Worse than that, this is really a straight rip off of the original "House of the Damned" that was directed by Sean Weathers, an independent film maker from New York City. He shot the original "House of the Damned" in 2002, with a zero budget and made a movie that is far superior to this piece of hot garbage. At the time the orginal "House of the Damned" was relegated to word of mouth being that Sean Weathers didn't have a distribution deal, but after forming his own production company Full Circle Filmworks, the original House of the Damned is for sale on Amazon as well and I can attest that the difference between this piece of crap and the Sean Weathers movie is night and day. Check it out for yourself! B000GIXEVI43A1LJR5IS0B6ADXA1LJR5IS0B6ADXThe Straw ManJ.E. HoppockAloof October on April's Birthday42007-10-15A horror movie in simplistic terms"The House of the Damned" is a perfect example that production doesn't have to be millions of dollars in order to create a good, spooky movie. I purchased this movie for only $5.00 in a retail store. Since I am a big fan of older horror movies, I figured it was worth the gambit for the economical cost. I have to admit in hindsight I was very pleased with what I bought.

This movie is barely over an hour long, yet never seems to drag or get boring. The plot is rather simple; an architect is offered a proposition by his friend, who is a lawyer, to appraise the value of an old castle/house in the mountains of California. The architect goes up to this spooky castle/house with his wife and end up staying there as they assess the real-estate. The first night in the castle all sorts of creepy things happen. Which of is a perfect set up for an old horror movie. These conditions continue as the state of affairs comes to a head.

I won't give a great deal of details away, but I will say this is a really good horror/mystery movie. This movie was made in 1963 and is shot in black and white. I found it to be made in good taste and actuality wasn't campy. The characters were believable, likeable and weren't over the top. Minimalism is the best way to describe the premise of plot, but the story is still good quality. The castle/house is also a paramount factor in this film. The cinematography, lighting, or lack there of because shadows play a role in this movie, gave this film a flare of the ominous and the creepiness of a silent vexing.

Overall, "The House of the Damned" isn't what it appears to be as far as horror/mystery movies go. I found it be unique when juxtaposition to other horror films of the time. This would be a great movie to watch around Halloween, at night or a Sunday afternoon. The DVD presents a clear picture of the movie. As for bonus features, has a poster gallery and the original trailer/preview for "The House of the Damned".B000GIXEVI41A12X2J7AVZ04IQA12X2J7AVZ04IQR. GawlittaMilwaukee, Wisconsin USA12007-10-07Early 60's schlock, fun and sillyThe Spotlight Review by "cookieman" covered it all. A good review of a not that good film. Indeed, "House of the Damned" stole from "House on Haunted Hill", "The Old Dark House", "Freaks", and a few others. What I'm compelled to add, is that, next to Beverly Garland and Gloria Talbott, Merry Anders is just about the best B-movie actress of that era. I always enjoy seeing her. I guess she was locked into a contract at 20th/Fox, and never recovered. Too bad. She had a lot of class and sass and moxy. I remember stuff like that. The DVD transfer is very fine. The ending is a let-down; too bad it's blabbed away in the trailer and liner notes (as Mr. Cookieman said...) Some spooky moments, and typical of the 60's fare. Don't expect anything to make you jump out of your chair. Written by Harry Spalding (One Little Indian, The Watcher in the Woods) and produced and directed by Maury Dexter (The Day Mars Invaded Earth, The Mini-Skirt Mob), the film stars Ron Foster (Cage of Evil, Operation Bottleneck) and Merry Anders (The Hypnotic Eye, The Time Travelers, Women of the Prehistoric Planet). Also appearing is Richard `Whooping' Crane (The Devil's Partner, Surf Party), Erika Peters (Mr. Sardonicus, Monstrosity), Dal McKennon (The Misadventures of Merlin Jones), who provided the voice of Gumby on the late 1950s Art Clokey television show, and Richard Kiel (Eegah, The Longest Yard), probably best known as the hulking, metal mouthed henchman Jaws from the Bond films The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979).

