostly I happen to think that the film does stand the test of time, in terms of its watchability, its humor, and its sense of wonder and adventure.

Some SPOILERS now, peppered throughout.

A conscientious comic book artist, Woody Wilkins won't put anything in his comics which his characters couldn't do in real life. As such, the movie opens in Paris with Woody gigged out in full Condorman regalia and leaping off the Eiffel Tower to test his Condorman wings. It sucks for him that the wings malfunction and he ends up diving into the Seine river. So right away you get a sense of what this cat is like: an adventurous dreamer.

Woody thinks that his friend Harry's job in the CIA is fraught with excitement and skullduggery, even as Harry insists that he's merely a file clerk. But when Harry is tasked with finding a civilian to handle a simple courier assignment in Istanbul, he taps Woody for the mission. In Istanbul Woody meets the mysterious Natalia and impresses her when, in a pretty hilarious scene, he inadvertently takes out several enemy agents.

Cut to some time later, and we finally get to the central plot. The CIA learns that a Soviet KGB operative codenamed the Bear wants to defect, but that the Bear wants only the agent known as Condorman to act as the primary facilitator. Woody is initially reluctant, but caves when he learns that the Bear is actually Natalia (who's mistaken Woody for a top agent) and that the CIA has agreed to bring his comic book designs to life. The rest of the film treats us to more globetrotting exploits, zany secret agent and superhero antics, and a whiff of romance.

So, if you're a kid at heart, CONDORMAN should be right up your alley. One of its strongest points is that it does a good job of massaging your sense of wish fulfillment. Because who hasn't daydreamed of accomplishing daring deeds, of coming out the hero and winning that girl? CONDORMAN is awesomely nerdtacular.

Michael Crawford, if you remember him at all, is more famous for stuff like HELLO, DOLLY and for playing the Phantom of the Opera on stage (for which, to give him his just due, he garnered massive props). Crawford is skinny, gangly, boasts a non-heroic voice, and isn't who you first think of when drawing up the prototypical intrepid man of action. But he's good as the comic book creator/nerd with aspirations of derring-do. This is a Disney flick, so, it's certainly wholesome enough and its sensibilities lean toward the youngsters. A film like this can get away with a character like Woody Wilkins, a "foolish dreamer who draws comic books" who then takes on the identity of one of his creations.

It helps that Condorman has a supporting cast who mostly plays it straight, notably Oliver Reed as the sinister Russian masterspy Krakov, Barbara Carrera as the exotic femme fatale Natalia, and James Hampton who plays Woody's amiable pal and CIA contact Harry Oslo. Jean-Pierre Kalfon, the sorta scary one-eyed Russian hitman Morovich, does it over-the-top, but, really, what else can you do when you're sporting a menacing glass eye and tearing down the Yugoslavian roads in an intimidating black Porsche? And, man, watching this film again just brings back those good old days, when the Iron Curtain was still up and the U.S. and the USSR were still kicking it Cold War. The prevailing thought back then was that the Russian Bear would be a superpower forever...

CONDORMAN is loosely based on Robert Sheckley's novel The Game of X, which I haven't read but have just now ordered online because I hear good things about it. Catering to Woody's intent that Condorman be an international crime fighter, his plan to help Natalia defect involves their navigating a circuitous route, from Yugoslavia to the Swiss Alps to a final showdown in Monte Carlo. Considering that they end up running a gauntlet of enemy operatives in all their stops, they might as well have taken a direct flight home. But where's the fun in that, right? I thought it a perfect touch that Krakov is able to anticipate Condorman and Natalia's itinerary simply by reading Woody's comic books.

When I saw this as a kid, I was totally enthralled by the James Bond-type gadgetry. Even now, I still get a kick out of watching the sluggish Gypsy conveyance transform into the sleek Condormobile and then into a hovercraft. The laser guns, however, sucketh big. Note that CONDORMAN is more a lighthearted spy thriller than a superhero caper. Woody as Condorman appears briefly in the opening sequence and then in the last act. And, as Condorman, he doesn't really indulge in hands on fighty fights but instead settles for foiling the bad guys from a distance, soaring on wings from above and then firing off missiles at them from his Condorboat. I dug the costume, though, and as an L.A. Dodger fan, I'm glad the film closes out in Dodgers stadium, even as Woody receives his next cloak & dagger assignment. I wish, though, that we'd seen something of Woody's other creations. I can't help being intrigued by the likes of Gopher Boy, Bazooka Boy, and Laser Girl. Where oh where can I get me some of those fun Zowie Comics?B00000IQB610AW2QSBNKZKSNTAW2QSBNKZKSNTRobert KeithBaskervillesNew York, NY USA02009-04-17I'm amazed to see 5 star reviews.People must have affection for this film from childhood. About Woody (Crawford) who is a comic book writer who's best friend Harry (Michael J Fox's father in Teen Wolf/Longest Yard (original) guy who dies) is a file clerk for a spy company, who when left in charge to send a civilian to Istanbul to deliver some spy papers, he bumbled his way into making a top KGB agent (Natalia) believe he is a top agent and later wishes to have him help her defect to America.

