She literally pulled the rug from under Lansbury and took this role from her. The resulting film is a disaster. The film was panned by critics on its release and did poorly at the box office. I loved Lucy on her television show. It was a terrible thing she did to Lansbury, though the great film actress had the last laugh. While both women were nominated for numerous Emmy's, only Lansbury was nominated for an Academy Award. Her film performances are exceptional and quite memorable. "Mame" was not nominated for one Academy Award that season. It received two nominations for a Golden Globe from the foreign press (Arthur and Ball) as they loved Lucille Ball. Needless to say, she did not win. If you love Lucy, then watch some of her television work from the 1950's when she was queen of comedy. As to her performance in this stinker, its simply awful.B000O76ZR620A3I9PUR2E3BSJCA3I9PUR2E3BSJCRuth AndersonBook Reviewer12009-03-15Falls flat...I'm a big fan of the Rosalind Russell flick Auntie Mame, so after viewing Mame I've gotta say it can't help but feel like a redundant, paler imitation of the earlier classic. Lucy gives her all here, but it's really hard to get past the fact that she seems too old for the part - and starting out with the starkly dark, Rosalind Russell-like wig doesn't help matters. I have to think if she'd played the role on stage she could've sold the part more convincingly. Since this is based on the Broadway musical, you do get to hear some pretty good tunes like "We Need a Little Christmas" and "Bosom Buddies," even if they are sung really badly. The latter does transcend it's ear-assaulting delivery because watching Ball perform it with Bea Arthur, who plays Vera, Mame's best friend, is really kind of fun. Robert Preston also makes a pretty good turn as Mame's love interest Beauregard, and he gets to sing "Loving You" (written especially for the film), which is a real treat since he's far and away the only member of the cast that can actually sing. Mame clocks in at just over two hours, but it felt more like three or four. Despite the frenetic pace of the production numbers, the movie seems to lag (this is a problem I have with a lot of the musicals from the late sixties/early seventies - the come off too heavy-handed for me which bogs down the pace of the story). The DVD has a trailer and a featurette entitled "Lucky Mame" which is basically a glorfied, really long trailer. While Lucy has some good moments here (the fox hunt scene comes to mind), she is never quite able to match the magic touch Rosalind Russell brought to the character of Mame. In summary - this may be worth watching once if you're a fan of Robert Preston, or want to see Bea Arthur positively steal every scene she appears in. Other than that, skip this one and check out the superior Auntie Mame.DescriptionLucille Ball plays Auntie mame, loving life and living it to the hilt with her nephew and assorted eccentrics in tow. Robert Preston, Beatrice Arthur and Jerry Herman's smashing Broadway score add pizazz. Year: 1974 Director: Gene Saks Starring: Lucille Ball. Robert Preston, Bea ArthurAmazon.comThe 1974 film version of Mame stars legendary Lucille Ball and is based on the 1966 hit Broadway musical, not the 1958 movie. When 10-year-old Patrick Dennis's father dies, he is sent to live with his eccentric Auntie Mame. Mame may know nothing about being a parent, but she's got love and spontaneity in spades, and Patrick blooms in the time spent with her. Though Miss Ball seems sadly miscast when Mame begins (she's too old and can't sing), by the time the movie reaches the famous foxhunt scene when Mame accidentally wins the hunt, and in turn the heart of gallant Beauregard Burnside, you start to believe Lucy is Mame.
Reprising her Broadway role (for which she won a Tony), Bea Arthur plays Mame's boozy pal Vera Charles. Songs include the now-classic "We Need a Little Christmas" and "Bosom Buddies" plus "Loving You," sung by Robert Preston's Beau and written for this movie. --Dana Van NestB00006FDCAAuntie MameB00005JL1PHello, Dolly! The two then end up on a romantice rollercoaster ride that ends up to be an expose of the dating game. PolhemusBook CollectorLA32008-08-14House calls for whoopee"House Calls" is a delightful romantic comedy that focuses on prevalent social issues. Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson have a wonderful chemistry together. Art Carney plays to caricature the bumbling bureacrat and surgeon who is director of an unsuccesful hospital. Richard Benjamin, so popular in 1978 when the film was released, was charming as Matthau's foil.

