Pure Happiness

This is the first movie I ever saw in a theatre. I remember sitting next to my mom and knowing I would always love this movie as the conch shells were blown to welcome home the warriors. I din't care about it not being historically accurate. I loved the colors, the music, the people, and Meeko. :) <br />True, this movie bears no resemblance to historical fact. But ignore that and watch the story. There is a powerful message about the dangers of prejudice. The song Savages always chills me to the bone. Here are two cultures so bent on anger they cannot see how alike they are. And we, the audience, see how incredibly alike they are as they prepare for battle. I am constantly reminded of this song, and, I'm sad to say, have fallen victim to preconcieved notions myself. This movie was very fundamental to helping me view people as people. Great movie, subpar blu-ray

For years now I've heard a lot about The Boondock Saints and how great and underrated it is. I hate to admit it but I just now got around to seeing it. <br /> <br />The film was really captivating and never boring. To quickly sum it up it's about two brothers who decide to take the law into their own hands. Being a fan of "vigilante" films I was quickly drawn into the movie. While it's not all action and violence, there's definitely plenty of it here...But it takes a second seat to the story which is very refreshing since a lot of movies of this ilk are all flash and no depth. <br /> <br />My only complaint lies with the blu-ray transfer. It seems like it's just the dvd transfer upscaled which is a little dissapointing. Some scenes look pretty good, while others have some heavy grain. The sound is good though, thankfully. Not so good movie about the Irish gay experience

This is one of the most homoerotic Irish films ever made. That doesn't make it good--because it isn't. It's a sad piece of amateurish film making, from the "writing," to the direction and editing. That this film has found a home on video says more about the poor taste and lack of intellectual skills of those who excuse ignorance and anarchy for "good independent film making." A WONDERFUL HISTORICAL FANTASY

THE LAST SAMURAI doesn't stand up to anything by Kurosawa, but it did prove that Tom Cruise could act, and it is a very watchable film. For one thing, Ken Watanabe, and Koyuki were simply superb, the cinematography, costuming, battle scenes, and music were glorious, and despite the highly fictionalized portrayal of samurai in this period of Japan's history it is a great story, with memorable characters, and one of the most sensual 'dress' sequences ever. Calling All Pirates!

Like many other muppet movies, this movie is so well done in that we don't even think about the fact that many of the characters are puppets, but some of them are human as well. <br /> <br />The movie starts with Billy Bones telling telling the story of one of his adventures with a group of pirates. Really soon, a pirate from his past appears with a death threat. (Giving someone a death threat and allowing him to live a little longer can actually be worse than killing him right away. In some cases, fear of death can be worse than death itself.) Supposedly, Billy Bones double crossed the pirates he had worked with. (There are some rules that even a bad guy obeys. And one of them is not double crossing your comrades.) <br /> <br />Moving on, Gonzo, Rizzo, and the young Jim go on an adventure to find the lost buried treasure. The trip is lead by our favorite frog. We also meet Tim Curry who seems nice enough, but we get the impression that he is hiding his true intentions. <br /> <br />Very quickly, we later discover that Tim Curry is not a simple cook, but rather he is an effective pirate who has been 'playing the cook' to get the information he needs. In some ways, he is very bad, but he carries a charm that makes him likable. And to be fully honest, he does have some redeeming traits. (When his own life is threatened, he allows the young Jim to escape to safety. And in a rather touching moment, he returns the 'borrowed under a threat' compass to Jim. The compass had once belonged to Jim's dead father.) <br /> <br />One point worth some attention here is that at one point Tim Curry faces death threats from his own group of pirates. Someone apparently did their 'pirate research.' A pirate captain only remained in control as long as he kept his crew happy. (There is no law for a pirate to turn to.) So the point that his crew was ready to kill him at one point is realistic. To Tim Curry's credit, the way he avoids it, and wins back the loyalty of his crew shows just how sharp and shrewd his character is. <br /> <br />Rather predictably, our favorite frog, (who is now a captain) runs into a former girlfriend he left at the altar. (Not surprisingly she is a pig.) There reunion of course has some tension, but we also see that reconciliation is possible. With some well placed comic moments, we see that she has been with some other men since, including Tim Curry. <br /> <br />Without going on too long, we have the 'often wanted in pirate movies' final conflict. And sensing what we 'as the audience' probably wanted, Tim Curry escapes justice. <br /> <br />The songs are especially well placed, and Gonzo and Rizzo offer their usual narration with charm. <br /> <br />Overall, it's a great movie that can delight a lover of pirates. Don't let the cover fool you!!

