These DVD's are real close to the books. This is a very good collection!B0009PVZMS50A2YVOK8ZB4E7X5A2YVOK8ZB4E7X5KevansBig KBlair, Nebraska USA02009-04-10Dicken's LibraryMost of these productions are excellent, with the exception of Hard Times which carries the label BBC Student or School, but it appears to be someones assignment and the story is okay, but the production values are low. Cast is good and it is worth watching once. The rest of the productions are excellent. My favorite is Our Mutual Friend.B0009PVZMS11A2POT13FER5L82A2POT13FER5L82itSunnyvale, CA USA152008-10-07serious problemsThere is a reason that so many after market retailers here on amazon have these at a steep discount. In my case, three of the six DVDs refused to play on my high end, very expensive Onkio DVD player. Of those three, one refused to play on my Dell computer. The remaining reminded me of a joke told to me by a Stanford Ph.D. mathematician-philosopher. The tools of a mathematician are pencil, paper, and waste paper basket. The tools of a philosopher are paper and pencil. These stories were originally serials in magazines. Dickens had to submit so many words on a scheduled basis and did not have a firm ideal of where the story was going. This is in sharp contrast to Kipling who would take his finished work and make several passes of cutting out whole sentences to compact the story down to a fast paced adventure. Dickens did not do this when the stories were published in book form.

These programs are very long winded. They could have been easily edited down to 1/2 of their length without losing any of their content. Product DescriptionStudio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/27/2005 Rating: NrAmazon.comAs can be clearly seen from the care lavished on these six BBC adaptions of Charles Dickens' novels, the British love their Dickens! And why not--Dickens is ideally suited to television, with his elaborate but vigorous plots, each a compendium of comically odious personalities (and one or two nice folk, just to keep things from getting too awful). Actors dig into these meaty roles with zeal, delighting in the hairpin turns from macabre horror to sweet sentiment. The more popular (and most frequently adapted) of the books at hand--Great Expectations and Oliver Twist--are the most conventional. The 1981 mini-series Expectations (in which young Pip learns the pitfalls of wealth through his relationship with the rich and bitter Mrs. Havishamand and her warped ward, Estella) is dutiful to its source but not adapted with much inspiration. Twist, from 1985, fares better; it's a zippy treatment of this tale of childhood deprivation and juvenile delinquency, and the horrors of Victorian orphanages will raise your hackles. The adaptation is capable but a little flat--still, any story where an undertaker observes, "Every tear is another shilling in the till," is clearly not lacking in wicked wit.
Fortunately, the others are considerably juicier: Martin Chuzzlewit, a lesser-known but richly satirical book, has a star-studded production from 1994, featuring Paul Scofield, Tom Wilkinson, Pete Postlethwaite, and Julia Sawalha, among others. The wealthy Martin Chuzzlewit, deeply suspicious of all mankind due to being hounded by greedy, grasping relatives, threatens the happiness of his ward Mary and his namesake grandson. In addition to the sterling and energetic cast, Chuzzlewit has outstanding production values, as does the 1998 version of Our Mutual Friend, which goes to great lengths to evoke the textures of life in Dickens' London. The mysterious death of a man about to inherit a great fortune sets in motion a complex plot that intertwines two love stories (it's one of Dickens' most romantic works), social scheming, and murderous obsession. The names aren't quite as famous (such as Paul McGann, Timothy Spall, Anna Friel, and Keeley Hawes), but the performances are top-notch and the script is particularly dynamic.

