There is some great acting in here, almost mesmerizing at times. The story is a typical Capra-esquire populist one in which the average man is elevated to high status, his worth and valued boosted in a cynical world.
Yes, it's a far-fetched story but it's fun to watch and has some powerful messages, leading with "Love thy neighbor." I was very impressed with Barbara Stanwyck's speech near the end, noting Jesus' words to that effect while pleading to Gary Cooper. By the way, having Cooper and Stanwyck as the leads isn't all bad, either! Adding actors like Walter Brennan, James Gleason and Spring Byington make it all the better.
Photography-wise, the film has an almost-eerie look to it in parts and is very interesting to view. Why this has never been put out DVD wotj a decemt tramsfer. I don't know.......and it's a crime. As far as I know there is NO good print available for fans of this great film.B00005RERN20A3B00QM1PP39CA3B00QM1PP39CAndres Mars02009-02-17The Film's a Five the Print's a TwoThis is my favorite Capra film. I bought it because I never tire of it--that is, until I got this DVD. This film badly needs to be remastered. The picture and sound quality of this DVD are awful. Hopefully, someone will release a better copy. I'll try again when that happens. B00005RERN10A1QHS3ERWECPUIA1QHS3ERWECPUIGary R. Some terrific acting by Gary Cooper as he is able to capture our sympathy and gain our support. Barbara Stanwyck, Ann, who uses and exploits Gary, John, to manufacture headlines for her own advancement, falls for the guy and realizes too late that her callousness has ruined every chance she has to get the guy. The cliff-hanging last scenes, keep you at rapt attention, even if you have seen the movie many times before. A movie that lets Gary Cooper inspire the good and sometimes forgotten qualities in all of us. ON MY OWN, I KNEW OF FRANK CAPRA ONLY FROM "ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE". I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT ANY OF HIS OTHER FEATURES. "MEET JOHN DOE", WAS I THINK THE 3rD MOVIE I WAS INTRODUCED TO AND IT WAS ALSO THE ONE THE CLINCHED IN MIND, THE GENIUS OF THIS MAN WHO I BELIEVE MAKES JOHN HUGHES LOOK LIKE TOBE HOOPER(NO OFFENSE TO EITHER ARTIST). THIS MOVIE HAS MANY THINGS GOING FOR IT, MOODY AND AT THE SAME TIME EXCEPTIONALLY OPTIMISTIC, THE THEME CARRIES THROUGH-OUT THE MOVIE,WITHOUT GIVING AWAY TO MUCH, GARY COOPER PLAYS A DISENFRANCHISED SOUL, WHO ALSO HAPPENS TO BE AN EX-BASEBALL PLAYER. HE BASICALLY ACCEPTS A ROLE"JOHN DOE" FROM A NEWSPAPER REPORTER TO BE A PHYSICAL PROTEST OF ALL THE WRONGS / EVILS IN THE WORLD, DECLARING HE WILL COMMIT SUICIDE ON XMAS EVE...PRETTY HEADY STUFF FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME.

Gary Cooper and Eddie Albert bring laughter back into the military with this old favorite. SarnoBoston, Massachusetts United States22007-06-11......HERE COMES THE US NAVY!!!............A hilarious comedy but with objectivity, too....#3 and #4 below critics sum up the movie OK...the cast is wonderful/perfect...Gary Cooper, the enticing Jane Greer, Eddie Albert, Charles Bronson, Jack Webb, Lee Marvin, Ray Collins, John McIntire, Jack Warden, Richard Erdman, Harry Von Zell, Ed Begley, Sr and Harvey Lembeck...all combine talents worthy of the price of admission by far...and the US Navy for art/direction...Cooper and Greer are both Navy officers and are Mr & Mrs but always away on official Navy duties; however, one scene finally finds them together for a weekend at a Navy fund-raiser and Jane Greer does a masterful job of telling her husband to shower up; Cooper, rather quizically, wonders why??...just the look at Greer's smiling eyes does Cooper finally realizes this is his 'lucky' nite after a long absence...they had chemistry these two for this scene as a married couple...all the shipboard shennanigans are rip/roaring for this entire unproven crew...the look on Admiral Ed Begley's face is slide/spliting, as he is inspecting the engine room gang's antics in the bowels of this lil tea/kettle of a ship...they are given a hopeless task to perform, but with great improvisation they succeed the impossible...by coming into the harbor of the Philadelphia Navy Yard at full speed on their sub/chaser is the raucous climax to this enjoyable/fun comedy...especially, any military service person will love this timely comedy during the early years of WW2 getting our Reserve Officers acclimated to active duty the hard way...FAST!!!!.....well done, Navy!!.....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF B000EHSVX251A1SXNRD7P4HF97A1SXNRD7P4HF97Sallie J. DescriptionOscar®-nominated Director Henry Hathaway (1935: Lives of a Bengal Lancer) enlisted an all-star cast, headed by Gary Cooper in a ?smash performance? Gaster22008-03-14If it is boring, make sure it's long long long. This has got to be one of the most boring movies ever made. It goes on and on and on with nothing happening. You would be much less bored at a lecture on the origin of trigonometry. I saw it brand new when I was 15 in 1959. I know I was young, but I saw many serious films that year (I went to the movies every Saturday)--films like Imitation of Life, Anatomy of a Murder, On the Beach, Room At the Top, The Sound and the Fury, and Suddenly Last Summer (to name just a few), and I loved them and stayed interested. I don't think I was too young to appreciate this movie at age 15 because I tried to watch it a couple of years ago on TV and got just as bored. Even with these big stars (mostly just going through the motions here) this is one of the biggest flops in history. Save your money. B000274TKI32A2204H0IBRC0TAA2204H0IBRC0TAJ. CornwellPortland, OR USA22007-12-04All for the Love of Production Values..They Came to Cordura (1959) is an awesome western example of too much money, and not enough script or story. After a brief title card, we have some lackluster dialogue between Gary Cooper and Edward Platt (Chief from Get Smart the Complete Series -- Seasons 1-5 DVD Box Set) and launch into the most amazing cavalry charge ever to grace the silver screen, outside of Waterloo (1970). The action sequence following it tightly edited and well done as well, but after the banditos are finished, the cameras should have been shut off.

If you're looking for some courageous US Cavalry action from the golden age of the mounted soldier, look no further.. but also be aware this film turns into melodrama shortly there after. Well acted, but still melodrama.B000274TKI55A34SEXXRLBLGURA34SEXXRLBLGURHybrid Rogue\\][//Above82007-08-22Hah!I disagree with all the characteizations in the first three reviews of this film; They Came To Cordura. I found the film fascinating, complex, thought provoking, and above all well acted. It's too bad Tab Hunter got pigion-holed as a prettyboy--the talent he showed in this film, shows he could have been a 'serious actor'. I don't believe that anyone accustomed to television could ever 'get' a film like this...they have been dumbed down to the point of...well, I can't even put it in polite language. One more thing; Cooper is Cooper, he has always been. He has a peculuar dilivery to his speech. One either likes it or not. I love the guy, and Rita finally got a chance to REALLY act in this one--it's worth it for that alone to see the film.B000274TKI53A1TVB13B840NLBA1TVB13B840NLBRobert M. Bonnettbobbinthehousetowson, md.32007-08-03ACTING AT ITS BEST !!!!If you like Gary Cooper you will enjoy him in this tense story of a man finding who he really is. Rita Hayworth in a role that actually demands acting , serious acting . She usually plays the dance hall type but in this she is a woman of substance...This movie requires patience and attention to the characters. If you can do that you will enjoy it! Its an adult movie that treats you like an adult.....B000274TKI42A3O536E2YOKK4YA3O536E2YOKK4Y! DurrkkOhio/PA border USA22007-03-04Reach Exceeds GraspThe setting for this ambitious 1959 film is the 1916 U.S./Mexican border conflict. Entrance into WWI is imminent and Gary Cooper plays a major who escorts five men to the the New Mexican base town of Cordura (which means "courage"). The five men are candidates for the Medal of Honor; they've proven themselves courageous in battle and the government wants heroes to promote military recruitment. Cooper is chosen for the job to shame him since he acted cowardly in his last (only) battle. Along for the ride is Rita Hayworth, an alcoholic American expatriate charged with aiding the Mexicans.

