One man meets a hairy guy and they've maintained a relationship throughout the film. This movie immediately opens with all of them reading about this mysterious virus that seems to be attacking gay men. At first, it seemed to be associated with gay men who do poppers. This virus has earned a nickname, "gay cancer". It wasn't until a couple of years later that this virus was finally termed AIDS. <br /> <br />The whole AIDS was not still not clear to people, including gay men. In this film, you'll see how some gay men are uncomfortable with AIDS and especially those afflicted. You'll see men afraid to have sex. Afraid to kiss. Heck, you'll even see one washing his hands and face vigorously after greeting his friend who is dying from AIDS. <br /> <br />The time frame between the death of one friend to another friend having AIDS is quick. The movie jumps one year to another that surrounds an afflicted friends. You'll think that the movie doesn't build up enough for you to get emotional. Not true. You'll cry! So, have a box of Kleenex ready. <br /> <br />I love this movie and I cannot believe that I haven't seen it earlier. I often hear about older gay men retelling stories of the 70's and 80's on how gay life use to be as well as witnessing the deaths of their close friends to AIDS. Today, those affliced with HIV/AIDS are living longer, thanks to modern medicine. However, I cannot imagine what it was like, living in fear of a virus that seemed to be targeting gay men and the doctors could not seem to treat it. <br /> <br />Overall, it's a good movie that's worth your time. But this film did not manage to explain how can a young doctor turn into a "freedom" fighter willing and ready to kill in the name of self preservation and against oppression of the poor. <br /> <br />If you are going to see this film, I recommend you see "Motorcycle Diaries" first that can at least give one some idea about this young man's motivation to turn his promising future into something very different. <br /> <br />Che's early death makes him a legend. But was he a hero? If that was the case, this film did not convince me so. Also, it would have been better if the film was made in Spanish. This movie explores that struggle somewhat. But it really doesn't illustrate the complexity of Che's involvement in the conflicts whatsoever. Nor does it touch on the subsequent developments that I feel are really important when exploring his life. <br /> <br />Like the reasons why he hated the United States. He considered the U.S. an imperialist power that would prevent any government that seeks to redress the socioeconomic inequalities in Latin America. Powerful, interesting stuff that this movie totally strays away from. <br />Also it avoids the reasons why the CIA, KGB, and eventually even Fidel Castro wanted him dead. This story lacks any in-depth insight on Che's motivations. It also avoids the fact Che played a key role in the Cuban Missle Crisis. <br /> <br />Malcolm X called Che "one of the most revolutionary men." <br />He was a rebel, leader, hero, strict disciplinarian, and killer. He was so driven for peace, but would use ruthless violence to obtain it. He inspired hope, but also a brutal militarism. He also called capitalism a "contest among wolves". <br /> <br />This movie is fairly well made but fails to capture the essence of the man. There are plenty of war scenes, and some philisophical discussions between Che and Castro. So I guess it's worth a look, but is sorely lacking. Despite the presence of the fine actor Eduardo Noriega in the title role and Sonia Braga in a cameo role as Celia, Che's mother, the film is plagued by simplistic dialogue, lack of momentum, choppy editing, and a large cast that would have been a bit more credible had the film been shot in Spanish - the language of all of the actors. Josh Evans provides no insights as to the person of Che or his motivations, but instead relies on the viewer's knowledge of the period to provide the missing lapses in story line. And while many may feel that Che was the more important force in the idealism of the revolution than the leader Fidel Castro, it is doubtful that Castro was as tepid and uninspiring a figure as actor Enrico Lo Verso and the pathetic script make him appear. <br /> <br />With the 'other CHE' of Steven Soderbergh with Benicio Del Toro and a stellar cast due for release soon, it is not surprising that this amateurish film was released direct to DVD. Set in Dublin, Ireland, the movie centers on a recent immigrant from the Congo, Joe Yumba [Eriq Ebouaney] who is accorded asylum status in Ireland. He is given a job as a security officer in a bank and manages to reunite with his 'family', Kala [Fatou N'Diaye] and eight-year-old son Daniel [Brian Eli Ssebunya]. Just as Joe and his family are trying to put the horrors of the past behind them, complications arise when a notorious criminal, Eddie Gilroy [James Frain] and his band of hoodlums kidnap Kala and Daniel, using them as ransom to get Joe to help them gain access to the bank's vaults. <br /> <br />The rest of the movie centers on a couple of things - how Joe tries to turn the tables on the criminals in order to get his family back in one piece, and when things don't go as planned Joe is forced to turn to a mysterious associate from his past, Erasmus [Hakeem Kae Kazim] who is both sinister and enigmatic at the same time. There is also a Det Insp Harbison [Gerard McSorley] hot on Joe's heels, trying to figure out if Joe really is who he says he is or something else entirely. The revelation when it comes is a surprise indeed. <br /> <br />There are many twists and turns in this movie and that made it all the more enjoyable as the viewer is kept guessing for the most part. The acting is credible all-around, especially Eriq Ebouaney's tormented Joe Yumba. He burns up the screen with his commanding presence. My discovery of this film was nothing short of destiny. <br /> <br />Though I had passed it by many a time on the shelf of my favorite video store, never had I given it a second glance. It took the combined forces of my younger brothers' obsessive interest in Ren-fest period pieces and a complete lack of anything to do on Saturday night to bestow this gift of badness to us. <br /> <br />Before anything else is said, let me state with complete sincerity that I love of bad movies and it has always been my opinion that what makes the best bad movies is the complete and utterly unshakable belief on the part of cast and crew that what they are making is a good movie. The only weak items are the two songs from the film "Dick Tracy" and the long sequence "A Weekend in the Country" from "A Little Night Music", but these are more than made up for by stunning performances by Patti Lupone, Bernadette Peters, Daisy Egan, Dorothy Youdon, Glenn Close and many others. An absolute delight. <br /> <br />There are no extras on the DVD but the sound and picture quality are excellent. <br /> <br />This concert is also available as part of "The Sondheim Collection" also available through Amazon. Briefly, the late and underestimated Madeline Kahn blazing through "Getting Married Today", the estimable Dorothy Loudon combining a torch song with a comic response that brings down the house and Bernadette Peters doing full justice to "Not a Day Goes By" from Merrily We Roll Along, one of Sondheim's few commercial failures. But the best is near the last, with Glenn Close giving a beautiful version of the all too overused "Send in the Clowns" (perhaps the best rendition ever) and the closing hymn "Sunday", from Sunday in the Park With George magnificently sung by a choir, nearly as perfect as being able to see the show performed once more. Only missing is Elaine Stritch performing "Ladies Who Lunch" from Company. Had it been included, it would have been absolute perfection.
