If you like sad movies, this is your best bet.B0002KPHZ630A39CX0EE4BZCZCA39CX0EE4BZCZCCraig ConnellLockport, NY USA02009-04-24A Long, Emotional ExperienceThe cast is tremendous in here; lots of big names. That's the good news, at least for most male viewers, because the bad news- again, for us males - is that this is a woman's movie from start-to-finish. For you ladies, this movie is gold!

From the moment Claudette Colbert comes home after seeing her husband off for war, the tears start and the women's soap opera begins. It goes on and on, too, because this film is almost three hours long. That is a lot of time for a lot of heartaches. How many hankies is that? It has to be the whole Kleenex box!

I'm not making fun of it. The topic - women seeing their men off to war and never knowing if they'll come back alive - has been a tragic one since mankind began.

The cast in here was astonishing with people such as Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Guy Madison, Shirley Temple, Monty Whooley, Hattie McDaniel, Agnes Moorhead, Craig Stevens, Keenan Wynn, Robert Walker and Lionel Barrymore.

I found no fault with any of them expect perhaps Temple, whose young-adult roles never matched her little girl performances, except for "The Bachelor and The Bobbysoxer."

It was interesting to see a young Stevens, who 15 years later starred in television's "Peter Gunn" series. It also was a bit odd seeing Jones and Walker together because they got divorced in 1944, the same year this movie was released. This must have been awkward for them to film since they obviously were not doing well in their real-life marriage.

This movie isn't all tears. There are some genuinely warm moments in here, including a very nice Christmas scene. People generations ago were more hopeful and optimistic, too. Today's world is much more cynical, so this film makes some critics unhappy because they think the people are too goody-goody. Well, too bad for them. For me, that's part of the charm of classic era movies: nicer attitudes.

The photography was pretty good, too. There are lots of lights-and-shadows. Is the too long and should it have been edited? Yes, but it's still an emotional experience for many viewers, even 65 years later.

In a world were young men and women still go off to wars that so many of us only experience through the nightly news, I believe this film holds a place of growing importance. It asks us to consider the sacrifice that others are making and how those that wait for their return are also struggling to cope with their own terrible sacrifice. We should never forget that or be insensitive to it and for me; someone who has never been to war or suffered the loss of someone who has, this film serves as a good reminder. Beautifully filmed and acted - an important classic with a universal message of love and hope.B0002KPHZ650A155W28RHR13D9A155W28RHR13D9Richard A. The price was great and the movie arrived quickly... even during the busy Christmas season. There aren't too many movies about the home front during World War II and the brave people who kept things going. "Since You Went Away" is both an insight and a tribute to those who stayed behind.DescriptionNominated* for nine Academy AwardsÂ(r), this heart-warming, soul-stirring (Variety) portrait of life on the homefront during World War II is a magnificent picture rich in humor and poignant with heartbreak (The Hollywood Reporter). Claudette Colbert heads an all-star cast, including Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten and Shirley Temple, in this beautifully produced picture that gets into your heart (Los Angeles Examiner). With her husband Tim off at war, Anne Hilton (Colbert) struggles to be a pillar of strength for her daughters Jane (Jones) and Bridget (Temple). During America's darkest hours, she bravely steers her girls through heartbreak and hardships as she eagerly awaits news from overseas and wonders if life will ever be the same. *1944: Best Picture, Actress (Colbert), Supporting Actor (Monty Woolley), Supporting Actress (Jones), Cinematography (B&W), Art Direction (B&W), Editing, Music Score (won), Special EffectsAmazon.comA three-hour weepy extraordinaire, this 1944 offering from producer David O. Selznick (who also wrote the screenplay) was a tribute to all the families who stayed behind while their men went off to fight in World War II. Claudette Colbert is the mother of daughters Jennifer Jones and Shirley Temple; first seen coming home after dropping her war-bound husband at the train, she becomes the model of courage and strength on the homefront. The plot has a Saturday Evening Post feel today, as it follows the family's day-to-day life and struggles, whether with a crotchety boarder (a delightfully starchy Monty Woolley) or oldest daughter Jones's doomed romance with departing serviceman Robert Walker. They don't make them like this anymore and it's too bad. Nominated for a fistful of Oscars, it took only one, for its shadow-drenched black-and-white cinematography. --Marshall FineB0002KPHXII'll Be Seeing YouB00011D1OUMrs. Miniver0792846133The Best Years of Our LivesB00006AUGNThree Came HomeB000N3T0FUSo Proudly We Hail (Universal Cinema Classics)163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740146Mothers & Daughters740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722752011General AAS740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video909832Women During Wartime909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video291342Drama586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video722772011General AAS586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video412050Barrymore, Lionel411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418172Colbert, Claudette416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418754Corrigan, Lloyd416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418854Cotten, Joseph416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430214Jones, Jennifer429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436278McDaniel, Hattie434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438000Moorehead, Agnes434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438014Moran, Jackie434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434808Madison, Guy434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448022Stevens, Craig444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video449168Temple, Shirley448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451290Walker, Robert451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453250Woolley, Monty451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453404Wynn, Keenan451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video455912Cromwell, John455278( C )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579548( S )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 -
This is a delightful, lighter-than-air romp. The cast, sets, costumes and direction are flawless, topped only by the wit of the screenplay and Barrymore's hysterical performance. Was he drunk during filming? Was he parodying hmself? Does it matter? He's fabulous!