Jackson and Matthau first meet when Jackson is a patient of an ancient medical practice administered by Carney's character. Matthau, a top surgeon and recent widower beset by younger social climbers seeking his attentions, rectifies the old treatment with a simple medical procedure.

They next meet as debaters on a television program. After all the chirpies, he is intrigued by a woman who is closer to his age and can think. How they get together is a hilarious scene and a natural development of a relationship, instead of his usual flowers, dinner, overnight roll in the sack, home the next morning.

The title refers, of course, to the house calls he makes to his younger dates, not in any way related to doctor visits. This film is enjoyable with a definite nod toward compatibility and marriage. According to my brother, "It's a pretty good movie," expressed with approval. Of course, I agree.

4.5 stars (Art Carney was annoying.)

B0007QJ1ZW50A3F5PI5IGUOJ5JA3F5PI5IGUOJ5JC. M. Guzowsky02008-02-23DVD20080223-2Another enjoyable comedy. I think that Genda Jackson and Walter Mathou are a very good comedy team; they work well together. This is another movie that is rarely seen on any of the movie channels which is unfortnate. ConnersMusic/Movie LoverElkhorn, NE02009-05-14Walter Matthau At His Heart Warming BestIn most roles, Walter Matthau is the wise cracking, cantancerous character who leaves us a bit perplexed but loving his character anyway. In Kotch, Mr. Matthau plays a wise, loving grandfather trying to connect with his son and daughter-in-law's impatience with this old man whom she deems ready to be put "out to pasture". Not only is Mr. Matthau's character not ready for the nursing home, he's more than ready to enjoy the rest of his life to the fullest. This is a wonderfully warm, sometimes sentimental, sometimes funny depiction of what life could be like in later years and Walter Matthau, as usual, does the role justice. B00020X87K40A2R6RA8FRBS608A2R6RA8FRBS608Matthew G. Sherwinlast seen screaming at Amazon customer service02009-04-27good--despite a somewhat messy plotKotch combines drama, suspense and comedy to make a good picture. The acting is very convincing; and the choreography shines along with the fine cinematography. The plot moves along rather well for the first half hour or so and then it unfortunately slows down with an unnecessary complication or two to the plot. On the other hand, the quality of the print is very good and there's plenty of excellent character development.

When the movie starts, we meet kindly old Joseph Kotchner (Walter Matthau) who loves to live his life revolving around his two or three year old grandson Duncan (played by alternately by Donald and Dean Kowalski). Kotchner means well; but he always seems to be getting on the fragile nerves of his daughter-in-law Wilma (Felicia Farr) and sometimes his son Gerald (Charles Aidman) agrees with Wilma that Kotchner is causing problems in the household. When Kotchner thinks nothing of patting a young child on the tushie to indicate that she should "get along" after he dries her off from the kiddie pool, the mothers overreact and cause quite a stink. It's clear that Kotchner just doesn't fit into his environment.

It's also not long before Wilma convinces Gerald to send Joseph to a supposedly fancy retirement "village;" but Joseph Kotchner will have none of that--especially when he must be tested for psychological problems! Joseph sneaks away and travels north by bus; and he enjoys a little adventure along his way. Meanwhile, the young babysitter Erica Herzenstiel (Deborah Winters), who started to care for Duncan when Wilma couldn't take Joseph any more, becomes pregnant and is banished from the Kotchner household by the ever so uptight Wilma.

Eventually Joseph Kotchner and Erica meet up in Palm Springs; Joseph goes looking for Erica because he knows that a young pregnant woman with no money may have problems making it on her own. Erica accepts Kotchner's offer to live with him in a small rented house--at least for now. Kotchner accepts Erica for the human being that she is; he doesn't make moral judgments. He only empathizes with her situation.

