Amith (kndy)California72009-05-06Blu-ray: "GREASE" looks absolutely gorgeous in High Definition! Highly recommended!"GREASE" is the most successful movie musical ever created. The 1978 film was based on a musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey and eventually caught the attention in the early 70's of producer Allan Carr who purchase the rights to adapt the play into a film.

With the popularity of "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" in 1977 which help boost the career of John Travolta, producer Robert Stigwood joined Allan Carr to create a film based on this play. Tapping director Randal Kleiser who worked with Travolta in the popular 1976 TV film "The Boy and his Bubble", recruiting "GREASE" musical choreographer Patricia Birch and hiring Director of Photography Bill Butler ("Jaws", "Stripes" and "Rocky II & III", etc.), this team would create a film that would become a musical ingrained into American pop culture.

Despite no respect in supporting the film by the major film studios, "GREASE" would become the second highest grossing film in 1978 behind "Superman" bringing in $96 million in the box office, the "GREASE" soundtrack would achieve #1 status around the world during its release and the film received many award nominations.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

"GREASE" is featured in 1080p High Definition and I will tell you I was blown away by the picture quality.

I've watched this film dozens of times, owned the VHS and both DVD versions and when I started watching the High Definition Blu-ray transfer, I was speechless. The many colors featured in the film were quite vibrant. This film is over 30-years-old and Paramount really did a great service in the transfer and remaster of this film. Closeups, outdoor scenes, you name it, the film looks spectacular!

I compared my 25th Anniversary DVD to this Blu-ray and just the opening sequence alone with the two at the beach, the colors are just absolutely stunning on Blu-ray. I was literally in awe of how beautiful this film looked in High Definition. The DVD video quality just doesn't compare to the Blu-ray disc and I was quite impressed!

As for audio, audio is presented in English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD and also in French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish mono. Since music is a big part of the film, it was important for me to test this Blu-ray out on my system. Where the 1977 film "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" was just spectacular for its High Definition audio transfer, I was hoping to have an awesome lossless soundtrack for "GREASE".

Somehow, in the beginning of the film, it seemed as if the audio coming from the center channel was a bit lower than my front speakers. So, dialogue seemed as if it was being overpowered by the music. I've run a variety of tests and I did have to increase my center channel dB a little bit to compensate for the music coming louder but this may be due to my audio setup for my receiver. But everything sounded well throughout the film after the adjustment.

The dialogue was quite clear but the music really came alive and I did notice certain sounds utilizing my subwoofer during the car and music scenes. But overall, the music does sound great and clear via Dolby TrueHD 5.1.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

"GREASE" comes with a good number of special features. Included on this Blu-ray disc are:

* Commentary: Commentary by Director Randal Kleiser and choreographer Patricia Birch - This commentary is quite interesting as Kleiser talked more about the film side of "GREASE" while Patricia Birch talked about the choreography part of the film. Both give really good insight of bringing the musical to film, talking about the things they had to accomplish and how Kleiser, Birch and DoP Butler really had to work closely with each other and the talent to make this film successful. You learn about the challenge of filming the National Bandstand segment, the finale during 102 degree weather and how Olivia Newton-John had to have her tight clothing sewn on and more.
* Introduction by Randal Kleiser - A brief :24 second introduction to the special features. Kleiser does several introductions throughout various features.
* Rydell Sing-Along - This segment is for those who want to watch the musical parts from the film and on the bottom of the screen is a karaoke single along.
* Featurette: The Time, The Place, The Motion: Remembering Grease - (22:27) This is the main featurette featuring interviews with the Director, producers, the cast sharing their memories of working on the film, working with John Travolta and more. How Allan Carr and Robert Sigwood made this musical a film and put money into it despite no studio wanting to back it, having to work with a good number of talents, John Travolta talking about why he wanted Olivia Newton-John to play the role, how Jeff Conaway actually played Danny in Broadway and was understudy for several other roles with the exception of Kinickie. And many more interesting tidbits on the making of the film.
* Additional Scenes: Deleted/Extended/Alternate Scenes with introduction by Randal Kleiser (intro :13 scenes 11:55 - TRT 12:08) - Randal Kleiser explains how footage was recently found in the Paramount vaults. But I have to be truthful and say how much I was in awe to see the brilliant camerawork but to see how the choreography and just literally everything look quite smooth on film.