Bleak House, a Kafka-esque story of young innocents caught in an all-consuming, multi-generational lawsuit, cultivates a rich and potent Gothic horror; the 19th century seems like an unnerving alien world, through which lawyers and policemen stride like cruel predators. Diana Rigg is the most famous face in this 1985 production, but strong performances abound. The final component of this box set is the most curious: A 1994 version of Hard Times starring Alan Bates and Richard E. Grant, which turns this dark story--about a schoolmaster/politician who raises his children on reason at the expense of all feeling and finally reaps the bitter rewards--into a compact, theatrical feature film that's so swift it's almost jaunty. Adapted and directed by Peter Barnes (writer of The Ruling Class), it's the most stylized production of the bunch, and while lacking the depth and narrative detail of the others, it effectively cuts to the essence of Dickens. --Bret Fetzer
B000FQIRYKThe Charles Dickens Collection, Vol. 2 (David Copperfield / The Pickwick Papers / The Old Curiosity Shop / Dombey and Son)B000M2E32CThe George Eliot Collection (Middlemarch / Daniel Deronda / Silas Marner / Adam Bede / The Mill on the Floss)B000244FFUJane Austen Collection (Sense & Sensibility / Emma / Persuasion / Mansfield Park / Pride & Prejudice / Northanger Abbey)B000BNTMKKThe Anthony Trollope Collection (The Barchester Chronicles / He Knew He Was Right / The Way We Live Now)B000E8QVAGThe Shaw Collection (Pygmalion / The Millionairess / Arms and the Man / The Devil's Disciple / Mrs. Warren's Profession / Heartbreak House)163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163407General163396Horror404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video415914General163450Television404276Genres130DVD139452Video548142All BBC Titles518570BBC251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video759316Gift Sets518570BBC251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422072Elliott, Denholm421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video427920Hickson, Joan426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429982Johns, Stratford429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431184Kensit, Patsy430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video433826Lloyd, Bernard432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video436382McGann, Paul434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448560Sundquist, Gerry444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video448338Stratton, John444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599830Drama501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video599836Television501230Boxed Sets251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video454180Amyes, Julian454022( A )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video455610Clark, Lawrence Gordon455278( C )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355682011All BBC Titles355680011BBC Television355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355695011Gift Sets355680011BBC Television355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600330All Titles515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600318Drama515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video600320Horror515794Warner Home Video468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579516( C )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video672579011The Kids and Family Mega Sale: DVDs, Toys, and Customized Music44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1265183011Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Trade-In44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video672577011Amazon.com Movies & TV: Special Feature 616285171Featured Stores49598011Special Features130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video388395011Boxed Set390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405384011Unrated405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - Hester02009-03-31Movie reviewI have thought for a long time it was a very good movie but owning it and having a copy I can watch whenever I want is a whole lot better. The copy is very good and plays well.B00009YXHG41A1ONM4ZFDW36A2A1ONM4ZFDW36A2Vind3d12008-02-17What if Monty Python made a vampire movie ?What if Monty Python made a vampire movie ?

That would make a good tag line to describe this film.

And while our baddie is not a vampire, but rather a
snake goddess, a snake goddess with really big fangs,
you get the idea.

Hugh Grant, early in his career plays a hair-brained
dare-do-all. Catherine Oxenberg is his dumb,
blond bombshell girlfriend (apologies to Ms.
Oxenberg). And some awesome british character
actors fill out the entourage.

And how does one go about fighting a snake goddess ?
Why with Hindu snake charmer music blasting from the
castle walls over loud speakers and an angry little
snake-hating mongoose of course!

This is not your typical Horror movie with axe and
chainsaw weilding psychopaths. But rather evil in the
disguise of shiney latex bodysuits, 6-inch stilettos
and black lace garter belts.

Filmed on location in merry old England amidst dreary
dairy farms and haunted castles our director
expertly assembles his cast of good guys and a really
bad, bad girl, played with a mesmerizing performance
by Amanda Donahoe. Remember her as Jim
Carrey's boss in Liar Liar ?

And lets not forget the eerie and sexy soundtrack
laced with synthisers and sexy saxaphone. And oh yes, the
occasional bagpipes! And a rousing song about the
dread Dampton worm by the local village rock band is very
entertaining.

Miss Donahoe steals the show from Mr. Grant and Ms.
Oxenberg. In one scene she literally slithers across
the stage thanks to some tricky camera work by
director Ken Russell.

And believe me Mr. Russell is full of tricks in this
Infernal Parade of Mischievous Mayhem. Half the
time instead of trying to scare you to death, the
director is out to make you laugh to death, and then gasp to
death at all the crazy chaos he delivers with dry
british humor making this a one of a kind romp.

Not for the faint of heart, the easily offended, the
traditional teen movie slasher fan or probably anyone
else for that matter !!!

You will either hate this film or be really, really
embarressed to tell your friends how much you love
this Masterpiece of Camp.Lair of the White WormB00009YXHG31ABO2ZI2Y5DQ9TABO2ZI2Y5DQ9TTsuyoshi22008-02-10Very Weird Story from Ken Russell Words cannot describe my feelings when I first saw it about ten years ago. I have seen it again and I still don't know how I should write about it, but one thing is clear; the film is never boring. Ken Russell's "The Lair of the White Worm" is certainly "weird" and "campy," but those words are not strong enough to express my impression after watching this film, which is fascinating in more than one way.