Ron Foster plays Scott Campbell, an architect who gets a job offer to survey a rather large and remote Californian mansion called Rochester Castle from his friend Joe Schiller (Crane) who happens to be a lawyer whose firm is handling the estate. As Scott and his wife Nancy (Anders) arrive, they discover the joint, which was built by some nutty heirless long since put away, isn't really a castle, but is more in the motif of early Spanish/American Dracula. Anyway, after retrieving the keys (thirteen of them, to be exact) from a local real estate man, along with getting a bit of exposition with regards to the last tenant, a man named Arbuckle who just up and disappeared mysteriously, the couple set up shop, and we soon learn perhaps the house isn't as uninhabited as most everyone seems to believe. During the night the keys are stolen, but then mysteriously returned the next day with two missing (there's other strangeness afoot as lights work sporadically and doors seem to be locking and unlocking themselves). Before Scott and Nancy can uncover the mystery of the missing keys (and which doors they go to), a woman named Loy (Peters) makes the scene (she's Joe's wife...seems Joe was planning on making a weekend out of it by he and his wife meeting up with Scott and Nancy). Shortly after Joe appears, has a spat with his wife, and Loy decides to hit the bricks but gets a surprise on her way out in the form of a shirtless Richard Kiel. Realizing Loy is still on the premises (her car is still out front), Scott, Nancy, and Joe begin looking for her (Joe wants to avoid any unnecessary publicity by getting the police involved), and Nancy sees something she wishes she hadn't (I could tell you what it was, but I won't). Seems the house has plenty of secrets, most of them behind the locked doors for which the keys have gone missing, but never fear as all shall be revealed, one way or another...

If you're interested in this film and have yet to see it, do not watch the included trailer or read the blurb on the back of the DVD case as both give away some fairly key details. I've provided a good bit of set up, but I tried to carefully avoid spilling any of the juiciest beans. Also, if you look at the DVD cover art, you may get the impression this is a recently released feature, but know it's a black and white film released back in the early sixties. Also, the bit on the cover that states '13 keys to unleash the living dead' is partially fitting as there are thirteen keys within the story, but it really has nothing to do with any `living dead', at least not in a literal sense. Obviously this was just a skeevy marketing attempt to lure potential, unsuspecting DVD buyers into hucking out their hard earned dough for the disc. I don't mind studios playing up the sensational aspects of a film in order to sell it, but they really should keep it within the context of the feature. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this movie, but if you're coming into it expecting zombies and their ilk rending the flesh of the living, you're going to be sorely disappointed. The film was more akin to William Castle's House on Haunted Hill (1959), sans the theatrical elements and, of course, Vincent Price. The film is short, with a runtime of about 62 minutes (I think it ended a little too soon), spending a good deal of time developing an ookie eeriness that comes across well. It will seem tame by today's standards, but for those who can appreciate spooky fun, it's definitely worth checking out. The actors did well enough, as none of them really stood out as being really good or really bad, but just solid. The strongest aspect, to me at least, was Maury Dexter's direction. He obviously knew what he was doing in terms of developing and delivering tension. I did find the abruptness of the ending kind of odd, but on the flipside I enjoyed it due to the fact of its anti-climatic nature (not every story needs to end with a bang).

The picture, presented in both widescreen (2.35:1) anamorphic and fullscreen (1.33:1), looks beautiful on this 20th Century Fox DVD release, coming across very sharp and cleanly (the DVD is double sided, so the `A' side contains the fullscreen format while the `B' side has the widescreen version). As far as the audio, it's available in both Dolby Digital mono and stereo, and is on par with the picture quality. In terms of extras provided, there's an original theatrical trailer, a poster gallery (containing three images), and subtitles available in English, Spanish, and French.

Cookieman108

By the way, I'm sure some will make suppositional ties of this film and another, more controversial feature released back in 1932 by a director with the initials `TB', but any presumed linkage between the two would be purely superficial, in my opinion.
The film has many unintentionally funny scenes and dialogue. The first part of the film centers around the citing of a saber-toothed tiger. They use a live tiger for the shots of the animal running through the woods and it doesn't have saber teeth! When they go in for a close up, they use a ridiculous looking stuff animal tiger with some walrus tusk shoved in it's mouth!LOL!.....It's hysterical!

When the film finally gets through it's ludicrous dialogue sequences it turns into a 'Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' type of movie were the crazed Dr. who transformed a house cat into the saber-toothed tiger decides it's time to try the serum on himself. This has hilarious results as the man transforms into a "Neanderthal Man" that looks like a cross between "Bingo" from 'The Banana Splits' and "Wolfie from 'The Groovy Goolies'.......needless to say.......I was in pain from laughing so hard!

