JohnsonMarseilles, Illinois, USA02009-06-17Excellent!When a meteor comes down in an out-of-the-way western town, it seems that they finally have something to put the town on the map. However, when it turns out that the "meteor" is actually a reentry vehicle for a Martian invasion force, its bad news for everyone. Dr. Clayton Forrester (played by Gene Barry) finds himself caught up in the Martian invasion, trying to stay out in front of the invaders, and hopefully find a way to stop them. But, there's surprises out there, some more frightening than he could have feared, and others more wonderful than he could have hoped for.

This excellent movie was released in 1953, which might make you expect that it is not worth seeing. But, be ready for a surprise. In fact, this movie is quite excellent! The special effects have stood up quite well, with the Martian war machines still looking threatening and futuristic 55 years later. Also, the story is quite interesting, and the action gripping.

I have enjoyed this movie repeatedly over my entire life, and I enjoyed introducing my 15-year-old son to the movie (he liked it too). So, if you want a good science-fiction movie, one that will keep you glued to the screen, then get this movie. I give it my highest recommendations!B000AOEMWS40A39CX0EE4BZCZCA39CX0EE4BZCZCCraig ConnellLockport, NY USA02009-06-01Amazing For Its DayI really enjoyed this the first two times I saw it but on the third, several years ago, t seemed to have lost its impact. Maybe that's because I had just watched the re-make and it was pretty hard to top the special-effects in that film.

Still.....for its day - over 55 years ago -this "original" movie had amazing special-effects. The alien ships still look cool and probably always will.

Gene Barry is fine in the lead role and I appreciated the very ending in which God, not man, is given glory for the cessation of violence. This is a movie where people actually pray for help. I didn't see that in the re-make, of course.
B000AOEMWS50AOHB3T4SFSC2HAOHB3T4SFSC2HDebbie PearsonBlackLeiDeeHawaii,USA02009-05-11Almost Perfect The movie itself was excellent! Wells' chilling novel of a Martian invasion of Earth becomes even more frightening in this 1952 film adaptation that's widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. An Oscar. winner for Best Special Effects, The War of the Worlds delivers eye-popping thrills, laser-hot action and unrelenting, edge-of-your-seat suspense. No one who has seen the film's depiction of the swan-shaped Martian machines-ticking and hissing menacingly as they cut their path of destruction-will ever forget their ominous impact.Amazon.com essential videoAfter the success of 1950's Destination Moon and 1951's When Worlds Collide, visionary producer George Pal brought the classic H.G. Wells story of a Martian invasion to the big screen, and it instantly became a science fiction classic and winner of the 1953 Academy Award for Best Special Effects. It's a work of frightening imagination, with its manta-ray spaceships armed with cobra-like probes that shoot a white-hot disintegration ray. As formations of alien ships continue to wreak destruction around the globe, the military is helpless to stop this enemy while scientists race to find an effective weapon. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson play the hero and heroine roles that were de rigueur for movies like this in the '50s, and their encounter with one of the Martians is as creepy today as it was in '53. It finally takes an unseen threat--simple Earth bacteria--to conquer the alien invaders, but not before War of the Worlds has provided a dazzling display of impressive special effects. As memorable for its sound effects as for its spectacular visions of destruction, this is a movie for the ages--the kind of spectacular that inspired little kids such as Steven Spielberg (not to mention Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, whose Independence Day cribs liberally from the plot) and still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon B00005JKFRThe Day the Earth Stood StillB000HEWEDKForbidden Planet (Two-Disc Special Edition)B00009NHC0The Thing from Another World0790747324The Time MachineB00005NG6AWhen Worlds Collide163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163350General163345Classics404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video735730Alien Invasion510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video735736Aliens510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video292650Classics510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163432Sci-Fi Action510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video412016Barry, Gene411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video414124Brandon, Henry411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418730Cornthwaite, Robert416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video420378DeMille, Cecil B419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video423942Frees, Paul422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424928Giglio, Sandro424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426872Hardwicke, Cedric426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video432026Kruschen, Jack430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431950Kreig, Frank430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433092Lee, Rudy432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443906Robinson, Ann442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video444018Rockwell, Robert442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450030Tremayne, Les448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video457660Haskin, Byron403504( H )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video919296Special Editions295214Fully Loaded DVDs251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357265011Action & Adventure357264011By Genre357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357271011Horror357264011By Genre357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357299011Silent357275011By Theme357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video357228011General357227011Indie & Art House251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234071Action & Adventure3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234081All Paramount3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video3234111Classics3234061Paramount Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579556( W )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video680913011The Classic Movies Sale: DVDs as Low as $5.9944261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390120011Full Screen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405385011G405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620870111950 - What is of surprise is the type of war picture it was. Rather than unfold another of the wildly popular shoot-em-ups then current, director Henry Hathaway chose a more daring tack: to film a character study of an officer who was widely considered to be one of the best tank generals of all time, even if he fought for Germany. James Mason is Rommel, a man whose strong sense of duty shines clearly in every scene. Mason speaks in his normal resonant English accent, with no one speaking German. Mason's Rommel is a general staff officer who begins the war with a few reservations about the competency of Hitler. He keeps these to himself until a rapidly deteriorating and collapsing front forces him to make a choice that afflicted many others in the Wehrmacht. Should he obey the orders of his Fuhrer without question and risk the annihilation of Germany or should he act to remove Hitler in a coup. The recent film VALKYRIE has Tom Cruise as Colonel Klaus Von Stauffenberg face the same brutal choice, with both officers in each film reaching the same conclusion: namely that Hitler had to go.