And surprisingly watching this again 30-years-later and as the Director and even producers have said in the featurette, they were able to pull things off today that probably wouldn't happen now. Quite a bit of sexual lingo but overall, the lyrics of the songs to the mannerisms of the characters is what made things look genuine.

It's interesting to read some of the critical reviews from people who did not grow up with the film but are more familiar with today's musicals and drawing comparisons to "High School Musical" and making the comment of how HSM utilized real teenagers for high school life and that "GREASE" utilized 20 to 30-something year olds to play teenagers. I don't think any of us who watched it back then ever thought about the age being an issue for the film. What we saw were popular talent at that time in a movie musical and the film became a success. Even today, I have no reservations of the talents playing their roles. They did a fantastic job!

For me, John Travolta was the hottest star coming off with "Welcome Back, Kotter" and then doing "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" in 1977 and Olivia Newton-John was just one of the most beautiful female solo singers at the time. Both had unique chemistry and the film was well-cast that I felt everything just went smoothly on the final cut.

You really have to give a big applause to Allan Carr and Robert Stigwood for taking the chance of bringing a musical to film but making sure its adapted well for the screen. Sure we see musicals now but during that time, there was no studio support. And because the film was enjoyed by audiences, the film is definitely ingrained into America's pop culture.

Also, I was just amazed through the featurettes and learning how the choreography was done. Because there were so many people utilized in the dancing segments, Patricia Birchwood wanted to make things come alive but to alter a talent's own personal dance to make it look right on film. And of course, Bill Butler, to capture what Birchwood wanted on film, the amount of cutting from scene to scene showing opposing points of view on a song like "Summer Nights" to the ending theme, it was indeed "electrifying"!

Overall, this Blu-ray release of "GREASE" is just the definitive version to own. To watch this classic film in High Definition and to see the magnificent picture quality really brings out the vibrant colors of the film, the energy and beauty of the beach sunset to showcasing the life of youth of the late 50's. The DolbyTrueHD 5.1 audio makes the music come alive and last, there are many special features included that will help people remember and celebrate such a wonderful movie musical.

Again, this is the true definitive version of "GREASE" to own! I was just stunned by how magnificent this film looked and how much clearer and alive the music sounded in High Definition. I highly recommend this release!B000GBEWHA30A2ZR6VJUMS5V73A2ZR6VJUMS5V73M. Once it got going then it was ok.DescriptionJohn Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!Amazon.com essential videoRiding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.
The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoyAmazon.com

Stills from Grease (Click for larger image)