This is the kind of picture that makes you feel "safe", even with the impending danger all around. It takes place in the 50's. At least that is what the movie gives the impression. It is a bit strange, but after watching it and through, you'll understand where the movie is coming from. The main theme of the movie (without spoiling anything) is that the dead are more alive than the living. It's sometimes subtle in the humor and others are flat out blatent. This is a pretty "clean" movie in terms of nudity, language. But, then again it's pretty gruesome without being overly explicit. The story is original, yet, some familiar elements from the Day of the Dead horror movie in which scientist learn how to "enslave" the living dead and keep them as servants. But, it's interesting how certain circumstances play out. <br /> <br />In a way, the movie is in the vein of Tim Burton where it's strangely colorful and almost comic book like. <br /> <br />If you want a movie that is quirky and funny, without being really horrifying, this is a great movie to see. THE CLEAVER'S GET A ZOMBIE!

Well, what can be said about a film that takes the Lassie TV series and mixes it with Edward Scissorhands and The Return Of The Living Dead? A lot actually! Some of them are roaming loose in fenced-off wilderness zones. The rest are, thanks to the good people at the ZomCom corporation, docile and domesticated--indeed, available as house servants for the upwardly-mobile. Such is the case with the Robinson family, a suburban clan who seem to have stepped straight out of an old episode of <I>Lassie</I>. Little Timmy is happy about the new manservant, whom he promptly dubs "Fido," and Fido himself is fine as long as the mechanical collar around his neck doesn't malfunction (in which case he will revert to being a cannibalistic brain-eating zombie). Fido is played, in a stroke of inspiration, by the Scots comedian Billy Connolly, although you wouldn't be able to recognize him without already knowing he's in the movie. Dylan Baker and especially Carrie-Anne Moss are just right as Timmy's parents, who have accidentally wandered out of a John Cheever novel and into a George Romero world. Director Andrew Currie skillfully gets the 1950s satire and the zombie action right, although there's no way to disguise that this premise is too thin to spread out over feature length. Funny!

I liked this film the first time I saw it, but wasn't enamored. I've now watched it several times and each time I grow to appreciate the comedy more and more. The teaming of Martin Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher was genius. The dialogue was so fast paced I missed a lot the first few times -- but, it reminded me of my reaction to Beverly Hills Cop. Love the movie

When my 5 and 8 yr. old grandsons come for the night this is the movie they watch at bedtime because they know it by heart. They seem to relax because it doesn't take any brain power when you know every word. I put it on one night and there was the today show. I had taped over the VHS so we went straight to Amazon and ordered the DVD. It had come in by the time they came back so all is well and they are usually asleep before the movie is over. Never a dull moment in this movie.

I am not one who enjoys an action film. I did find myself drawn to this one though. It has charm and wonderful actors. There is twist's and turns throughout the film. My husband loved it so much that I decided to buy this for him. It's definately worth buying! It takes you through time but in a way that it differs from the rest of the "time traveling" films. Still worth watching

Paul Walker is laughably horrific in his lead performance, but the presence of the ever charismatic Gerard Butler and Billy Connoly save the film from disaster. Kate's character is played very poorly by a good actress, a fact which disappoints on several levels. Of course the book is far better than the film, but for those of us who can't completely grasp all the scientific concepts alluded to in the novel, the movie serves the purpose of giving you the bare basics. The fact that the movie disregards the common knowledge that modern French and English are far different from their Medieval counterparts is further exacerbated by the pathetic "Frenchman" of their group. A wonderful movie