Cooper's character is in incredible agony throughout the picture. Courage is the one thing he believes he lacks and so he marvels at the trait, even if the person possessing it is a scumbag in every other way. He perceives courage as the noblest human quality, redeeming a person from all other flaws, no matter how bad. His past cowardice naturally compels him to over-compensate as the leader of the group, which doesn't win him any friends, if you know what I mean.

"They Came to Cordura" is a Western, I suppose, but it's more accurately a lost-in-the-desert/survival story (e.g. "Flight of the Pheonix," "Sands of the Kalahari"). The entire film takes place in the desert wilderness. The group is harassed by bandits and they're forced to give up their horses; in addition, one man falls ill and must be carried on a stretcher. Four of the men become increasingly hostile toward the major, propelled by the authority-hating, rivalrous sergeant (Van Heflin).

The film will appeal to anyone who, like me, is into lost-in-the-wilderness type stories. Unfortunately, although the screenplay and subject matter (What is courage?) are ambitious and highly thought-provoking, the execution is less than satisfactory. The dialogue/delivery is dated and the acting, at times, less than authentic. Still, the material is taken absolutely seriously by all involved.

One highlight of the film is redhead Rita Hayworth. This is the first and only film I've ever seen her in. My only previous exposure to her was that famous WWII era photo of her in a nightgown with her hand in her hair. As far as I'm concerned that picture doesn't do her justice. She looks and is completely different than the image that picture conveys. At the time of filming she was almost 41 years old. Her character in the film compassionately relates to Cooper's character for reasons revealed in the story.

I've heard that the film was originally a 2.5 hour piece; unfortunately it was taken out of the director's hands and about 30 or so minutes were cut. Director Robert Rossen was in the process of putting together a director's cut when he unexpectedly died in 1966.

BOTTOM LINE: Yes, the film's reach exceeds its grasp and, yes, it is dated, but I really appreciate this film. I can see why some would give it a low rating while others consider a near-masterpiece. Cooper's torturous peformance is potent and Rita Hayworth is splendid. The ending wherein Cooper endeavors to move a train cart or die trying is a moving image. The film does succeed in provoking the viewer to consider the nature of courage, despite its flaws.

For an incredibly well-written, detailed and accurate evaluation of the film please see grinalltheway's review from June 21, 2006, just four reviews below. Product DescriptionCalled "an impressive and important film" by Variety THEY CAME TO CORDURA was hailed by critics as "the most disturbing war picture since The Bridge on the River Kwai." A Timeless story of courage and cowardice set against the backdrop of the 1916 war against Pancho Villa. The film stars Gary Cooper as Thomas Thorn a career Army officer given the humiliating task of leading five Medal of Honor candidates to the military base of Cordura Texas. Branded a coward during the battle Thorn hopes to learn what these men each of whom performed heroically under fire possess which he lacks. But as the grueling journey through the desert progresses the "heroes" panic attempting murder mutiny and rape as the quest for survival reveals their true characters. Rita Hayworth in a dramatic departure from her glamour-girl roles co-stars as the seventh member of the group an American expatriate accused of aiding the Mexicans. At first contemptuous of Thorn she gradually comes to appreciate his quiet integrity as he leads his mutinous charges through a desperate action-packed odyssey. Filled with both exciting battle scenes and finely-tuned drama their treacherous trek to the town of Cordura (which is also the Spanish word for courage) is a rugged and riveting tale of bravery far more enduring than the fleeting heroics of battle.System Requirements: Running Time 123 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: WESTERN/MISC. Rating: NR UPC: 043396078765 Manufacturer No: 07876Amazon.comGary Cooper's forte--the searching, lone figure beleaguered by conflicts over conscience, truth, and ethics--followed him all the way to the ambitious They Came to Cordura, his third-to-last feature. Cooper plays Thomas Thorn, a career officer in America's fading horse Army of the early 20th century. Thorn's alleged cowardice in battle has been papered over by superiors: He is to identify acts of bravery during an attack on Pancho Villa's troops and lead those designated heroes to a Medal of Honor ceremony in Cordura, Texas. Though Thorn tries to extract the secret behind courage from each man, he discovers a battle-hardened, bestial side to them as well. The Cordura journey becomes fraught with mutiny and near-assaults on a Yankee expatriate (Rita Hayworth). Thorn, reputation aside, redefines courage on his own terms. This widescreen drama (the DVD offers full-screen format as well) is suspenseful, morally complex, and visually rich, but Cooper's performance carries the day. --Tom KeoghB000056H2KVera CruzB0014BQR2YThe WesternerB000N3T0GYUnconquered (Universal Cinema Classics)B0014BQR24Man of the WestB0014BQR1AFox Western Classics (Rawhide / The Gunfighter / Garden of Evil)163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video14133641Heroes291421By Theme163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video290988Action & Combat586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video291342Drama586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video722772011General AAS586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video291008General163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291054Classics163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video898806Gary Cooper898804Western Stars163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video411764Bannon, Jim411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video416236Callan, Michael416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418488Conte, Richard416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418604Cooper, Gary416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427434Hayworth, Rita426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427530Heflin, Van426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428962Hunter, Tab426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430948Keith, Robert430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453596York, Dick453438( Y )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video461498Rossen, Robert461084( R )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video573628All Sony Pictures Titles516494Sony Pictures Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579550( T )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - 1959562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR3OHAMZAPTRD2OCavalry ClassicsR2RGSCGXVV7ZDUIf you want to discover Gary Cooper (1901 - 1961)R9JOHOPQ1GJK7Rita: Classic Movies of Rita HayworthRZ4XGXX7W1JF5The Best Films of 1959R3TK2L85KFCV0CSOME DVDS IVE BOUGHT IN 2006R6KVORWXCY9NGDick Haymes & WivesR2E4CFFQ5NHDO6The Best Westerns of Gary Cooper398Z08IC3EPU9TAB HUNTER Hollywood Hunk3SPGHVWY8X2O1BEST OF THE FORGOTTEN WEST: Overlooked Western Movie Gems!33QYESW3VL1H8The Best of Gary Cooper,After #3 in no particular order0782009972http://www.amazon.com/High-Noon-Gary-Cooper/dp/0782009972%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D078200997221975http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JAX3DBFZL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JAX3DBFZL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JAX3DBFZL.jpg475336http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JAX3DBFZL._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JAX3DBFZL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JAX3DBFZL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JAX3DBFZL.jpg475336Gary CooperGrace KellyThomas MitchellLloyd BridgesKaty Jurado1.33:1NR (Not Rated)DVDFloyd CrosbyElmo WilliamsCarl ForemanCarl ForemanStanley KramerJohn W. The movie is, of course, a classic, and the quality of the DVD is superb. The story teaches a great lesson about what America can expect from the rest of the world as we either face down our enemies or attempt to solve our current economy problems - ALONE.

