OlsonJohn du PreyBloomington, MN02009-06-17John du Prey - Classical ReviewRomantically speaking, the delicate crescendo of unfinished love dominates this powerful classic (easily one of the finest dramatic musicals ever produced). The unfolding of love, passion, and intimacy between Tony and Maria, like the riptide, spills into the soul of this film. Their whispered and orchestrated words on the balcony create nuances beyond the realm of normal drama. Their marriage before God establishes their union, solidifies the romantic crescendo, and allows Maria to mourn her husband's death at the end. It is a complete tragedy on all respective levels.

All meetings between Tony (played by Richard Beymer) and Maria (played by Natalie Wood) are stunning in presentation. The musical overtures are superb, the dancing is brilliant, and the conflict between the Jets and Sharks (women included) has its own originality in classical terms. Yet, Maria alone commands the stage in virtually all tender moments (except those involving Anita); our heroine's softness, intelligence, and untested wisdom establishes her emotive control of the play (start to finish). In as much as her humility does not detract from the other powerful performances, Maria displays honor, sacrifice, depth, and commitment throughout the entire drama. We observe Natalie Wood in her finest hour as a gifted actress.

The principles of romantic tragedy dominant this play in its careful adherence to the plot and character development within Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (who is Maria's unspoken mentor in matters of passion and control of one's lover). She redirects Tony away from secreted romance into the tragic consequences of interfering with the rumble; the deaths of Bernardo (her brother) and Riff (Tony's closest friend) are related (within dramatic irony) to her secret intervention (supposedly on their behalf). In truth, this masterpiece resides in both categories, tragedy and romance; bound (perhaps) by her mournful voice, "Don't you touch him!" Our catharsis is directly affected by Maria's youthful passion related to unfinished love in its most delicate stages. B0000AM6IY4002009-05-29Felt liked rated R. . . COOL!When my grandma and grampa came out to visit us (my family), daddy found West Side Story just coming on. So we sat to watch it.

It is kinda like modern (not-so modern now) Romeo and Juilet. Only, it includes graffiti, that short guy who wants to be with the good guys, and a few more.

I think I gave West Side Story a four because the use of teens smoking, the good guys leader telling his 'buddys' to bring guns, knives, swords, ect.. I also gave four stars 'cause the ending is kinda sad. My mom started crying and was really, really in your face, like, 'Ohhh, Tony died, shame on Chico.'

P.S. I was eight when I saw this. . . it really should have been rated R (mild violence, language) B0000AM6IY50A1IMJQNG8TNNTVA1IMJQNG8TNNTVPaula S. It deviated a bit from the original Broadway musical but the movie here still wack a wallop in terms of Jerome Robbins' groundbreaking choreograpny, Robert Wise's direction, and Leonard Bernstein's music. The movie is presented in widescreen of course, and as it should be, so the entire scope of the amazing and exhiliariting dance numbers can be seen as it was originally intended.

West Side Story traced the rivalry between two gangs, the native born Americans Jets and the Puerto Rican born Sharks. The Jets and Sharks turn out to be more alike than unlike and had the capacity to be friends, yet ethnic differences and the stubborness of both sides eventually leads to the deaths of both gangs' leaders and destroyed a relationship between the sister of the leader of the Sharks and an ex-Jets member which could have unite the two together.

The bonus second disc has a very informative and enlightening documentary on the making of the film, including clips featuring Natalie Wood and Russ Tamblyn's own vocals before they were dubbed in. In fact, Wood's vocals were not that bad, but her voice do quiver when she have to hit the high notes. Russ Tamblyn's original vocals for the Jet Song was also featured on the bonus disc, his voice was alright too, but has to be replaced by Tucker Smith due to contractural reasons.

The piece de resistance of the set is the booklet that came with it. The booklet first have a timeline that traced West Side Story's origins from Broadway smash to cinematic legend. Then the entire screenplay is included, with pictures from the movie inserted at key sequences in the script. The screenplay followed, for the most part, the original Broadway prodcution with the addition of the character Ice (Tucker Smith) and the elimination of Diesel. Ice would went on to assume Diesel's role and also many of Action's lines. After that is a reproduction of the original lobby brochure and finally, newspaper clippings reviewing the movie and of the premiere of the movie (get your magnifying glass out!)

Casting wise, the male Jets are more distinctive in terms of their individuality and characterizations. While their rivalry with the Sharks are based in no small part to racism, they are still likeable....until they assaulted Anita. With the exception of Anybodys, the Jet girls for the most part are undeveloped (pow, poo, ooblee-pooh). This trend is reversed in the Sharks, where the female characters turn out to be more interesting than the guys, with the exception of Bernardo. Despite incorporating the Shark guys in the song "America", most of them remain undistinctive.