This movie is little known compared to It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby and several other films. I can't understate how great this comedy is. I first saw it several years ago at the Dryden Theatre in Rochester, NY which is a classic movie theatre attached to the George Eastman House. I was in high school and loved screwball comedies. I had never heard of this one though. I laughed until my sides hurt and totally fell in love with John Barrymore and Don Ameche. Claudette Colbert was already one of my favorites. This movie is a classic of any age and deserves a bigger reputation. She goes smoothly from one ridiculous situation to another in her attempts to take on the persona of a baroness, while in actuality she is a down and out "American in Paris." There is a reason for her facade and the story gets juicier and juicier. This classic of the Thirties is superior to most other comedies and a model of what a good romantic comedy should be. Take heed Hollywood.DescriptionAcademy Award® winners* Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche and John Barrymore light up the screen in Midnight - one of the best romantic comedies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The fun begins when a penniless showgirl (Colbert) impersonates a Hungarian countess and, with the help of an aristocrat (Barrymore), quickly adapts to her new lifestyle. But can she stop herself from falling in love with yet another poor man (Ameche)? Written by Academy Award® winners** Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett, Midnight has been hailed as "just about the best light comedy ever caught by the camera!" (Motion Picture Daily)Amazon.com essential videoAlthough Hollywood's golden year of 1939 is best remembered for Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, it was also a banner year for sophisticated screen comedy, and Mitchell Leisen's Midnight is a deliciously prime example. Screenwriters Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett were in peak form when they concocted this smooth confection about Eve Peabody (Claudette Colbert), an American showgirl in Paris who is out of work, money, and luck when a handsome cabbie (Don Ameche) offers to drive her around the City of Light to search for employment as a nightclub chanteuse. Nobody's hiring, but Eve has a better plan: posing as a Hungarian countess, she smuggles her way into Parisian high society and suddenly finds herself in the lap of luxury, commissioned by a wealthy aristocrat (John Barrymore) to seduce a French playboy (Francis Lederer) away from Barrymore's not-so-loyal wife (Mary Astor). While Eve is living it up at the Ritz Hotel and enjoying trips to Versailles, Ameche's on a mission to find her and declare his true love.
Class distinction, infidelity, false identity... these were daring ingredients for a 1939 comedy, and Midnight (a casebook display of Paramount's shimmering studio style of the '30s) is as fresh today as it was when first released. The silky perfection of the Wilder-Brackett screenplay is expertly served by Leisen (a director who deserves ranking with Ernst Lubitsch and Preston Sturges), and Colbert is merely the brightest star in a flawless cast of screwball veterans. Poking fun at the elite was a Wilder-Brackett specialty, and Barrymore is particularly savvy to the material, giving a performance that's simultaneously sly, desperate, and hilariously inspired. The plot is so elegantly executed that Midnight makes most comedies of later decades look pale in comparison. Gone are the days, it seems, when sophistication, wit, and good taste were an integral part of Hollywood comedy. Midnight offers all of those qualities in abundance, making it a perfect antidote to the crudeness that dominates mainstream comedy at the turn of the millennium. --Jeff Shannon B0012GVMIAEasy Living (Universal Cinema Classics)B0012GVMIUThe Major and the Minor Bravo Frank Capra. I would recommend this film to film lovers who are into comedy.B000022TSL50A2XTOI57K3XA62A2XTOI57K3XA62BookmanCalifornia USA02009-04-03Outstanding Movie, Poor PictureMy five stars are for IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, not for this DVD. If I were rating the DVD quality alone without regard to the movie, I'd give it one star or maybe half a star. I separate the two concepts because I'm buying more than the intellectual property (i.e., "the movie") when I buy a DVD. I'd seen IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT on TV a dozen times before I saw the DVD for sale. It's why I wanted the DVD as soon as I saw it. But I like to know what kind of value I'm getting for my money. I presume you do too.

Forewarned is forearmed: When you pop this DVD into your player, you'll see that the picture quality is poor. It will be as bad as any DVD you have in your collection and probably worse. I'm telling you this so you won't be surprised or disappointed.

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is one of the greatest movies ever made; and yet the picture quality on this DVD is no better than what you might have seen on broadcast TV twenty years ago--no better than if you'd bought it from a bootlegger at a swap-meet. It deserves better treatment, and will no doubt get it eventually. Having said this, I recommend buying this DVD anyway and here's why. The current copyright date on the package is 2008, which means we shouldn't expect the one we really want, with the "all-new digitally remastered picture" and "all-new digital transfer," to be available anytime soon. Sometimes it's better to hold out and wait for the new-and-improved version. For IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, don't wait. Buy this one now, and buy the new-and-improved version when it becomes available.B000022TSL42A39CX0EE4BZCZCA39CX0EE4BZCZCCraig ConnellLockport, NY USA32009-02-26Could Have Been Super With Different Ending; Still A Top 'Classic'The first movie to sweep all the major Academy Awards, this film is still popular today. That's probably so because the dialog between the two stars of the picture - Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert - is just great.

Those two make this fun to watch. I enjoyed it, however, much more on the first viewing than subsequent ones. It lost some of its zip after I knew what to expect. The ending, too, was very weak. Over the last 20 minutes, the story gets very stupid.

Here is yet another trivialization of marriage, another common theme during the classic era. Colbert says it herself in one line, mentioning she doesn't care for this other guy, but what the heck, might as well get married, what's the difference?

Huh?

If the scriptwriters here would have just kept the "road" part of this film going longer - with Gable and Colbert trading barbs - it would have been super. Gable has the best lines an is the most fun to watch but Colbert can hold her own. She looks really pixie-ish and cute, although most of her closeups are done with a fuzzy lens, another habit of filmmakers of that era had with female stars.

One of the film world's most famous scenes is in this movie: the hitch-hiking scene in which the cocky Cable explains the different ways of successful thumbing in order to get a ride....and gets nowhere while Colbert, on her first try, gets a car to stop immediately after she lifts up her skirt! That is still one of the great comedic scenes in movie history.

