Listening to new songs take the place of the old songs that fit perfectly in the movie was UNBEARABLE! (The lousy title must have had something to do with the movie's initial failure, a problem worsened by the film being marketed as <I>Shag: The Movie</I>, a truly dumb idea.) <I>Shag</I> is in the tradition of Spring Break pictures, a thoroughly formulaic stroll through the conventions of the minigenre: beachside romance, a wild party, one tender deflowering, and lots of rock & roll. The time is 1963, as three gal friends trick their soon-to-be-married pal (Phoebe Cates) into one final all-girl fling in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Cates is engaged to a local well-bred stick (Tyrone Power Jr.), but soon she's tempted by a beach boy (Robert Rusler) bound for Yale (mm-hmm). The so-so material is buoyed by lovely Annabeth Gish, as the supposedly pudgy one in the group, and Bridget Fonda, as a prematurely sophisticated sexpot. After a while it's easy enough to relax and enjoy the girls' breezy adventures, which are served up without the soap opera melodrama of the similarly tooled <I>Where the Boys Are</I>. Maybe Not. This is actually more of an interesting movie than we would be inclined to give it credit for. It basically shows us the lives of different types of high school students. (Not to mention some teachers.) <br /> <br />Stacey and Linda are interesting. Stacey is the young naive girl ever ready to shed her virginity. She follows the advice of her friend Linda (who means well), but does not think as much as she should. Stacey ends up getting hurt, but she grows to the point where she sees that having love and friendship is much nicer than simple sex. <br /> <br />Linda is the more sexually experienced girl, but rather predictably, she gets hurt with her own fascination. <br /> <br />Mark and Damone are an interesting pair. Damone is the ever sexual predator. But he carries a charm despite his repulsive actions. And to some extent, he does realize that some of his actions were wrong. <br /> <br />Mark is the 'geek.' But we also come to realize that he is not only on the smarter side, but he is in fact a really nice person. Undoubtedly, under Linda's advice, Stacey gets upset when Mark isn't ready for sex. But the truth is that just because Mark wasn't ready for sex, that did NOT mean he didn't care about Stacey. And soon afterwards, Stacey gets HURT badly. (Going back to Mark, there is something really funny about how everyone tries to see his answers during the final exam.) <br /> <br />Charles Jefferson is the one weak link here. He is a stereotypical Jock, and he offers no real personality. The wreck of his car is an annoying intrusion, and it really doesn't fit. Unlike the other characters, he does no real growing. <br /> <br />Undoubtedly, the favorite pair in this movie is Sean Penn and Mr. Hand. While they have a bad teacher/student relationship, at times it looks like a father/son relationship. Mr. Hand is hard, but he is fair: "Get used to doing your own business on your own time. You wouldn't want me to come to your house some evening and discuss U.S. History would you?" As hard as Mr. Hand gets, he is right when he says: "This class is for your own benefit." The reconciliation of Mr. Hand and Sean Penn is drawn rather well. <br /> <br />Moving on, Stacey's brother Brad is worth mentioning as well. He is probably the closest to a 'normal kid.' He works hard in jobs he really doesn't like; but he knows he needs the money. In an especially sympathetic moment, he is brutally fired from his job for a DUMB reason. And he is especially helpful to Stacey when she has BIG problem. In many ways, it's so appropriate that Brad has his moment of glory in the last scene. <br /> <br />Another character worth mentioning is the eccentric Mr. Vargas. He appears to be a strange teacher, but he is really likable: "Look, I am a little slow today. I just switched to SANKA. So PLEASE, have a heart." There is something utterly comical about how the students are shocked when they see that Mr. Vargas's wife is especially beautiful. Like Mark, he is strange, but nice, as well as smart. <br /> <br />In all honesty, this is not just empty comedy. It shows us real students who have weaknesses and problems. But they are also likable and even Damone has some notable redeeming qualities. The teachers are not without likable qualities either. <br /> <br />This movie is worthy of at least a chance. McLaughlinNaperville, IL, USA12009-03-05 Great movie, even after its prime I recently saw this movie for the first time, and while it is slightly outdated, it was still very entertaining. There isn't really a main character, just a conglomeration of role players, and that helps the movie turn out well. Spicoli is hilarious as the high-guy at school who cares