While everyone seem to mention the usual suspects: Moreno, Wood, Beymer, Tamblyn, etc, etc, another cast member that also deserved to be mentioned is the late Tucker Smith, who played Ice, the second-in-command of the Jets. The last time I saw "West Side Story" in any form was when I was grade school, which was in the late 70s. Perhaps it is because of the widescreen, and that my sense of perception has matured, watching the movie I found myself constantly drawn to Tucker Smith. This often overlooked dancer/singer/actor, in my humble opinion, steals just about every scene he was in, especially the mambo dance sequence in the gymnasium, where he clearly was the best male dancer in the cast (he can clearly throw his legs much higher and arch his back more than even the "epitome of masculine grace" George Chakiris). He exuded charisma and star quality and certainly danced and looked better than any of the male leads. For whatever reason his career seem to have stalled in Hollywood. Although there were some rumours on why he didn't go on to bigger things but that is a matter to be discussed someplace else.
DescriptionThis brilliant (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ( Maria, America, 'somewhere, 'tonight ) with Robbins own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating work of art (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangsthe Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (RichardBeymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale.Amazon.com essential videoThe winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score. --Tom Keogh 630522577XMy Fair LadyB000KX0IQSFiddler on the Roof (2-Disc Collector's Edition)B000AP04OMThe Sound of Music (Two-Disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition)B00000F14BThe Music Man (Special Edition)B000HT3PGAThe King and I (50th Anniversary Edition)163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722752011General AAS740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video572062Coming of Age163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524760Classics163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video577344Drama163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video577346Romance163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722786011General AAS163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722783011General AAS508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video412986Beymer, Richard411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417174Chakiris, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438074Moreno, Rita434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439614Oakland, Simon439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448898Tamblyn, Russ448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453158Wood, Natalie451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video463570Wise, Robert463154( W )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video369278011Modern Adaptations369276011More to Explore369257011Shakespeare on DVD Store251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579556( W )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620880111960 - Sounds like a formula for a masterpiece, right? Think again. The Lerner and Lowe score has only two memorable songs - "Heather on the hill" and the misplaced "Almost like being in love" (misplaced because it seems to have been shoved into this film and doesn't fit the rest of the score either musically or thematically). Gene Kelly's choreography is uninspired here. Some of his dance routines in this film are stolen - move for move - from previous films. Worse, they aren't very good. Cyd Charisse has little to do here except look pretty. Vincent Minelli directs poorly. The film looks stagy. Moving track shots are badly done. We can actually see the film shudder a bit before the camera begins to move. The big crowd dance scenes are awful. This is a third rate MGM musical. B0007939NO31A37S3ACL57LN62A37S3ACL57LN62Samantha KelleyMaliejandraUSA12009-02-25A DisappointmentA town called Brigadoon appears in a remote area in Scottland once every one hundred years. A resident prayed for a miracle, to isolate his beloved hometown from the evils of the world, so they appear and disappear without becoming affected by the outside world. The consequence is that no one can leave its gates. When two travelers (Gene Kelly, Van Johnson) stumble upon the town, they are baffled by its quaintness, but one soon falls in love with a local girl (Cyd Charisse). Can he decide between his modern life in New York and the love of his life?

A cool idea is ruined by bad direction. Vincente Minnelli uses hardly any close-ups to illustrate that his two main characters are falling in love; they're both beautiful so why not show their faces? The long shots display the large crowds well, but it seems stagy and far from intimate. It would be understandable if the scenery was beautiful, but the painted backdrops are painfully obvious. What separates the film from the stage show? Not much. A few songs are cut because they were considered to be too risque at the time, although some of Johnson's sharper lines were retained. ("Oh we have [witches]. We pronounce it differently.")

The only two memorable songs are "Go Home to Bonnie Jean" and "Almost Like Falling in Love." However, the stagings aren't all that impressive. "Bonnie Jean" does have an interesting dance break with Kelly and Johnson together. They're polar opposites; Kelly is graceful and compact while Johnson is clunky and showy. They work well off of each other and provide the best of both worlds. Product DescriptionMovie DVDAmazon.com essential videoAnything is possible in Brigadoon, the Lerner and Loewe musical put to celluloid in 1954 by director Vincente Minnelli: a village can reappear for only one day each century, and Gene Kelly can tap-dance on a dirt path. Kelly and Van Johnson play a pair of New Yorkers who go on a hunting vacation in the highlands of Scotland. But what Tommy Albright (Kelly) captures is the heart of a bonny Scottish lass, Fiona Campbell (Cyd Charisse). The catch: Fiona lives in Brigadoon, an enchanted town that appears for only one day every 100 years. If Tommy stays, he must give up everything (including his fiancé back home); if Fiona leaves with Tommy, Brigadoon will vanish into the highland mist, never to be seen again. Not that this keeps anyone from having a good time. The men are clad in vivid tartan kilts and leggings, and the women swish about in multicolored petticoats. Fiona's sister Jean is getting married, and the whole town is drinking ale and singing cheery songs--except for Jean's ex-beau, who threatens to leave and thereby end the town's existence. Brigadoon is a charming escape into a sweet fairy tale. Some of the songs may be less than memorable, but Kelly's choreography is often as witty as the banter. When the hectic pace of the modern world threatens to overtake you, consider a brief vacation in the highlands of Scotland. As one character says, "There must be an awful lot of folk searching for a Brigadoon"--even if it only lasts for a couple of hours. --Larisa Lomacky Moore B00004RF9DSeven Brides for Seven BrothersB00000F14BThe Music Man (Special Edition)B00004RF9KShow Boat6304712944Camelot (Special Edition)630522577XMy Fair Lady524760Classics163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video577344Drama163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video577346Romance163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722786011General AAS163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722783011General AAS508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video413280Blake, Madge O411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417174Chakiris, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417386Charisse, Cyd416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430090Johnson, Van429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430144Jones, Barry429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431034Kelly, Gene430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433120Leeds, Peter432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440314Owen, Tudor439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442520Quillan, Eddie442450( Q )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video446188Sharpe, Albert444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448102Stewart, Elaine444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452384Whitman, Stuart451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video460020Minnelli, Vincente459370( M )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600330All Titles515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600324Musicals & Performing Arts515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3151171$9.99 & Under1061354The Big DVD Sale251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579514( B )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1240754011Romance163375Romantic Comedies163394Romantic Drama251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video672579011The Kids and Family Mega Sale: DVDs, Toys, and Customized Music44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - OlsonJohn du PreyBloomington, MN02009-06-17John du Prey - Classical ReviewRomantically speaking, the delicate crescendo of unfinished love dominates this powerful classic (easily one of the finest dramatic musicals ever produced).