Overall, this is still one of the best comedies of "The Golden Age," even with its faults.

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT I thought was excellant. The story was good, not draggy. Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert were at there best,I thought, in this comedy.
The pacing of incidents seems to be the right timing for us.
and well written example of the best from Hollywood's Golden Age. The sheer display of high end craft of movie making is exhilarating to watch.
AT the 1935 Academy Awards it swept for five Oscars for its two stars,
it holds up very well, a terrific study in character, dialogue, good story telling and spot-on film craft. Product DescriptionMovie DVDAmazon.com essential videoDirector Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) took home every Oscar in the book (well, okay, all the major ones) for this seminal 1934 comedy starring Clark Gable as a hard-bitten reporter who stays close to a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) rather than lose a good story. Funny and sexy, the film is full of memorable scenes often referred to in other films, such as the "walls of Jericho" (a mere bedcover hung on a line down the middle of a room so opposite-sex roommates can get undressed), and Colbert's famous flash of thigh to stop a speeding car in its tracks. Capra's brisk, urbane brand of wit was a perfect complement to his populist faith in the common man (in this case, Gable's character), and that inspired combination makes this film both a spirited entertainment and an uplifting experience. --Tom Keogh B00004RF97The Philadelphia Story6305736650CasablancaB0007TKNCYBringing Up Baby (Two-Disc Special Edition)B00005A06NSome Like It This movie is one of John Ford's and Henry Fonda's best. Unfortunately I found the audio commentary to be inconsistent. It was at its' best when addressing movie history but lacking when both addressing the history of the times and when exploring the commentators' own views of history.

I will not address the movie itself because many of the commentators have already done so. I agree with those who think this is an amazing picture with John Ford, Henry Fonda, Claudette Colbert as well as the supporting cast at their best. I have seen this movie five times and will be watching it again.

This movie is based on a historical novel and takes place in the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary war. It is about Fonda and Colbert attempting to start a life for themselves while fighting with other patriots against Torys (loyalists) and Indians supporting the British.

When the commentary begins two commentators introduce themselves. Nick Redman announces he does not know much about this period of American History and asks Julie Kirgo to fill him in about America at the time. She does this throughout the movie.

One of the first things he asks is how far the characters would have traveled when they went from Albany to the Mohawk Valley. Ms. Kirgo states she is not sure and then guesses between 100 and 200 miles. Actually it is between 80 and 86 miles. Fonda and Colbert settle in Deerfield New York near the settlement of German Flatts in the Mohawk Valley.

Finding the distance from Albany, N.Y. to Deerfield or German Flatts in the Mohawk Valley is not hard. It took me 2 minutes to do a search on the internet and find it is approximately 86 miles to Deerfield and 80 miles to German Flatts. I don't know why this question was not discussed before hand or why taping could not be stopped for a couple of minutes to look up the information. If the two people discussing the movie don't have all the information about what they are talking about it makes wonder why I should keep listening

At times during the movie the commentators give their personal views of history and become political. At approximately one hour and 20 minutes into the movie one commentator explains that if you look at this movie you understand where the right to bear arms comes from. It seems that during the period of the movie people needed guns to defend themselves against all kinds of enemies and kill food but now people who talk about the right to bear arms today are forgetting you don't have to defend your homes like you did hundreds of years ago and use guns to kill food.

This comment has nothing to do with the movie. While is important for people to decide where they stand on the issue of gun control, their views do not belong in a commentary on this movie.

Similarly a comment is made about how the settlers unfairly encroached on Indian lands. While a strong case can and has been made about the treatment of American Indians by settlers it is not addressed in this movie and I believe does not belong in the commentary. You can't even argue that the Indians fighting for the British did so solely because their lands had been taken by the colonists because Indians fought for the colonists as well.

We are also told in the commentary that history is everyone reneging on their promises. Once again this issue is not addressed in this movie so I don't know why the commentators need to discuss it here.

My favorite discussion dealt with the Homestead Act which was signed into law in 1862, approximately 90 years after the time this movie took place. The commentators explained that settlers in this movie settled forested land and made it their own and then started talking about the Homestead Act. Once again they discuss an important part of history that was not a part of this movie.

In another case one of the commentators notes that the Torys' interests in fighting were mostly commercial. There is no discussion of the politics of the Revolutionary War in this movie and why Torys' remained loyal to England. Further I am not a historian but have read that some Torys' fought because of a loyalty to England which was viewed as their country. The movie 1776 makes some moving arguments as to why this nation should have remained a part of the British Empire.

The commentators even discuss their view of what it means to be patriotic. I am interested in what John Ford thought about patriotism not what the commentators think about patriotism.

I did learn some important things when the commentators stuck to the movie. I learned that about John Ford and his relationship with his brother who was in this movie. I learned the part Darryl Zanuck played in the making of the movie. I learned about the relationship between Claudettee Colbert and John Ford and Henry Fonda and John Ford.

I also learned about a battle scene Ford did not shoot and how the scene with Henry Fonda running to get help was changed from the original screenplay. I learned about the book that this movie was based on and I did some research about the historical areas in the Mohawk Valley which exist today.