This movie is, among many things, one of those cheapies you use to catch on late-night fright fests back in the day before all-night infomercials took over (staying up late has never been fun since). It's got everything needed to qualify as a bonafide, deep-fried cheesy classic: Cheap production, very flimsy plot, laughable action scenes, dialogue, and make-up effects, and over-the-top background music. Perfect.

You get The Neanderthal Man (1953)...co-written by Aubrey Wisberg (The Man From Planet X, Hercules in New York) and Jack Pollexfen (The Son of Dr. Jekyll, Return to Treasure Island), and directed by Ewald André Dupont, who's better known for his earlier works like the 1928 silent classic Moulin Rouge. The Neanderthal Man stars Robert Shayne (Indestructible Man, Kronos, Teenage Cave Man), Joyce Terry (The Beatniks), and Richard Crane (Guns Don't Argue, The Alligator People), whom some old timers may remember from the mid 1960s television series "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger", as the title character.
Seems something in California's High Sierras be viciously killing wildlife cattle, and folks are jittery, especially a hunter named Wheeler, who swears up and down he saw a giant mountain lion with tusks prowling about, but of course everyone thinks he's either telling tall tales, drunk, or both, until game warden George Oakes (Long) becomes a believer after a perilous experience with the creature driving along a lonely, mountain road. Oakes then contacts Dr. Ross Harkness (Crane), an assistant director of zoological research in Los Angeles (and also obviously a walking advertisement for the Brylcreem Corporation) who skeptically makes the trip out. Through a matter of chance, they all end up at Professor Clifford Groves' (Shayne) home, one he shares with his daughter Jan (Terry), and their deaf/mute Hispanic housekeeper Celia (Quinn). Seems Groves, a contemptuous fellow, has some crackpot theory about how Neanderthal man was just as, if not more, intelligent as modern man, a notion his colleagues at the Naturalist Society don't buy off on, at least not without some proof. Well, seems Groves just may have something in the way of proof as he'd developed some sort of de-evolution serum that awakens dormant cells or some such nonsense, one that he's been experimenting on common, household cats...after some initial successes, Groves begins injecting himself with the prehistoric go-go juice, and sure enough, it works! Well, works enough to turn him into a man wearing a bargain basement rubber gorilla mask, one who prowls the countryside, killing folks for no good reason. Ross and Jan soon learn the professor's secrets (after extensive snooping about and even creating their own saber-toothed tiger, which escapes...oops), but their discovery may be too late to save Groves as the authorities, in the form of shotgun wielding posses, are engaged in a prehistoric manhunt, if you will, to destroy the murderous beast terrorizing the small, mountain community. Things finally come to a head as the authorities corner Captain Caveman and he ends up battling a saber-toothed tiger in a not so climatic finale.