Part of the problem I had with THE DESERT FOX lies in director Hathaway's desire to have it both ways--a film that is an actioner and one that explores the inner thoughts of one man at a critical juncture in a world war. The movie begins with a British raid on a chalet in Nazi-occupied Europe for the sole purpose of assassinating Rommel. There is considerable gunfire and explosions, but after that the audience views the late career of Rommel through the lens of stock footage of war scenes and vignettes that lead Rommel inexorably to conclude that the only way to salvage Germany was to arrest Hitler and the entire leadership of the Nazi party. Rommel is briefly shown as the commander of the Afrika Corps in 1942, but his appearance is limited mostly to scenes in which he grouses about the idiocy of obeying Hitler's orders to fight to the last man and the last bullet. Fast forward two years to D-Day. Mason shares some revelatory scenes with Leo G. Carroll as Field Marshal von Rundshtet as both similarly realize that the fate of their country lies in the incompetent hands of a corporal with no concept of tactics and leadership. The ending is no surprise to any student of military history. What Mason adds to factual history is his portrayal of a man who must battle his conscience with the same ferocity that he does with the Americans and English. The scenes with Jessica Tandy as his wife are deeply touching as both face a crunching reality of Hitler's vengeance that reaches out to ensnare even a decorated Field Marshal. THE DESERT FOX is a war film that focuses less on the fox and more on the common sense decency of a general who swore allegiance to one who had none at all. B00008AOTO40A2V27U0AJFWDL0A2V27U0AJFWDL0George J. Haywardgjhcincinnati, ohio02008-11-25Excellent qualityHaving just returned from El Alamein in northern Egypt where much of this action took place I wanted to recall this very important event and further my interest in Rommel.

A true story, but not one we American's are as familiar as the Brits, since we didn't really have a roll in actualy fighting. Good British, German and Italian history mixed in with action everyone can enjoy.

Having rented "The Desert Fox" years ago, I was not at all disappointed in my re-done purchase.

GH Cincinnati, OHB00008AOTO50ADROJN7DRPW6VADROJN7DRPW6VMarcus TulliusSeattle, WA USA02008-11-16Rommel's homeI am writing from memory here -- of the film from three months ago, and a walk from Herrlingen to the Rommel home twenty years ago.

Although the IMDB listing says the filming took place in California, the exteriors of the home match my memory of the actual house. The driveway entry's gateposts, the curve of the driveway, the the shape and stone appearance of the front of the house, even the front doorstep.

I'll have to watch again to see if Mason was actually present in those exterior shots, or did he stay in California?

The house was briefly used as a U.S. military HQ, and then became an orphanage, I remember reading, after the war.

When I walked up the hill from Herrlingen toward the Rommel driveeway on my left, the gate was shut, but then a car approached it, and a young woman opened it, just as she saw me.

She did not want to disappoint a visitor from so far away, and so delayed her errands to show me in to the house.

I stood inside in the portico, looking up the stairway to the right, and she explained that three young families, each with two children, had cooperatively purchased the home. I believe she said each family occupied one floor of the house, though I don't recall it being tall enough for three stories.

I did not intrude further, and went back outside, where she pointed out the bomb shelter (against possible Allied air attack) to the right of the driveway (the uphill side when facing the house), up against some (birch?) trees.

When she closed the gate behind us and drove away, I turned left and walked up the hill, the route Rommel took in his last moments.

The right side of the road had several newer homes, on an uphill slope, looking out over the valley and river below. This same hillside appears bare, I recall, in the film.

On the left side of the road, the side opposite the houses, there is now a bench (concrete?) with a plaque, I believe, commemorating Rommel's death there. I sat there for a few moments. I believe photos of that site are availabe to view online.

I need to see the film again to be certain, but I now recall seeing that same spot in it, without the bench, or with a cruder wooden one (?) Ah, memory!

Anyway, among the praises in your wonderful reviews here, I want to include praise for this film's conscientious effort to utilize or duplicate the actual Rommel home in Desert Fox.

The Rommel story is of course the mirror we hold up to ourselves in times of turmoil.

How would I have acted, given a career involvement in military expertise, as I realized the madness of the rulers and the insanity my country had fallen into? Would I have withdrawn my skills from such wrong uses?

All of the recent fatuous praise of U.S. soldiers who don't think for themselves, and just "do their jobs," hmmmm....

And "loyal" U.S. civilians, who've allowed the displacement of four million Iraqi refugees, among them 10,000s of young teen girls selling themselves in neighboring countries for the survival of their families, without an "American" finger lifted to help them.

Where is the shame now among us that the German people were expected to learn and display when confronted with the ovens up the road?

In this Republic, especially, the "job" of Citizen comes first, and we have been slow, slow, slow to do it.

The Rommels present the many-layered story of sane people trying to exist in insane times, much like the parallel sad story of Robert E. Lee.

We have even more apt lifetime examples generalship, such as Eisenhower, eager to teach the rest of us to keep War as the last resort, not the first.

We gather here to learn from history, and its significant characters, so as not to repeat or perpetuate their misery.

The final coda of Manfred's long and successful career as Stuttgart's mayor indicates that these were, indeed, normal, honorable people that any of us could aspire to equal, and yet, sadly, living in a time of such evil, they could neither prevent much of the evil, nor keep it from marking their own family with its touch.

The death mask of Rommel, the photo of which I recall seeing in The Rommel Papers, casts upon us a final look of contempt which speaks many volumes.

