Usher Raymond is another statistic in this sad but true fact. In The Mix is 95 minutes of pure torture and I dont reccomend it to anyone. <br /> <br />Premise: Daryl(Usher), a local DJ is asked to take care of Dolly(Emanuelle Chriqui), a daughter of a well known mob boss(Chazz Palminteri). After taking a bullet for her, Daryl later falls for Dolly and of course the father isnt happy about it. Trouble brews as one of the mob boss's henchmen plans to betray his own boss to run the establishment himself. <br /> <br />Opinion: This movie is visual Nyquil. Usher cant act and Emanuelle Chriqui is so wooden all she's missing is the woodpecker. Plus what would this movie be without stereotypes? There's the Italian father who doesnt want his daughter to date the black man. There's the wegro who is so annoying that he makes Jamie Kennedy's character "Malibu" look like James Bond. There's the black men brandishing pistols in a card game and there is the step-n-fetchit character played by Kevin Hart. Chazz Palminteri is usually good in movies but here he is as bland as paper machier. The love scenes are boring also because there is no chemistry between Usher and Emanuelle. They're just going through the motions. The script is terrible and the action scenes are about as exciting as a presidential address given by Sling Blade. Nothing about this movie is redeemable. Usher is a great singer but as an actor he makes Method Man look like Marlon Brando. Unless you like being put to sleep by a movie you would do well to skip this one. R&B star Usher makes an assured screen debut in this mix of mob movie and romantic comedy. Chazz Palminenteri co-stars as the friendly don who recruits family friend Darrell (Usher) to play bodyguard for his daughter Dolly (Emmanuelle Chiriqi). She and Darrell have been friends since they were kids but the seven years since they last saw each other have changed things. She's grown into a headstrong young law student with a yen for yoga and a smug yuppie boyfriend (Geoff Stults); he's grown into an ultra-smooth chick magnet with dreams of starting his own record company. They're destined for each other but there's not only the racial issue in their way--someone's trying to take over the family business via treachery and bullets and Darrell's right in the thick of things. When the interracial romance isn't heating up the screen there's plenty of raucous comedy supplied by Anthony Fazio as Dolly's pseudo-gangsta younger brother Kevin Hart as Darrell's loudmouthed co-DJ and a bulldog with an unfortunate digestion problem. Director Ron Underwood takes his time going around the more edgy turns in the script giving the actors room to stretch out and get comfortable in their characters and surroundings and helping the film transcend its more formulaic elements (it's an obvious nod to the 1992 Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner chestnut THE BODYGUARD). He must come up with the money within a month or else he'll be killed. His only solution is the completion of his book, which will bring in enough money to settle the debt. The problem however, is that he's got writer's block and he hasn't even started yet. He is therefore forced to hire a stenographer to assist him in the writing. Addessi (Director), is right on <br />target in reconfirming the American Mob stereotype that most movie <br />goers already have by conjuring a tale of men born and raised in the <br />Italian section of Brooklyn, New York. There is one exception: the <br />story takes place in the 1990's, in an era dominated by computers and <br />technology, wherin many have a whole range of life and work options <br />at their disposal that wasn't the case at the turn of 20th century. <br /> <br />Some fans of the Godfather series will rent this DVD, perhaps <br />criminologists will be keen on it, and others curious of the <br />lifestyle and sociological aspects of running a book business of bets <br />and gambling too. <br /> <br />This work is clearly ultra-violent, and doesn't shy away from showing <br />the ugly reality behind various life situations, underworld <br />individuals controlling a given territory in a city, protection and <br />gambling rackets, etc. As such, it's an underworld 101 course for the <br />younger viewers, including frequent cussing over the entire work. <br /> <br />Most lacking, is the almost complete absence of great music, or any <br />music for that matter. Questionable, is the rabid microcosm focusing <br />on Italian pals who grew up together and open a risky gambling joint <br />venture. <br /> <br />Another aspect it the total absence of law enforcement in the <br />narrative, as if none existed in the world, except for a warning to <br />be careful when talking over the phone, comparing it to a stick of <br />dynamite from phone taps. <br /> <br />The better aspects of WANNABES, is the way the film explains to <br />viewers the risk and rewards of being a bookie, requiring tough <br />collection of bad debts, involvement in loan-sharking, the stress of <br />being either a leader or a brown noser to the leader essential in <br />maintaining prestige and progressing. Once entered, it's very <br />difficult to leave as a means to earn a living. <br /> <br />Gambling being a disease, it turns neighbor against neighbor, <br />impoverishes the weak willed against their propensity to gamble, <br />beyond their abilities to repayl it's a zero-sum game for services <br />rendered that have little or no socially redeeming value. <br /> <br />The rivalry of up-and-comers keeps viewers on the edge of their <br />seats. Strip joints, backrooms of pubs, other sections of NYC, <br />Spanish Harlem are shown. <br /> <br />The action will scare many law abiding citizens, as young men ride <br />together in a car, looking for trouble, with car vandalism and <br />baseball bat agressions intimidating bad debtors. <br /> <br />The story steers clear of absurdity and comedy, with simple dialog, <br />at times, tugging at people's heart strings through recollections of <br />childhood memories of baseball, sports, girlfriends, growing