It may seem like I've told you the whole story up until this point but with the several extra plot details I mentioned I can assure you that I've already left out some things to make this a good movie for you to watch if you choose to watch it. Moreover, from here the plot can go anywhere. Will Erica keep her child or give it up for adoption since she has no money? What about Wilma and Gerald--how will they find Gerald's father? And, even if Erica wants to keep her baby, her straight laced and legal guardian brother Peter may force her to sign papers that make her give away the baby when it is born. Will Erica sign the papers or fight with Peter? Watch and find out!

The DVD has no bonus features; I would have liked some commentary but we get nothing more than "scene selection" and subtitles. Sigh.

Overall, Kotch is a good film that could have been great had they not created a plot with unnecessary twists and turns. However, the acting is excellent and therefore I do recommend this film for fans of the actors in this movie. It's also a great look at what the early 1970s looked like as people ride around in cars the size of boats, own avocado color washer and dryer machines and wear the clothing that was popular at the time.
B00020X87K41A1POFVVXUZR3IQA1POFVVXUZR3IQz hayesplano,texas12009-01-21Comic and poignant tale about an unlikely 'couple'"Kotch" marks Jack Lemmons' directorial debut and stars Walter Matthau as Joe Kotcher, an old but sprightly widower whose eccentricities drive both his son and daughter-in-law up the wall. When they decide to send him to a retirement home somewhere in California, Joe takes off, literally hopping on a bus and heading up to Seattle for a while before coming home. He misses his grandson, a cherubic baby, but realises he doesn't fit in with his son's family, and is unwanted. Joe eventually does find some purpose to his life when he befriends an unwed pregnant teenager, Erica [Deborah Winters] and the pair embark on some hilarious escapades, discovering friendship and companionship along the way.

There are many comic scenes in this movie - Matthau plays the eccentric Joe Kotcher admirably well, earning himself an Oscar nomination for his effort. Deborah Winters shines as the confused and lonely pregnant teen who finds an unlikely ally in Joe. Both are sort of social outcasts who form a genuine rapport with each other.

The funny scenes are balanced with moments of true poignancy, especially when Joe reminisces about his deceased wife and their lives together. This is a heartwarming story that is not merely about an old man but about finding hope and purpose in life.B00020X87K30ANCOMAI0I7LVGANCOMAI0I7LVGAndrew EllingtonMulholland Drive12008-12-15I lacks that special something that would make it more than average...Jack Lemmon may very well be my favorite comedic actor ever. Walter Matthau, which annoying at times, has always been a good screen partner for Lemmon. With that thought in mind I became intrigued at the idea of Lemmon directing Matthau. I was a little hesitant knowing that this wasn't an all out comedy (it does try to be humorous, but there is a big difference) but I figured that since Lemmon has shown he has some dramatic chops (he fairs better in films like `Save the Tiger' than he does in `Missing', but that's for another review) he could pull this off.

The problem with `Kotch' is not that it is overly saccharine, but that it is barely much of anything. Lemmon could not find the balance between too much and too little, and so he opts for too little, the result being a major lapse in emotional connection. When `Kotch' tries to reach for the emotional it fails drastically since we have no connection with the characters involved.

That's my take at least.

The film tells of retired salesman Joseph Kotch. He's older and somewhat `hard to get along with', but he loves his grandson Duncan. He lives with his son and daughter-in-law and wares on their nerves and so, when he feels as though he's had enough he leaves. He leaves and moves in with the young pregnant Erica (Duncan's former babysitter who had been fired because of Kotch). Erica and Kotch form a relationship of sorts, although the film never really allows us to get to know them entirely. This is partly due to the spotty acting from the pair. Matthau received an Oscar nomination for this performance, and at times I understand why, but as a whole this is a very uneven, or should I say uneventful performance. It is subtle to a fault, never engaging the audience the way that it could have. Matthau was never the strongest actor around, but he's been better than this, that is for sure.

I also wish that Lemmon had directed himself in this film.