My biggest problem with this "package" was the "Inside High Noon," documentary and it's many cuts to Bill Clinton giving his "take" on a story about a man of legendary courage and character. Can the irony GET any deeper? It is so incongruous I simply cannot watch it, and that's a shame because obviously somebody involved in this project is a big Clinton fan and decided this was an excellent chance to link this clown with a legend like Will Kane, showing the typical poor taste all Bill Clinton fans are cursed with.
A movie that has been romanticized and over-analysed way out of proportion (if it's a McCarthyist parable, than pray tell, which character represents McCarthy?), High Noon is a solid western with a good performance by Gary Cooper, but it's neither the second coming nor one of the best movies ever made078200997250A11CBNYM01LMOZA11CBNYM01LMOZRichard A. Gary Cooper is at his best since his performance in Seargent York.Amazon.com essential videoOne of the greatest Westerns ever made gets the deluxe treatment on this superior disc from Republic Home Video's Silver Screen Classics line of special-edition DVDs. Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign. Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first "adult" Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. Additional features include the exclusive documentary The Making of High Noon, hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin and featuring interviews with the late Lloyd Bridges (who played Cooper's rival ex-deputy), director Fred Zinnemann, and producer Stanley Kramer. Also included is the original theatrical trailer and a special chapter stop highlighting the Oscar-winning song "Do Not Forsake Me." Offered in English and dubbed French and Spanish, with English closed-captioning or Spanish and French subtitles. --Jeff Shannon0792163710ShaneB000059TFWThe Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)B001TWT0AEThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Paramount Centennial Collection)6304696566The SearchersB0000DJZ8RThe Grapes of Wrath163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291008General163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291010Action & Adventure163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291054Classics163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video898806Gary Cooper898804Western Stars163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video414328Bridges, Lloyd411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418604Cooper, Gary416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video417964Cleef, Lee Van416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422074Elliott, Dick421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422646Farley, Morgan422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video430456Jurado, Katy429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431036Kelly, Grace430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432014Kruger, Otto430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434624MacDonald, Ian434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436764McVeagh, Eve434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437628Mitchell, Thomas434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438108Morgan, Harry434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video446152Shannon, Harry444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452528Wilke, Robert J451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video463826Zinnemann, Fred463762( Z )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579526( H )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - 1959562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1E1YK9L9S72HXStrength & HonorR3O6W6M98764TSWestern Film EssentialsR2XH5CEVVBECVQFavorite Movies Made Before I WasR346MFCKCKOHGList of movies considered the very best (vol. 2)R1VDDG80ZJIBASWesterns with CharacterR2CZ5F9QVZTXI3Films For Objective AudiencesR1J873HDCYUVVYSee the highest rated guy movies of all time25EMYIB23TPQYMy Favorite WesternsX368LCNPHTH3What you need to see13KTJX7DMEIMCCLASSIC HEROES ON DVDB00008RV0Hhttp://www.amazon.com/Cloak-Dagger-Gary-Cooper/dp/B00008RV0H%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00008RV0H37212http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518ZMQ5GF7L._SL75_.jpg7551http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518ZMQ5GF7L._SL160_.jpg160108http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518ZMQ5GF7L.jpg475320http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518ZMQ5GF7L._SL30_.jpg3020http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518ZMQ5GF7L._SL75_.jpg7551http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518ZMQ5GF7L._SL160_.jpg160108http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/518ZMQ5GF7L.jpg475320Gary CooperRobert AldaLilli PalmerVladimir SokoloffJ. DeRiemerSan Antonio, Texas, USA42006-04-13A Now-And-Then Interesting Fritz Lang Film, But Not A Very Successful OneLet's get the bad news out of the way first. And please note that some elements of the plot are discussed. Fritz Lang while in Hollywood made some movies of such variable quality that, for me, it's hard to get a fix on just how good he was, particularly considering the quality and originality of his German films. Cloak and Dagger is not exactly a failure, but it sets up such an unrealistic premise that the movie itself seems not much more than a left-handed exercise by a right-handed man. For instance, Gary Cooper's character, Professor Alvah Jesper, a physicist at Midwestern University, is recruited by the Office of Strategic Services to go to Switzerland. We meet Jesper in his lab working on an experiment...in a well-cut suit, the coat buttoned and wearing a perfectly knotted tie. With apparently no time for training, we meet him again two days later in Switzerland up to his neck in German spies. Substantial stretches of the movie, particularly in the middle, just seem to dawdle along. While the film features an A list star with Cooper, some of the secondary players don't add much interest. And Cooper, 45 when he made the movie, already had that haggard look around his eyes. He could easily have been 55. It doesn't help that the film's female lead, Lilli Palmer, who was 32, could easily pass for 22.

Still, the movie has some high points. The espionage maneuvering in Switzerland played out in an elegant hotel and a mountain lodge is clever and, in the lodge, violent. Jesper's insertion into Italy from a submarine at night and in wet weather builds tension, as does his meeting with Italian partisans and their trip to Rome, hidden in a truck, through checkpoints. The violent confrontation at a country farmhouse between an aging Italian physicist and his daughter is unexpected. And one hands-on fight to the death between Jesper and a tough Italian undercover cop played by Marc Lawrence in a building entrance next to a restaurant, with street musicians playing and singing, is silent and brutal.

The basic story line goes like this. The OSS knows the Germans are working to build an atom bomb but they don't know how far along the project is. A Hungarian scientist, a brilliant mathematician, has escaped from Germany over the Alps to Switzerland. Jesper, a physicist working on the American bomb, is recruited to go to Switzerland and interview the woman. He speaks German and the two know each other. As things would have it, Jesper determines he must go on to Italy to try to talk an Italian scientist into escaping to America. He meets with a number of Italian partisans who help him, including Gina (Lilli Palmer in her first Hollywood movie), and the partisans' leader, Pinkie (Robert Alda). Tentatively, while Jesper and Gina are hiding out together in Rome, a relationship develops. The end of the movie, after partisans hold off the Germans to allow Jesper and the scientist to escape, sees Jesper pledging to return for Gina after the war, and Gina, eyes misting, watches his plane fly off.

If you're a Lang completist or just enjoy WWII espionage movies, this might be something to add to your collection. The DVD picture is just fine. There are no extras.B00008RV0H34AK61LQI92GTCHAK61LQI92GTCHSteven HellerstedtSH42005-07-27This is a race. It's the Germans or us. As the title suggests, CLOAK AND DAGGER (1946) is a spy movie that fictionally depicts the exploits of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), the intelligence arm of the US Army and the precursor of CIA. In this movie director Fritz Lang makes of Gary Cooper a physicist and sends him to Switzerland to find and bring home a foreign scientist who's working on the atom bomb. When that scientist is killed by enemy agents Cooper goes to Italy to extract yet another scientist whose sympathies are with the Allied cause.

There's are some fantastic elements to CLOAK AND DAGGER that made it hard for me to warm up to this movie. Cooper (as Prof. Alvah Jasper) is, we're told, working on the Manhattan Project when the OSS chief picks him because `he'll know what to look for', whatever that means. Maybe it means he can tell the difference between pitchblende and heavy water. You'd think whoever was working on the Manhattan Project was a lot more valuable in the lab than in the field, especially when about all he does, spy-wise, is conduct a friendly kidnapping. Heck, Richard Conte or even John Ireland could do that for you, and at half the price - not that Conte or Ireland are in this one, but this movie doesn't need or add to the luster of a star of Cooper's stature. According to a biography of Lang, CLOAK AND DAGGER was intended to be Lang's warning against atomic research. That would explain why Lang has Prof. Jasper go on and on about the power contained in an apple - why, there's enough energy locked in an apple to blow up this campus! This city, even! C&D was supposed to end with an impassioned anti-atom speech by Jasper which, according to the Lang biography, was filmed and subsequently cut out and destroyed by the releasing company. While in Italian Jasper meets and becomes the charge of pretty young resistance fighter Gina (Lilli Palmer.) Gina might have been able to resist the charms of a Conte or an Ireland, but you don't mix a pretty young with a superstar like Gary Cooper, leave them alone and not expect sparks to fly, embers to glow and flames to erupt. The romantic subplot more or less hijacks half the movie and all the good stuff in the movie happens when Cooper and Palmer are alone. They get the best scenes, including a charming night in a safe house with a forlorn kitten yowling outside the door.