B000NIVJHMDirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition)B000001FDKGrease (Original 1978 Motion Picture Soundtrack)B000BNX4MCFerris Bueller's Day Off Bueller...Bueller... We own the complete 5 seasons and dearly love B5. Two stars because only two movies are worth watching. And Martin Sheen is TERRIBLE. Gawd, who cast him in this? He walks around like his contacts don't fit and can't decide what kind of accent he should have. Painful to watch. Product DescriptionStudio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 08/17/2004 Run time: 469 minutes Rating: NrAmazon.comThe Babylon 5 pilot movie The Gathering was originally broadcast in 1993 a full year ahead of the regular show. A somewhat dull tale of an attempt to assassinate Koch, the Vorlon ambassador to B5, the feature served to introduce Commander Jeffery Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Security Chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) as well as familiarize the audience with the unique environment of a five-mile-long space station in the year 2257. Missing many of the main cast, and suffering from a leaden pace and mediocre music score, series creator J Michael Straczynski later improved The Gathering by tightening the cut for a special edition (the version released on DVD), adding some deleted character moments and commissioning a new score from series composer Christopher Franke.
Four new TV movies were part of the deal to syndicate Babylon 5. In the Beginning is a prelude set 10 years before Babylon 5, telling the story of the Earth-Minbari war. Told retrospectively, many of the mysteries revealed gradually in the main series are recounted, making the show a collection of spoilers for newcomers while adding little for established fans. It is effective to see events only previously talked about, and enjoyable to have most of the main cast playing younger versions of themselves. River of Souls is a self-contained adventure featuring a return of the Soul Hunters from Season One, while Thirdspace offers a spectacular Lovecraftian space opera which slots into the saga after the end of the Shadow War. A Call to Arms is the most important of the TV films, laying the ground for the future TV series Crusade. Set five years after the Shadow War, it tells the story of a Drahk revenge attack on Earth. A final showcase for Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, the story fits between fifth-season episodes "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light." The cliffhanger ending sets the scene for new starship Excalibur to boldly go on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds and find a cure for the Shadow virus infecting the Earth. --Gary S. DescriptionPete, a young orphan, runs away to a Maine fishing town with his best friend--a lovable, sometimes invisible dragon named Elliott! When they are taken in by a kind lighthouse keeper, Nora (Helen Reddy), and her father (Mickey Rooney), Elliott's prank playing lands them in big trouble. Then, when crooked salesmen try to capture Elliott for their own gain, Pete must attempt a daring rescue.Amazon.comDisney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. Not for anybody over the age of ten. --Tom Keogh B00004R9A4Bedknobs and Broomsticks (30th Anniversary Edition)B001JRB16UMary Poppins (45th Anniversary Special Edition)0792839749Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Full Screen Edition)B0015XWU9UThe Sword in the Stone (45th Anniversary Special Edition)B000I0RNUMPuff the Magic Dragon290941Comic Action163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video712532Feature Films712256Animation404276Genres130DVD139452Video712258General712256Animation404276Genres130DVD139452Video16312031Mixed712256Animation404276Genres130DVD139452Video387675011All Titles3003033-6 Years163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video387676011All Titles3003047-9 Years163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video163417General163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video290935Adventure163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video163416Animation163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video727942Orphans300208By Theme163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video300411Comedy163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video595062Family Films163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video411358Backus, Jim411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411902Barnes, Walter411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video415254Buttons, Red411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416240Callas, Charlie416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418386Conaway, Jeff416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419610Dale, Jim419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438106Morgan, Gary434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435500Marshall, Sean434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444230Rooney, Mickey442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452976Winters, Shelley451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video455452Chaffey, Don455278( C )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579542( P )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video300382All Disney Titles300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video300383Animated Movies300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video4035883-6 Years403586By Age300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video4035907-11 Years403586By Age300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video403592For the Whole Family403586By Age300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video300384Gold Collection300381Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405385011G405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620890111970 - 1979562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1W68TC10NKF0LMy kids' fav movies (age 4-7)R1O3YB2W8N6XHIDisney CollectionR32HQTI20JTBYRfamily flicksR1EDLAJ7EXCJ3C5 Movies: The Letter PR259AQE1JLWG45An 80's child's favorite movies for her childR1DGE84IOBFHB0Take a tour of my childhoodR2CCR1GT0LLZREDISNEY LIMITED ISSUE & GOLD COLLECTION MOVIESRFJCGF4XERYUYThe Best of the Disney Movies (Animated & Filmed)R3A4L2XGJI7MRQT.V.

I highly recommend this release!B00006B1HH30A2ZR6VJUMS5V73A2ZR6VJUMS5V73M. G. Flag23cartBrooksville, Fl. USA32009-04-30GreaseThe beginning of the movie all the heads were cut off, and had a little trouble getting it to start to play. Once it got going then it was ok.Amazon.com essential videoRiding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. While this 2002 DVD release contains retrospective interviews with the cast and director Randal Kleiser, it's unfortunately full screen. As a result, the widescreen dance numbers are instead panned and scanned, destroying the symmetrical, lively choreography. A widescreen version is also available and is highly recommended because without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film has to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times.
Balsness02009-02-15Rose McGowan truly shinesThis movie is definitely a favorite of mine. I have watched this movie numerous time and it never gets old. Rose McGowan is iconic in this role and was born to play Courtney... the rest of the cast does a solid job too. This movie not everyone will enjoy but I know many who do or would if they gave it a chance. Proud to display in my collection. As far as cult favorites go this one takes the cake. If your looking for a oscar movie look elsewhere but if you looking for an enjoyable way to kill a few hours check this out!!!076783230250A28XFMA6TY7DHJA28XFMA6TY7DHJE. Campbell02008-12-22great movie this is a funny and interesting portrayal of gender roles in teenage society. Very insightful and entertaining!076783230221ANCOMAI0I7LVGANCOMAI0I7LVGAndrew EllingtonMulholland Drive12008-09-24This movie will break more than just your jaw...I think that the idea behind `Jawbreaker', no matter how disturbing, is somewhat smart as well. I really would have liked to see better actresses placed in the film. I can only imagine how hilarious this movie might have been if say, it starred Denise Richards and Kirsten Dunst (so brilliant together in `Drop Dead Gorgeous'). Instead, we get Rose McGowan who, lets face it, is little more than a pretty face (and here her face isn't all that pretty).