Without going into the complex layers of bitter disappointment that might have produced such a look, I might add that I hope this soul has since found peace in understanding how an immature humanity could fail to live up to the high principles he held, and arrived at forgiveness for himself in not penetrating the fog of life's accumulated experience enough to see what he was really up against, and to escape it with his family in time.B00008AOTO41A276M3NSIY9B82A276M3NSIY9B82Harry BrewerS'port, La.12008-10-13The Desert FoxThe Desert Fox is a tight little film about Rommel that's directed by Henry Hathaway. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate but what film can be in only 88 minutes? Hathaway certainly glorifies Rommel as an honorable man that was only being a good soldier. Once again, not being a historian, I'm not sure of its accuracy but I don't think I've ever heard the person of Rommel being disparaged. There have been many facts about different German officers of that period that are common knowledge, many of them are never shown in a good light. The exception seems to be Rommel.

The movie is based upon the biography written by Brigadier Desmond Young who had been captured in Africa. He only saw Rommel from a distance one time in the desert & from this, after the war, he researched the background of the Desert Fox. The movie doesn't focus on Rommel's (James Mason) role in the Africa Corps. It focuses more so on the later period when he was a part of the Normandy defenses & his involvement in the assassination attempt on the leader of his nation. None of this is presented in much depth & in the end Ididn't feel any sorrow in the demise of Rommel.

Frau Rommel (Jessica Tandy) is presented as the dutiful wife though there is a hint that she was the catalyst in getting Rommel involved in the plot. Dr. Karl Strolin (Cedric Hardwicke) approaches Rommel about the plot. At this point we are told that Rommel has harbored secret feelings about the situation that he had revealed to his wife. Rommel sees it as an act of treason even though it's the right thing to do. This inner conflict causes Rommel to be hesitant about the consequences.

There's not a lot of action in the movie, it's more of a character study about a man who must make an extraordinary decision. The movie has authentic film footage interspersed throughout. The film even has the part where the satchel bomb was placed in the bunker by Col. Von Stauffenberg (Eduard Franz) to kill the infamous leader (Luther Adler). There are a couple of scenes with Field Marshall Von Runstedt (Leo G. Carroll), one of which reveals where Von Runstedt's sympathies might lay.

The official version of Rommel's death was that he died from his war wounds. The film makes it plain that Rommel was about to be put on trial for treason & it was obvious he was guilty. The messenger (Everett Sloane) makes it plain that Rommel only has one choice. Rommel wants to go to trial but his wife & son would suffer the consequences of this. Rommel is a hero & they would prefer he would go away quietly without making the noises that the German people would hear & respect. Rommel agrees to take the offer in order to protect his family.

The Desert Fox is a good film that gives James Mason a chance to show some of his acting skills. The real life Desmond Young portrays himself in the movie & is the narrator. The film is in very good condition & there aren't any significant bonus features though it does have a Spanish audio track & subtitles in English & Spanish.B00008AOTO11A2K3SULCNHLSQ5A2K3SULCNHLSQ5Terrence M. "The Longest Day" was also phenominal. Some others were "OK" This movie was the bottom of the barrel. Take note! "ALL" of the war movies have good ratings. Buyer beware!DescriptionJames Mason delivers a strong performance in this fascinating portrait of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. In the early 1940's, Rommel's juggernaut Afrika Korps dominated North Africa. But as the tide turned and he came to the painful realization that his Fuhrer, to whom he hd sworn allegiance, was destroying Germany, his ingrained sense of duty pushed him into a conspiracy against Hitler. Co-starring Jessica Tandy as Rommel's wife and Cedric Hardwicke as another anti-Hitler conspirator, The Desert Fox is an intimate look at one of the most respected military tacticians of modern times.Amazon.comWhat a difference a few years can make. The Desert Fox, released six years after the end of World War II, is a solemnly respectful tribute to Erwin Rommel, Germany's most celebrated military genius. James Mason's portrayal of this gallant warrior became a highlight of his career iconography. The film itself is oddly disjointed: a precredit commando raid to liquidate Rommel is followed by a flashback to the field-marshal's lightning successes commanding the Afrika Korps—-a compressed account via documentary footage and copious narration (spoken by Michael Rennie, who also dubs Desmond Young, the Rommel biographer and onetime British POW appearing briefly as himself). The dramatic core is Rommel's growing disenchantment with Hitler (Luther Adler), his involvement in the plot to assassinate der Führer, and his subsequent martyrdom. Mason's Rommel returned two years later for a flamboyant, mostly German-speaking cameo in The Desert Rats, a prequel focusing on the battle for Tobruk. --Richard T. Peck's discussions with his Doctor atheist friend are also very well written and acted. The scene at the end is very moving and hasn't failed to make me tear up a bit. I like to watch this film at Christmas but it is not a Christmas film.
This is a fantastic print from Fox, also. B000FFJ83K41A5DQGGNM5BG4EA5DQGGNM5BG4EZiskel & Egbert12009-01-10"Keys" not Peck's best, but the story carries him anyway. It is obvious that this is Gregory Peck's first film, in that he does not yet have that air that the great actors have. To see him at his best, check out his scene with the Town Judge as he accepts the job as defense attorney, Atticus Finch, in "To Kill a Mockingbird."

A lot of the Roman Catholic religion is toned down in this piece for the sake of palatability. Having done so, the movie makers have made a touching human drama out of missionary work in the Far East. It deals with some of the cultural differences from an ignorant 1950's Western point of view, but somehow this does not end up spoiling the film.