This made me more frustrated. The commentators said some fascinating things about the movie. I learned some interesting stuff. If they had stuck to the movie and been prepared to discuss that alone this would have been a great commentary rather than having to listen to information that I do not think is relevant to this movie at all.
B0007PALM023AV37WGFZH7PIOAV37WGFZH7PIOVincent TesiVinnyBrick, New Jersey82008-05-21"Drums" Pound a Shallow BeatNot much of a fan of John Ford. After viewing Drums Along the Mohawk it didn't change my opinion. Still don't know why some film buffs hail Ford as the demigod of the western genre. Drums Along the Mohawk is filled with melodramatic dialog, sub par acting by Henry Fonda and Colbert, and poor camera work that didn't utilize the sprawling greenery and hilltops that beautify upstate New York. Colbert wears way too much eye makeup and doesn't look like a frontier woman living in the 1700's. Ford gratuitously places his friend Ward Bond in a supporting role, but it is Edna May Oliver who steals every frame that Ford allows her to be in. The sappy soundtrack is misplaced, more suited to the silent film era and not much historical realism is used to legitimize the struggle among settlers, British loyalists, and Native Indians during the 1700's. Edmonds' historical novel, "Drums Along the Mohawk" (1939) remains among the few memorable films about the American Revolution. Director John Ford's first Technicolor production benefits immeasurably from the Oscar-nominated cinematography of Bert Glennon and Ray Rennahan. Though episodic and slow moving in its narrative structure, Ford doesn't shy away from the brutal savagery of frontier life. Henry Fonda and Edna May Oliver deliver standout portrayals, thus compensating for a miscast Claudette Colbert - the weak link in an otherwise excellent ensemble. Not top-drawer Ford, but entertaining nonetheless.DescriptionLawless frontier. Indian attacks. Settlers protecting themselves the only way they know how-with guns and courage. In the years before the Revolutionary War, the East was as wild as the West would be one hundred years later. Henry Fonda delivers one of his most memorable performances ever as a young frontier leader protecting his family in the backwoods of New York state. Claudette Colbert so-stars as his spirited wife. With a fine supporting cast that also includes Edna May Oliver and John Carradine, this is one of John Ford's most exciting historical dramas.Amazon.comNineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.
Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes as though with the passing of a cloud shadow.
In this, his first color film, Ford created indelible images of the dawning of America: a lone wagon making its way through acres of long grass rippling in the wind; the Indians, at the onset of their first raid, seeming to materialize out of the mist, out of the very trunks of trees; a ragged line of farmers with flintlocks passing along a split-rail fence, then resolving into a column, an army, marching toward a distant horizon. (Utah's Wasatch mountain country stands in persuasively for upstate New York in pioneer days.) Edna May Oliver scored a best-supporting-actress Oscar nomination as a memorably crusty frontier widow, while Ward Bond--oddly omitted from the opening credits--claimed a place of honor in the John Ford Stock Company playing Fonda's best friend. --Richard T. They were an extremely hard-worked, under-appreciated group during World War II, so this tribute is well- earned and I'm glad to have seen it. God bless those ladies who made such sacrifices.

It didn't hurt watching Claudette Colbert, Paulette Goddard and Vernoica Lake, however. All of them looked very pretty. Lake was missing her peek-a-boo long blonde hair but probably - at least facially - looked better than I've ever seen her. Her role was the most interesting.

But for 126 minute-film, as a male looking for an action film, I would have liked to see a bit less courtship scenes, which included some corny dialog. I realize they needed to break up the action scenes and give something for the females to watch, but they often made no sense. For example, near the end Colbert marries George Reeves (yes, Superman) even though she admits she knows almost nothing about the man!.

This superb wartime drama deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Mrs. Miniver. Those who dismiss it offhand as propaganda would do well to view it first and try not being moved. Based on the stories of eight real nurses who had survived Bataan and Corregidor, and were still serving their country, it offers a very real look at the dark early days of WWII, when men and women were doing little more than buy America time to regroup and rearm after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Director Mark Sandrich, remembered more today for his wonderful films with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, makes this long yet tender tribute to those nurses and soldiers a film every American should see.

Claudette Colbert, Paulette Goddard, and Veronica Lake make you forget about their glamour a few moments into the film as the viewer is swept up in their plight. Written by Allan Scott, and photographed by Charles Lang, with a fabulous score by Miklos Rosza as accompaniment, all three leads shine in various times throughout the film. Lake owns the first portion of the film, Goddard the middle, and Colbert the end. Colbert is the anchor, however, becoming more accessible as the film goes on. George Reeves, as Colbert's sweetheart, and Sonny Tufts especially, as Goddard's, make this film charming and heartbreaking, elevating it beyond Hollywood's take on WWII nurses.

As the film opens, the nurses are returning home from their harrowing tours in Bataan and Corregidor. But something traumatic has silenced their leader, Lt. Janet (Davy) Davidson, who wanted to stay behind and now will not speak. The doctor believes the only way to help her is to know in full the background of what happened to them. So as painful as it is to talk about, Joan O'Doul (Goddard) and the other girls relate their story. What follows is a tender and moving tragedy of many little tragedies suffered by Americans during those early days after we were attacked. In 1943, it was a wonderfully dramatic film which helped our country understand just what we were fighting for and the sacrifice the free world was making towards that end. Viewed today, it is no less a moving document of a remarkable time in the world's history.

Davy and Janet find themselves on a ship in the middle of the Pacific awaiting orders after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Veronica Lake joins the nurses in the shaky and uncertain future before them. Olivia (Lake) will not make friends or socialize with the other nurses. Only after they discover they are heading to Bataan, a place none have ever heard of, does Davy finally reach inside and pull out of her the heartbreaking reason she must go with them. Lake has one of her finest moments on film here, and will have another when the nurses must escape from the oncoming Japanese soldiers or suffer the fate of those women at Nanking. It is the pivotal dramatic moment in the film, changing the film's tone and letting us know that this is a serious film about war and sacrifice.