The film revolves around a prank gone awry. Popular girl Courtney and her friends Julie and Marcia kidnap their best friend Elizabeth on her seventeenth birthday, shove a jawbreaker in her mouth, tape it shut and toss her in the trunk. It's a harmless prank. They're going to stuff her face with pancakes and pretty much make her miserable to commemorate her birthday. But that harmless prank turns deadly when that jawbreaker wares down and gets lodged in Liz's throat, and she dies in Courtney's trunk. The girls panic and Julie wants to tell the police but Courtney is determined not to go to jail for playing a prank so she convinces the girls to help her make it look like Liz was murdered by a strange man. When the school outcast Fern walks in on the girls Courtney decides to offer her Liz's place in their group if she'll keep her mouth shut.

The initial idea (of the whole jawbreaker murder) is quite original. The route they went was not so much (let's make the nerd popular as long as it benefits the group). What really kills the film though is McGowan's ridiculous acting; in fact everyone's performances are downright eye-gouging. The only one who almost scathes by is Rebecca (can't type her last name or my review will get banned); almost.

Rose McGowan isn't comfortable with her character, which is odd, and so she tends to appear like someone trying to be cool and popular instead of someone who is cool and popular. She appears like a wannabe and thus makes her characters `power over others' come off as fake and preposterous. Julie Benz does nothing more than follow McGowan around like a lapdog, and Judy Greer handles her characters transformation with little more than a passing attempt. The film has really no use for men so the performances (and cameos) of actors like Ethan Erickson, Chad Christ and even Marilyn Manson are all borderline ridiculous. Rebecca is the most talented in the bunch and she manages to deliver some sort of saving grace to the film with her conflicted heroine, but even she can't save the film from the evil clutches of McGowan and company.

Like I said, the film also takes a very clichéd approach to the subject matter, an approach that is better left to a Freddie Prince Jr. movie (does he even act anymore), but the fill would have still been watchable had a more convincing villain (I'm telling you, Denise Richards) been cast.076783230253AKMEY1BSHSDG7AKMEY1BSHSDG7J. ArenaWilliamsburg, VA32008-09-23Horrifyingly hilarious!Jawbreaker is a film about teen angst, popularity, deception and manipulation. It is utterly horrifying in that it portrays the desperation of the popular to stay popular and the need of the outcasts to enter their fashionable ranks. But is their delicious perfection all that it seems? How far are they willing to go to stay on top? And what happens when one of those so-called outcasts has to be grudgingly groomed to become one of them -- because she knows that they are covering up the (accidental) murder of a friend?

Jawbreaker is a joyride of a bitchy, biting comedy that will strike a note with everyone who ever attended high school -- no matter what group you found yourself in!

Don't miss Jawbreaker! I'ts an absolute delight!Product DescriptionA DEADLY SWEET BIRTHDAY PRANK LEADS TO COVER-UP BY MAKEOVER IN THIS EDGY AND UNPREDICTABLE COMEDY.Amazon.comRose McGowan vamps it up mercilessly as the "Satan in heels," a teenage-bitch queen whose birthday prank gone terminally wrong leaves her best friend dead, choked to death on a jawbreaker the size of a fist. Rebecca Gayheart, with her sparkling eyes and a smile that could melt an iceberg, is the good girl at heart who becomes a social pariah when she drops out of the group, trading her plunging necklines for librarian-lite sweaters and long skirts. Jawbreaker wants nothing less than to be the Heathers of its generation, but only intermittently hits the mark, such as when McGowan turns a mousy nobody into the next big thing, a slutty tease whose craving for attention soon challenges McGowan's supremacy. "She's evil," someone finally realizes, "and she's only in high school!" That's unfortunately the best Darren Stein's film gets. For all its catty talk and surface glamour, it's a flat, broadly directed satire that never lives up to its evocative title. Features an appearance by teen rock punks the Donnas as the prom band. --Sean AxmakerB00004W4UDThe Craft (Special Edition)B00180OU4SHeathers - 20th High School Reunion EditionB00005J761Sugar & Spice0780628306Drop Dead Gorgeous6305428425Romy and Michele's High School Reunion163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video720556Black Comedy163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291190School Days163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291120Teen163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081760114-for-3 Comedy1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video409870Adi, Alexandra409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417688Christ, Chad416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418386Conaway, Jeff416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424608Gayheart, Rebecca424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425882Greer, Judy424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425974Grier, Pam424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430598Kane, Carol430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430738Katt, William430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436438McGowan, Rose434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447012Smart, Alexis444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video573628All Sony Pictures Titles516494Sony Pictures Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579530( J )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2JLZT9H6R6RYMBest of the Best Campy or NotR17092ZWYK28RHMy Teen Movies!!R3UG3CMMFTTCDBDisasterpiece Theater Part 8R7UM05O9MVDOWteen girl moviesR9AT7IWYYG3BIFilmgasms of 1999RSSAXYPDXLAEYRose McGowan on DVD!R1W3ZYL7JRPJVKMovies I own and LOVE!!!R2LTZBKSK30MDUMust see Chick flicks from the 90sR2UXSIWN3OAGW1best dark comedysRO5JU9VMZAFT3My very best movies ever.!B00003CWTLhttp://www.amazon.com/Man-Moon-Jim-Carrey/dp/B00003CWTL%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00003CWTL7763http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41W4ASA4FAL._SL75_.jpg7552http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41W4ASA4FAL._SL160_.jpg160110http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41W4ASA4FAL.jpg475327http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41W4ASA4FAL._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41W4ASA4FAL._SL75_.jpg7552http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41W4ASA4FAL._SL160_.jpg160110http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41W4ASA4FAL.jpg475327Jim CarreyDanny DeVitoGerry BeckerGreyson Erik PendryBrittany Colonna2.35:1R (Restricted)DVDUNI DIST CORP. He was REALLY different, many times very offensive, sometimes very unfunny....but always extremely interesting and certainly unique.