into <br />maturity. <br /> <br />Unfortunately, WANNABES is predictable and many will shy away from it <br />just from the unsavory language used over the 90 mins by the <br />protagonists. Usher Raymond is another statistic in this sad but true fact. In The Mix is 95 minutes of pure torture and I dont reccomend it to anyone. <br /> <br />Premise: Daryl(Usher), a local DJ is asked to take care of Dolly(Emanuelle Chriqui), a daughter of a well known mob boss(Chazz Palminteri). After taking a bullet for her, Daryl later falls for Dolly and of course the father isnt happy about it. Trouble brews as one of the mob boss's henchmen plans to betray his own boss to run the establishment himself. <br /> <br />Opinion: This movie is visual Nyquil. Usher cant act and Emanuelle Chriqui is so wooden all she's missing is the woodpecker. Plus what would this movie be without stereotypes? There's the Italian father who doesnt want his daughter to date the black man. There's the wegro who is so annoying that he makes Jamie Kennedy's character "Malibu" look like James Bond. There's the black men brandishing pistols in a card game and there is the step-n-fetchit character played by Kevin Hart. Chazz Palminteri is usually good in movies but here he is as bland as paper machier. The love scenes are boring also because there is no chemistry between Usher and Emanuelle. They're just going through the motions. The script is terrible and the action scenes are about as exciting as a presidential address given by Sling Blade. Nothing about this movie is redeemable. Usher is a great singer but as an actor he makes Method Man look like Marlon Brando. Unless you like being put to sleep by a movie you would do well to skip this one. Also, this first season is overwhelmed with constant voiceovers by the Cogliostro character. He is constantly telling us what Spawn is going through emotionally, which is sometimes helpful in providing information on Spawn's past and present situations, but only until he starts repeating himself. Once you've heard about how Spawn is going through a deep inner conflict, struggling to regain his humanity, I promise you won't need to hear it again. Rather than hear him tell me about Spawn, I would prefer to see Spawn show us what he is going through on his own, especially with the wonderful voice work for the Spawn character by Keith David. These two aspects of this first season almost overshadow the basic themes and characters that make Spawn an interesting story to begin with. This one I should have listened to the majority of reviews for, but for the cheapo price it was, I took a gamble with my fingers crossed in hopes it was something better then what it was being acclaimed as. <br /> <br />Nuts! I wasted 3 bucks on this :( <br /> <br />Like I said, I love parody movies, but this one fails big time to hit the mark on what "parody" stands for. It attempts to parody Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Sister Act, Forrest Gump and Nell... but yet, fails to find a comedic approach to it. <br /> <br />It's more like an un-funny "mock" movie then a parody. Making out the pulp fiction characters (travolta and Jackson) as hitmen disguised as rodent killers who accidentally walk in on the reservoir dog characters which leads to killing a woman who has sent Forrest gump of with a script thats needed who ends up falling in love Nell might have sounded decent on paper, but it fails on screen with no comedy to it. <br /> <br />Some parts of this I thought where a decent idea, but there more the kind of things you notice in parody movies that you think it's not laugh out loud comedy, but it makes you smile, where as this movie, those smiles are the highest jokes in this thing. <br /> <br />There is nothing funny about Sister Act style nuns with guns and the parody attempt of Uma Thurman's Pulp Fiction character being a fat food junkie had a chance to be funny, but only succeeded in one scene where you think she is buying drugs and turns out shes buying chocolate and ends up having a diabetes like attack cause she needs the sugar and ends up being stuck with a needle...you know what scene its mocking in Pulp Fiction and thats about the only thing that did make me laugh a little in this whole thing. <br /> <br />The thing I found the funniest about this whole movie is a bonus feature... it was an interview with Julie Brown who plays Mimi Hungry (Uma Thurmans parody) who was being asked in an interview what makes a good parody movie... i turned it off right then laughing as I thought, "After seeing this movie, I know whatever she says is WRONG! <br /> <br />The other funny thing is it has a commentary track from the producer... I didn't listen to it, but it's funny that there is one on this god awful attempt to parody movies. If he is pointing out how good he thinks the movie is and explaining how something came to be, then he must be completely delusional. He must have written the episodes for Drew Cary that bombed, cause they never kept him on as a writer and after seeing this film, I can see why. <br /> <br />The only reason I finally gave into this is cause I liked some of Julie Browns songs in the 80's, but she does not bring any comedy as the leading role in this film. Not even Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson) brung anything to this film. <br /> <br />However, I can say some positives about this movie which I give it the 2 star rating for instead of 1. <br />- It had a couple of decent scenes. Not enough, but it has SOME. <br />- It's a hell of a lot better then "Epic Movie" or "Fatal Instinct" so it's not the worst parody attempt ever. <br />- Julie Brown is always a good perv. <br />- And you have to laugh that they added a commentary track to a movie no one wants to see, let alone will ever hear the commentary track. <br /> <br />so, on that note, if you love parody movies and you feel you HAVE to see this before you die, well, check it out. Paul Dinello seems to be visibly suffering as he struggles to bring something worthwhile to his version of John Travolta's character from " Pulp Fiction ".