The problem - problems, really - stem from the limp action. Lang handles the foreign agent paranoia stuff well enough. Things ain't what they seem. Carelessly tossed matchboxes or a brace of nuns collecting for the poor can be deadly menaces. There are a couple of well choreographed fight scenes, but the danger never becomes imminent enough and the romance never quite believable enough to work. I think Lang was trying for a lump in the throat when Gina and Jasper share a `We'll always have Paris' scene. That scene leaves one a bit cold, and, as usually happens when such things fail, you resent the director for so blatantly trying to manipulate your emotions. It's probably for the best that the studio loped off the anti-atom ending. One misfire ending is enough for any movie. This one didn't need two of them.

CLOAK AND DAGGER is an okay movie, probably best suited for fans of Gary Cooper or Fritz Lang. I don't know if there are a lot of Lilli Palmer fans out there, but she's the best thing in this one. I'm a big fan of Lang's and I'm slowly completing my collection of his available titles. Lang's deliberate approach to storytelling doesn't bother me much, but this one was a little too slow and diffused even for me. The print is in good condition, the disk contains no extra features.
DescriptionFrom legendary director Fritz Lang comes an engrossing spy thriller years ahead of its time. Gary Cooper is an American scientist, parachuted into war-torn Nazi Germany to obtain military secrets. But the deeper he probes, the deadlier his mission becomes...especially when his involvement with mysterious Lilli Palmer catapults him into an intense maelstrom of danger, betrayal and murder. Amazon.comCloak and Dagger will go down in history as one of the first post-war, atomic power, spy thrillers. Gary Cooper is physics professor Alvah Jesper, sent to Europe on a secret mission to uncover the Nazis' atomic bomb program. The elements are all there for success: the legendary director Fritz Lang, Gary Cooper, World War II, spyies, murder, romance, the beautiful Lilli Palmer, and the danger of atomic power in the hands of the Nazis. But somehow it all falls a little flat. Cloak and Dagger is still worth checking out for fans of post-war espionage films and cinephiles interested in the historical pairing of Lang and Cooper. And I don't believe in beer suds reading."Cas Brown: "I find myself in an extremely awkward position."

Let's plot it out: On the eve of his wedding, college professor Casanova "Cas" Brown (Cooper) receives an enigmatic letter from a Chicago maternity hospital. Before jetting to Chicago to see what the blazes is going on, Cas reveals to his prospective father-in-law that he had been briefly married less than a year ago, that marriage since then annulled. Arriving at the maternity hospital, Cas sees his adorable baby girl for the first time and falls in love with her. When he finds out that she's slated for adoption (with his ex-wife about to be re-married herself), he decides to make off with the baby.

Some trivia now. CASANOVA BROWN, released in 1944, is based on the play by Floyd Dell and Thomas Mitchell, which had already been adapted twice to cinema, in 1930 (starring Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.) and in 1939 (starring Hugh Herbert), with both of those films titled LITTLE ACCIDENT. CASANOVA BROWN provides the second teaming of Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright, the first pairing being in the all-time 1942 classic The Pride of the Yankees (Anniversary Edition). Now CASANOVA BROWN isn't in the same league as PRIDE OF THE YANKEES, and, as a comedy, it pales in comparison to Cooper's Ball of Fire, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Along Came Jones, and even Love in the Afternoon. But it does have a few things going for it, not the least of which are the two leads Cooper and Wright.

Cooper comes with his patented low key acting style, and his natural "aw, shucks" charisma somehow carries him thru the wacky situations his character gets put into. Teresa Wright is typically sweet-natured and very lovely and simply looks radiant on camera. By the by, the Wizard of Oz himself, Frank Morgan, in his part of J.J. Ferris, an old, callous, and opinionated scoundrel and Cas's confidant, scores some smiles from me but also a bit of ill will. He handed his daughter Madge some pretty underserved shabby treatment there. Meanwhile, Anita Louise makes the most of her thankless role of Madge, and she does provide additional babe candy. But I felt bad for her. The movie's hook is also pretty cute. Actors may notoriousy not like working with babies, afraid that they might be upstaged by the young 'uns. But there's no doubt it's more a winning plot formula than not.

Um, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. CASANOVA BROWN isn't a bad flick, but there's a reason this isn't hailed as Cooper's showcase comedy film. Overall, the film offers mild-mannered humor and is merely a notch above your average picture, with the romantic angle more or less taking a back seat. It's not as funny as I'd hoped, although it does have its funny moments, most of these dealing with Cooper's antics as unsuspecting new pops. The funniest scene, though, may have been a funny flashback in which Cas meets Isabel's disapproving and horoscope-obsessed parents and then proceeds to burn down their $750,000 home. Inadvertently, of course.

Cas, by the way, is named after his ancestor, the original Casanova. That the movie doesn't take more advantage of this plot device seems a dang shame. But I guess it's hard to picture Cooper in the role of the seducer. He's a good looking dude, I guess, but his placid, straight-forward personality doesn't lend itself to such outrageous hijinks.

Star power and cute baby shenanigans drive CASANOVA BROWN, and I was glad enough that I saw this picture. One wonders, though, what Cary Grant or William Powell - actors with a decidedly lighter touch than Cooper - would've done in the role of Casanova Brown. That might be the difference between the comedy classic this could've been and a picture that is pleasant, occasionally amusing, and mildly risque for its time. Which is what this is.B000NIBUTE50A1Y5LEI00K238EA1Y5LEI00K238EJ. Chambersjaxalive02007-09-04EXCELLENTI LOVED THIS DVD. What a delightful film! I had forgotten that Gary Cooper made another film with the beautiful and talented Teresa Wright. She was not only beautiful, but made you feel like you were 'home' whenever she is on the screen. This is a sentimental film but also very funny- I will be buying the DVD so I can add this adorable film to my collection of classic films. What a pleasure to watch a film that actually has a storyline you can follow without the usual sex scenes in movies today, and best of all no profanity! When Teresa Wright's character has the baby you know Gary Cooper is the father, but we didn't have to see the conception to know how the baby got there....well...what a novel idea! Not showing an intimate moment between a man and a woman and we actually get it! Think about it...do we really need to see all that nonsense in the present day movies to get the point??? I think not! This is what makes these films timeless- Hopefully the movie studios will continue to release these wonderful classic films.Product DescriptionStudio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 02/05/2008 Run time: 94 minutes Rating: NrB000NIBUTOThe Wedding NightB000NIBUT4Ball of FireB0012GVMIKMidnight (Universal Cinema Classics)B0012GVMIAEasy Living (Universal Cinema Classics)B000N3T0GYUnconquered (Universal Cinema Classics)163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291157Parenthood291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163377Slapstick163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video300411Comedy163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video291008General163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video291054Classics163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video898806Gary Cooper898804Western Stars163312Westerns404276Genres130DVD139452Video411364Bacon, Irving411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418268Collinge, Patricia416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418604Cooper, Gary416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422128Elsom, Isobel421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422302Esmond, Jill421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426870Hardt, Eloise426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434168Louise, Anita432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438104Morgan, Frank434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440706Parnell, Emory440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450022Treen, Mary448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video453344Wright, Teresa451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video463616Wood, Sam463154( W )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 - 1949562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoRRFGTWPEDND6TTurner Classic Movies: my picks for June 2009R2RGSCGXVV7ZDUIf you want to discover Gary Cooper (1901 - 1961)RXKFGLELKIYXMIf you want to discover Teresa Wright (1918 - 2005)1TE2IJRT1WTQIRemembering Teresa Wright (1918-2005)B000Q6774Ahttp://www.amazon.com/Cooper-Legends-Collection-Winning-Barbara/dp/B000Q6774A%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000Q6774A38588http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EOt8vf5dL._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EOt8vf5dL._SL160_.jpg160120http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EOt8vf5dL.jpg500376http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EOt8vf5dL._SL30_.jpg3023http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EOt8vf5dL._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EOt8vf5dL._SL160_.jpg160120http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EOt8vf5dL.jpg500376Gary CooperBurt LancasterDavid NivenMerle OberonRonald Colman1.33:1NR (Not Rated)DVDTWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTAlan CampbellAnita LoosBob ArdeyBorden ChaseH.C. The MGM Movie Legends Collection for Cooper offers none of these movies, but instead some lesser known Cooper flicks that are still quite watchable.