B00008972S4002009-05-29Felt liked rated R. .

P.S. I was eight when I saw this. . . it really should have been rated R (mild violence, language) B00008972S50A1IMJQNG8TNNTVA1IMJQNG8TNNTVPaula S.

Like of both How the West Was Won (Ultimate Collector's Edition) and The Searchers (Ultimate Collector's Edition) which were over padded and miscolor films. This film box set isnt that at all.
The normal DVD is in full screen. This collection is in wide screen format and a great digital transfer. The soundtrack is tweaked upward in sound quality.

This multi Oscar winning, musicial adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is a winner. You will see more and more details with every airing of this modern day classic

What amazes me is this film from the early 1960's is still timeless. The second disk has trailers and documentaries on this film.

What also comes in this collection is a film book that reprint the film book that you bought at the theater in the 1960's with a press book that newspaper would have and a history of the film. This book alone is worth the price of this collection for any film fan
TennysonLady TamilynnOklahoma, USA02009-03-29Jane Russell -- "Half Sweet, Half Acid"Jane Russell is the true star of this film; make no mistake. The billing stated that she was The Star of the film, and the billing was correct. If you normally bypass Marilyn movies because of the rather overdone dumb blonde motif, watch this one anyways. Jane sparkles as the smart, witty best friend to Lorelei -- the diamond loving, dumb blonde. Jane's sparkling repartee as well as her performance capabilities (and my dad says her beauty) make her the most fun to watch. She is what is known in theater circles as a triple threat; she can act, sing, and dance. Oh, don't get me wrong; Marilyn does a very good job at what she does, and her attitude and performance are fun to watch. I love how her character, Lorelei, is always trying to find Jane's character, Dorothy, a wealthier and more "suitable escort" despite the fact that Dorothy has told her she doesn't care about money. However, it is her performance of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" that is her dazzling moment, but Jane dazzles throughout the movie! This one is a wonderful, rewatchable film, but I don't just watch it for the dubious pleasure of Marilyn in another typecast roll.B000FG65RQ50A39YLMCOWLTU7IA39YLMCOWLTU7IA ViewerElgin, IL02009-02-25EXCUSE ME, IS THIS THE WAY TO EUROPE, FRANCE?My wife is a huge Marilyn Monroe fan, and this is her favorite movie of all time. I've seen it three times in the last month since we got the DVD, and I'm surprised to say I really like it. I'm not big on musical comedies, but this one works. It's pretty risque for 1953, and the musical numbers are great. "Ain't There Anyone Here For Love?" Jane Russell's big number, is gayer than a Christmas tree, and "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" is one of Marilyn's finest moments. She's absolutely radiant throughout this movie, and very funny too. Her talents were overshadowed by her looks, and this is her best performance in my opinion. The film print has been restored, and looks great, I love Technicolor movies from this period. You can't go wrong with this one.B000FG65RQ41A3KEZLJ59C1JVHA3KEZLJ59C1JVHMelissa NiksicChicago, IL United States12009-01-29A classic movie musicalIn this classic movie musical, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell star as two entertainers and best girlfriends who embark on a ship to Paris in search of the perfect men. Lorelei (Monroe) is a gold digger intent on snagging a better catch at sea, even though her new fiance is waiting for her back home. Unfortunately, Lorelei's future father-in-law hires a private investigator to keep track of all her hijinks, and Dorothy (Russell) ends up falling for the P.I. This is a funny movie with some good musical numbers, including Monroe's iconic "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" routine. Monroe and Russell both deliver solid performances, but for some reason I just never connected to this movie the way I did with "Singin' in the Rain," "The Sound of Music," and other old Hollywood musicals. Still, it's definitely a must-see classic.B000FG65RQ41A312AT0V3YUEL1A312AT0V3YUEL1TXBulldogDallas,TX12009-01-21One of Monroes bestDuring her time Marilyn Monroe was written off by many in Hollywood as all sex and no talent. This film IMO proves them wrong. Her natural flair for comedy added with her sex appeal makes her a treasure. Monroe herself has said that one must be smart to be able to play dumb. I truly think she was vastly underrated as an actress..Later, Some Like It Hot would showcase all her gifts to perfection. Thats not to say that she isn't scrumptious to look at in this film and in technicolor to boot! Jane Russell(The brunette equivilant of sexiness) makes a perfect co-star for Marilyn. Jane seems to be the older sister/parent to Marilyns' naive child. Its a shame they were not paired again. Their onscreen chemistry makes them a fine pair to behold. The film also has Marilyn in her classic Diamonds are a girls Best friend number which IMO is one of cinemas best. Jane also gets a crack at the song in a blonde wig doing a very funny Marilyn impersonation in a court room scene. This is one of those gems you never get tired of and can watch again and again.DescriptionThese glamorous showgirls have everything a girl could want - except engagement rings! In a quest for true love, Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) and her gold digger pal Dorothy (Jane Russell) set sail on a luxury-liner bound for France. But the pair hits rocky waters when a manipulative detective, an over-aged, over sexed millionaire (Charles Coburn) and the entire men's Olympic team try to put an anchor in their marriage-minded mischief. It's a wild and joyously funny ride across the Atlantic as our bathing beauties plan and plot a way to land their men.Amazon.com essential videoAnita Loos's old story from the 1920s about a pair of single women in search of husbands gets a makeover in Howard Hawks's 1953 musical, starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe as friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit, and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. The film may largely be a fluff project best remembered as a showcase for its leading actresses, but then Monroe and Russell rarely got such extended opportunities to prove that they were more than cinematic icons. --Tom Keogh B000059GEHHow To Marry A MillionaireB00005A06NSome Like It HotB000JF5TXOThe Seven Year ItchB000059GEIThere's No Business Like Show BusinessB000059GEJBus Stop163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722746011General AAS163378Parody & Spoof163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722747011General AAS163375Romantic Comedies163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163376Satire163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722753011General AAS163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video300399Drama163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video524760Classics163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video577342Comedy163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video577344Drama163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722786011General AAS163428Musicals508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722783011General AAS508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video417174Chakiris, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418084Coburn, Charles416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419614Dalio, Marcel419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424764Geray, Steven424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428350Holmes, Taylor426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437800Monroe, Marilyn434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443138Reid, Elliott442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444700Russell, Jane442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450648Varden, Norma450514( V )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video457678Hawks, Howard403504( H )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908716All Fox Titles90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908722Comedy90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908734General908732Musicals90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579524( G )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - In this season, the mystery of J.R.'s shooting is solved, Lucy gets married, Ray is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Jock (and, as such, a Ewing), Ray also gets married, and J.R. runs a counterrevolution, among other things. It all builds up to a head when Cliff finds a dead body in the Southfork pool, and accuses J.R. of the crime (a reasonable accusation, given J.R.'s character)-- but who is the dead person that Cliff finds? Fans will have to get the #5 release to find that out.