Jim Carrey shows us once again how comedians can be such good dramatic actors. Carrey is outstanding in this role, and perfect for it. The rest of the cast is good, too, from Danny DeVito to Paul Giamatti to Courtney Love.

Right from the beginning of this movie one sees how original it is, and how original Kaufman was as a comedian. His routines, antics and put-ons are so realistically done that no thinks they are just that. Unfortunately, his "jokes" don't always go over so well, aren't appreciated by most audiences and he is not always the most likable entertainer you will ever see. That means - be forewarned - that there are a number of unpleasant scenes in this film. You have to really appreciate Kauffman's absurd humor and to appreciate Carrey's great portrait of this man.

On multiple viewings (I've seen it four times) I liked this film even more than the first time, even though I knew the surprises. I don't know of any comedian - to this day - who deliberately tried to annoy his audience or truly liked it when his audience hated him. I cannot believe he had the nerve to do the things he did. In summary, this is a fascinating biography, to say the least.
B00003CWTL50A20NT61R8V81YBA20NT61R8V81YBDamon SmithMrCoffin23USA02009-03-06This is why Jim Carrey is the best! The reason I think Jim Carrey is the best actor is because he can practicly immatate anyone so well, and almost flawless! This is one of Jim Carrey's masterpieces! Its also based on a true story. But at the end of the credits I noticed they have a qoute saying...

"while this picture is based on a true story, some characters have been composited or invented, and a number of incidents fictionalized."

Thats why sometime in the first 20 minutes of the film, Andy's friend says "don't believe everything you hear." :D

I'm not too familiar with Andy Kaufman but I knew the controversal things about him and what he does because my mother was just explaining to me a few days ago about the guy. This movie is a great insight of Andy if you want to know about him a little more first. Then check out some of his old comedy stuff.

I must admit, Jim Carrey's acting is crazy sometimes. There are times when you don't even tell if Jim Carrey is actually a bad actor of a good actor in a film. Hes just so good at what he does in movies. Weather is Comedy or drama films. Jim Carrey could fool some people easily by thinking that he was in a terrible film but really it could of just been an act all along and it was meant to be terrible. Man On The Moon also gives a good insight about Jim Carrey and how irrelevent he can be in movies but I meant that in a good way. What I am trying to say is that I think Jim Carrey knew what he was doing all along in his latest movie Yes Man or even The Number 23 (because I know there were some complaining about that movie.), and in his newer film I Love You Philip Morris (the gay movie) that has not been released yet but I think it is coming to the theater this summer. I'm sure he just likes to get everyone pumped up as part of the show too. Make some controversal movies every once in a while to make people think. Jim Carrey's comic genius is actually kind of scary sometimes, LOL. But thats what is great about the guy. Thats why I love his movies. Man On The Moon is a classic and also underrated. Its one of those movies you need to see twice to get the full picture about the story is actually about. Man On The Moon is a masterpiece!B00003CWTL41A2PBV1899CX3TEA2PBV1899CX3TEC. CRADDOCKCr@$#!!!!Bakersfield12008-04-30There is no real you. Oh yeah, I forgot.Man on the Moon is Jim Carrey's homage to comedian/non-comedian Andy Kaufman. A complex man, Kaufman didn't think of himself as a comedian, but he pioneered a bizarre act--as much conceptual art as comedy--oftentimes trying to provoke as much as get laughs. As his manager asked him:

George Shapiro: Andy, you have to look inside and ask this question: who are you trying to entertain--the audience or yourself?