about nothing but warm weather, surfing, getting high, and saying "dude;" Judge Reinhold was in there as the normal guy who gets sick of the same old stuff, different day routine of his life; the girls in the movie are attractive, but without personality, as expected, the dorky guy who likes one of the attractive girls, plus the guy who is just a total a-hole, Dimone - they all blend in together very well for a fun, fast-paced movie. <br /> <br />I think everyone can identify, in at least some way, with one of the major characters, or even a minor one (in some respects, now again, I'm saying this in a relative comparison to the 80's) and this makes the movie somewhat real. <br /> <br />A good movie to watch with the guys, or just in a group environment. This film about teens despite its R rating has probably been seen by most teens of the time and although it shows that it's a "time capsule" of sorts for the 80s contains universal themes about teens that in many ways still remain relevant today which probably explains its continued popularity despite its age. What teenager anywhere in the world is not obsessed about sex, video/arcade games etc and has to deal with peer pressure issues? <br /> <br />I remember my first introduction to "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" came in the form of the soundtrack which my brother bought all those years ago. I remember I really liked the tracks which were mostly written by the individual members of one of my all-time favourite groups The Eagles or as in the case of Jackson Browne those who wrote songs for them. Not all the great tracks from the film are on the album though as strangely enough the Go-Gos and Tom Petty's tracks are not there which may be because of contractual reasons but it was still a good album for a soundtrack. <br /> <br />Sean Penn is very good as Spicoli but the rest of the cast also turn in very creditable performances as well and documents high school life in the U.S. in the 80s as well as "American Grafitti" does for the 50s. This dvd version though is not the optimal one that is out there and the picture and sound quality isn't that great. They still look pretty real. What I like best about this film is that it took the hard edge off the first one and made it more of a comedy. To me, this sequel was more entertaining than the first film and one I would watch a lot more times. It's also family-friendly. <br /> <br />There are so many jokes and wild scenes in here it would many viewings to catch them all. For movie buffs, it's especially fun with all the references to other films in here. <br /> <br />However, it should be pointed out that there are still plenty of scenes where the gremlins are nasty and attack people, so the film is still horror-like in that respect. It may be played for comedic purposes, but these creatures are anything but friendly. I love the chemistry and interaction between the characters of Phoebe Cates(Elizabeth) and Rik Mayall(Drop Dead Fred). <br /> <br />However, the really enjoyable part of the movie for me came when Elizabeth was able to travel to her past and free her little girl version. The translation almost works, but the execution is flawed. Phoebe Cates is a recently separated young woman who suddenly begins to see her supposedly imagined childhood friend (Drop Dead Fred) after moving back into her mother's home. Is he a manifestation of her secret desires to ditch the boorish spouse? Or was he real all along? Rik Mayall is a limber, carrot-topped Brit with the lamentable assignment of trying to make us laugh with vulgar, sophomoric trickery. Maybe Not. This is actually more of an interesting movie than we would be inclined to give it credit for. It basically shows us the lives of different types of high school students. (Not to mention some teachers.) <br /> <br />Stacey and Linda are interesting. Stacey is the young naive girl ever ready to shed her virginity. She follows the advice of her friend Linda (who means well), but does not think as much as she should. Stacey ends up getting hurt, but she grows to the point where she sees that having love and friendship is much nicer than simple sex. <br /> <br />Linda is the more sexually experienced girl, but rather predictably, she gets hurt with her own fascination. <br /> <br />Mark and Damone are an interesting pair. Damone is the ever sexual predator. But he carries a charm despite his repulsive actions. And to some extent, he does realize that some of his actions were wrong. <br /> <br />Mark is the 'geek.' But we also come to realize that he is not only on the smarter side, but he is in fact a really nice person. Undoubtedly, under Linda's advice, Stacey gets upset when Mark isn't ready for sex. But the truth is that just because Mark wasn't ready for sex, that did NOT mean he didn't