As for the technical aspects, the video is generally the same quality as it was in #3-- very good, but with quite a few dust specks and bits of dirt, especially in the opening titles of each episode. The audio carries the stories across extremely well, just like it did in #3.

As for packaging, the box is slimmed down even more from the #3 release, given the fact that the season didn't start until Nov. 1980. There are 4 double-sided discs containing the 23 episodes from Nov. 1980 to May 1981. The episode listings are on two of the inside flaps, but because of the slimmed-down box, there are no plot listings. All that is included is the episode titles, writer and director credits, and airdates. There are 3 outings on each side of each disc, except for disc 4-- on that one, there are 3 outings on the front, but only 2 on the back, not only because these were the last outings of the season, but also to make room for the bonus feature. The discs are packaged on top of each other in two trays. The package is in a purplish color scheme.

As for bonuses, there are no commentaries, but to make up for that absence, what is included is the `04 CBS "Dallas" reunion special called "The Return to Southfork." Here, seven of the major cast members (led by, first and foremost, Larry Hagman as J.R.) and one minor member (Mary Crosby, as "Kristin") reminisce on the phenomenon that was "Dallas." Among the highlights were the results of an online poll asking the question to viewers of their opinions of the best cliffhangers of the series' long run (before each of several commercial breaks, seven of the results would be revealed, each by one of the seven major cast members, and at the end, the final three would be revealed), plus home movies, bloopers, and a fan Q&A segment with all eight of the cast members at the Oil Baron's Ballroom. This special was 2 hrs. in original broadcast, but has been edited down to 87 min. for DVD release. The opening titles of the special paid homage to the classic opening titles of the series itself-- a shot of the skyline, alternating rural and urban views, and cast introductions. The cast introductions for this special (which paid homage to the three-way split-screens) involved present-day shots of the major cast members, flanked on each side by classic shots from the series.

As for languages and subtitles, those options are just like those of #3, with English audio, and English, French, and Spanish subtitles (no subtitles on the Reunion special, though).

Overall, this, like #3, is a well-made release of the fourth season's worth (actually, the third full season's worth) of CBS' classic prime serial, and like #3, comes highly recommended for content and presentation.
Wow, so much happens in season 4:

The "Who shot JR" mystery unwinds; Kristen is sent packing; Bobby wheels-and-deals as president of Ewing Oil; Lucy gets married; Ray learns he's a Ewing; Ray gets married; the Takapa deal; Jock & Miss Ellie almost divorce; Dusty Farlow returns; we are introduced to Mitch and Afton Cooper, Punk Anderson, Leslie Stewart, Jeremy Wendell, Rebecca Wentworth, and Clayton Farlow; Jordan Lee becomes more prominent; the ladies' affairs with Alex Ward and Clint Ogden; the Asian government overthrow; Bobby becomes a senator; and on and on!