In the end, the shortcomings of the church are not glossed over, while the good actions of good men within the obviously flawed institution are highlighted to good effect. It is a story of Godly love overcoming all weaknesses in the heart of a "failure" of the priesthood. While others within the church go on to personal fame and glory--like his close boyhood friend, played by Vincent Price--our hero soldiers on in anonymity where the "missionary rubber meets the road", so to speak.

Overall, this movie does not deny the shortcomings of many in the church, while simultaneously revealing the work of those who do Christ proud. This is a must-see for missionaries of all denominations. Four Stars.

For all those who love tear-jerker movies, my wife rates this as a "one-cry" movie. Facing scorn, revolution, and poverty, Fr. Francis Chisholm leads his new flock by gentle wisdom and perseverence. Overlong even with some heartwarming and important episodic developments, the film remains a substantative viewing experience. (Includes Vincent Price and a young Roddy McDowell as the boy Francis Chisholm. Also a winner of several Oscars and nominations.) DescriptionA marvelous spectacle spanning six decades and two continents, The Keys of the Kingdom is the glorious epic that introduced audiences to screen newcomer Gregory Peck.
After losing his parents and his childhood sweetheart to tragedy, Francis Chisholm (Peck) joins the priesthood and devotes himself to a life of service and compassion. But Chisholm?s unorthodox beliefs raise eyebrows among his superiors, especially Bishop Angus Mealy (Vincent Price). And when he is sent to the farthest reaches of China to rebuild an abandoned mission, Chisholm faces his greatest challenge of all: to tame a hostile land, win over a superstitious people and save his parish from an invading army. Nominated* for four Academy Awards®, including Best Actor (Peck), The Keys of the Kingdom is a ?towering film stamped with greatness? B0002HOEOY22A1J03J0HZ7KU5TA1J03J0HZ7KU5TScott RiversLos Angeles, CA USA42008-10-13Studio Tampering Ruins Hitchcock ThrillerCut from the same stylistic cloth as "Rebecca," director Alfred Hitchcock's first teaming with Cary Grant was this disappointing 1941 adaptation of Francis Iles' novel "Before the Fact." Hitchcock successfully cast Grant against type as Johnnie - a reckless, irresponsible playboy who marries the shy Lina (played by an ineffectual Joan Fontaine). Because of mounting circumstantial evidence, Lina suspects that her husband is a murderer. Lina's psychological tug of war builds to a ludicrous climax that negates the entire film. If Hitchcock had his way, "Suspicion" would have evolved into a disturbing thriller rather than a missed opportunity. Unfortunately, RKO altered the framework of "Suspicion" with the same callous insensitivity that marred Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." Another drawback is the lack of chemistry between Grant and Fontaine. In future films, Hitchcock made certain Grant was paired with romantically compatible co-stars such as Ingrid Bergman and Grace Kelly. "Suspicion" should be viewed as a blueprint for a more rewarding Hitchcock-Grant collaboration, "Notorious" (1946).B0002HOEOY44A16IM9MYTHCKYQA16IM9MYTHCKYQPenumbraAtlanta, GA USA42008-07-06Very good early Hitchcock; misses the top tier due to questionable casting. Nice DVD packageJoan Fontaine won the Academy Award for her performance in 1941's "Suspicion." The previous year she had portrayed a very similar character in Hitchcock's "Rebecca - Criterion Collection." Lina McLaidlaw is a slightly more confident and sophisticated version of The Second Mrs. de Winter. Both characters are naïve young Englishwomen, swept off their feet by handsome worldly men. They discover too late that the men they married may be capable of anything - even murder.

After the briefest possible acquaintance, Lina defies her family's wishes and elopes with Johnnie Aysgarth. Her father has warned her that Johnnie is wild. Society whispers about his crimes, possibly cheating at cards or being named correspondent in a divorce. He is a man who has disgraced his name and his family, and now lives on the fringes of polite society surviving only only on his looks and his charm. General McLaidlaw does not approve of Johnnie, but Lina doesn't care.

Almost immediately after they return from the honeymoon, Lina begins to learn that her new husband is not the man she imagined. The first revelation is that he is completely broke, living on borrowed funds, and expects to be supported by Lina's allowance from her family - and one day to live in style on her inheritance.

As the film progresses, the suspense is masterfully built up as Lina learns that Johnnie is also a liar, a thief, a gambler, and an embezzler. His addiction to the horses has left him perpetually broke and desperate for funds. She begins to suspect that, in order to get money, Johnnie will stop at nothing, not even the murder of his best friend... or the murder of his wife.

If there is a flaw in this film, it's casting Cary Grant as the notorious Johnnie Aysgarth. Hitchcock once said that one didn't direct Cary Grant, one simply put him in front of a camera. He certainly has the looks and charm; but is he believable as a villain? For the movie to really work, you have to believe that Cary Grant is capable of a host of heinous sins. Hitchcock really strains suspension of disbelief here.

As Johnnie's best friend, Beaky, Nigel Bruce give us his trademark good natured, bumbling Englishman character - very similar to his version of Dr. Watson in The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection.

Hitchcock is a master with black and white cinematography. In one of the film's most famous scenes, Johnnie slowly climbs a curving staircase, carrying a tray with a single glass of milk to his ailing wife. The house is dark, Johnnie is seen only as a shadowy silhouette, but the glass of milk actually glows on the screen. Hitchcock wanted us to focus on that glass. Could it contain...poison?

The film also boasts a beautiful score by Franz Waxman built around Lina and Johnnie's love theme, the Strauss waltz, "Vienna Blood."