The human element is never lost amidst the bombings and makeshift hospitals, as letters from home, wartime romance, and the impending chance they may themselves not survive are handled well by Sandrich. Colbert is excellent throughout as their solid leader trying not to fall in love with a soldier (George Reeves) taken with her, but not succeeding. It will lay more at her doorstep until one more retreat without knowing for sure he is okay will overwhelm her. It is Goddard's Joan who lights up the screen, however, changing from the frivolous and flirtatious to reveal a depth brought out by war and circumstance. Her unexpected romantic attachment to a sweet but none too bright soldier named Kansas has both charm and a sense of realism. Sonny Tufts excels in the role of Kansas and left an impression on moviegoers.

Little moments of normalcy and fun, such as Joan's black evening dress she takes or wears everywhere, even underneath the kaki, and Davy's Tojo, the tiny monkey given her by John, who becomes their mascot, are offset by deflating war news of convoys they were counting on for relief being sunk, and constant bombings of the hopitals during the early days of the war. In this way, it is a very real picture of what happened, with war interrupting plans and lives, and taking people in directions they could not have foreseen. Mary Servoss gives a fine performance also as the Captain who suffers a loss greater than any should ever have to bear. Barbara Britton and Walter Abel round out a fine cast.

Those who either dismiss this film without seeing it first, or give up on it after the first half hour, are truly missing out on one of the most moving tributes to those who served their country during those dark early days of WWII ever filmed. Some gave all. A touching and fabulous film not to be missed. This film about Army nurses and based on actual letters from women writing home. It was a huge hit in its day but never made it to DVD until now. Claudette Colbert is the star but the other women in the film provide the perfect supporting cast. Veronica Lake is a standout as the woman traumatized by the attack on Pearl Harbor and gives an unforgettable performance that should have earned her an Academy nod but that went to Paulette Goddard instead. I have always enjoyed watching Claudette Colbert in comedy (The Egg and I) historical (Drums Along The Mohawk, Cleopatra) and tear jerkers (Imitation of Life, Since You Went Away) but this movie is really something! Set at the onset of WWII, it's the story of a group of U.S. Army nurses leaving San Francisco for their tour of duty in Hawaii in December 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbor changes their destination, and their lives. Don't miss this one!B000N3T0FU50A2H4IB1N5BMZNGA2H4IB1N5BMZNGR. Denistondayspring7Lincoln, CA United States02008-08-03Stellar FilmThis movie was a real treat. Most war films focus on the military, front-line aspects, understandably, and it's rare to find one that centers around the nurses' experiences. It's a shame this film not more well-known--I found out about it when I read "Our Mother's War"--because it hits all the right notes. The three principles, Claudette, Paulette, and Veronica play off each other very nicely. They weren't just pretty faces, that's for sure!

Some things about the film may make today's viewers flinch, namely the act of calling Japanese people, "Japs." However, it is important to consider the point of view of those involved and of the initial audience. My paternal grandfather was a WWII vet, and until the day he died he always called Japanese people by that derogatory term. I don't like the practice, but I am a product of my time. While "So Proudly We Hail" and other films of the era are products of their time as well--and what isn't, even things that are timeless, like "The Wizard of Oz"--it does not detract from the picture as a whole.Product DescriptionThe true story of a war-front nurse in wwii who displayedan honorable amount of courage while caring for the injured and supervising nine other nurses. PetrucelliTHE ENTERTAINMENT REPORT (ALAN W. PETRUCELLI)12008-02-12GET OUT THE TISSUES . . . MELODRAMA AT ITS TEARY-EYED BESTThe story might as well have been yanked from today's headlines: love, lust, betrayal, racism, romance and more than tragedy ever packed in 120 hours. Based on the 1933 bestselling novel about two widows and their daughters as they struggle to find true happiness in a world plagued by racism, Imitation of Life is the ultimate tear-jerker. This special edition contains both versions, the original 1934 Best Picture nominee starring Claudette Colbert and the 1959 gem starring Lana Turner. Get out the Kleenex. Make that two boxes.B0000WN0NW40A3JZ4URJRSJY97A3JZ4URJRSJY97Brian E. SmithATLANTA, GA United States12008-01-24Imitation of LifeThe quality of the movies on DvD is surprisingly good given how old the original master reels are (72 years & 49 years old respectively). The DvD's especially seem nice even on my 42' high definition tv. I was however surprised at the fact that there were not two disk in the packaging. It is a double sided DVD which is very unusual and you need to handle both sides with extreme care, as there is also no silk screening or labels on either side. Again the quality is really good; so if your in it for the movies, it is a good buy.DescriptionImitation of Life (1934)
In this Academy Award-nominated Best Picture, Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers are superb as two women with young daughters who build a fortune together. But success doesn't save them from sorrow with the passing years.
Delilah's light-skinned teenager rejects her mother and her race, while Bea must choose between the man she loves and the daughter who loves him, too. Now all of them will pay the price of love in this spellbinding classic.
Imitation of Life (1959)
Lana Turner heads the outstanding cast with Juanita Moore in the second screen version of this emotionally-charged story about two widows and their troubled daughters.
Lora's search for success causes her to neglect her daughter, while Annie's daughter rejects her culture by trying to pass for white. As the years pass, each of the four women realizes that she has been living out an emotionally fruitless existence.Amazon.comImitation of Life (1959)
The last film in Hollywood of director Douglas Sirk (Written on the Wind), the 1959 Imitation of Life--an adaptation of Fannie Hurst's novel--is an endlessly fascinating film that speaks volumes about the American journey toward materialism and the racial tensions that are inseparable from it. Lana Turner plays a white single mother and aspiring actress who takes in a black housekeeper (Juanita Moore) and her daughter (played by an adolescent Susan Kohner), the latter so light-skinned she passes for white. As the years pass and success mounts for Turner, Moore also becomes more comfortable but her status as a domestic never changes. Meanwhile, Kohner's character, chafing against social constraints, rebels at every opportunity and throws a wrench into the perfect order Sirk chillingly captures through the precise, architectural design of his images. On one hand a '50s weepie and on the other a daring allegory, Imitation of Life is an unusual masterpiece. --Tom Keogh B00066FAOEPinkyB000B5XOT8Lady Sings the BluesB000JLTRH2SparkleB000XT1P48Portrait In Black / Madame X (Double Feature)B00007AJG2Claudine (1974)163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722753011General AAS163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video410074Alda, Robert409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video410894Armetta, Henry409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412352Beavers, Louise411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413204Black, Dorothy411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418172Colbert, Claudette416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418380Compton, Joyce416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420264Dee, Sandra419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video423346Fluellen, Joel422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425544Gould, Sandra424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426504Hale, Alan426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428766Hudson, Rochelle426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431792Kohner, Susan430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432458Lane, Lenita432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437944Moore, Juanita434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439478Norton, Barry438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440528Pangborn, Franklin440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442508Quigley, Juanita442450( Q )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447542Sparks, Ned444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447744Standing, Wyndham444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452556William, Warren451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452796Wilson, Clarence451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453024Withers, Jane451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video462244Sirk, Douglas403580( S )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video462412Stahl, John M403580( S )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279381All Universal Studios Titles14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279471Classics14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279421Drama14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579528( I )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - SwansonpromiseNew Mexico02009-07-02Fun Preston Sturges FilmI found it interesting that this film was made in the early 40's when we were still at war. I suppose the country needed this kind of light hearted entertainment, just as it did during the depression era. Right now I find it still good medicine as we face the biggest economic downturn since the 30's and wars are erupting everywhere. The outrageousness of the wonderful female lead, played by the beautiful Claudette Colbert is refreshingly politically incorrect. She knows that a good looking "girl" with long legs can get what she wants by her female charms and isn't afraid to use them. She can't cook or sew but is ravishing and not afraid to accept the gifts of the many men who offer them. Still, she is good hearted and pure in her love for her big, strong, handsome, hunky man.