More plot twists and turns than any of the previous seasons, as I recall.Product DescriptionMovie DVDAmazon.comFollowing a tumultuous third season that culminated in the shooting of likeable villain J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman) by an unknown assailant, Dallas: The Complete Fourth Season is relatively tame by comparison. Still, it begins with no fewer than four episodes stretching out the mystery of who (from a wide field of candidates) actually shot J.R., with the victim's alcoholic wife, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray), looking like the chief suspect. Meanwhile, with J.R. out of commission and possibly paralyzed by a bullet pressing against his spine, brother Bobby (Patrick Duffy) reluctantly takes the reins of Ewing Oil at the insistence of his father, Jock (Jim Davis). Prepared to buy a refinery at a bargain price—something Jock always wanted but J.R. could never deliver—Bobby is set to take Ewing Oil to a new level of success, but finds his authority undercut by J.R., who is pulling strings from his hospital bed.
Another suspect in the shooting, Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), brother of Bobby's wife, Pam (Victoria Principal), tries to jumpstart his return to Texas politics by making trouble for the Ewings in the Texas legislature. Bobby himself, burned out on the family business, tries his own hand at the state senate, a useful place to be once Jock and Ewing matriarch Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes), mired in a personal conflict that heads toward divorce, find themselves on opposite sides in a land dispute. Other story threads include a rocky marriage between granddaughter Lucy (Charlene Tilton) and a medical student (Leigh McCloskey), and extramarital distraction for lonely Pam and Sue Ellen. Perhaps the biggest scandal of the season is J.R.'s manipulation of a counterrevolution in the Southeast Asian country where Ewing Oil fields were disastrously nationalized--a crime that could come back to haunt him. --Tom KeoghB0009IW894Dallas - We have bought all 7 seasons that are out up to now 10-30-07 and look forward to the other 6 seasons coming out. Much better then todays tv shows. We watch 2 epsiodes every night. We love this show. This was a great show at it's best. For you younger people that never seen this show back in the late 70's & the 80's, it is worth the money to buy all 13 seasons. There are only 7 seasons up to now 10-30-07 but I am sure WB will release the others one at a time. I Hope. Such good actors that this show offers. To watch it on DVD without commericals is so great. You can't go wrong with this show. It keeps your interest from start to finish, We always look forward to the evenings so we can set down and watch this show to see what JR Ewing is up to this time. Thank you for reading my review.