In the movie George Shapiro is played by Danny Devito, but the real George Shapiro plays Mr. Besserman, who is forced to fire Andy from his comedy club because he isn't funny. He suggests a joke, like: "Why did the Siamese twins move to England? So the other one could drive," but Andy doesn't get it, isn't interested.

But Andy creates a character--foreign man--who does get a good reaction from the audience. He begins as a nervous, inept comedian, does a lousy impression of President Carter, and then says he will now do "the Elvis Presley." He rips off velcro strips on his pants, revealing the studs and sequins of "The King's" Las Vegas bell-bottomed jump suit. To a boom box rendition of "Thus Spake Zarathustra" he dons the costume and transforms. His lip curls. He does a great "Don't Step on My Blue Suede Shoes," then returns to character and nervously thanks the audience. Shapiro ends up managing him, though he is uncertain just where to book him. His break comes when he is cast as Latka Gravas for the sit com Taxi.

Andy is loath to do a sit com, but dictates his terms, one of which is that Tony Clifton must appear in 4 episodes. Clifton turns out to be either the worst Vegas lounge act of all time, or an alter ego of Andy Kaufman, in either case, he is thrown off the set of Taxi, along with his entourage of hookers, after inciting a riot, complete with fisticuffs.

The movie hits all the high and low points of Kaufman's career: Taxi, Tony Clifton, The Mighty Mouse theme lip synch on SNL, the "fight" on Friday's, The Great Gatsby bit, The intergender wrestling, the "fight" on Letterman, touch my cyst, his interest in Transcendental Meditation, his Carnegie Hall performance, complete with The Rockettes, Santa Claus, and an invitation for the entire audience to have milk and cookies, and finally his death from cancer. Or was that just another prank?

Jim Carrey gave a pretty good performance, but overdoes it with the crazy eyes. Kaufman's crazy eyes were just a bit more unsettling. Carrey doesn't have as good a rhythm on the bongos as Kaufman--though his comic timing is impeccable. Jim Carrey has made an entertaining movie, and also let the audience in on the joke, if it was one of Andy's pranks--but that is also the problem. How do you make a movie about a comedian/non-comedian who stretched the whole concept of comedy to include jokes at the expense of his audience? He wasn't always even trying to make the audience laugh. Maybe the joke was just something he and perhaps one or two others could appreciate.

Unlike this movie, whose aim is clearly to entertain. Was it then a failure because it strayed from the path pioneered by Kaufman? And what of Andy Kaufman. Was he serious, or was he putting you on? Even as he was dying of cancer, members of his own family think it may be just another prank. To this day there are people who think he faked his own death and will come back to laugh at our gullibility.

The People vs. Larry Flynt: Also directed by Milos Forman, and also featuring Courtney Love.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Also directed by Milos, and featuring Danny Devito.

Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Deluxe Edition): Great Jim Carrey performance in title role.

The Cable Guy (Full Screen): Great and creepy Jim Carrey performance in title role.