Woody takes on the challenge and finds himself being chased by Natalia's boss/lover or whatever and his team of henchmen while Woody pulls out all his toys and gadgets to help aid there escape.

Seeing this again many years later, I can see why it it more of a cult classic then a very popular action/adventure comedy. But, it is still a lot better then most of the **** that floods the shelves these days, and this one is very underrated as a b grade comedy.

The character of Woody reminds me of Maxwell Smart, a bumbling secret agent who doesn't always escape by skill or outsmarting the bad guys, but by unintentional luck, but gets the girl at the end. Just try to imagine Maxwell Smart wants to be Batman at the same time, and that is about what Condorman is.

A lot of humor, zaney antics, car chases and star wars lasers.. all blended in for a fun ride.

Ignore anyone selling this second hand on amazon or anywhere else for over 20 bucks... they are ripping you off hard. The DVD quality is not that great, it kind of looks like it was done straight from an old VHS to DVD without bothering to clean it up. And there is no bonus features. This DVD deserves more respect then this, and I hope Disney decide to do a special edition of it someday.

Oh yeah, not to forget, the second hand sellers are selling the out of print region 1 version... the DVD is still in print in region 4 for about 10 bucks, and includes another film with it too. And don't worry about the region stuff, they play in any old computers DVD player. So I'd recommend doing the smart thing and finding the ones still in print and pay a whole heap less then these clowns prices.

and to the person who is selling it for 500 bucks, BWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, you have a b grade movie there, not the holey grail.B00000IQB654A25M3X1YGBQXAJA25M3X1YGBQXAJTHE REAL HARRY K.Please Stand UpBoston42006-06-22ASHAMED!!!I am a little ashamed that my first review on Amazon wasn't this movie, instead I reviewed King Kong (new remake) - SHAME ON ME!!! This movie is fantastic! I remember watching it as a very young child and was mezmerized by it! It has a story, a creative concept, and a steller cast. The idea at the time was exciting because it was around the time of The Greatest American Hero and has some of the same kind of humor in it.

RE-RELEASE THIS DISNEY! I'm begging! I want to see if it holds up over time!!!Amazon.comA pre-Phantom Michael Crawford plays Woody, a goofy cartoonist-accidentally-turned-spy in this Cold War-era lark. In Paris visiting his friend, a CIA "file clerk," Woody is sent on a cloak-and-dagger errand and is mistaken for an operative by his beautiful Russian counterpart. She then contacts the agency with the demand that he, and only he, help her defect. Writer adopts comic book persona and voilà: Condorman! This wide-winged hero thwarts the pesky Soviets at every turn. From the old run-down farmer's truck he's driving emerges a flashy race car that outruns a fleet of Russian vehicles. Later, in a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang moment, the car sprouts floaters, allowing the pair to escape their pursuers by sea. Barbara Carrera's Natalia--the true spy of the two--is really just along for the ride. It's Condorman's show, as confirmed by the ending: a shot-filled showdown off the shores of Monte Carlo.--Kimberly HeinrichsB0003JAONGCloak & DaggerB00005JMVVSummer MagicB00005JLJCIn Search of the CastawaysB00005JN0QThat Darn Cat!B00016XNQQThe Scarlet Pimpernel163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290941Comic Action163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video463878Espionage163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163310Thrillers163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291110Assumed Identity291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video909826Cold War909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video410836Arden, Robert409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416714Carrera, Barbara416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419078Crawford, Michael416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420876Dobtcheff, Vernon419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422008Elcar, Dana421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443046Reed, Oliver442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video458228Jarrott, Charles458164( J )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video300382All Disney Titles300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video4035907-11 Years403586By Age300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video400126All Titles300385Live Action300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video400120Comedy300385Live Action300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671501011Letterboxed390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405386011PG405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620900111980 -