Ciepielaoldmovielover32007-10-15the BEST season after season 1( but before S.5)First of all, all us true dallas fans know this season as season 4.Warners just counts the 5 part mini-series as the first full"season". Thus, this would make the maroon boxset with Lucy,J.R, and SueEllen really season 4 , and not season 5. I disagree with the fans whom say this season is not as good. For me, the green and purple seasons were VERY boring, and my least favorite.its so boring and SueEllen and J.R are getting along, and for the most part, in both those seasons, they are. I dont like Kristen, i think she is a bad actress, and Pams fro in the purple season was repulsive, and so was the troll they stuck her with. And it was totally out of character for everyone to be so concerned that J.R. was shot....cheesy..... in the THIS season, the best season since the miniseries and season 1(the blue boxset),SueEllen takes JohnRoss and flees to Southern Cross Ranch,Pam's acting gets better and she has compelling storylines,Miss Ellie as mentioned before has to deal w Jocks death, we meet Crazy Katherine,J.R. is as nasty as ever,Mis Ellie goes off on J.R,Sue Ellen and J.r divorce, and if I am right, this is one of the few seasons where she is SOBER throughout.Cliff gets set up by J.R and has another affair w SueEllen, and if you thought it was good in season 1, you aint seen nothin yet! five stars! I promise if u get this season, you too will mark it as one of your favorites.B000FI9OD650A24E9XOBN37MPEA24E9XOBN37MPECheryle A.
I was very pleased with the service and speed in which I received this product. It arrived just a few days after I ordered it. Thank YouProduct DescriptionMovie DVDAmazon.comBlink while watching Dallas: The Complete Fifth Season, and one might miss some of the fastest moving nastiness ever seen on the granddaddy of primetime soaps. Hovering over everything is the tragic loss of grizzled patriarch Jock Ewing (Jim Davis, who died prior to season 5), off on business in South America but dead before he returns to Southfork Ranch and the arms of Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes). While the widow grieves for her loss, charming scoundrel J.R. (Larry Hagman) finds new lows to reach as he conspires to woo estranged wife Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) back to Southfork and blackmail younger brother Bobby (Patrick Duffy) into abandoning his shares in Ewing Oil, thus giving J.R. control. Even J.R.'s schemes mask deeper ploys: getting back Sue Ellen means getting back their toddler son, John Ross, which means adding John Ross's ten shares to J.R.'s arsenal. Sheesh.
There's also more collateral damage than ever from J.R.'s machinations, notably the complete destruction of chronic loser Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), whose romantic overtures toward Sue Ellen stand in J.R.'s way. Not only does poor Cliff lose Sue Ellen's affections, he falls hook, line, and sinker for a fake deal dangled by a J.R. confederate, costing him the respect and support of his family and threatening his health. But there's also the infant son of Sue Ellen's late sister to think about: Bobby and baby-starved Pam (Victoria Principal) want to adopt him, but J.R. claims to be the father and threatens to take the boy away. (How do most of these people manage to live under the same Southfork roof?) Meanwhile, young Lucy (Charlene Tilton) deals with divorce and the emotional aftermath of being held hostage, and Jock's son Ray (Steve Kanaly) threatens his marital stability with impulsive investments in real estate. Everything comes to a head with a new eruption in the old Ewing-Barnes family feud, and an internal fight for control of the Ewing empire. Down and dirty, and completely irresistible. A nice special feature provides a tour of the real-life Southfork ranch. --Tom KeoghB000JLTRFEDallas - The Complete Sixth SeasonB000BVM1TGDallas - The Complete Fourth SeasonB000PAAK0ADallas - The Complete Seventh SeasonB0009IW894Dallas - There is still so much we don't know or understand about pre-Columbian cultures. Theories on the fall of the Mayan civilization is still that - theories. It could be very possible that the two cultures could have met. Time just has a way of wiping away any evidence of it whether it be natural or man-made.
Its a very entertaining movie of a very interesting concept. Yul Brynner simply steals the show. The anamorphic widescreen transfer is excellent. Recommended!B0010YSDA450A3VEOD90YR93R7A3VEOD90YR93R7S. B. ClaytonRomanticRiverside County, Ca. USA02009-04-16The StrutI love Yul Brynner's strut. I saw this movie while waiting for a plane when I was going home for vacation from college. What a hoot! Richard Basehart's headdress is right from the codices but on him it is so funny. George is not really ok, but if you really LIKE the late 'KING,' I recommend the movie. He was good! And, oh my god, the body.B0010YSDA440A1IVGC4C3ALX3JA1IVGC4C3ALX3JPaul T.
Would recommend viewing as although made many years ago, the acting is quite good. This movie would be a winner at the box office if it was remade with todays special effects. Great movie intend to watch it many more times in the future. B0010YSDA430A10VCNH9CMDERZA10VCNH9CMDERZMarkku OjanenLempäälä Finland12009-03-04Is hokum the right word for it?This is silly film, a real curiosity. If you do not care reality at all, then it is fun to watch. There is a lot of posturing where Brynner is at best. He looks charismatic even in this kind of pictures. Often the main characters speak like modern people. There are a lot of sermons about gods and how one should live. Everybody speaks good English and they understand easily each others. One has to wait perhaps too long for the final battle which is O.K. and there is not much blood, which is good for my taste. Only rarely I have seen so many real people as in this film. This is he major asset of this film. I do not know if Brynner is a great actor but he has always a wonderful presence. George Chakiris is a bit weak hero for my taste. Hang your brains and enjoy this hokum!B0010YSDA440ARKZA0576B5WBARKZA0576B5WBGeorge FernandezThe EntertaineeWarwick, New York United States02009-02-27A little suspense goes a long way..Its not the best, but if you're a Yul Brynner fan, you'll love it. He struts across the screen like a cat and even climbs a tree...quickly and nimbly. The movie requires a little more suspension of belief to enjoy but its fun.Product DescriptionStudio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 09/23/2008 Run time: 108 minutes Rating: Pg13Amazon.comFans of Mel Gibson's Apocalypto may well enjoy J. Lee Thompson's 1963 Kings of the Sun, an exotic, widescreen adventure about the ancient Mayan civilization and its rocky relationship with a nomadic tribe. George Chakiris plays Balam, a young and inexperienced Mayan king who must lead his people from one part of Mexico to another via ships. Arriving at a seemingly uninhabited coast, Balam oversees the construction of a new kingdom, complete with a tall temple upon which an altar for human sacrifice rests. The problem for Balam is that he doesn't believe in the need for sacrificing people, creating a conflict when his own high priest (Richard Basehart) demands that Black Eagle (Yul Brynner), wounded chief of a local Indian tribe, be offered up to the Mayan gods. Complicating Balam's life even more is that his love interest, Ixchel (Shirley Anne Field), falls for Black Eagle while nursing him back to health. Everything leads to a kind of social experiment in coexistence that gets shaky whenever the subject of Ixchel comes up. Screenwriter Elliott Arnold (Broken Arrow) does a fine job of alternating the big picture of conflicting traditions and peoples with intimate moments of passion and disappointment. Thompson wraps the story in a fever-dream intensity, underscored by the undeniable sexuality of Brynner (who moves like a bronze cat) and Chakiris (who looks like a haughty demigod). The characters' lurches toward a more modern view of sacrifice and cooperation are fascinating and make Kings of the Sun as thoughtful as it is bigger-than-life. --Tom KeoghB0010YSDAOTaras BulbaB000WMFZMYEl Cid (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (The Miriam Collection)B00125WAXMThe Fall Of The Roman Empire (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (The Miriam Collection)B0010YSDAESolomon & ShebaB00005JN8ZQuo Vadis (Two-Disc Special Edition)163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290940Classics163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163350General163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video412102Basehart, Richard411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video414886Brynner, Yul411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417174Chakiris, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420610Dexter, Brad419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425442Gordon, Leo424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438300Morse, Barry434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442666Rainey, Ford442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450856Vetri, Victoria450514( V )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620880111960 - 1969562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2RIMOKVRRSB6FYul BrynnerB00008PC0Xhttp://www.amazon.com/633-Squadron-Cliff-Robertson/dp/B00008PC0X%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00008PC0X7602http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J9VG5GE8L._SL75_.jpg7552http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J9VG5GE8L._SL160_.jpg160111http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J9VG5GE8L.jpg475331http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J9VG5GE8L._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J9VG5GE8L._SL75_.jpg7552http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J9VG5GE8L._SL160_.jpg160111http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J9VG5GE8L.jpg475331Cliff RobertsonGeorge ChakirisMaria PerschyHarry AndrewsDonald Houston1.85:1NR (Not Rated)DVDTWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTEdward ScaifeBert BatesCecil F.