L.A. "I forgot," he says, playing along, though the question of Kaufman's reality is always at issue in Milos Forman's underappreciated Man on the Moon.
The story of Kaufman's quick rise to fame through early appearances on Saturday Night Live and the conceptual stunts that made his club and concert appearances an instant legend in the irony-fueled 1970s and early '80s, Man on the Moon never makes the mistake of artificially delineating Comic Andy from Private Andy. True, we get to see something of his private interest in meditation and some of the flakier extremes of alternative medicine, but even these interludes suggest the presence of an ultimate con behind apparent miracles of transformation.
Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (The People vs. Larry Flynt) allege that transformation was Kaufman's purpose--more than a shtick but less than a destiny. As we see him constantly up the ante on the credibility of his performance personae (the obnoxious nightclub comic Tony Clifton; the insulting, misogynistic professional wrestler), Forman makes it harder and harder to detect Kaufman's sleight of hand. But it's there, always there, always the transcendent Andy watching the havoc he creates and the emotions he stirs.
Carrey is magnificent as Kaufman, re-creating uncannily detailed comedy pieces etched in the memory of anyone who remembers the real Andy. But while Carrey's mimicry of Kaufman is flawless and funny, the actor probes much deeper into an enigmatic character who, in life, was often a moving target even for those closest to him. --Tom KeoghB00005JKNCThe MajesticB0009UC7QQThe Truman Show (Special Collector's Edition)B00005JMJGEternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Widescreen Edition)0800141687The Cable Guy (Full Screen)0780618556Dumb and Dumber163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video899734Jim Carrey899692Comedy Stars163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291259Biography291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video413646Bonerz, Peter411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416722Carrey, Jim416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418386Conaway, Jeff416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424834Giamatti, Paul424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427672Henner, Marilu426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428082Hirsch, Judd426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430598Kane, Carol430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433384Letterman, David432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433830Lloyd, Christopher432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434178Love, Courtney432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434636MacDonald, Norm434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video445454Schiavelli, Vincent444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451020Vito, Danny De450514( V )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456814Forman, Milos456580( F )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355777011Milos Forman355751011By Director355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355865011Czech New Wave355859011By Theme355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video297864DTS295214Fully Loaded DVDs251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357278011Biography357275011By Theme357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279381All Universal Studios Titles14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279411Comedy14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video14279421Drama14279371Universal Studios Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579536( M )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - With her lengthy, well-toned figure, large-bust, innocuously mischievous attitude and grab-bag lexicon of me-generation valley slang, the character of Elvira has a universal and timeless appeal. As an aspiring folklorist and an individual deeply interested in the structure of storytelling, it is evident that the Elvira persona has certain archetypal elements that help to make the character more than the sum of her corny one-liners and large chest. As initiated from the manner in which the children of the town react to her, she represents the deep adolescent fantasy for an experienced woman whom can connect to them of their level: a strange mixture of one-dimensional romantic yearning, boyish sexual craving and the desire for non-threateningly lighthearted fun. She symbolizes an undeveloped ideal of womanhood perfected for the boys and a source of strength for the girls of the town. The other adults have trouble with her for the same reasons. In the end, however, her film cannot move pass its more campy ingredients. The end result is that while Elvira is infinitely interesting, her film is limited by how weak a showcase it is for her talents. Nearly everything is tailored to an adolescent mindset and although it is a straightforward comedy, only those who can still process information with the mind of a young person will be able to enjoy the nonsense. Fortunately, I have such ability and found the film to be a delightful charmer.

Best Quote:
Bob Redding: How's your head?
Elvira: I haven't had any complaints. Tired of hosting cheap horror films and being harassed at work, Elvira dreams of performing her own show in Las Vegas. As luck would have it, she receives a telegram after quitting her job notifying her that her great aunt has passed away and can she come to Falwell, Massachusetts for the reading of the will. As Elvira says "I didn't even know I had a good aunt much less a great one!" Thinking she will be picking up a big inheritance to pay for her show in Vegas, she sets off for the quiet, conservative town of Falwell. Unfortunately, her car breaks down when she arrives and the reading of the will doesn't quite go as expected. Now she must begin looking for a job or sell her newly acquired home otherwise she will lose the showroom in Vegas and her dreams will be shattered. If that weren't enough, she has to do battle with an evil uncle who wants her great aunt's recipe book which holds valuable magical power, the town's old bities who want her gone and a jealous rival who wants her new boyfriend. BalasubramaniamGDBIndia12009-01-19Best of both worldsThe twin pack edition is a blessing to war fans. The Dirty Dozen was one of the key flims of its time to revive war films, set with a very different war back drop, supported cast , click editing, supporting screen play brings nostalgic memories to war movie lovers. Both the films dont let you down but show how better the second movie looks technically , and mistakes made up on the first movie. Lee Marvin plays a typical role with ease , the cast and the plot key to both the exciting ends to both the moviesB000EU1Q5O41A1NZLRAZJGD99WA1NZLRAZJGD99WKimoHonolulu, HI United States12007-12-12Good Continuation of the Dirty Dozen Series.Although not quite as good as the original Lee Marvin "Dirty Dozen" these two are well worth the price and are a good continuation of the series. If your on this page I'm sure you know about the film The Dirty Dozen. That likeable tough-guy WWII film was a box office success back in 1967 but it seems few people today know that it inspired three sequels. Yes the sequels were all roughly made 20 years after and for TV but three sequels did follow. The first sequel "The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission" was released in 1985 with Lee Marvin returning. The film must have brought a good crowd to the TV as two more sequels were soon made: "Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission" and "The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission" both which are featured here in this double feature ("Next Mission" is availabe in the Special 2 Disc Edition of the first Dirty Dozen)