Chronologically, the first in the foursome is The Winning of Barbara Worth, a late silent film which actually has Cooper in a supporting role, albeit a major one. The title character is an orphan taken in by a man who envisions bringing the water of the Colorado River to the desert. As an adult, Barbara will be wooed by two men: Cooper, the friend she grew up with, and Ronald Colman, who will help develop the critical dam. When the main financier behind the dam refuses to pay for reinforcing it, disaster ensues.

The Cowboy and the Lady has Cooper as a blind date for poor-little-rich-girl Merle Oberon. They fall hard for each other, but she has concealed the fact that she is wealthy since he hates the rich. Eventually, he will find out, and (comic) disaster ensues. In The Real Glory, Cooper is a doctor assigned to a military squad in the post-Spanish American War Philippines. The American troops are there to train the locals so they can protect themselves from raids by the local bandit tribe. As people start being picked off by assassins and cholera, it's up to Cooper to lead a mission to save the day.

In Vera Cruz, Cooper is an ex-Confederate mercenary who goes to Mexico to fight its Civil War for whichever side pays the most. He eventually joins Burt Lancaster and his gang (which includes Charles Buchinsky, later known as Charles Bronson as well as Ernest Borgnine and Jack Elam). Cooper and Lancaster will lead an escort that is taking a countess from Mexico City to Vera Cruz; hidden in her carriage is $3 million in gold, and soon everyone is playing games against each other to get the money.

With one movie made in the 1920s, two in the 1930s and one in the 1950s, this set shows the evolution (and aging) of Cooper the actor and demonstrates why he is one of the biggest names in Hollywood for decades. There are no extras to speak of in the set, and the movies themselves range from near-great (Barbara Worth and Vera Cruz) to good (The Cowboy and the Lady) to just okay (The Real Glory). Overall, I rate this one four stars; it's a good chance to see some lesser known Cooper movies.B000Q6774A45A3QIW6ULPIPM2VA3QIW6ULPIPM2VChip KaufmannAsheville, N.C. United States52007-11-28For Silent Fans , BARBARA Is WORTH It.I must confess that even though I am a silent film enthusiast with quite a collection of silent films on VHS and DVD (and a number of reviews on Amazon), I had never heard of THE WINNING OF BARBARA WORTH. Now that I have seen it the surprise is even greater. Made by Samuel Goldwyn in 1926 and featuring Gary Cooper in his first credited film appearance, this movie is an outstanding example of a late American silent film. Not a classic but a well constructed, well acted and well photographed film presented here in a pristine print with color tints and a score performed by legendary organist Gaylord Carter. The speed transfer is occassionally too fast but never enough to detract from what you're watching.

The director was Henry King who made the silent classic TOL'ABLE DAVID in 1921 and whose career lasted well into the sound era with other classics such as THE SONG OF BERNADETTE, TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH, and THE SUN ALSO RISES. The casting shows what silent films were truly capable of. Joining Cooper are Ronald Colman and Vilma Banky as the romantic leads which would have been impossible in the sound era as Hungarian actress Banky could barely speak English and Colman's voice was much too urbane to be believable in a Western setting. The story of Western boom towns and the building of a faulty dam which results in massive flooding is based on the novel by Harold Bell Wright and is still relevant today.
Director King knows how to handle both the action scenes and the quieter moments which were his real specialty. THE WINNING OF BARBARA WORTH is part of the 4 DVD set GARY COOPER: MGM MOVIE LEGENDS COLLECTION which features 3 sound features THE COWBOY AND THE LADY, THE REAL GLORY, and VERA CRUZ which was directed by Robert Aldrich. If you love Cooper then by all means get this set for your collection. If you just want the silent then look for used copies of BARBARA WORTH elsewhere on Amazon.B000Q6774A51A22FG0QQH8KBL0A22FG0QQH8KBL0Thomas J. HoskerWashington, DC12007-08-24Terrific!: Gary Cooper Movie Legends CollectionIn my opinion, Gary Cooper was one of the finest actors America has produced. The films in this set are excellent examples of his work. One, in particular, however, caught my attention and I have have watched it many times since buying the set. "The Real Glory" is seldom seen on TV, but has immense relevance to today's news. Set in roughly 1900 in the Phillipines, it describes the impact of a US Government decison to draw down US occupation forces in that country (following its occupation during the Spanish-American War in 1898) at a time when the indigenous Moro (Moslem) peoples were fighting viciously to drive the occupying American forces out. The movie begins with a US Army officers' discussion of a newly received order to withdraw, with a discussion amongst the US Army officers present of the likely murderous effect of withdrawal by the US forces on the non-Moro Phillipino inhabitants. Filmed in the late 1930s, the comparisons to today's headlines are remarkable. I HIGHLY recommend the set, if only for this one movie.B000Q6774A58A1PPIFR51T81IKA1PPIFR51T81IKBuster49Utica, NY92007-07-30FILM HISTORY LESSON REQUIREDThe title "Gary Cooper MGM Movie Legends Collection" is totally midleading here. Gary Cooper was never a part of MGM's hammy stable of contract players in the traditional sense although he did do some films for that studio. The films here aren't among them. "Vera Cruz" was released through United Artists. The other 3 titles were Samuel Goldwyn films also released through United Artists. Sam Goldwyn was never part of MGM. Film history readings will explain, to those interested, how his last name wound up as part of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
In my opinion, MGM has always been about self-aggrandizement and I guess they'll get it any way they can take it. That's too bad as it can create confusion for even arm-chair film researchers studying the old studio system of filmmaking. I always think of post-Thalberg MGM as the "blow-hard" studio with its process packaged films (although there are a healthy number of exceptions).
This Gary Cooper/United Artists collection features 4 terrific films that I highly recommend. I saw a clean print of the rare "The Winning of Barbara Worth" on the big screen a couple of years ago and Cooper's star quality is instantly apparent.
I highly recommend this set.B000Q6774A424A31I3HXMD5H1ELA31I3HXMD5H1ELBenjamin J Burgraff252007-06-15An Entertaining 'Look' at Legendary Gary Cooper! It's a shame that Gary Cooper, today, is largely remembered for only "High Noon", his Hawks and Capra films ("Sergeant York" and "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town"), and as Lou Gehrig in "The Pride of the Yankees"; in his day, he was as sexy and popular as Clark Gable, and more esteemed as a cowboy star than John Wayne!

"Gary Cooper MGM Movie Legends Collection" offers a selection of titles that will, hopefully, spark renewed interest in this most charismatic American 'Original'. While, sadly, the collection offers little in bonus features, and, with the exception of "Barbara Worth", appears to be unremastered (which is why I only give it 4 stars), each film is very entertaining!