The film suffered from a number of problems, the main ones being the lack of decent characters and the relatively poor writing. Richard Crane has all the charisma of a tree stump, exhibiting basically one standard furrowed brow expression throughout the movie. There was very little to support the idea he was supposed to be some sort of scientist, and really, his character had little, if anything, to do for the first hour of the film (the movie runs a scant 78 minutes). As far as Robert Shayne's character of Professor Clifford Groves, he was just such a complete and thorough a-hole throughout the entire movie that I actually didn't care what happened to him by the end. Check out the scene where he's trying to pass his theory off on the Naturalist Society. He's surly, argumentative, and highly accusatory (probably suffering from irritable bowel syndrome) towards those naturally critical of his ideas. It wasn't that they scoffed at his ideas, but they were, rightfully so, skeptical seeing as how he had no actual proof. Tie this in with his ill-tempered attitudes towards his family (watch how he gives his doting fiancée, played by Merrick, an unceremonious boot to the curb), and the fact that he was actually experimenting on his deaf/mute housekeeper and we've got a particularly loathsome individual. There did seem to be one scene, after his own transformation and the subsequent killing of a local yokel hunter, where he felt remorse, but it came off as rather insincere. As far as the other characters go, there was nothing spectacular to report as all did about as well as they could with the material provided. One aspect that stood out to me as being odd was the ungainly dialog, particularly with Richard Crane's character. It was written in such a way as to make him sound intelligent, but it came off like someone using words they weren't familiar with...this was true of some of the other characters, but more so with Crane, perhaps given his deadpan delivery (be sure to stick around to the end as Crane delivers an oh so eloquent speech commenting on the hubris of man in general...oh bruther). As far as the special effects, there wasn't much to speak of, except for an unintentionally funny transformation sequence as Professor Groves changes from himself to a skinny Bruce Vilanch. The gorilla mask, fitted with an odd looking wig, was obviously purchased at a dime store, and as far as the saber-toothed tiger, it was just a regular tiger with quick cut shots of a fake tiger head sporting some tusks, creating a sense the creature was, in fact, a saber-toothed beast with retractable tusks. The direction by Dupont is adequate, but nowhere near the quality of some of his earlier works. The opening scenes appear not to be connected, and require a bit more intuitive work from the audience than should be necessary for a feature of this quality. Given this was one of his final films (he passed three years later), perhaps the creative fires just weren't there anymore. All in all this isn't a terrible film, but just an unoriginal amalgam of material done better in previous movies.
Cheezy Flicks provides a clean, fullscreen print on this DVD, along with a very decent and clear audio track. As far as extras, there are some extremely rough looking trailers for other Cheezy Flicks releases like Baron Blood (1972), Corridors of Blood (1962), and a particularly gory looking film called Eaten Alive! (1980). Also included are some intermission shorts one would have normally seen at the drive-in, an experience many in the younger generations shall, sadly, never get to enjoy.

It's hilarious early TV "sci-fi" suitable for all ages, so you can treat yourself and your kids to a bit of TV history and have a good laugh together. I saw three episodes of this show a few years ago (2 of them, including this one, on Mystery Science Theater 3000) and they were all loads of fun. This disc is a relative bargain at the price of less than $10.
In this epsiode, the Orbit Jet (Rocky and crew's spaceship) must defeat "space pirates." The writers couldn't just refer to them as pirates; in fact nearly everything in this show with a name is prefaced by the word "space" just to make it clear where it's being used.

The stories that were told by most TV shows in the 50's were often simple, and this show was no different in that regard. These plots were good enough to cause me to run home as a grade school kid in hopes of catching the latest episode of Rocky Jones.

Speaking technically, the special effects were done by someone with a real sense for it. There were no genuine sci-fi visual effects experts in the 1950's, just people with a good intuative feel for the subject and others who didn't have a clue. These special effects were obviously done by one person or very well coordinated.

I will not defend the often terrible plots in Rocky Jones but will speak up for the special effects which were better than other TV space operas of the day and often as good or better than film quality. They included effective model work, credible ground support equipment, very interesting humanoid robots, realistic space stations, well filmed launch sequences, great sound effects and wonderful futuristic music. Gangbusters!Released to theaters in 1957, GUNS DON'T ARGUE is a composite of three 1952 "Gangbusters" syndicated TV episodes, loosely woven together with additional narration. Focus is on Prohibition Era criminals. As this show was pro-law enforcement, facts that reflect badly on the FBI have been changed. Here for example, instead of their brutal ambush-style executions, both John Dillinger and Clyde Barrow fire the first shots after being given a chance to surrender.

Others covered (Baby Face Nelson, the Barker Gang, Pretty Boy Floyd) fare better; that is if you can ignore all the 1950s sets, props and costumes used to recreate the Roaring Twenties.

This classic TV early 1950's space opera is filled with cheap sets, poor special effects, annoying sidekicks, and a hero who in one episode actually tells his female crewmate to "go knit a sweater" (and she actually does) when they have a disagreement! It's hilarious early TV "sci-fi" suitable for all ages, so you can treat yourself and your kids to a bit of TV history and have a good laugh together. I saw three episodes of this show a few years ago (2 of them on Mystery Science Theater 3000) and they were all loads of fun. This disc is a bargain for the low price.

If you've never seen the show, it's really something. Rocky Jones is a square-jawed fisticuffs wielding spaceship pilot with REALLY goofy sidekicks, including Winky, a young man who acts like a kid, and Bobby, a little kid that acts all grown-up. Then there's VERY short-skirted Vena, his bright female crewmate that gets treated like, well, like women were mostly treated in the US in 1950's TV. Then there's elderly and brilliant Professor Newton, who in spite of being a genius, makes just enough miscalculations to get them into real trouble.