The story opens with a curious skull found by archaeologist Angus (Peter Capaldi) in the ruins of a convent. It is only the beginning of a series of weird occurrences including the return of seductive, evil, venom-spitting Lady Sylvia Marsh (intentionally and delightfully over-the-top Amanda Donohoe), who plans to do something very bad and bizarre for a strange creature that lives deep in the cave.

Oh, and don't forget the legend of D'Ampton Worm (told in a catchy song) and Lord James D'Ampton (young Hugh Grant) who just inherited the estate, funny dialogue delivered in a deliberately theatrical fashion and weird hallucinations about Jesus Christ, a big white snake, nuns and Roman soldiers assaulting them. Roger Ebert in his review (two stars out of four) compared this film with Roger Corman's AIP films, but whatever people say about his B-movies, Corman was never called blasphemous. After all "White Worm" is directed by the person who did "Tommy," "Altered States," "Crimes of Passion," "Salome's Last Dance" and "Lady Chatterley."

Besides these extraordinary visions that you must see for yourself, Ken Russell should be praised for one thing, and that is, 95 per cent of the film's updated Bram Stoker story does NOT happen the original novel, usually regarded as the least successful one from the creator of Dracula. And try to find Gina McKee who is to co-star with Hugh Grant in "Notting Hill" 10 years later. B00009YXHG41A3DDPQ9342UNMYA3DDPQ9342UNMYNeil F. DoyleNeilUSA12007-12-08Ken Russell satisfies a taste for the bizarre...Leave it to director Ken Russell to find an obscure Bram Stoker novel and take its most exploitive elements and turn it into a bloodfest of snakes, vampires, virgin sacrifices, phallic symbols, Christian symbolism and more. He throws in some comic book slashings along with some sly humor to create a tacky Gothic horror called THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM. It kept me awake until the last shot where the dimwit hero HUGH GRANT is about to find out he's made another mistake before the screen fades to black. ("How about stopping for a bite?"). This must have been the film that first made Grant known to American audiences.

He plays an aristocrat who is attracted to a new neighbor whom he later learns is a woman (AMANDA DONOHOE) who is keeper of a giant worm waiting to devour people whole if she decides to feed victims to it. She's played with delicious relish by Donohoe, who picks up a scout trudging along a deserted country road and must quickly dispose of him in a bath when Grant knocks on her door.

It's weird stuff from start to finish, but try to look away! It's typical Ken Russell overkill--or should I say overbite--since much of the action involves vampirism and some friendly suburbanites who suddenly grow fangs. Handsomely photographed in color with attractive settings indoor and out, it provides a steady mix of laughter and fright while managing to be entertaining despite the overly weird material.

CATHERINE OXENBERG plays the virginal heroine who falls under the spell of the demonic woman, at her best when forced to assume a vacant expression. PETER CAPALDI is excellent as Hugh's friend who comes to her aid before the white worm can do its work and claim another victim.

Silly stuff, but if you like the work of Ken Russell, you should find it extremely interesting to watch.

B00009YXHG51A3DDZ0E4ADFFNMA3DDZ0E4ADFFNMS. JacksonDuncan BC12007-11-30Campy Cult Movie with the usual cast of creeps and evildoersA cult movie that will thrill Hugh Grant Fans and anyone who likes Ken Russell movies. A lot of the regular cast and crew. An archaeologist digs up a massive skull of an ancient snake or white worm. A strange woman moves into the neighbourhood and the local lord's girlfriend disappears as does a boy scout. This movie has snakes, snake charmers, naked priestesses, innocent young women hostages who manage to keep their underwear clean after days in captivity, brave men, vampires, the lot.

You're gonna love it.Product DescriptionHugh Grant, Amanda Donohoe and Catherine Oxenberg star in this mix of heart-stopping horror and campy humor. James D'Ampton (Grant) returns to his country castle in England. Legend has it that James' distant ancestor once slayed the local dragon-a monstrous white worm with a fondness for the sweet flesh of virgins.

The young Lord dismisses the legend as folklore, until archaeology student, Angus Flint, unearths a massive reptilian skull and the ancient worship site of a pagan snake god on James' property.