"The Winning of Barbara Worth" (1926), was, of course, Coop's breakthrough role, after three years of stunt work and bit parts, and is a bona fide classic. As 'Abe Lee', the young cowboy/surveyor suitor of Vilma Banky, his sexy, natural style would steal the film from star Ronald Colman (in Colman's defense, his role was more restrained, and less interesting). The film, based on a best-selling novel about harnessing the Colorado River to irrigate the desert, garnered great reviews and box office, and gave Coop a spectacular 'start'... (5 stars out of 5)

"The Cowboy and the Lady" (1938), a 'modern-day' Western comedy/romance, presented Coop the way 1930s' audiences loved him best, as a slow-talking, incorruptible cowboy irresistible to women, but a 'gentleman', in the best sense of the word! Falling for the daughter of a Presidential hopeful, posing as a maid (Merle Oberon), he marries her, discovers the charade, then storms into a posh political dinner and speaks so much 'common sense' that her family moves to his ranch! With life-long friend Walter Brennan as his sidekick, this is a real charmer! (5 stars out of 5)

"The Real Glory" (1939), released shortly after his classic version of "Beau Geste", another 'action-oriented' adventure, though lacking the "Geste" polish and style. Coop is a military doctor in the 1906 Philippines, who, with friends David Niven and Broderick Crawford, attempts to help the Filipinos fight off an army of insurgents. Action was never producer Sam Goldwyn's forte, and the film lacks the warmth of a "Gunga Din", although it does offer a rousing climax... (2 1/2 stars out of 5)

"Vera Cruz" (1954), produced by Burt Lancaster and Harold Hecht, is a spectacular, large-scale western, filmed in Mexico. Ex-Confederate Cooper and bandit Lancaster are uneasy partners guarding Denise Darcel and millions in gold, during the Mexican Revolution. While the aging Coop wasn't well during production, he still gives a solid performance, although overshadowed by Burt's flashy portrayal; the film offers a
fabulous supporting cast, including Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Cesar Romero, and Jack Elam. "Vera Cruz" was a major influence on Sergio Leone, and has achieved legendary status, among fans of the genre! (5 stars out of 5)
There is a LOT to enjoy, in this Gary Cooper collection!Product DescriptionStudio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 05/13/2008 Run time: 375 minutesAmazon.com It actually underscores the power and distinctiveness of Gary Cooper's movie stardom that this isn't so much a true collection as gleanings from the odds-and-ends table. That's not a knock; three of the four films are solid entertainments and would be well worth recommending on their own. But the only thing unifying them is the beauty and enigma Cooper brought to them, and the professionalism with which he addressed these wide-ranging assignments.
Three of them date from the '20s and '30s and were produced by Samuel Goldwyn. The 1926 silent The Winning of Barbara Worth gave Western stunt man and bit player Cooper his first featured role (by accident--the actor originally cast didn't report for work!). A cowboy whose visionary surveyor father aims to "redeem the desert and make it one fine garden," Cooper's character is the third corner of a romantic triangle, ordained by the Hollywood caste system to lose lifelong sweetheart Vilma Banky to engineer Ronald Colman. Colman has lots more screen time than Cooper and bears the moral-ethical brunt of the eco-conscious drama; he's also surprisingly persuasive wearing a sweat-stained Stetson and trading gunshots with the bad guys (if this were a sound film, Colman could never have gotten away with it). But the camera and the audience are locked onto Cooper whenever he's on screen. In longshot or vulnerable closeup, he's already one of the gods of the cinema. As for the movie, the quality of the print is excellent, its clarity intensified by bronze, yellow, and moonlit-blue tinting that often seems on the verge of resolving into full color. Director Henry King shows a good eye for action and bold vistas, and a visual adventurousness mostly absent from his later work.
Next up chronologically is The Cowboy and the Lady (1938), and the best thing about this misbegotten movie is Garson Kanin's description, in one of his Hollywood memoirs, of how Leo McCarey sold the idea for it to Sam Goldwyn. McCarey was, of course, a comedic master (recently Oscared for directing The Awful Truth), and his exuberant pitch convinced Goldwyn and his staffers that audiences would "piss" themselves laughing at this romantic comedy about a daughter of privilege (Merle Oberon) who falls for a rodeo rider (Cooper) and learns homespun values. Goldwyn paid McCarey off, assigned some writers to the script, then realized there was no real story--"no there there," as Gertrude Stein might have put it. The resultant unfunny and unromantic endeavor oozes bad faith from every pore, with neck-snapping life changes foisted on the hapless Cooper and Oberon from reel to reel, and excruciating scenes (jitterbugging in a drawing room, playing house back on Cooper's ranch) that strain charmlessly for McCarey's patented brand of fey. H.C. Potter directed, understandably without conviction.
We and Cooper are back on track with The Real Glory (1939). The reliable Henry Hathaway helmed this second cousin to his and Cooper's The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, with Cooper as an Army doctor assigned to the Philippine Constabulary on Mindanao in 1906. The movie was well-received when it came out; encountered in the shadow of the Iraq War, its tale of U.S. occupiers trying to help the local populace "stand up" against a fanatical and murderous insurgency takes on new fascination. There are some amazing passages--two horrendous murders by bolo knife--and the final battle sequence puts the CGI-riddled action films of the present day to shame. But the most impressive element is Cooper, and we can't improve on the verdict of that astute film critic Graham Greene: "Mr. Cooper ... has never acted better.... Watch him inoculate [Andrea King] against cholera--the casual jab of the needle, and the dressing slapped on while he talks, as though a thousand arms had taught him where to stab and he doesn't have to think any more."
For the final film in the set we jump into the '50s--the century's and Cooper's. Vera Cruz (1954) casts him as a former Confederate officer who's ridden into Emperor Maximilian's Mexico, hoping to make a fortune in the new civil war south of the border so that he can rebuild his own devastated homeland. Costar Burt Lancaster (whose company Hecht-Lancaster was producing) plays another mercenary, a real sociopath, and it's fascinating to watch these two stellar icons of very different Hollywood eras make common cause--Lancaster at the height of his grinning-predator mode, Cooper an aging knight whose aim is still true. Director Robert Aldrich keeps finding dynamic uses for the SuperScope format and flavorfully fills it with sublime uglies like Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam, Charles Horvath, Jack Lambert, and Charles Buchinsky-about-to-become-Bronson. Pieces of this movie found their way into the dreams of Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone. --Richard T. The documentary that accompanies the film is very good too. Narrated by Courtney Love it really enlightens us to the woman who was "IT!" Clara Bow was a great movie star and a lot of fun!

i know that elinor glyn's definition of "it" included the statement, "IT is self-confidence and indifference as to whether you are pleasing or not..." and that in the movie, betty lou does care whether or not she is pleasing to mr. waltham. however, she still definitely has "it" - she's attractive, she's vivacious, she's well-liked by both men and women, and she has a great personality. clara bow just makes betty lou someone you wish you could be.

the clara bow documentary is very interesting, but doesn't go deep enough into her life story. and why the heck did they pick courtney love to narrate it? i would have preferred someone connected with classic movies or at least an anonymous voice over person.

Clara Bow is beautiful and complex and compelling. She radiates sexuality and draws you in like a magnet. The story is a bit far-fetched as I doubt a department store magnet would fall for a shop clerk in today's times, but cute nonethless.