I'll give `Kotch' a C. It's the type of film that you can watch and enjoy to a degree but it is not a film you will be racing around to tell your friends about or be jumping at the bit to watch again. If you are a long standing fan of Matthau then you will most likely enjoy seeing him play against type, forfeiting the `grumpy slapstick' role for a slower and more tender role, but sadly he just doesn't reach the levels of emotional impact that his character demanded. When you look back at the amazing year 1971 was for the lead actor category it upsets me that Matthau was nominated instead of marvelous performances by the likes of Al Pacino (`The Panic at Needle Park') or Malcolm McDowell (`A Clockwork Orange').

Alas, Oscar rarely recognizes the `best'.B00020X87K50A1IPGSKANWKY0UA1IPGSKANWKY0UMrs. Sophie S. Fascinating stuff! The behind-the-scenes honchos (and playwright Ken Ludwig, in particular, whose comic "masterpiece" borrows a central plot device right out of an old "I Love Lucy" episode!)--are so wrapped up in their self-importance that don't seem to know--or care--how ludicrous they sound dissing their star on camera. Still, one big question goes unasked--or answered: What was Burnett thinking when she signed on for this turkey??? From all available evidence, there were more laughs in her weakest TV sketch than in this entire overblown production. Ironically, one of Burnett's most crowd-pleasing on-stage moments in the documentary comes when a backstage technical snafu forces her to break character and simply chat with the audience until the glitch is fixed. What a pro! (This review is based on VHS version.)076702446X4132003-04-06A well documentary and someone should be embarrassed...The film went into unexpected details about the whole Broadway process. What is most interesting is the arrogance of the playwright: a man who seemed obsessed with the thought of being embarrassed by actors who apparently were not treating his masterpiece properly. Well he need not have worried; the man's own gross behavior was an embarrassment and actually difficult to watch. Unfortunately I did not have access to DVD version; I look forward to seeing the commentary.076702446X53AH9HUP8MOICGHAH9HUP8MOICGHpaulyboypaulyboynycNew York, NY United States32002-10-03Two films in one...Chris' review has it right: this DVD contains one of the best uses for a Commentary track yet devised.
The film itself is a feast for any theater fan. DA Pennebaker has complete access to the actors, playwright, director and producers during the rehearsal process for the play, both out-of-town in Boston, and then during its entire Broadway run. After seeing it, many may wonder how it could ever be worthwhile producing a play, but that's always been true of working in the theater: you don't have to be crazy, but it sure helps.
As for the DVD commentary, it literally gives you 2 films for the price of one. There is so much more information about the making of the play, and of the participants' true feelings about each other after the fact, that it almost could have been used as the actual voiceover track for the film. I watch this DVD repeatedly, and most of the time, I turn on the commentary track. It's so much more juicy, it makes the on-camera backstabbing seem pleasant by comparison.076702446X5282001-04-12God Bless HerGod bless Carol Burnett.
The fact that she was saddled with a mediocre play, a mediocre playwright, and a mediocre director did not ruffler her professional feathers.
No matter what crap she contends with, she is calm, cool, and funny.
The playwright is a pretentious bore who can go and write Feydeau till he is blue in the face.076702446X512A2NX99GVAX4TRPA2NX99GVAX4TRPChristopher J. JarmickWord LoverSeattle, Wa. USA132000-12-20One of the Best DVDs Commentary Tracks EVER.Moon Over Broadway co-directed by legendary documentary director D.A. PENNEBAKER and his wife Chris Hegedus, is a behind the scenes documentary of the making of the Broadway Show Moon over Buffalo which starred Phillip Bosco, and Carol Burnett and was written by Ken Ludwig. From the announcement of the play being produced, to the beginning of rehearsal, to the disasterous Boston run, to the opening on Broadway. The access to the creative process the film-makers got is pretty amazing and what they captured is a rare behind the scenes warts and all glimpse of how a Broadway show is shaped. It doesn't take us long to realize we seem to be watching a train wreck occurring in slow motion.
Well things perhaps don't turn out as bad as you might believe. The show did wind up being moderately successful and audiences seemed to enjoy this bit of theatrical fluff.