When James' virtuous girlfriend, Eve (Oxenburg), suddenly disappears, he and Angus set out to investigate the foreboding cavern said to be the worm's lair, where a centuries-old mystery begins to uncoil.
Features:

WIdeScreen version

2.0 Dolby Stereo Surround

Scene Access

Interactive Menus

System Requirements:

Run Time: 93 Min

Format: DVD MOVIEAmazon.comWittily updated from one of Dracula author Bram Stoker's lesser-known horror novels, The Lair of the White Worm is a camp classic that only Ken Russell could have delivered. It's got all the perversity one expects from the bombastic director of Tommy and Altered States: sensible plotting, intelligent dialogue laced with double entendre, graphic imagery with Boschian intensity, and a mischievous disregard for good taste and decorum. In other words, it's heretically hilarious, especially when skeptical Lord D'Ampton (fresh-faced Hugh Grant, in one of his earliest films) begins to suspect that seductive neighbor Sylvia (Amanda Donohoe, game for anything) is connected to the local legend of a monstrous serpent that feeds on sacrificial virgins. Evidence mounts with the help of a local archaeologist (Peter Capaldi) and two endangered sisters (Catherine Oxenberg, Sammi Davis), and Russell infuses Stoker's grisly plot with his inimitable brand of blasphemy, including a gouged eyeball, a venom-splattered crucifix, Roman soldiers raping nuns (in a delirious hallucination sequence), and some of the funniest one-liners since Young Frankenstein. Von Werra is played with a muted but still smug swagger by Hardy Kruger,a favorite of mine since SUNDAYS AND CYBELE (LES DIMANCHES DE VILLES D'AVRAY) which won the Oscar for Best Foreign film in 1962. The pilot's sole goal is to be assigned to a POW camp so he can go about the business of escaping, the Brits however, are more concerned with trying to pry information out of him--even going so far as to suggest that his well-known heroics might be all so much fakery and they will expose his deceit to the other German prisoners. No go, he ain't buying it even though what they say may very well be true. He simply doesn't care.

Finally they give up and he's sent to a camp from which he quickly attempts an escape but is just as quickly captured and shipped off to another camp. At the second camp the escape is more organized a la THE GREAT ESCAPE but with much the same results for von Werra. And so it goes until he is shipped off to Canada with other escape prone Germans, where he makes his final bid for freedom. The fact that this film was made so soon after the end of WWII is surprising and the fact that Kruger can still makes us feel so much empathy for his character and genuinely make us hope for him to succeed is a testament to both Kruger's abilities as an actor and to the writers and to director Roy Ward Baker. Don't forget to read the epilogue and find out what happened to von Werra after he left Canada! Its very ironic.
B0014BJ1CM20A1UZ1QKMGXS0YLA1UZ1QKMGXS0YLDavid D. The film is based on a true story of a escaped german wwII prisoner setting his sights on the then nuetral USA. An OK film.B0014BJ1CM40A1OYW08VVPMP3QA1OYW08VVPMP3QJames D. CrabtreeDoc CrabtreeGuantanamo Bay, Cuba02009-03-03Great Film!In this film Kruger plays a Luftwaffe pilot (von Wirra) who is shot down over England. He is determined to make it back and fight again and his attempts to escape ultimately lead to his distinction as the only German pilot to return to combat after being held as a POW of the British. The suspense is not as dramatic as in other films but perhaps a bit more realistic. At one point he even makes it to the cockpit of a Hurricane! An interesting movie, filmed in black and white. WWII movies always seemed more real to me when they are in black and white.B0014BJ1CM50A2TUXE0L7RP2AHA2TUXE0L7RP2AHJ. Marus02009-02-16HARDY KRUGER IS TOO GORGEOUS TO BE TRUE. THE HANDSOMEST MAN IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.I have to say I first discovered Hardy Kruger in a main title role in The One That Got Away and after seeing him in this I have to say he is definitely the handsomest, most attractive man in the entire cosmos. He was unbelievably gorgeous in The One That Got Away. I felt so sorry for him though what he had to go through in that movie, trying his best to escape the British through all the stepping stones he encountered trying to get to a neutral nation. It made me want to just jump in the film and help him and even stay with him forever. I really would have loved to have joined him any day on such an escaping adventure. Everytime I watch this film I always imagine me aiding him in his escape and having him carry me in the rain and the freezing snow and assuring him that he'd really get away, that I loved him and that I would have stayed with him forever. Hardy is the most beautiful man to me and he forever will be.B0014BJ1CM50AAW58LG72PG7IAAW58LG72PG7IMartin AsinerAdjunct College InstructorJersey City, NJ02009-02-12An Unexpected PerspectiveTHE ONE THAT GOT AWAY belongs to the rather small genre of films that show the Second World War from the German perspective. Unlike films like DAS BOOT and THE DESERT FOX, which tended to present the war from the collective focus of a combat arm of the German Army, THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY is presented solely from the vantage of one man, Oberleutnant Franz Von Werra of the Luftwaffe, who, in 1940 was shot down over England and was taken prisoner. The plot is rather straightforward. Von Werra refuses to remain in a POW camp and spends the bulk of the film in attempting to escape. Eventually he does as he returns to Germany and is hailed as a hero by Hitler, is promoted to Kapitan, and is awarded the Iron Cross.