Lee Marvin opting out of these last two entries (perhapes by his death) was replaced by Telly Savalas who reprises his role from the original Dirty Dozen. To be honest I wasn't all that hot with the second Dirty Dozen film "Next Mission". It was alright entertainment for a TV made film but I doubt I will be watching it much. I however was surprised by how much I liked these other two sequels with Telly Savalas. I'm not sure but Savalas, even in his old age, has a screen presence to him that makes these sequels very enjoyable. The plots arn't all that enthrawling or great but Savalas makes these films worth checking out. Savalas in each sequel is surrounded by a cast that many seasoned film enthusiests will recognize such as Bo Svenson (Walkign Tall Parts 2 & 3), Thom Matthews (Return of the Living Dead I & II), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters 1 & 2), amongst others. I had a great time playing "spot that actor".

For TV made sequels these are pretty entertaining. Sure the plots lack but Savalas and the rest of the cast keeps the films trucking along. The production value on these films are also great considering the hinderence fo being shown on TV. If your fan of the film The Dirty Dozen then I highly recommend picking up it's now rarely seen TV made sequels. Now only if they would release the short lived 80's Dirty Dozen television series to DVD...

When I first ordered this DVD I was expecting a "flipper" (a double sided disc with a film on each side) like most other MGM double features. MGM however was nice enough to have each film on a seperate disc. I like this because it helps prevent against smudges and scratches. Both films are in Full Screen. They were filmed for TV so they were never shot in widescreen. There are no special features. I actually thought I would never see these little seen TV sequels on DVD so I thank MGM for the simple fact of releasing them.

On a side note that has nothing to do with the films, I found it an annoyance that all three sequels have differences in the titles. "The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission" has no "The" in the subtitle. "Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission" has no "The" before Dirty. "The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission" has "The" in both places. You think the person in charge of titling would have found some uniformity between them but oh well...it's just a minor thing :-)B000EU1Q5O412A2F7CCPK4QL359A2F7CCPK4QL359Bennet PomerantzBennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLDSeabrook, Maryland122006-06-09Dozen TV redeuxFirst there was the classic Dirty Dozen. then Lee Marvin agaonm starred as Major John Reismanin for 1985 made-for-TV sequel The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission (which is on the new two disk version of the Dirty Dozen)

1n 1987, Marvin's Maj. John Reisman was replaced by (1967 Dozen cast member) Telly Savalas's Major Wright for two further TV movies which this collection is made of

Savalas's Wright tries to act similar to Marvin's Reisman. It is still twelve convicts sent on a secret mission. In both TV movies on this DVD collection, Ernest Borgnine cameos as General Worden (the role he created for the original Dozen movie)

What annoys me is the LOVE BOAT style casting these movies have. In Deadly Mission, the film has such actors as Randall "tex" Cobb, Vince Edwards (Ben Casey), Bo Svenson (Walking Tall) and the Van Patten Brothers (James & Vincent). In Fatal Mission, the actors are Jeff Conaway (Taxi,Babylon 5), Alex Cord (Airwolf), Erik Estrada (CHiPs), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, tv's OZ), Heather Thomas (The Fall Guy) and Boxer Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini.

The other problem with the film, when it comes to guns, battle sounds--Those are three time higher than the dialog. So you have to turn up the sound to hear what they say and turn down the sound for the war scenes

Now other than that, these two TV movies are great work for TV movies. The action is there. The plots is there. It works very well as a set of TV movies brought to DVD.

Bennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLDProduct DescriptionThe Dirty Dozen: The Fatal MissionIn case of defeat the Nazis are setting up a Fourth Reich in the Middle East.

I highly recommend this release!B001AXU1CS30A2ZR6VJUMS5V73A2ZR6VJUMS5V73M.

I highly recommend this release!B001AXU1BY30A2ZR6VJUMS5V73A2ZR6VJUMS5V73M.