Rocky Jones is a vision of the far future firmly rooted in the early 1950's. They don't make them like this anymore! If you liked Lost In Space, this is sort of an earlier version of that, possibly even goofier, so you might well like this too.B0006IUE8ORocky Jones, Space Ranger: Manhunt in SpaceB00022LJ4MRocky Jones, Space Ranger: Beyond the MoonB00009NH88Rocky Jones, Space Ranger: Menace From Outer SpaceB00006SFJ9Rocky Jones, Space Ranger: Crash of the MoonsB00022LJ42Rocky Jones, Space Ranger: The Gypsy Moon923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video735700Heroic Missions292669By Theme510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video292650Classics510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video735732Space Adventure510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722791011General AAS292665Television510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722820011General AAS898094Classic TV163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081810114-for-3 Science Fiction & Fantasy1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video410450Anders, Rudolph409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412390Beckett, Scotty411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video414568Brooks, Rand411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419036Crane, Richard416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432778Lauter, Harry432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437004Meredith, Charles434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579548( S )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video501226Science Fiction & Fantasy - Television - General404923011General404922011Archives251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - 1959562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoB00096S4CGhttp://www.amazon.com/Wing-Prayer-Don-Ameche/dp/B00096S4CG%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00096S4CG52046http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BVW0ukFkL._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BVW0ukFkL._SL160_.jpg160118http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BVW0ukFkL.jpg500369http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BVW0ukFkL._SL30_.jpg3022http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BVW0ukFkL._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BVW0ukFkL._SL160_.jpg160118http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BVW0ukFkL.jpg500369Don AmecheDana AndrewsWilliam EytheCharles BickfordCedric Hardwicke1.33:1G (General Audience)DVDGlen MacWilliamsJ. FoortSeattle, WA52007-10-08Worst of All TimeIf anyone pays attention to the "plot" (or LACK thereof) the plot of the film is so implausible as to be laughable! No ships' Captain would EVER offer his ship and his men to be a sitting duck without first making certain his pilots were trained and under orders to shoot first and ask questions later, rather than BEG to be killed. Also, this film apparently did not have any military consultants. The pilots were swapping aircraft types in mid-air and the ship kept changing from one to another. This film was HILARIOUS!B00096S4CG50A3THBZ9VAMHWGAA3THBZ9VAMHWGAChristopher E. SarnoBoston, Massachusetts United States02007-04-07THE FLEET THAT CAME TO STAY!!I was twelve [12] years old when I saw this movie on a Saturday afternoon at a neighborhood theater...It had a powerful impact on my immature grasp of things then...it is a beautiful made movie during the anxious WW2 years about the US Navy and its pilots...just listen to the inspiring/heroic musical score by Hugo W. Friedhofer [kudos to him] and the easy; yet, Naval discipline as it flows so naturally under the direction of Henry Hathaway...forget the nit-pickers that drag on in here...the United States was losing the War in early 1942, I say again, losing the war all the way down to the tip of Australia...movies like the "Wing" made morale on the home/front soar as high as our Navy flyers could take it...by 1944 when this wonderful film was released, the USA was on the threshold of victory all the way to Tokyo...it was a long dirty way to Tokyo as The Captain alluded to...everytime I see this movie, I see my dearest friend recreated in the role played by Dana Andrews aloft in his Grumman Avenger [TBF]...he was decorated with the Navy Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross for heroic actions against the Japanese Imperial Fleet..movies of this genre will stand the test of time immemorial...the studio bosses knew how to make real movies in this era...I had my WAR in Korea and I [we] know what it takes to defeat America's enemies and this movie, "Wing and a Prayer" demostrates that ever so clearly as the carrier heads for the battle of Midway in 1942....I ask you, "Where were you in 1942"??..Semper Fidelis...SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF. B00096S4CG50A2MFNDNS1L7D16A2MFNDNS1L7D16JOHN GODFREYMilwaukee ,WI USA12006-11-17 I wanted to see a good WWII Navy movie. This is it. I also know history. This isn't. Yes, there was a Battle of Midway. After that... No matter. lots of action scenes, many of the scenes were actors performing in front of newsreel footage in what we now call a blue screen. Years later we're all so smart it almost seems quaint & we may chuckle. But it is excellent for it's time, which was wartime.
The U.S. military, paranoid as they are, covered up the battle & this movie for a long time. They publicized the Dolittle Tokyo raid which happened a few weeks before to boost the public morale. I would have thought our smashing victory at Midway might have had the same positive effect & a negative one on the Japanese.
The plot: The aircraft carrier USS X was traveling at light speed all over the Pacific so the enemy would think we had lots of carriers. It was traveling without it's escort ships which a carrier never does. It's too valuable. Then our pilots were to fly off the carrier but never engage enemy pilots. They are to run away, so the enemy thinks we are cowards. Of course, the enemy pilots would never think of following them back to their carrier which they could promptly sink since it has none of its escort ships. As history it is totally bogus but as a movie it is great. So I'm sorry if I'm critical. Dana Andrews, William Elthey & Henry Morgan etc. did good imitations of Navy pilots. They flew torpedo planes. In the movie they did a lot of damage & some of them survived. As we now know all the torpedo pilots went down & none of their torpedos hit a Japanese ship (some torpedoes were defective). This does not diminish their heroism or sacrifice. Don Ameche was exceptionally good as the stern, by the book, Cmdr. Bingo Harper. He is cast as the villian all the men love to hate. But he had the toughest job on the ship. I've seen worse than him in peacetime. One of the better war movies.