care about Stacey. And soon afterwards, Stacey gets HURT badly. (Going back to Mark, there is something really funny about how everyone tries to see his answers during the final exam.) <br /> <br />Charles Jefferson is the one weak link here. He is a stereotypical Jock, and he offers no real personality. The wreck of his car is an annoying intrusion, and it really doesn't fit. Unlike the other characters, he does no real growing. <br /> <br />Undoubtedly, the favorite pair in this movie is Sean Penn and Mr. Hand. While they have a bad teacher/student relationship, at times it looks like a father/son relationship. Mr. Hand is hard, but he is fair: "Get used to doing your own business on your own time. You wouldn't want me to come to your house some evening and discuss U.S. History would you?" As hard as Mr. Hand gets, he is right when he says: "This class is for your own benefit." The reconciliation of Mr. Hand and Sean Penn is drawn rather well. <br /> <br />Moving on, Stacey's brother Brad is worth mentioning as well. He is probably the closest to a 'normal kid.' He works hard in jobs he really doesn't like; but he knows he needs the money. In an especially sympathetic moment, he is brutally fired from his job for a DUMB reason. And he is especially helpful to Stacey when she has BIG problem. In many ways, it's so appropriate that Brad has his moment of glory in the last scene. <br /> <br />Another character worth mentioning is the eccentric Mr. Vargas. He appears to be a strange teacher, but he is really likable: "Look, I am a little slow today. I just switched to SANKA. So PLEASE, have a heart." There is something utterly comical about how the students are shocked when they see that Mr. Vargas's wife is especially beautiful. Like Mark, he is strange, but nice, as well as smart. <br /> <br />In all honesty, this is not just empty comedy. It shows us real students who have weaknesses and problems. But they are also likable and even Damone has some notable redeeming qualities. The teachers are not without likable qualities either. <br /> <br />This movie is worthy of at least a chance. McLaughlinNaperville, IL, USA12009-03-05 Great movie, even after its prime I recently saw this movie for the first time, and while it is slightly outdated, it was still very entertaining. There isn't really a main character, just a conglomeration of role players, and that helps the movie turn out well. Spicoli is hilarious as the high-guy at school who cares about nothing but warm weather, surfing, getting high, and saying "dude;" Judge Reinhold was in there as the normal guy who gets sick of the same old stuff, different day routine of his life; the girls in the movie are attractive, but without personality, as expected, the dorky guy who likes one of the attractive girls, plus the guy who is just a total a-hole, Dimone - they all blend in together very well for a fun, fast-paced movie. <br /> <br />I think everyone can identify, in at least some way, with one of the major characters, or even a minor one (in some respects, now again, I'm saying this in a relative comparison to the 80's) and this makes the movie somewhat real. <br /> <br />A good movie to watch with the guys, or just in a group environment. This film about teens despite its R rating has probably been seen by most teens of the time and although it shows that it's a "time capsule" of sorts for the 80s contains universal themes about teens that in many ways still remain relevant today which probably explains its continued popularity despite its age. What teenager anywhere in the world is not obsessed about sex, video/arcade games etc and has to deal with peer pressure issues? <br /> <br />I remember my first introduction to "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" came in the form of the soundtrack which my brother bought all those years ago. I remember I really liked the tracks which were mostly written by the individual members of one of my all-time favourite groups The Eagles or as in the case of Jackson Browne those who wrote songs for them. Not all the great tracks from the film are on the album though as strangely enough the Go-Gos and Tom Petty's tracks are not there which may be because of contractual reasons but it was still a good album for a soundtrack. <br /> <br />Sean Penn is very good as Spicoli but the rest of the cast also turn in very creditable performances as well and documents high school life in the U.S. in the 80s as well as "American Grafitti" does for the 50s. This dvd version though is not the optimal one that is out there and the picture and sound quality isn't that great. And "Gremlins" is a gloriously unconventional Christmas movie -- a postcard-pretty view of suburban middle-America, splattered with gore, nasty little gremlins and a truly wicked sense of humour (expressed often in movie send-ups). <br /> <br />Randall (Hoyt Axton) spots a tiny adorable creature -- a mogwai -- in a small Chinatown shop, and wants to buy it as a Christmas present for his son. The owner refuses, but his grandson secretly sells it to Randall. <br /> <br />Randall's son Billy (Zach Galligan) is delighted by the fuzzy lightphobic mogwai, whom he names Gizmo. But it soon becomes clear that Gizmo is full of surprises: when water is accidentally splashed on him, he spontaneously generates a litter of NEW mogwai. The ringleader "Stripe" tricks Billy into feeding them after midnight, transforming them into scaly, dangerous "gremlins. <br /> <br />And after a gremlin tumbles into a pool, Billy realizes that the town is about to be swarmed with them -- attacking vicious old Mrs. Deagle, ramming snowplows, murdering kindly teachers, and trashing a tavern with Billy's love interest Kate (Phoebe Cates). As the town descends into gremlinized chaos, the two humans (and Gizmo) must find a way to wipe out the horde... and if they miss only one, it'll start all over again. <br /> <br />Personally I find most Christmas movies a little too sappy and sentimental. So for people who feel that way, a Yuletide horror/comedy is simply ideal -- it's sort of a mad hybrid of early Peter Jackson splattergore, Frank Capra snow-sprinkled Christmastime, and a bunch of sly movie homages and send-ups ("Forbidden Planet," "Wizard of Oz" and "Snow White" amongst others). <br /> <br />But the real fun is in watching the movie's balance between nasty and cuddly -- Joe Dante happily veers between sweet moments and grotesquely funny violence (such as Billy's mom messily killing gremlins with a variety of kitchen implements), with the best example being the malevolent Mrs. Deagle being flung out an upstairs window by fa-la-la-la-LAing gremlins. Completely sick, and gutsplittingly funn. <br /> <br />And Dante sprinkles it with more G-rated comedy that borders on cartoonish without quite crossing, such as the kid in the Christmas tree costume ("Don't ask!") and the gremlins destroying a local pub when they aren't watching Disney movies (is this a message about Disney?). It all climaxes in some literally explosive showdowns with the gremlins -- and particularly with Stripe, their ghastly little leader. <br /> <br />Galligan and Cates are thoroughly solid as the teenage heroes, especially when Cates gives her heartbreaking speech about the horrible experience that made her hate Christmas. In fact, all the actors do a solid job -- the evil old landlady who serves as a sort of Wicked Witch of the West/Scrooge hybrid, the cranky old veteran, the crackpot inventor and the wise old Chinese guy. <br /> <br />But the showstopper is Gizmo -- tiny, round, fuzzy and wide-eyed, with a babyish squeaky voice and a liking for toy cars and 3-D glasses. Rarely has a puppet been so bloody cute and endearing. His complete opposite is Stripe, a gremlin amongst gremlins -- malevolent and gleefully sadistic, he seems smart enough to revel in the idea of destroying the town. <br /> <br />"Gremlins" is a brilliant horror/comedy that infuses a perfect American town with a little mayhem and gore, as well as some wickedly funny little nasties. His offspring are anything but cute and lovable. They are downright nasty, and scary at times. Because of that meanness, violence and some profanity, I do not recommend this movie to kids. The sequel I would recommend instead. Zach Galligan is the young man whose inventor father (Hoyt Axton) gives him an odd Christmas present: a tiny, furry creature that comes with a set of rules: don't get him wet, don't feed him after midnight, and keep him away from direct sunlight. But Galligan breaks the first rule and the damp little critter pops out a dozen little offspring. Maybe Not. This is actually more of an interesting movie than we would be inclined to give it credit for. It basically shows us the lives of different types of high school students. (Not to mention some teachers.) <br /> <br />Stacey and Linda are interesting. Stacey is the young naive girl ever ready to shed her virginity. She follows the advice of her friend Linda (who means well), but does not think as much as she should. Stacey ends up getting hurt, but she grows to the point where she sees that having love and friendship is much nicer than simple sex. <br /> <br />Linda is the more sexually experienced girl, but rather predictably, she gets hurt with her own fascination. <br /> <br />Mark and Damone are an interesting pair. Damone is the ever sexual predator. But he carries a charm despite his repulsive actions. And to some extent, he does realize that some of his actions were wrong. <br /> <br />Mark is the 'geek.' But we also come to realize that he is not only on the smarter side, but he is in