At the time this film was made, the Mosquitoe fighter bombers had to be the few remaining serviceable planes in the world, and those Merlin engines are just fantastic. Sure the acting is marginal, there are model planes too, but this is a fun movie to watch, and I recommend it for those history buffs out there that like WW II aircraft.
Yet another post-WWII British War Film (they sure did churn 'em out), 633 Squadron is actually a pretty good film; it generates enough excitement through its suprisingly-bleak finale to elevate it above the mundane.B00008PC0X30A38JX40LWRJZJ1A38JX40LWRJZJ1Gregory LumGreg LumOakland, CA USA02008-08-07Mosquitoes, mosquitoesMy reason for obtaining this movie was to see the Mosquito fighter-bomber in action. The flying footage was spectacular until you get to the bombing sequence. Unfortunately, special effects of the Sixties were no where near what it is today in 2008. The bombers were obviously models that were destroyed by set explosive charges. When they were able to deliver the bombs, they always hit the same location. They saved money by using the same sequence. Some would criticize the overuse of today's computer special effects, but it would have helped this movie a lot. Unfortunately, it wouldn't help the storyline and the acting was half-hearted. The flying Mosquitoes are the only high point.DescriptionBased on true events, this "exciting, engrossing [and] breathtaking" (The Hollywood Reporter) action-adventure stars OscarÂ(r) winners* Cliff Robertson and George Chakiris as two WWII fliers pitted against the Nazis in a do-or-die mission. Filled with "blazing, pulse-pounding and realistic air-fighting footage" (Boxoffice), 633 Squadron will "put your heart in your throat" (Los Angeles Times)! 1944. Allied forces learn that the Nazis are planning to pummel England with an all-out rocket blitz. SmithMiami Beach, FL02009-06-30Feel-good film for the FrenchAt almost three hours, this is too long by half. Padded with many battles scenes interspersed with actual WW2 footage, the movie tells the tale of French resistance in Paris in the last days of WW2 when the Nazis almost destroyed the city out of spite. It's a miracle they didn't. The Gore Vidal script is above average, but some of the acting, especially by the Americans like Kirk Douglas is a bit lame. Orson Wells comes off OK as the Swiss ambassador who tries to talk sense into the Nazi general in charge of Paris. This actually includes a 5 minute intermission. They don't do those anymore.B00008Z44M30A2PWMLTJ8L3IYDA2PWMLTJ8L3IYDFred NietzscheSan Francisco02009-06-27WWII and Paris buffs will enjoy thisWhen I read about this DVD my first thought was "why haven't I already seen this?" I'm a big WWII buff and on paper this movie sounds amazing. Orson Wells, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Kirk Douglas, and many other big name stars plus a script by Gore Vidal and Francess Ford Copola. If only they could have got Copola to direct. I suspect that unlike the actual director he would have had the french speaking french, the english english, and the germans german. Instead the movie was directed with dubbing in mind so no matter how you manipulate the language options you can never hear the germans speaking german (from what I can tell I think they are actually speaking french most of the time). I toggled back and forth between French with English subtitles (most of the movie) and English (scenes with Wells, Douglas, Stack, Glen Ford, and Tony Perkins) using the "Setup" option on the DVD.

Another problem is this movie is just too long. Especially at the beginning there are too many scenes of people going back and forth between different french organizations and talking and also some melodramatic scenes of Nazis acting like the cliche Nazis in an American B movie.

However, once the movie gets going its actually quite compelling. The story is the very interesting true story of how Paris was liberated. Hitler wanted to see Paris completely obliterated before the Nazis left. The allies on the other hand are torn between several different factions of the french resistance and General Patton who despite his love of French culture was more interested in getting to Berlin ASAP and for him that meant bypassing Paris. I saw that one reviewer said that the Nazis never really had the capability to completely destroy Paris. I suppose that depends on what you mean by destroy but there was a similar situation on the Eastern front where insurgents rose up against the Nazis as the Russians were advancing and parts of Warsaw were completely obliterated and thousands of people were masacred. The same could easily have happened but didn't thanks to the perseverence of the French resistance and the fact that the commanding general of the Germans behaved like a human not a war criminal.

What I loved about this movie were the shots of battles and troops liberating Paris. People who are familiar with WWII history will appreciate the battle scenes which for a change are quite realistic (minor exception, the insurgents deal with German tanks far too easily). The Americans actually have Sherman tanks and the Germans Panzers, unlike some movies such as Patton where they took 50's era war surplus tanks and passed them off. And the liberation scenes, the cooperation of the Americans and French were quite moving to me. I think this movie would make a nice companion to Casablanca.

While the film's visual transfer to DVD is fine, even excellent, the audio and subtitles are horrible.

This is one of those unusual films which includes dialogue in both English and French. One wants, for example, to hear Glenn Ford speaking English. But the DVD offers *only* all English or all French, in other words, no original soundtrack.

Compounding the problem, the English subtitles were evidently written by someone who isn't a native speaker of either English or French, and who may not have even been watching the movie. Every other sentence is mistranslated. Times are altered. Names are altered. Odd sentences are added that aren't in the dialogue. It's just bizarre -- I've never seen anything like it.