I first saw this during a transantlantic flight but couldn't get the sound to work properly. However, now that I've had an opportunity to really relax and watch the film I have to say I enjoyed it immensely. I've never read any of the Lemony Snicket books but now I think I might start picking them up as well. Jim Carrey's acting is great in this without going over the top. The rest of the cast does wonderful work as well, creating characters who are interesting and likeable. The plot works well and the dialogue is wonderful. 4 Years Later, I Still Love This Film

Almost 4 and a half years ago, we saw this film on opening day while on vacation in Phoenix. We loved this film from the opening sequence until the very last person was thanked in the end credits. The transfer to DVD was absolutely stunning, true to the theater experience visually and audibly. <br /> <br />After all this time, this film stands up beautifully as a film I dearly treasure. A recent rewatching came up because City of Ember had a few homages to this film. Although Lemony is a much better film, there's still some parallels in that more recent movie. <br /> <br />There was a lot of debate over accuracy to the books, and how many books were used. In hind sight, this is just so not important. The books are great for what they are. This film is wonderful for what it is. We've just enjoyed this film as a fantastic wonderful story. <br /> <br />The story is about three children that lose their parents in a sad house fire. The orphans are haunted by money grubbing Count Olaf who tries to kill them over and over again. The things that happen to these children is amazing. <br /> <br />From my perspective, this film has very few missteps. The soundtrack is simply outstanding, it is almost another character that amplifies critical moments. The film has this fabulous retro-tech other world look, muted colors, dark scenery, and sparse landscapes. Audio is just great, surround sound is used to perfection. The pacing is virtually perfect, timing of each scene is spot on. <br /> <br />The actors, oh so much to enjoy. Judd Law is so perfect as the narrator, he has a wonderful voice. The children are just so cool, the little girl is precious. My favorite line from her, "She is the mayor of crazy town." I'm not a fan of Meryl Streep at all, and I really like her in this film. Top to bottom, excellent cast. Jim Carrey, maybe a bit over the top, but it's the character. He doesn't necessarily steal this show. <br /> <br />The biggest regret of this film, no more will be made. It didn't do nearly well enough in box offic or DVD sales. So nobody will finance another installment. Harry Potter is good, those films are a fantastic series. The usual mistaken identity farce

Yes, I was very disappointed with the first Garfield movie, but I saw both movies for a reasonable price so I bought them. While I watched the first movie again, and my opinion hadn't changed, I'd heard good things about the second Garfield movie. Plus, it's got Billy Connolly in it - where can you go wrong there? <br /> <br />The one plus point about this movie is Breckin Meyer doesn't appear very much. I like Breckin, but I just don't think he's the right actor to play Jon. It doesn't match what I see in my head, or the cartoons. Neither does Odie, but don't even get me started on that. <br /> <br />The basic, simplistic plot line goes like this: Garfield ends up in Jon's suitcase, when he follows Liz to London to propose. Garfield ends up going to see the sights, and gets confused with a rich aristoCAT (voiced by a very posh Tim Curry). The rich aristoCAT gets confused with Garfield, and each go to the wrong homes. Cue lots of mishaps, some funny moments, although few and far between, and Billy Connolly being quite unfunny. <br /> <br />The best thing about the DVD? The extras. You get to see THE Jim Davis draw Garfield, Odie & Pooky, and show you the steps of how to go about drawing them. He also draws a DVD exclusive comic strip, and it takes FOUR people to ink it, colour it etc. WOW! For one, three frame comic strip. The rest of the extras include your standard games, and a featurette about the animals/trainers involved in the movie. <br /> <br />Am I disappointed by both movies? Yes I am, I hope to god there's either not another movie, or it's a lot better. Because quite frankly, I so prefer the books or the TV shows. You just can't fault them.