This isn't my favorite Sturges film but it's still very good. He manages screwball comedy without going over the top, which was probably not an easy thing to do. All of the characters are likeable, too, which makes the film easy to watch. The Rudy Vallee character could have been played as dreadful but he was quite lovely. His "Goodnight Sweetheart" serenade is almost worth the price of the film. Likewise, his much married sister, played by Mary Astor, was so fun loving and light hearted that you had to like her. There was no malice anywhere!

Gordon Macrae, who shone so brightly in Sullivan's Travels is a little dull here but the rest of the cast makes up for it. Travelling by train seems delightfully exotic to us these days. The Fifth Avenue apartment and the Palm Beach house are all wonderfully decorated. Remember dressing tables with round mirrors? The times surely had their terrible aspects but this film just shows us the froth on top and sometimes it's fun to have some froth. B0006H32DY41A2MFNDNS1L7D16A2MFNDNS1L7D16JOHN GODFREYMilwaukee ,WI USA12009-06-24A review for fans of Preston Stuges movies. The Palm BeachStory by way of comparison, is in the top half of all his movies. I find it better than his two most celebrated movies, Hail the Conquering Hero & Miracle of Morgan Creek. They were made a little later & were rah rah World War II movies, hence their popularity. Before Palm Beach was The Lady Eve in '41. Excellent acting & perhaps his best. Sullivan's Travels was right before Palm Beach in '42 & they are equally good. Both have the virtue of the steady influence of Joel McCrea as the star. In Palm Beach he is Tom. His wife Gerrie is played by Claudette Colbert. He is a broke dreamer with big ideas. She is hot to trot. Her plan is to divorce him & find a rich sugar daddy to finance his dreams. She feigns indifference & boards a train leaving for Florida. It seems that Preston Sturges could get away with a lot more in his movies than the censors might have allowed in the forties. There was plenty of sexual innuendo, adult content & satire attacking wealth in this one. Adultry was implied. First he was subtle. So subtle that this movie has a family friendly air about it. More important he always incorporated a lengthy, absurd, ridiculous comedy scene. It would be madcap, funny, slapstick & even silly. These scenes must have distracted stupid censors. The Ale & Quail Club was a fraternity of old, rich guys. They were on convention from New York to Florida in a party car of a the train. They assisted Gerrie who was broke & without any clothes. The drunken fools were so out of control that their car is detached from the train enroute. Gerrie has escaped to the pullman sleeper & meets the fabulously wealthy John Hackensack III played by heart-throb crooner of the 20's, Rudy Vallee. He's lower she's upper but they get to know each other. You know he's going to break out in song sometime during the movie. By the time they get to Jacksonville & his yacht he's in love. They are met by Hackensack's sister Centimitia, played by Mary Astor. She is a predator & has her heart set on Tom who has persued Gerrie down to Palm Beach. The ending is a bit of a cop-out. But Struges uses all the latitude he is given to good use. B0006H32DY50A20DWYIK841GIVA20DWYIK841GIVApril HillapriloveSt. George, UT02009-01-30Cute & FunnyThis movie is hilarious! Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea are awesome. The antics she uses in trying to leave him only make him want her more. This is a beautiful, yet funny love story! Even if you don't usually like old movies, you will enjoy this one ~ it is a classic! I have watched it a couple of times because it is so funny and I loved hearing singer, Rudy Vallie's rendition of "Goodnight Sweetheart" with a full orchestra. Of course the leading actors, Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea did an outstanding job in their roles. Product DescriptionAn inventor needs cash to develop his big idea. (mca) Release Date: 02/01/2005 Starring: Claudette Colbert Jack Norton Run time: 88 minutes Rating: Nr Director: Preston SturgesAmazon.com essential videoAmong the earliest writers to set his sights on the director's chair, Preston Sturges brought a frank, unsentimental view of the war between the sexes to his mid-'40s features that exemplify his style, as demonstrated in this prescient 1942 gem. Architect Tom Jeffers (Joel McCrea) and his wife, Gerry (Claudette Colbert), further refine the archetypal Sturges couple--the male embodying strength, idealism, and a certain naivete, the female ultimately stronger, smarter, and (as revealed early on in an astonishing speech by Colbert) clearer-eyed and more pragmatic about the subtext of sex. This giddy shaggy-dog story follows the couple's split, and Gerry's subsequent flight to Palm Beach. This head-snapping frolic is paced by double-entendres and lampooning looks at the very rich, with standout performances by the predatory Princess Centimillia (the delicious Mary Astor), who's more than ready to comfort Tom, and the wealthy, dim-witted John D. Hackensacker III (Rudy Vallee, staking out a new career, post-crooner, as comic foil), Gerry's new suitor. Even the predictable reunion of the star-crossed lovers is achieved with an antic surrealism. Sturges's strength in building strong character ensembles is matched by his affection for coupling screwball dialogue with physical slapstick, seldom to better effect than in the drunken target practice of the Ale and Quail Club, who make Colbert's train ride to Florida a different kind of shoot-'em-up. --Sam Sutherland B0012GVMIKMidnight (Universal Cinema Classics)B0012GVMIAEasy Living (Universal Cinema Classics)B000NIBUT4Ball of FireB0009W5J78The Miracle of Morgan's CreekB0002XNT08The More the Merrier163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291115Class Differences291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video14155001Comedy of Manners291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video523936Classic Comedies163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video882784Screwball Comedy163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video411116Astor, Mary409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411132Ates, Roscoe409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418172Colbert, Claudette416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418400Conklin, Chester416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420370Demarest, William419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425930Greig, Robert424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428708Hoyt, Arthur426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436244McCrea, Joel434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437132Meyer, Torben434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439484Norton, Jack438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440528Pangborn, Franklin440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video442036Potel, Victor440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450588Vallee, Rudy450514( V )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451644Warwick, Robert451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video462570Sturges, Preston403580( S )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279381All Universal Studios Titles14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279471Classics14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279411Comedy14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579542( P )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1240754011Romance163375Romantic Comedies163394Romantic Drama251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 -
based on a true story, this films envelopes the viewer into the tribulations and horrors endured by one woman's courage and determination to survive the Japanese concentration camps.