Her personal life as a child was horrible but I believe that is where her "edge" came from. She had nothing to lose. Clara has been gone over 40 years but she is so alive in this film that it is hard to imagine her
Long live Clara Bow!Product DescriptionThe quintessential flapper clara bow is captured at the height of her charm in this bubbly fable of a new york shopgirl who hunts the heart of a young millionaire. Studio: Kino International Release Date: 02/20/2001 Starring: Clara Bow Run time: 72 minutes Director: Clarence BadgerAmazon.comIt is famous for turning cutie-pie Clara Bow into, as critic David Thomson described her, "the first mass-market sex symbol." Somewhat overshadowed by this phenomenon is the fact that It is also a terrifically entertaining picture, an effortless cruise through the manners and morals of the flapper era. Bow plays a shopgirl who sets her saucer eyes on her boss (Antonio Moreno); it isn't terribly hard to land him, since she possesses dazzle, charm, spunk... in a word, "It." And if we're still not sure what "It" is, there's a moment of high camp hilarity when matronly author Elinor Glyn, who penned the original definition of "It," strides through the movie and delivers herself of its meaning. Actually, Bow's delightful performance does more to define "It" than anything else, and her unabashed sexiness (which didn't play well after sound came in) clearly sets the future course for Marilyn Monroe and Madonna. --Robert Horton0815410255Clara Bow: Runnin' WildB00005M1ZOShow Off/The Plastic AgeB000HT3QBOPandora's Box - Criterion CollectionB000YRY7VCTCM Archives - Forbidden Hollywood Collection, Vol. 2 (The Divorcee / A Free Soul / Night Nurse / Three on a Match / Female)B0000633SYA Fool There Was163350General163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video466680Drama163355Silent Films163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video722744011General AAS163355Silent Films163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291259Biography291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video300411Comedy163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video411230Austin, William409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413666Bonner, Priscilla411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418604Cooper, Gary416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418754Corrigan, Lloyd416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434178Love, Courtney432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435058Maltin, Leonard434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438066Moreno, Antonio434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video462474Sternberg, Josef Von403580( S )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357299011Silent357275011By Theme357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579528( I )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video562085011Up to 1939562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR1VJ427BQHG74DRedheads Part Two, those in flims, TV and culture.R36Q1MTIG9JGGAIT GIRLS and DAUGHTERS OF DECADENCE1HKFD911PLV06My Gary Cooper: The Strong Silent Type22FYJDU1WJ91RMy Clara Bow: She's Got It (And Plenty of It, Brother)2OQ683CQY88Z3Top 10 6exy Classic Girls No Particular Order ALL HOT :P372E4LBBZWKETLouise Brooks & the 1920's15KMTSBDEYR3ZThe 1920's on film and on the page1EDZWM564VJ30The Roaring Twenties9Q5NR3YC52P1Roaring TwentiesF07GRXVMH44PEverything Sexy!B00068NWLUhttp://www.amazon.com/Farewell-Arms-Gary-Cooper/dp/B00068NWLU%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00068NWLU52602http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YSD82BTPL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YSD82BTPL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YSD82BTPL.jpg500353http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YSD82BTPL._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YSD82BTPL._SL75_.jpg7553http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YSD82BTPL._SL160_.jpg160113http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YSD82BTPL.jpg500353Gary CooperHelen HayesAdolphe MenjouMary PhilipsJack La Rue1.33:1UnratedDVDImage EntertainmentCharles LangBenjamin GlazerBenjamin GlazerEdward A.

This terrible adaptation of Hemingway's novel misses the point entirely (***spoiler*** it literally ends with Gary Cooper holding Helen Hayes in his arms and intoning "Peace! Peace!"), features wooden performances from both leads, and feels long even at 85 minutes; not all black and white movies are classics--this one is just plain bad.B00068NWLU51A1G5Q9HBN0EGDVA1G5Q9HBN0EGDVBobby UnderwoodstarlighthotelBakersfield, California United States12007-10-08"I don't really live at all when I'm not with you...."
"I'm afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it. And sometimes I see you dead in it." -- Helen Hayes

Frank Borzage had a romanticism and sensitivity to his silent work matched by none, and when sound came along he continued to put a delicate touch on films that required something more than just direction. With Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms" he brought this romantic tragedy to the screen with a dark and foreboding glow. Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes portray the doomed couple battling for moments of happiness while bombs explode everywhere around them.

Cooper is Frederic, an American driving in the Italian Ambulance Core who meets and falls in love with lovely Katherine (Helen Hayes). She is a nurse and both are simply trying to outlast the reality of war, any romantic notions crushed long ago by the parade of damaged young men. Borzage uses Charles Lang's photography to frame their old-fashioned romance against images of the first war which engulfed the entire globe. Rather than a grand film about war, however, Borzage makes his point by creating a warm and intimate glow to a romance filled with sweet moments of love, yet surrounded with doom.

Through a timid kiss on a public street, a gift of a shared St. Anthony necklace to guard her sweetheart from harm, Katherine's romantically embellished description of her shabby hotel room when writing her love, and a marriage ceremony on a hospital bed where they pretend they can smell orange blossoms on the wind, Borzage creates something timeless while at the same time showing that true love once meant something. When Frederic comes back after their first time together, the viewer knows long before he gets there it is because he needs to let her know it really meant something to him.

Adolphe Menjou is Frederic's misguided party pal who can't understand and tries to interfere, then has a change of heart and helps them reunite under dangerous circumstances, but perhaps too late. For those who haven't seen it, I won't ruin the experience with too many details. The final shot of doves shot against the heavens has much the same effect as the final shot of Borzage's "Three Comrades." This old-fashioned and tender film is an early sound masterpiece anyone with a romantic heart will enjoy. B00068NWLU41ATJGPHQ2XPP9WATJGPHQ2XPP9WA. Anderson22007-09-22A Farewell To SeriousnessAs a fan of old Hollywood movies and stars, I went for "Farewell" because the name carries so much weight in American literature and film. Who can resist these titans of cinema? Well, perhaps those who need a well developed story line and believable script.
One must extend his or her sense of the age in which this film was made. Editing and paper cut-out effects make this seem incredibly amateurish by modern standards. Emotions are so overwrought that it could have been a silent movie.
Gary Cooper steals his best friend's girl with no remorse. Helen Hay's character is equally spineless right up to her death scene which is hammy enough to bring a smirk to George Washington's face on Mt. Rushmore. Adolphe Menjou gets his revenge by wrecking both their lives.
" A Farewell to Arms" is a paraphrase of a French saying meaning desertion. They got it right in the movie.
Having said all that - this film got an Oscar for cimematography. The bar must have been petty low back then. Perhaps when this was made in 1934 the popular sentiment was that ALL soldiers should desert.
In conclusion, I liked the movie, but I understand from whence it came. With the price of movie tickets about the same as the price of this DVD, I am happy with my purchase.
My advice is this: This is a very good, very old movie. Watch it to see Hollywood in it's Black & White glory days.B00068NWLU41A9I40WFF40R4A9I40WFF40R4H. F. CorbinFoster CorbinATLANTA, GA USA22007-06-26Fine Performances by Cooper and HayesReleased just four years after Ernest Hemingway's novel was published, the screen version of A FAREWELL TO ARMS, directed by Frank Borzage, plays fast and loose with the novel's story. One big departure is that Major Rinaldi (Adolphe Menjou), the surgeon who is Henry's (Gary Cooper) friend and drinking buddy in Hemingway's work, becomes the villain here in that he intercepts Henry and Catherine's (Helen Hayes) letters. There are other changes as well. The priest blesses their marriage-- sort of-- for the 1932 censors I suppose. But then the movie is not the novel and doesn't have to be.

Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes give fine performances. It is easy to see why Mr. Cooper was a leading man of the first order, and Ms. Hayes' acting ability of course is legendary. The ending of the movie is quite operatic and worthy of Wagner. Charles Lang won an Oscar for the cinematography. The cruelty and absurdity of war works well shot in black and white.