fact a really nice person. Undoubtedly, under Linda's advice, Stacey gets upset when Mark isn't ready for sex. But the truth is that just because Mark wasn't ready for sex, that did NOT mean he didn't care about Stacey. And soon afterwards, Stacey gets HURT badly. (Going back to Mark, there is something really funny about how everyone tries to see his answers during the final exam.) <br /> <br />Charles Jefferson is the one weak link here. He is a stereotypical Jock, and he offers no real personality. The wreck of his car is an annoying intrusion, and it really doesn't fit. Unlike the other characters, he does no real growing. <br /> <br />Undoubtedly, the favorite pair in this movie is Sean Penn and Mr. Hand. While they have a bad teacher/student relationship, at times it looks like a father/son relationship. Mr. Hand is hard, but he is fair: "Get used to doing your own business on your own time. You wouldn't want me to come to your house some evening and discuss U.S. History would you?" As hard as Mr. Hand gets, he is right when he says: "This class is for your own benefit." The reconciliation of Mr. Hand and Sean Penn is drawn rather well. <br /> <br />Moving on, Stacey's brother Brad is worth mentioning as well. He is probably the closest to a 'normal kid.' He works hard in jobs he really doesn't like; but he knows he needs the money. In an especially sympathetic moment, he is brutally fired from his job for a DUMB reason. And he is especially helpful to Stacey when she has BIG problem. In many ways, it's so appropriate that Brad has his moment of glory in the last scene. <br /> <br />Another character worth mentioning is the eccentric Mr. Vargas. He appears to be a strange teacher, but he is really likable: "Look, I am a little slow today. I just switched to SANKA. So PLEASE, have a heart." There is something utterly comical about how the students are shocked when they see that Mr. Vargas's wife is especially beautiful. Like Mark, he is strange, but nice, as well as smart. <br /> <br />In all honesty, this is not just empty comedy. It shows us real students who have weaknesses and problems. But they are also likable and even Damone has some notable redeeming qualities. The teachers are not without likable qualities either. <br /> <br />This movie is worthy of at least a chance. McLaughlinNaperville, IL, USA12009-03-05 Great movie, even after its prime I recently saw this movie for the first time, and while it is slightly outdated, it was still very entertaining. There isn't really a main character, just a conglomeration of role players, and that helps the movie turn out well. Spicoli is hilarious as the high-guy at school who cares about nothing but warm weather, surfing, getting high, and saying "dude;" Judge Reinhold was in there as the normal guy who gets sick of the same old stuff, different day routine of his life; the girls in the movie are attractive, but without personality, as expected, the dorky guy who likes one of the attractive girls, plus the guy who is just a total a-hole, Dimone - they all blend in together very well for a fun, fast-paced movie. <br /> <br />I think everyone can identify, in at least some way, with one of the major characters, or even a minor one (in some respects, now again, I'm saying this in a relative comparison to the 80's) and this makes the movie somewhat real. <br /> <br />A good movie to watch with the guys, or just in a group environment. This film about teens despite its R rating has probably been seen by most teens of the time and although it shows that it's a "time capsule" of sorts for the 80s contains universal themes about teens that in many ways still remain relevant today which probably explains its continued popularity despite its age. What teenager anywhere in the world is not obsessed about sex, video/arcade games etc and has to deal with peer pressure issues? <br /> <br />I remember my first introduction to "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" came in the form of the soundtrack which my brother bought all those years ago. I remember I really liked the tracks which were mostly written by the individual members of one of my all-time favourite groups The Eagles or as in the case of Jackson Browne those who wrote songs for them. Not all the great tracks from the film are on the album though as strangely enough the Go-Gos and Tom Petty's tracks are not there which may be because of contractual reasons but it was still a good album for a soundtrack. <br /> <br />Sean Penn is very good as Spicoli but the rest of the cast also turn in very creditable performances as well and documents high school life in the U.S. in the 80s as well as "American Grafitti" does for the 50s. This dvd version though is not the optimal one that is out there and the picture and sound quality isn't that great.