The DVD has an English only soundtrack with available subtitles in English, French or Spanish. It also includes an original theatrical trailer, and a documentary about the making of the film and the transition between the source material (Before the Fact (Pan Classic Crime)) and the changes made by Hitchcock and the studio.

This is one of Hitchcock's best early efforts, but it would have been an even better film had the studio not interfered with his original vision. Nevertheless, it's still a very good movie. Recommended.
Product DescriptionIn Suspicion wealthy sheltered Joan Fontaine is swept off her feet by charming ne'er-do-well Cary Grant. Though warned that Grant is little more than a fortune hunter Fontaine marries him anyway. She remains loyal to her irresponsible husband as he plows his way from one disreputable business scheme to another. Gradually Fontaine comes to the conclusion that Grant intends to do away with her in order to collect her inheritance...a suspicion confirmed when Grant's likeable business partner Nigel Bruce dies under mysterious circumstances. Suspicion's stylish chills put Hitchcock on the top of the Hollywood heap...and keep audiences on the edges of their seats to this day. So hang on for all-out suspense that's all-out Hitchcock! Year: 1941Running Time: 99 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA UPC: 053939658323Amazon.comRepeated viewings can't dispel the shock of the final scene in this classic 1941 romantic mystery--a brief but disorienting confrontation that suddenly inverts the heroine's mounting conviction that she's married a murderer, forcing us to reconsider virtually every scene and line of dialogue that's preceded it. It's a masterful coup de grace for director Alfred Hitchcock, who has built a puzzle around the corrosive power of suspicion, threaded with deft ambiguities that toy with dramatic conventions and character archetypes in nearly every frame.
As embodied by Joan Fontaine, who nabbed an Oscar in this second outing with the director, Lina McLaidlaw is a buttoned-up, bookish heiress whose prim exterior conceals longings for a more engaged emotional life. Her solution materializes in the darkly handsome Johnnie Aysgarth, a gambler, womanizer, and spendthrift who flirts, then pursues, and soon marries her. As Aysgarth, Cary Grant is both irresistible and sinister, capable of deceit and petty theft, as well as grander designs on his bride's impending fortune. Lina's passion for Johnnie is clouded by each new revelation about his apparent dishonesty, from clandestine gambling to real estate development schemes; more troubling are clues implicating him in the death of his best friend, and the prospect that Johnnie may be slowly poisoning Lina herself. By the time we see him ascending a darkened staircase with a suspicious glass of milk, an image made all the more indelible through the spectral glow the director captures in the glass, the evidence seems damning indeed.
In fact, even as Hitchcock stacks the deck against Johnnie, and takes full advantage of Grant's skill at conveying such menace, the director also dots his landscape with visual clues to Lina's own neurotic (and erotic) obsessions. The final scene forces us to reevaluate her behavior while leaving enough of a cloud over Johnnie to rob him, and us, of a complete exoneration. It's a wicked, unsettling payoff to a brilliantly executed thriller. --Sam Sutherland B001D8W7EKNotoriousB001D8W7EURebeccaB0002HOEQ2Dial M for MurderB001PKHS68To Catch a Thief - The Centennial Collection (1955) (2pc)0790731029Strangers on a Train163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video524228Classics163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video898096Classics512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video403506All Titles549368Alfred Hitchcock512050Mystery & Suspense Masters512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video163411Suspense512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video410648Angel, Heather409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video414784Bruce, Nigel411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video423432Fontaine, Joan422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video425674Grant, Cary424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426872Hardwicke, Cedric426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429724Jeans, Isabel429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433788Livesey, Roger432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579548( S )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1240754011Romance163375Romantic Comedies163394Romantic Drama251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 - 1949562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video1253966011Best Actress1253959011Academy Awards1253957011Award Winners386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR2E2M3NEHGAGC7Joan Fontaine: movie highlightsR2E29PUOTYDH3TTop Movies of 1941R1NM8CGSX60YAOMy Favorite MoviesRS0W4ZZ8R9A39Favorite Cary Grant filmsREB9XS31TDUEUHITCHCOCK'S BestR13KMK0ZVR3KHWFilm Noir on DVD, Part I 1940-47R2WB72O2UUK3ZXBest Actress Oscar Winners! The first is George Stevens' assured direction, his first post-WWII film and a palpable sign of his wartime experiences that portends his deepening sense of character in dramas like A Place in the Sun and Shane after his years of breezy comedies and musicals. The second is star Irene Dunne, who caps her impressively versatile screen career with a performance of unforced warmth and uncommon depth. With no make-up and sporting a convincing Norwegian accent, she provides the film's heart and emotional anchor as Mama.

The framing device for the story is the recently completed manuscript by Katrin Hanson which she reads out loud while reminiscing about her Norwegian family in San Francisco circa 1910. A family of six living on hilly Larkin Street, the Hansons maintain their core family unit despite a lot of hardships and eccentric relatives. While father Lars toils as a carpenter to support his family, Katrin's memories inevitably revolve around her stoic mother Martha, who consistently shows the courage of her convictions. When spinsterish Aunt Trina decides to marry a milquetoast pharmacist, it is Martha who must get consensus from her intolerant sisters Jenny and Sigrid as well as Uncle Chris, a black-sheep blowhard who acts as the family patriarch. When Katrin's baby sister Dagmar goes to the hospital overnight, it is Martha who disguises herself as a charwoman to be able to stay with her. And when Katrin becomes discouraged enough to give up her writing aspirations, it is again Martha who finagles her way to meeting a famous author and convincing her to read one of Katrin's short stories.