DescriptionDon Ameche, Dana Andrews, William Eythe and Richard Jaeckel star in this acclaimed film about newly-trained pilots assigned to an aircraft carrier immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Anticipating the battle of Midway, which will determine the future of the war in the Pacific, U.S. naval leaders attempt to lull the Japanese into a false sense of security by making it look like the American military is afraid to engage the enemy. Eager to fight, the young airmen aboard the carrier are not only confused and angered by their orders, but must also cope with a by-the-book officer (Ameche) who puts discipline and regulations above all else.B00005B1YFThe Fighting LadyB0000EYUE8Flat TopB00005PJ8KGuadalcanal DiaryB0001NBMGCCrash DiveB000MGBLJ6Purple Heart163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video290935Adventure163414Kids & Family404276Genres130DVD139452Video290988Action & Combat586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video909828War at Sea909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video909830War in the Sky909814By Theme586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video722772011General AAS586156Military & War404276Genres130DVD139452Video410310Alper, Murray409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video410372Ameche, Don409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video410618Andrews, Dana409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video413014Bickford, Charles411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419036Crane, Richard416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422468Eythe, William421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426424Hadley, Reed426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426872Hardwicke, Cedric426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429498Jaeckel, Richard429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432500Langan, Glenn432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video438108Morgan, Harry434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450120Trowbridge, Charles448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video457668Hathaway, Henry403504( H )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908716All Fox Titles90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908720General908718Action90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579556( W )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405385011G405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 - 1949562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoB00002SWEOhttp://www.amazon.com/Marilyn-Monroe-Collection-Hometown-Story/dp/B00002SWEO%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00002SWEO88348http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415GBM98CDL._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415GBM98CDL._SL160_.jpg160114http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415GBM98CDL.jpg475339http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415GBM98CDL._SL30_.jpg3021http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415GBM98CDL._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415GBM98CDL._SL160_.jpg160114http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415GBM98CDL.jpg475339Jeffrey LynnDonald CrispMarjorie ReynoldsAlan Hale Jr.Marilyn Monroe1.33:1NR (Not Rated)DVDArthur Pierson110018111999137Black & WhiteColorDVDNTSCEnglishOriginal LanguageDolby Digital 2.0 MonoSpanishSubtitledJapaneseSubtitledChineseSubtitled799USD$7.99DeltaDMID82026D11951-05-016075015510Academy RatioDVDABIS_DVDDelta01999-07-24Delta1951-05-01Marilyn Monroe Collection Hometown Story018111999137200USD$2.00150USD$1.507900003.572B00002SWEO30A1SVHXYNVNXPMDA1SVHXYNVNXPMDFrederick L. Jeffrey Lynn plays Blake Washburn, a newly un-elected state senator who returns home with quite an electoral chip on his shoulder. He's not above punching a guy for joking about the election, and even his old friends are likely to be met with a cold shoulder. Washburn takes over his uncle's newspaper, but all he cares about is starting an editorial crusade that will help him win his Senate seat back. Slim Haskins (a young Alan Hale, Jr. of Gilligan's Island fame), his best friend and lead reporter, grows increasingly frustrated at Washburn's politicized agenda, and even Washburn's long-suffering fiancé Janice (Marjorie Reynolds) cannot get through to him, even when she threatens to call the whole thing off. Undaunted, Washburn rakes big business up and down the coals of his editorial pages, even after one local businessman, John McFarland (Donald Crisp), gives him an Economics 101 lecture on the importance of big business and its products in everyday life.
Then Washburn's little sister Katie (Melinda Plowman) enters an old mine to retrieve her new puppy and becomes the victim of a terrible cave-in. The wealthy Mr. McFarland comes to Katie's aid in a very big way, as does big business itself through a number of its mechanical and life-saving products. Hometown Story carries an important message, and it delivers this message in a quite moving and certainly entertaining manner. As for Marilyn Monroe, she plays Washburn's secretary Iris; it is by no means a large part, but she does appear in several scenes. Her acting skills are not very polished at this stage of her career, but she certainly accomplishes her main task of making tight sweaters look absolutely amazing. Alan Hale's character has the hots for Iris, and I cannot help but get a kick out of watching "the Skipper" trying to put the moves on Marilyn Monroe.B00002SWEO46AVU26AGTDYSECAVU26AGTDYSECFilm FanaticCincinnati, Ohio72002-06-08Enjoyable Marilyn Monroe Double FeatureThis two-tape set is a must for Marilyn Monroe completists everywhere. 1) The 1951 film "Hometown Story" stars Jeffrey Lynn as a bitter ex-politician who goes to work for his uncle's newspaper. Monroe has a small but very amusing and memorable role in the picture. 2) "The Marilyn Monroe Story" is one of the best documentaries about the legendary sex goddess ever put together. John Huston, who directed Marilyn in her first really well-known film(THE ASPHALT JUNGLE) as well as her last film(THE MISFITS), takes us on an incredible journey through this remarkable woman's life.B00002SWEO3112001-03-05Not extraordinary but entertaining. The 1951 film, Home Town Story, was never released commercially. This film was produced by General Motors with the intent to propagandize American industry. Home Town Story is about a secretary (Marilyn Monroe) to a politician who is convicted that Big Business is behind his election loss. Marilyn does not have a significant amount of screen time. Out of 61 minutes, Marilyn is only present in approximately 1 minute and 40 seconds. However, this film is not utterly nor completely horrible. Perhaps Home Town Story is not a great first impression of a Marilyn Monroe film, but for an avid fan it is not her worst work.B00002SWEO3222001-03-04Not extraordinary but entertaining. The 1951 film, Home Town Story, was never released commercially.
SYNOPSES for "Sci-fi Classics Triple Feature, Vol. 1":