To have been released 65 years ago, this film surprisingly is not much dated at all.
DescriptionAn American soldier and an English nurse share an ill-fated romance in World War I. Based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway.Amazon.com essential videoThe 1932 version of A Farewell to Arms owes as much to the shimmering house style of Paramount Pictures as it does the novel by Ernest Hemingway. If Hemingway purists can get past the romanticizing of the book, however, this film offers its own glossy appeal. On the Italian front in World War I, an American ambulance driver (Gary Cooper) falls in love with a nurse (Helen Hayes, before she became the official First Lady of the American The-a-tah). Cooper was a Hemingway friend in real life, and later played the hero of Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls; his boyish simplicity is just right for director Frank Borzage's heartfelt approach. Image Entertainment's DVD release is a stunningly gorgeous improvement on the muddy prints of this film that had been circulating for years, a fitting tribute to the Oscar-winning cinematography of ace cameraman Charles Lang (this is the kind of lush black and white that can capture the glow from a cigarette as it plays across Cooper's darkened face--a breathtaking touch). The jaded battle scenes show the influence of the hit film version of All Quiet on the Western Front, especially in a gripping montage depicting Cooper's progress alone through the war zone. Hemingway would have none of it, of course; he once disdainfully wrote that "in the first picture version Lt. Henry deserted because he didn't get any mail and then the whole Italian Army went along, it seems, to keep him company." This is first and foremost a love story, however, and as such it succeeds beautifully, right through to the remarkably intense ending. --Robert Horton0783229488For Whom the Bell TollsB000KGGJ0YAll Quiet on the Western Front (Universal Cinema Classics)B0007PALN4A Farewell to ArmsB0000AUHQTThe Great GatsbyB00005JKF6From Here to Eternity163350General163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722753011General AAS163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video909842Military Life909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video909832Women During Wartime909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video291342Drama586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video722772011General AAS586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081770114-for-3 Drama1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video410894Armetta, Henry409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413082Bing, Herman411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418604Cooper, Gary416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418740Corrado, Gino416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422152Emery, Gilbert421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427362Hayes, Helen426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433832Lloyd, Doris432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436964Menjou, Adolphe434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video441480Philips, Mary440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video441978Porcasi, Paul440340( P )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444588Rue, Jack La442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video454968Borzage, Frank454404( B )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579522( F )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video12917411Today's Deals on DVD & Blu-ray44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video388863011DVD Deals388861011Features & Promotions (special_merchandising_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video562085011Up to 1939562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR35ZOAW7YLH0ZP1932-1933 Academy Award Winners & Nominees on DVD & VHSR2RGSCGXVV7ZDUIf you want to discover Gary Cooper (1901 - 1961)R2C0KONGA7SPU1Pre-WWII wargamers favorite black&white movies3PZKRVIF9VAGYRemembering HELEN HAYES2J30PPZWEQO0ZThe dead poet's Film Library, Part 1126FNJTJ6AR5FAHunting for HemingwayB000NIBUTOhttp://www.amazon.com/Wedding-Night-Gary-Cooper/dp/B000NIBUTO%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000NIBUTO52170http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qA8-9c6HL._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qA8-9c6HL._SL160_.jpg160116http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qA8-9c6HL.jpg500361http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qA8-9c6HL._SL30_.jpg3022http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qA8-9c6HL._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qA8-9c6HL._SL160_.jpg160116http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51qA8-9c6HL.jpg500361Gary CooperAnna StenRalph BellamyHelen VinsonSig Ruman1.33:1NR (Not Rated)DVDTWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTGregg TolandStuart HeislerSamuel GoldwynEdith FitzgeraldEdwin H. He and his wife (Helen Vinson) move to a disused family farm while he works on his next book. Polish immigrants have settled in the area, and one offers to buy several acres as a wedding gift for his soon to be married daughter (Anna Sten). Delighted, the wife heads back to New York with the cash, while the writer stays behind to work on a new book, inspired by what he sees in the Polish community.

A friendship soon blossoms between the Gary Cooper and Anna Sten characters. When he complains that he doesn't feel like writing, she reminds him that he is supposed to be a professional. "What would happen to my poor cow if I said I didn't feel like milking her?", she asks.

They develop a deep, sensitive relationship, but he is married and she is engaged to a loutish farmer (over) played by Ralph Bellamy. Neither is willing to take the first step toward a sexual relationship, though both seem willing to leave the door open for the other to do so.

Russian actress Anna Sten is wonderful in her part and it's puzzling why she never made it to Hollywood stardom. BTW: The Cole Porter song "Anything Goes" has a verse about Anna Sten.

Knopf). He's perfectly paired with Anna Sten, the lovely Russian actress who never quite fulfilled her potential in Hollywood.

Struggling New York writer Tony Barrett (Gary Cooper) moves back to his family home in Connecticut. There, he becomes friends with a group of Polish emigrees, in particular Manya (Anna Sten). Quite soon, the friendship of Tony and Manya blossoms into a forbidden romance, until the re-appearance of Tony's wife (Helen Vinson) and the wedding plans set by Manya's tradition-bound family threaten to tear them apart...

For fans of Gary Cooper, THE WEDDING NIGHT will provide another side of the versatile actor, who managed to effortlessly shift between drama, comedy and western roles in his early career. Anna Sten is heartbreaking as Manya, a character which might well have become too sweet or sentimental in the hands of a lesser actress.

Russian-born Anna Sten was brought to Hollywood by producer Samuel Goldwyn, who attempted to groom her as a leading lady to rival the likes of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. She made her American debut in 1934's "Nana"; THE WEDDING NIGHT is arguably the best film Sten appeared in during her relatively-brief Hollywood career. Precious few of her movies have surfaced on DVD (We Live Again and Exile Express are the only ones that I know of apart from THE WEDDING NIGHT).
It's wonderful having this superb movie on DVD. It's been released as part of the MGM Movie Legends series along with three more Gary Cooper favourites (The Adventures of Marco Polo, Ball of Fire, and Casanova Brown).B000NIBUTO50A1J5HWUVZUNTHTA1J5HWUVZUNTHTR. This Movie ages well unlike a lot of other films of this era.Product DescriptionStudio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 02/05/2008 Run time: 84 minutes Rating: NrAmazon.comOne of the lesser-known satisfactions in Gary Cooper's career is this 1935 King Vidor film, an offbeat blend of romance, comedy, and tragedy. It begins in screwball territory: Cooper plays a novelist whose partying ways have stalled his career and made his new manuscript unpublishable. He and wife Helen Vinson like the high life (any resemblance to Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald is probably intentional), and she doesn't stick around while he tries to write a new book in a quiet Connecticut country house. The isolation puts him into proximity with a heartfelt young immigrant girl (Anna Sten), whose Polish community provides a subject for his new book.
If you think Cooper was a merely the High Noon guy, a lanky Western hero, this is one of the movies (among many) that dispel the idea: his utter naturalness is a gold standard for a certain kind of movie-star acting. Directing him on the set the first day, Vidor worried about the star's mumbling and forgetfulness with dialogue. "Imagine my amazement," Vidor later wrote, "when I watched our first day's work on the screen and observed and heard a performance that overflowed with charm and personality." Anna Sten was another issue: the Russian actress had been brought to the U.S. with great fanfare by producer Samuel Goldwyn, because he wanted to have his own foreign Garbo/Dietrich under contract. Her cool presence failed to generate audience interest, and Goldwyn gave up on her after The Wedding Night. She's a problem, but Cooper keeps it going, and the movie itself is unexpectedly warm. --Robert HortonB000NIBUTECasanova BrownB000NIBUT4Ball of FireB0012GVMIAEasy Living (Universal Cinema Classics)B0012GVMIKMidnight (Universal Cinema Classics)B000N3T0FKNo Man of Her Own (Universal Cinema Classics)163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291298Melodrama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video572116Marriage163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video572118Romance163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video745722Star-Crossed Lovers163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722753011General AAS163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video300399Drama163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video412528Bellamy, Ralph411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video414242Brennan, Walter411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418604Cooper, Gary416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419604Dale, Esther419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439872O'Keefe, Dennis439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447284Snegoff, Leonid444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447920Sten, Anna444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450980Vinson, Helen450514( V )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video463106Vidor, King463048( V )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579556( W )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video562085011Up to 1939562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2RGSCGXVV7ZDUIf you want to discover Gary Cooper (1901 - 1961)