Beyond Dunne's exemplary work, there is a sturdy supporting cast to consider - Oscar Homolka bringing the requisite bluster to Uncle Chris, Ellen Corby in her only first-rate screen role as timid Aunt Trina, and at 25, Barbara Bel Geddes conveying convincing adolescent innocence as Katrin. DeWitt Bodeen's screenplay captures the episodic nature of the real Katrin Forbes' remembrance and one can assume of John Van Druten's Broadway play. It should be noted that without Stevens and Dunne, the film would surely feel far more interminable at its 134-minute running length. The 2004 DVD is sparse on extras offering only a three-minute introduction from George Stevens Jr. and the original theatrical trailer.B0004Z322O50A3JSX0ME6PR6NPA3JSX0ME6PR6NPHisCreation02009-03-13"We don't have to go to the bank"Wholesome does not have to be a sign of dowdy or boring. This is a classic that our family loves. The quirks of the aunts and uncles, the sibling rivalry, the real-life home scenes... we just laugh and cry with this movie.Product DescriptionMovie DVDAmazon.com essential videoThis high point in the 1940s vogue for movies about family life at the turn of the century was directed by George Stevens (Shane), and stars Irene Dunne as the matriarch of a Norwegian family that faces hard knocks with grace in 1910 (or so) San Francisco. Based on John Van Druten's hit play (derived from Kathryn Forbes's autobiographical memoir), the film is gorgeously rendered and quite moving as an act of memory. The sterling cast of character actors--Edgar Bergen, Rudy Vallee, Oscar Homolka, Barbara Bel Geddes, Ellen Corby, Cedric Hardwicke--add great texture and a depth of experience that make the film feel quite lived-in. Hardwicke's turn as a penniless boarder who "pays" his rent by reciting from classic literature is a special highlight. --Tom KeoghB000067IVZLife with FatherB00013RCAMCheaper By the Dozen0156563770Mama's Bank Account (Harvest/HBJ Book)B0002KPHZ6Since You Went AwayB00011D1OUMrs. Miniver163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video523936Classic Comedies163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740180Ensemble Films291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740146Mothers & Daughters740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722752011General AAS740138Family Life163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video412182Bates, Florence411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video412762Bergen, Edgar411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video418678Corby, Ellen416120( C )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video421088Dorn, Philip419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video421564Dunne, Irene419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422410Evanson, Edith421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video424646Geddes, Barbara Bel424172( G )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video426872Hardwicke, Cedric426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440018O'Neil, Barbara439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450588Vallee, Rudy450514( V )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video462482Stevens, George403580( S )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600330All Titles515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600314Comedy515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600318Drama515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579528( I )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620860111940 - Mayo02009-06-13More interesting than entertainingCalling the acting stiff would be an understatement, and no one in the movie ever says anything - everyone declaims, and in bold, often stentorian tones. Every point made in the movie is made with the subtlety of a jackhammer. To modern ears the result is vaguely ridiculous, and sometimes irritating.

Like everyone else in his era, Wells was a great deal too optimistic about the Wonders of Science (the capitals are essential). But the movie made a lot of good points and Wells clearly made a handful of good guesses. He foresaw European war (even if he clearly had no idea what the battle lines would be drawn over), and anticipated germ warfare, non-lethal crowd control, and the general "scaling up" of science. Even where he was wrong (his ideas on spaceflight were unworkable, his apparently fond hopes for an uprising of scientists and engineers unlikely) the guesses were interesting. (Whoever it was that dreamed up the movie's clothing fashions for the far future era, though, was out to lunch.)

I can't imagine the impact that would have had on a 30's audience. It was probably little short of mind blowing. Watching it with that in mind makes it worthwhile. And some of the sets were fascinating, providing eye candy for when when the actors aren't quite holding up their end. If you like sci-fi at all, worth a rental.
B000056NWH50A2XGUOMY4TCMKBA2XGUOMY4TCMKBGerald R. ArnoldDenver, Colorado12009-04-16History Repeating ItselfGreat story from the past that looks strangely familiar.

This movie is a reminder of the proverb, "There is nothing new under the sun"... "All that is has already been done".

Of course another view of this is that everything they are doing to us they have done before, and have refined the same techniques through careful deliberation and much practice. It is clear that the present new world order scheme is an old world ambition for world domination and total population control. There is a "thread" that runs throughout history, and is revealed in the study of Ponerology.
B000056NWH30A1AP7D9C9IR5INA1AP7D9C9IR5INB AnncatladySan Jose, CA United States32009-03-27a caucasian futureI just saw this film on TCM. For a film made in 1936--considering what happened later--it was eerily on target on some things. The dialogue was somewhat stiff and unrealistic and did anyone notice that only caucasians seemed to have survived into the future? What happened to all the Asians, Africans, and Hispanics/Latinos? B000056NWH42A28MKPGBA8N0BXA28MKPGBA8N0BXTim KuzniarTWK_ArtistHighlands Ranch, CO United States22009-02-18Good Movie -- Good Restoration...I first saw H.G. Wells "Things To Come" when I was about 12 and even then it made an indelible impression on me. The last time I saw it was in college (too many years ago to mention) for a film history class and it held up well. So this restored DVD version is only my third viewing of this flick.

But the film itself still holds up, addressing many social, political and scientific implications of a progressing society that many of us would do well to heed today. For purposes of complete disclosure I must admit up front that I am a serious technocrat and believe that our intelligent ability to use science and technology to uncover the secrets of nature is the main thing that will carry us through our current difficulties and out into the future. And is apparent that H.G. wells thought much the same. (After you see this movie you will understand that, if I had the option, I would join "Wings Over The World" instantly...).