CRASH OF THE MOONS-- Three episodes of the 1954 kiddie TV series "Rocky Jones - Space Ranger" retooled into a TV movie. Our hero, space captain Rocky Jones, must deal with the deteriorating orbits of a pair of moons that will put them on a collision course, killing all their inhabitants. Watch for John Banner (Sgt. Schultz in the CBS-TV sit-com "Hogan's Heroes") as Bavarro.

ROCKETSHIP-- The very first (and best) Flash Gordon serial, condensed and edited into a feature film. After defeating a sea monster, Flash takes on Ming the Merciless, the declared ruler of Planet Mongo. Lots of action, spaceship battles, flimsy costumes, bizarre sets and wacky gadgetry.

THINGS TO COME-- Eeerily prescient H.G. Wells story has a second world war breaking out in 1940. After decades of fighting and destruction, plague kills off most of Earth's population in 1966. The few survivors slowly rebuild and by the year 2035, a planned first voyage to the moon is threatened by a popular uprising against progress. Gap-toothed Terry-Thomas (the villainous Sir Percy Ware-Armitage in "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines") appears as an uncredited extra.

The companion to this DVD, SCI-FI CLASSICS TRIPLE FEATURE, Vol. 2, contains "Devil Girl from Mars," "Monster from Green Hell," and "Rocketship X-M."