Particularly interesting is the inter-play between the writer Ludwig, director Tom Moore, and the stars. There's a few truly candid moments caught with the producer and some of the show's backers as well. Being privvy to the whole process is a fascinating and educational experience.
But if you are lucky enough to have the DVD of the film, we are from over. As Paul Harvey would say... and then there's The Rest of the Story. . . .
The DVD has a commentary track that is no holds barred and reveals much more than the film ever could. The commentaries from the various actors, directors and producers, two to three years after the show closed, and a year or so after the documentary was released are remarkable frank, candid and revealing. Carol Burnett does contribute (via phone calls) to the commentary track as well. You'll gain even more insight and realize how deep wounds go by re-watching the film with it's invaluable commentary.
The movie is very good. The DVD package is remarkable.
Chris Jarmick Author of The Glass Cocoon with Serena F. Holder - A steamy cyber thriller. Available January 2001. Please order today. Thank You.DescriptionHailed as "irresistible" by the New York Times, Moon Over Broadway is a no-holds barred, behind-the scenes look at the making of the Broadway comedy, Moon Over Buffalo, starring TV sensation Carol Burnett. Revealing what really goes on before the curtainAmazon.comIn 1995, Carol Burnett returned to Broadway after an absence of three decades to costar in Ken Ludwig's comedy, Moon over Buffalo. Legendary documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker and his wife, Chris Hegedus, enjoyed extraordinary access to capture the nuts and bolts of mounting a Broadway play in this video equivalent of a backstage pass. It is more entertaining than the strained farce we glimpse onstage.
Like Pennebaker's cinéma vérité masterworks, the filmmakers do not impose themselves on the proceedings. There is no narration. The cameras record the process, from the introductory press conference to the anxious anticipation of the opening night reviews.
The play's director, Tom Moore, certainly has his hands full. Ludwig (who hit it big with the play Lend Me a Tenor) bemoans what the actors are doing to his words. "It's like a pact with the devil, having to cast stars," he complains. He must massage the actors' egos (the play's ingenue dislikes the picture of herself displayed outside the theater) and assuage their insecurities. Observe how he deftly and delicately reins in Burnett, who initially falls back on shtick to get a laugh. In one tense moment, Philip Bosco, Burnett's esteemed costar, becomes flustered when he believes his input is not appreciated. "Don't you want the benefit of our years of experience, of our sense of comedy?" he demands of Moore. Moon over Broadway is just the ticket for theater buffs. --Donald LiebensonB000UAE7NGShow Business - The Road to BroadwayB001VRDRFGNext to Normal (Original Broadway Cast)B000H5U5S0The Making of "Miss Saigon"B000MKXF1OStagedoorB0014IC31GCompany163452General508532Documentary404276Genres130DVD139452Video1283462011Music & Performing Arts3425661Docurama518928Series & Studios508532Documentary404276Genres130DVD139452Video511448Documentary508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video722783011General AAS508528Musicals & Performing Arts404276Genres130DVD139452Video413776Bosco, Philip411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video415068Burnett, Carol411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418408Connell, Jane416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357278011Biography357275011By Theme357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357284011Documentaries357275011By Theme357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579536( M )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR24JIN61NIU9KFTheater Documentaries10P6V3GMGPUERA Care-Package for the Student ActorN4OB51VLO3TFDr Bob's Arts & Entertainment Collection: Broadway Drama2AOZOSN2FD14ENonmusical Stage Productions on DVD and Video1E3KM0IFFIXLGLive Musical Theatre on DVD2SEN1Y5ZZNX1AYou're a Broadway fan? BannoHarrisburg, PA USA62004-11-13Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde DVD ReviewThe Story
Dr. Jacks is a perfume scent maker. But he's also a scientist. One day he discovers that one of his long lost relatives was the infamous Dr. Jekyll. When he tries the formula to try to perfect it, he unleashes his alter ego, Ms. Hyde. Now he must try to find a way to reverse the curse before its too late and she takes his body and his job.