No doubt that this movie is a bit dated -- cinematic sensibilities have changed a lot since the production of this film. Yet, there are many stylistic choices in the areas of lighting and photography that lift it out of the ordinary. And given the technical limitations of its day, the special effects in "Things To Come" (especially the scale model work) is extremely creative and inspiring.

The restoration of this classic is very well done, and probably the best that can be achieved, given the age of the materials thay probably had to work with. Though I prefer watching the original black and white, the colorized version on this disc is not too bad -- it affects an impressionistic quality, using color in a pastel fashion to overlay rather than replace information. It reminds one of the hand-tinted color photographs from gread-grandpa's day -- quaint and charming if not dynamic.

Alltogether, I would recommend this DVD to anyone who has an interest in the history of cinema, the history of science fiction films or the history of social evolution. The ending scene where Raymond Massey's character spells out why Man has to explore the Universe (taken right from Well's original text) still sends chills up my spine and stokes the fires of inspiration and imagination. Check it out -- I don't think you'll be disappointed. Color works in this film. compared to the black and white version in the same dvd, film buffs can compare directly their likes and dislikes of the colorization process. I think the color adds a positive new dimension in this film. It doesn't work for all older films but this time I think it is a winner.DescriptionOne of the most important science fiction films of all time, H.G. Wells's "Things to Come" opens prior to World War II and takes the viewer on a hundred-year time trip to 2036 A.D. when a man and a woman are rocketed to the moon. This inspired saga predicts television, jet planes and evil dictators. Featuring fabulous sets, a rich musical score and sweeping visual grandeur, "Things to Come" is a truly spectacular film event! Features a pristine new film-to-video transfer from original source materials.Amazon.com essential videoBased on H.G. Wells's speculative meditation on the price of progress, this 1936 English science-fiction epic shows the painterly touch of director William Cameron Menzies, an American whose career in art direction and production design, as well as uncredited directorial work, attached him to such visual triumphs as Gone with the Wind, Alexander Korda's sumptuous 1940 Thief of Baghdad, and Menzies's better-known SF achievement as director, the original Invaders from Mars. Things to Come traces a generational saga that begins, presciently, with a global war that outlives its own political purpose, unraveling society to a Balkanized world of isolated communities. In the wake of a subsequent, devastating plague, a new technocracy arises, evolving toward Menzies's striking vision of vast, subterranean cities, rendered in matte paintings building on then-contemporaneous art-deco "streamlined" aesthetics. Driven more by theme than plot, Things to Come lacks the sheer momentum of other Wells classics brought to film (The Invisible Man, War of the Worlds, and The Time Machine, among them); but Menzies's bold look and a strong cast including Raymond Massey, Ralph Richardson, Cedric Hardwicke and a young Ann Todd explain the film's enduring appeal. --Sam Sutherland B000FVQLKWThis Island EarthB000HEWEDKForbidden Planet (Two-Disc Special Edition)B00005NG6AWhen Worlds CollideB001BSBBIAShe - In COLOR! The charater of the poet (Gringoire) is probably a self portrait of the author with the hunchback (Quasimodo) as his dark side. You can think about these juxtapositions without being misled - concepts that nourish.630469861540A3ESCIFRZ3N3OA3ESCIFRZ3N3OJeffrey GriffinMiami, Fl.02009-04-03The best remake.....This version of the immortal story of the Notre Dame bell ringer is second only to the Chaney orginal. Add to Laughton's great performance the intoxicating beauty of Maureen O"Hara and you know you got a winner!!!630469861550A2ATIIXNM1UKF4A2ATIIXNM1UKF4Cameron Shaw02008-10-30The Hunchback of Notre DameSure, it's early Hollywood - Maureen O'Hara's hair remains perfectly styled even after she is tortured - but the film remains for me as fresh and wonderful as when I first saw it in the 1930s. 630469861550A1Y68ST3FKUNERA1Y68ST3FKUNERWilliam LinsleyWilliam L.Shelton CT USA02008-08-22Hunchback of Notre DameTo anyone who has never seen this film: it holds up very well for a film from the late 1930s. The photography and acting are quite good. The extra features on the DVD are better than average. Charles Laughton and the other actors make this work quite well.630469861550A3OFVAM9IMGZPZA3OFVAM9IMGZPZL. K. GrimwoodRori02008-06-28Better than the book...The plot for this hunchback is the precursor of the Disney version, only darker. Charles Laughton brilliantly portrays Quasimado, in one of his best roles. The sets make you believe the movie was filmed on location, in renaissance-era Paris, and you get caught up in the story, with all its stark beauty and tragic ugliness. Black and white.Product DescriptionThis is the second version of victor of hugos classic and its a good one. Laughton plays the piteous hunchback who falls in love with a lovely gypsed girl. Studio: Turner Hm Entertainm Release Date: 09/19/2000 Starring: Edmond Obrian Maureen Ohara Run time: 115 minutesAmazon.comOf the many film versions of Victor Hugo's novel, this classic from Hollywood's golden year of 1939 remains the best, rivaled only by the 1923 silent version starring Lon Chaney. In his triumphant attempt to create a performance as memorable as Chaney's, Charles Laughton played the lovelorn Parisian hunchback Quasimodo under a disfiguring costume and gruesome makeup that rendered the actor almost unrecognizable. The result is a gripping and heartfelt portrayal of the misshapen bell ringer who falls desperately in love with the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda (played by Maureen O'Hara). The lavish production also greatly benefits from exquisitely moody black-and-white cinematography, brilliant medieval set