Claudette Colbert assumes the role of Agnes Newton Keith, the woman whose life the story is based upon. Colbert gives her heart to the role. in her day, Colbert was considered one of the entertainment industry's most attractive women.

upon viewing the film, i was shocked at how revealing the attire worn by Colbert was in parts of the film. the clothes worn were relevant to the setting and situation of the story, but for 1950 i deemed it very arousing though i'm sure this was unintentional. very little imagination was necessary for one to virtually envision miss Colbert naked.
The Movie
This movie has obviously been influenced by Singing in the Rain, which isn't a bad thing. It takes the formula without of course the musical and runs with it 2 guys one gal the main guy falls for the girl she falls for him and yes it even rains on them go figure......lol. It's a story of a writer Christopher Madden who rights a book the book is bought to be made a movie. She boards a train and bam there the duke. From there the fun begins. This movie shows the lighter side of the duke which is always fun to watch.

The Video:
Made in 1944 it is black and white full frame. It's nothing spectacular. It could use a cleaning, but it watch able.

The Audio
Presented in 1.0 mono so it's and old movie that's not been updated.

The Extras
I Love My Husband But
A very Looney tunes episode like story about the different types of husbands and the wife who deal with them. I have no real idea why this is here. It was made in 1947 and Without Reservations was made in 1946 so I am not sure why it is here. It is silly and something to watch once.

Holiday for Shoestrings
This is the shoemaker and the elves story from Merrie Melodies that ran before this movie aired it is a charming cartoon. One that I am sure many of us have seen many many times a very nice addition to the collection.