My Review
I had seen this a while back on tv. Not completely in full, but most of the film. So recently i found the DVD at my local best buy for 5.99. I bought it with 2 other 5.99 dvds (being The Great White Hype, and The Adventures of Pinnochio). So today i watched it and i rediscovered why i enjoyed the movie so much. Its not a horror film, its a comedy. The acting i thought was pretty good and the effects while not the best were decent enough to get the job done. The young woman who plays Helen Hyde, actress Sean Young, is attractive and quite the evil lady. The movie starts as Jacks goes to a relative's will reading. He inherrits his great grandfather's scientifit journals. It is here that he discovers that he's not a Jacks at all, but a Jekyll.

Jacks starts to study the formula closely and discovers that maybe certain things had to be upped before the formula could actually work. What he does is up the estrogine that's inside by 160%. What ends up happening is that its too much, and now instead of turning into an evil hyde man, he becomes a female. Now his life is thrown into chaos as he tries to keep his job going with the perfume place trying to make a new scent, keeping his love life together, and trying to get rid of Hyde. It only gets more difficult when Hyde herself tries to work up a scent and try to take over his life and his job. Funny things happen, and in the end the guy has the last laugh.

Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde is rated PG-13 for slight nudity and sexual inuendo.

DVD Featurs
This is the only bad thing about the dvd. THERE ARE NO FEATURES WHAT SO EVER! Not even a trailer! Its almost like a simple transfer of a widescreen VHS version of the movie onto a DVD-R.

The bottom Line
If your into laughs and just want a good comedy, this one's for you. Just don't expect anything extra other than a decent widescreen transfer of the film.B00021R7DA54AY99WNAYRUIFCAY99WNAYRUIFCHarold RundleOkinawa, Japan62003-05-05Why isn't this great movie on DVD?I won't tell you the story because the other reviews already did. Just know that, though this isn't the best movie ever made, it's not that bad either. The other people who reviewed this movie as poor are way too critical. Relax and have fun. A wacky comedy that's enjoyable and weird. Hopefully, it will be released on DVD.B00021R7DA41A194DFSWA60KO1A194DFSWA60KO1wicked_klownDyer, IN Usa32001-10-28The MovieI first saw this movie on cable and liked it. A friend of mine had this movie and we watched it. It was great. A remake of the original and ten times better. It starts off when Dr. J canges into Ms. H. Well lets just say she reveales some great parts of her body to us. This is a deffinate buy.B00021R7DA3442001-05-24Delightfully campy spoof on the horror bookThis 1995 spoof of the famous "Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde," is disappointing in its comedy, mostly focusing on body references and sexual humor to only produce chuckles and groans.
Tim Daly (Dr. Jacks) tries to find a potion to cure the source of human evil by adding estrogen to the potion. By doing this, he transforms into sexy (and annoying) seductress Helen Hyde (Sean Young) on occasions. Helpless to stop this process of man to woman and woman to man, Dr. Jacks tries to convince his fiancee, Sarah (sexy and always watchable Lysette Anthony) to help him find a cure for taking Helen out for good.
The movie is delightfully campy in the beginning, but in the last 15 to 30 minutes, suddenly turns somewhat suspenseful, hilarious, and romantic. A hilariously campy movie with a satisfying ending. Rated PG-13 for crude sex-related scenes and humor, sexual innueudo, nudity and language.DescriptionIn this hilarious comedy, the Jekyll and Hyde story takes on new dimensions -- and new lingerie. Dr. Richard Jacks (Tim Daly) is a frustrated scientist who dreams of making the big discovery that'll change his life... and does he ever. When Richard inherits Dr. Jekyll's formula for genetic change he accidentally adds a few twists of his own and is transformed not into the perfect man but into a perfectly wicked woman.