So four and a half stars for the movie, but only two stars for the DVD transfer.B00008Z44M30A3LGSAZYF3PZ0AA3LGSAZYF3PZ0AGary B. BowersSondraECCA12008-08-28Did it really happen??Remember this movie from years ago(60) Still worth seeing Paris as it was in 1944. Should serve as a reminder that these things are still going on today. B00008Z44M43A2TXR85WQLE32NA2TXR85WQLE32ND. S. ThurlowAlaska32008-03-03The Liberation of Paris...1966's "Is Paris Burning?" was one of several ensemble 1960's movie epics commemorating the Allied victory in World War II. It was based on the historical account by Larry Collins and Dominique LaPierre of the liberation of Paris from Nazi occupation in 1944.

This is a French production and its cast and point of view are largely French. At the start of the film, Hitler appoints a new German commander in Paris (Gert Frobe, Goldfinger from the James Bond movie) who is directed to burn the city if Allied liberation is likely. The French resistance, with the Allies ashore in Normandy, debate among its factions about when to rise up and seize the City. In the event, several factions start on their own; the result is fighting over control of the public buildings in the center of Paris. The Swedish diplomatic representative (Orson Welles in an extended cameo) arranges a temporary ceasefire while the resistance seeks an assurance of Allied military help.

The Allies had planned to bypass Paris in pursuit of retreating German Armies, but the uprising forces their hand. General Omar Bradley (Glenn Ford in a cameo) releases the French 2nd Armored Division and U.S. 4th Infantry Division to go to Paris. The stage is set for a race to the finish, as the Germans methodically lay demolitions charges around Paris while trying to hold off the resistance and the Allies.

The cinematography is crisp black and white, intercut with actual combat footage from the war. The movie is a virtual tour of Paris. The cast must have included every prominent French actor of the time, whose lines are (mostly) seamlessly dubbed into English. The joyous hysteria that accompanied the liberation is nicely captured, with scenes of French soldiers slipping off tanks to call ahead to parents they have not seen since 1940. Maurice Jarre's distinctive musical score helps carry the storyline.

This movie has rather been forgotten over the years. It certainly deserves another look; this movie is highly recommended to fans of the World War II genre.Product DescriptionAs the nazi jackboot marches through europe the freedom fighters of paris mount a brave resistance. I would recommed it.B0002ERWZ050A15OQELT6NLTAVA15OQELT6NLTAVMTSNew Jersey02007-08-12The Country girlThis is one of Bing's best movies. If you're expecting the happy go lucky Bing musical this is not it but shows Bing can really act.B0002ERWZ032A1F7TV818H3K28A1F7TV818H3K28SuefilmgirlUSA32007-04-08Country GirlThis was not an exceptional acting performance on Grace Kelly's part, but Bing Crosby did wonderfully. The film was slightly depressing, and the plot moved slowly. Overall, a decent film, but one only to be watched once--not a fun "watch ten times" film.DescriptionIn THE COUNTRY GIRL, Frank Elgin (Crosby) is a washed up actor given the chance of a lifetime to stage a comeback when director Bernie Dobb, played by William Holden, offers him the lead in a new musical. Suffering from extreme insecurity, Frank turns to his wife Georgie (Kelly) to make decisions for him, and she teams up with Bernie to boost Frank’s self-esteem despite the fact that she has grown sick of dealing with her husband’s problems.Amazon.com essential videoIn retrospect, George Seaton's adaptation of The Country Girl seems like the movie that was made to prove that both Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly could act. The tale of an alcoholic actor and singer (Crosby) and his long-suffering wife (Kelly) whose marriage is put to the test when he gets a second chance at stardom, Clifford Odets' drama is chock full of twists and turns designed to give actors a grueling workout, with its hidden secrets, tortured love story, and frank depiction of the horrors of alcohol abuse. Crosby and Kelly sank their teeth into the meaty roles with gusto (it helped that a rock-solid William Holden was there for each to spark off of), and both were showered with accolades that remained high points of their careers. Crosby was lauded with kudos for turning his charming persona inside-out, but it was Kelly who stole the show, possibly because at the time she was one of the hardest working women in show business. In 1954, the actress appeared in four films, including the Alfred Hitchcock classics Dial M for Murder and Rear Window, and finally ascended to leading-lady status after her stellar supporting turns in High Noon and Mogambo. In typical Hollywood fashion, though, it was only when Kelly shrouded her breathtaking beauty in plain clothes and a dowdy hairdo that she was taken seriously and awarded a Best Actress Oscar--one of the most highly contested ever, as she beat out comeback star Judy Garland's ferocious performance in A Star Is Born. --Mark EnglehartB001PKHS68To Catch a Thief - The Centennial Collection (1955) (2pc)B0002HOEQ2Dial M for MurderB00005ASGAThe Bridges at Toko-RiB0015FGCI8High SocietyB00008AOWOHigh Society163350General163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740106Addiction & Alcoholism291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291298Melodrama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740126Psychological Drama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video745716Crumbling Marriages163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video572116Marriage163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081770114-for-3 Drama1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417174Chakiris, George416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419194Crosby, Bing416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422666Farnum, Franklyn422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426660Hamilton, Chuck426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428266Holden, William426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431036Kelly, Grace430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431204Kent, Robert430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442340Provost, Jon440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443330Reynolds, Gene442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444330Ross, Anthony442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video461922Seaton, George403580( S )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234081All Paramount3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234111Classics3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234131Drama3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - 1959562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video1253966011Best Actress1253959011Academy Awards1253957011Award Winners386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1H2YKLCZVYUJ6Best Actress Oscar Winners!