Summary:
All in all a good picture nothing to go crazy over but as for a duke picture it's a nice ride for a couple of hours. The DVD is well done with nice menus and a couple of extras that make it a night at the movies.
B000O599MG420A2NJO6YE954DBHA2NJO6YE954DBHLawrance M. BernaboThe Zenith City, Duluth, Minnesota202004-05-04"Hello, Miss Klotch. I brought you back your wings..."When I was in grade school and we lived in New Jersey there was a television station out of New York City that would show the same movie every afternoon for the entire week. There were two movies that I remember watching five afternoons in a row after school (or maybe it was during the summer). One was the Steve Reeve's 1962 film "The Trojan Horse" ("La Troia di Guerra") and the other was this 1946 comedy from director Mervyn LeRoy starring Claudette Colbert, John Wayne, and Don Defore.
"Without Reservations" is based on the novel "Thanks, God! I'll Take It From Here" by Jane Allen and Mae Livingston. Colbert plays author Christopher "Kit" Madden who has written a best selling novel entitled "Here is Tomorrow." She ends up being a cross between Ayn Rand, in that her novel speaks to an idealized type of man, and Margaret Mitchell, in that she cannot find anybody in Hollywood who could possibly play Mark Winston, her hero, and has started a nation wide search for an unknown. However, when she hops on a train to travel from New York to Hollywood she gets bumped from her first-class accommodations and has to ride coach. She meets two traveling Army aviators, Rusty Thomas (Wayne) and his buddy Dink Watson (DeFore). Rusty is Mark Winston incarnate and Kit thinks he would be perfect for the role. But Rusty has no use for Hollywood (or "Here is Tomorrow") so Kit has to pretend she is somebody else and comes up with the last name of Klotch (this raises some eyebrows all around).
This romantic comedy follows the trio as Kit tries to get Rusty to Hollywood. Of course she falls for him as they travel together and she has to keep scrambling to keep her identity a secret. One of my favorite scenes is where she goes into a liquor store and scores several bottles by convincing the owner she is Kit Madden by reciting the part of her book her is reading. Meanwhile he is convincing her that she really needs to rethink her idea of what a real man should be. When he finds out the truth, Rusty is not happy and Kit has to scramble to bring about the requisite happy ending.
Overall this is a film whose chief virtue is its charm. You expect Colbert to be able to do romantic comedy, but Wayne's deftness has to surprise you a bit. Anne Triola steals several scenes as a "beetle" whose path keeps crossing that of the boys. Jack Benny has a nice cameo appearance as himself, seeking an autograph from Christopher Madden, and Miss Louella Parsons, Cary Grant, and Dolores Moran show up as themselves as well. LeRoy also does something interesting with the final shot, which is of Kit's bed while we hear the couple reconcile off-camera.
I still catch this movie every time I stumble across it and while it is not a great romantic comedy it is still a nice little film that you should check out sometime when you stumble across it.B000O599MG516A2PLIGGXIGDQ11A2PLIGGXIGDQ11Michael L. I enjoyed it a great deal; however, I would like to know if it comes in DVD format. Usually when I order movies I don't check if it is in VHS or DVD and have always received DVD -- so I never thought to check it. Please advise, because I'd like to order one for my parents. Thank you.B000F7CMP450A356ZKEUZ1FIFJA356ZKEUZ1FIFJTom C.New York City, USA12008-06-24This movie is cut because.......The reason they cut these old movies is because if 3 people find something offensive, the studios do not want a frivilous law suit on their hands, so it's it's just easier to cut the film to appease the minority of people. Older movies were not politically correct, and as a result, out come the scissors and let's snip away! Yet today's movies try to offend everyone when it comes to sex and drugs, but that's o.k. because it appeals to the 15 year old movie goers. Something wrong with this picture?DescriptionOil! The ebony lifeblood of American industry...and of mighty fortunes made and lost. In search of one of those black-gold fortunes, two bare-knuckle wildcatters dream, scheme, team up and square off in the make-or-break frenzy of a Texas Boom Town. In this pyrotechnics-filled film classic, the only things bigger than the adventure are the four stars: screen giants Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy as the oilmen and Claudette Colbert and Hedy Lamarr as the women in their tumultuous lives. As the foursome struggle through the personal upheaval of love and loyalties, wealth comes a gusher ? and a rig bursts into a screen-filling inferno that could turn dreams to dust. No wonder Boom Town boomed at the box office, too, as the biggest moneymaker of 1940.Amazon.comThere may be a pair of impressive ladies in the cast, but don't be fooled--Boom Town is a cool love-hate buddy movie from the get-go. Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy are oil wildcatters who meet during a Texas strike, take an instant dislike to each other, go into business together, tussle over a woman, break up, reunite, etc., etc. The film spans years, and various parts of the continent, as each man gets rich and goes bust with regularity. Claudette Colbert, re-teaming with It Happened One Night co-star Gable, is the woman who comes between them, and Hedy Lamarr presents a more exotic temptation later on. Another star here is the dialogue by veteran screenwriter John Lee Mahin, which--despite the wild, credulity-bending twists in the story--is chockfull of salty, slangy talk. The early scenes in the Texas town are crammed with believable oil jargon and great period touches (such as an entrepreneur who charges money to walk on planks across a muddy street). Director Jack Conway (Saratoga) gets the roughneck appeal of the material, and a sequence involving an oil fire is a knockout. Gable and Tracy, who had worked together so memorably in San Francisco, are a terrific match: Gable is all straight-ahead gusto, declaiming every line, as Tracy underplays to crafty effect. Nice supporting parts for Frank Morgan and Chill Wills span the entire movie, which ends, curiously, in a courtroom and a speech about capitalism. --Robert HortonB000F7CMQISan FranciscoB000022TSLIt Happened One NightB000F7CMXQChina SeasB000F7CMQ8MogamboB0012GVMIKMidnight (Universal Cinema Classics)163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290940Classics163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290941Comic Action163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video712532Feature Films712256Animation404276Genres130DVD139452Video712258General712256Animation404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video508524General163358Animation163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163417General163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video722769011General AAS507990Classics163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video595062Family Films163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video411170Atwill, Lionel409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413552Bois, Curt411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418172Colbert, Claudette416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424192Gable, Clark424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425454Gordon, Roy424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426420Haden, Sara426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432302Lamarr, Hedy432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432472Lane, Richard432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438104Morgan, Frank434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438602Murphy, Horace434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440188Orth, Frank439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video449952Tracy, Spencer448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452770Wills, Chill451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video455764Conway, Jack455278( C )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600330All Titles515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600312Action & Adventure515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600314Comedy515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600316Documentary515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600318Drama515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579514( B )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 - 1949562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoRO84UD1WAZNF11940 Academy Award Winners & Nominees on DVD & VHSR180PZTRB250VQSpencer Tracy filmsR1JU3RLADDMKB7If you want to discover Hedy Lamarr (1914 - 2000)R2R542D86T6TJESpencer Tracy and MeR1J0RA269CJ9F0My Spencer TracyR3B8ONP0D3ZSE0Big Town CinemaR3BDY6KJW6F0ASThe Best Films of 1940R3L6JBGX7YNVSPTHE LEGENDARY CLAUDETTE COLBERT3EERX6GLVOL0DSome Great Films in Black and White