design, and the atmospheric direction by German expatriate William Dieterle, whose style was heavily influenced by German films of the era. The DVD release includes the original theatrical trailer plus an additional audio track with authoritative commentary by film historian Paul Mandell. --Jeff ShannonB000TEUSI6The Hunchback Of I hadn't seen it since I was a boy and I remembered really enjoying it. But I had never seen The Emperor Waltz. Both movies are classic Bing movies, where he is the Sauvé ladies man who sings his way into girls' hearts, but I actually found myself enjoying The Emperor Waltz better than Yankee. It wasn't nearly as silly as Yankee and it was quite romantic. If you like Bing movies I'd definitely give these a try.B00007J5VS50AU2ZGSA1AY529AU2ZGSA1AY529Benjamin J. FoortSeattle, WA52007-10-08Worst of All TimeIf anyone pays attention to the "plot" (or LACK thereof) the plot of the film is so implausible as to be laughable! No ships' Captain would EVER offer his ship and his men to be a sitting duck without first making certain his pilots were trained and under orders to shoot first and ask questions later, rather than BEG to be killed. Also, this film apparently did not have any military consultants. The pilots were swapping aircraft types in mid-air and the ship kept changing from one to another. This film was HILARIOUS!B00005PJ8L50A3THBZ9VAMHWGAA3THBZ9VAMHWGAChristopher E. SarnoBoston, Massachusetts United States02007-04-07THE FLEET THAT CAME TO STAY!!I was twelve [12] years old when I saw this movie on a Saturday afternoon at a neighborhood theater...It had a powerful impact on my immature grasp of things then...it is a beautiful made movie during the anxious WW2 years about the US Navy and its pilots...just listen to the inspiring/heroic musical score by Hugo W. Friedhofer [kudos to him] and the easy; yet, Naval discipline as it flows so naturally under the direction of Henry Hathaway...forget the nit-pickers that drag on in here...the United States was losing the War in early 1942, I say again, losing the war all the way down to the tip of Australia...movies like the "Wing" made morale on the home/front soar as high as our Navy flyers could take it...by 1944 when this wonderful film was released, the USA was on the threshold of victory all the way to Tokyo...it was a long dirty way to Tokyo as The Captain alluded to...everytime I see this movie, I see my dearest friend recreated in the role played by Dana Andrews aloft in his Grumman Avenger [TBF]...he was decorated with the Navy Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross for heroic actions against the Japanese Imperial Fleet..movies of this genre will stand the test of time immemorial...the studio bosses knew how to make real movies in this era...I had my WAR in Korea and I [we] know what it takes to defeat America's enemies and this movie, "Wing and a Prayer" demostrates that ever so clearly as the carrier heads for the battle of Midway in 1942....I ask you, "Where were you in 1942"??..Semper Fidelis...SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF. B00005PJ8L50A2MFNDNS1L7D16A2MFNDNS1L7D16JOHN GODFREYMilwaukee ,WI USA12006-11-17 I wanted to see a good WWII Navy movie. This is it. I also know history. This isn't. Yes, there was a Battle of Midway. After that... No matter. lots of action scenes, many of the scenes were actors performing in front of newsreel footage in what we now call a blue screen. Years later we're all so smart it almost seems quaint & we may chuckle. But it is excellent for it's time, which was wartime.
The U.S. military, paranoid as they are, covered up the battle & this movie for a long time. They publicized the Dolittle Tokyo raid which happened a few weeks before to boost the public morale. I would have thought our smashing victory at Midway might have had the same positive effect & a negative one on the Japanese.
The plot: The aircraft carrier USS X was traveling at light speed all over the Pacific so the enemy would think we had lots of carriers. It was traveling without it's escort ships which a carrier never does. It's too valuable. Then our pilots were to fly off the carrier but never engage enemy pilots. They are to run away, so the enemy thinks we are cowards. Of course, the enemy pilots would never think of following them back to their carrier which they could promptly sink since it has none of its escort ships. As history it is totally bogus but as a movie it is great. So I'm sorry if I'm critical. Dana Andrews, William Elthey & Henry Morgan etc. did good imitations of Navy pilots. They flew torpedo planes. In the movie they did a lot of damage & some of them survived. As we now know all the torpedo pilots went down & none of their torpedos hit a Japanese ship (some torpedoes were defective). This does not diminish their heroism or sacrifice. Don Ameche was exceptionally good as the stern, by the book, Cmdr. Bingo Harper. He is cast as the villian all the men love to hate. But he had the toughest job on the ship. I've seen worse than him in peacetime. One of the better war movies.

DescriptionDon Ameche, Dana Andrews, William Eythe and Richard Jaeckel star in this acclaimed film about newly-trained pilots assigned to an aircraft carrier immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor. I was searching out old classic films I wanted to have in my library, and this was a must. Watching it now was every bit as powerful as it was then(perhaps more so in some ways). I am closing this with a reqote of another review I left for another classic film I purchased in the same way, The Robe.....

Films like this go most unappreciated by younger people, who have been hypnotized by all the new bells & whistles of the new films. It takes a respect for what they did when they had what they had to do it with! And more often than not, even without the bells & whistles, they did a better job then, than the new films do with them now(in my opinion of course).B00015HX9050A2UHX8ZR3878XNA2UHX8ZR3878XNMelvin A. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom KeoghB000056BP4Ben-HurB0000633QWJesus of NazarethB0002BO05SThe Greatest Story Ever Told (Movie Only Edition)B00005NKT7The RobeB00005NKT6The Bible ...