What marks the film as remarkably entertaining is a combination of efforts ranging from the bravura performance of Hardy Kruger as Von Werra to the sure directing of Roy Ward Baker and finally to the gritty and clammy weather that figured so prominently in the plot that the snow, ice, and sleet virtually insinuated themselves as a subtext against which Von Werra battled incessantly. First, with Kruger's interpretation of Von Werra--it was difficult not to sympathize with him, then later to root for him. Kruger spoke excellect if accented English, was boyishly handsome, was possessed of an incredible sense of self that would not admit of failure, and ultimately had that ever so rare sense of timing that inevitably led to success. Regardless of his situation, he could immediately size up who was present and using nothing more than bluster and instinct could manipulate both man and machine for his own ends. Kruger fails in his first two attempts, and at each recapture, you can practically hear the "twang" in his head as he mentally reviews his failure and plots his next escape. He even can boast to his English jailer that he will bet cognac against cigarettes that he will succeed in less than six months.

It is not only Kruger as Von Werra that marks this film as extraordinary. The English who capture him and hold him prisoner are a thoroughly unimaginative lot, totally devoid of a sense of humor that makes Von Werra by contrast seem a shining presence. His pursuers are a dogged group of soldiers who succeed in capturing him only because of some bad luck on Von Werra's part. Further, though Von Werra is a Luftwaffe ace, he is no Nazi. In fact, his relation to the Nazi party is downplayed as is his relation to the general war effort. The focus of the film is exclusively on one man versus the System. The fact that the System is the British POW camp leadership is beside the point. Not many films would dare attempt to make a German the hero when to do so is to threaten to throw its balance off center. That the audience can momentarily not be concerned with being off balance is a tribute to a film that is a true classic of the escape genre. I wasn't too pleased with his version of 'The Old Curiosity Shop,' so I approached Great Expectations with some hesitancy. Like many of Amyes' productions, the strength of his theatre trained actors carry the show. The cast in "Expectations" was exceptional-especially Gerry Sundquist as Pip and Stratford Johns as Magwitch. Joan Hickson is also incredible as the jilted bride, Miss Havisham. Some of the negative reviews on this page point to the length of this production. I watched this entire series in two nights and didn't find it excessively long. In fact, it was edited quite well and at the end of each episode there was an appropriate amount of suspense. Despite it's length, the story is easy to follow especially if you're not familiar with this tale. In a nutshell, it concerns Pip, a young boy of low birth who suddenly finds his wish to be a gentleman fulfilled with the aid of a secret benefactor. There are many themes but none as important as social division, revenge, and the consequences of subterfuge. Dickens is a master of finding intricate and clever ways to intertwine his characters and make even the most insignificant person become vastly important to his stories. This series has immense value and it's unfortunate it has been reviewed so negatively simply because it was filmed in segments and it was "too bleak." Please. Bleakness was part of Dickens' world, but, as with 'Expectations," his characters experience redemption, transformation, and justice for the oppressed. B0009PVZK051API9P3T66IQAZAPI9P3T66IQAZKellee M. LyonslovevaldaLa Verne, CA USA12008-12-15Great Expectations MovieI have been teaching Great Expectations for 10 years. I bought this movie version on VHS 10 years ago, but when it died 2 years ago I never replaced it. I tried the Disney version instead and I hated it. I bought the BBC version on DVD this year and the students love it. The characters are believable and they look like how Dickens described them. I highly recommend this movie.B0009PVZK041A2ZWTFZRNQW7D5A2ZWTFZRNQW7D5Jeremy Storly12008-10-26A Charming Adaptation of one of the World's Greatest BooksMake yourself a haystack of buttered toast, pour yourself some tea, and try to resist the urge to steal the pork pie and brandy from the pantry. Originally produced by the BBC as a TV mini-series, this is the adaptation to see for those who enjoy Dickens for enjoyment's sake. All the characters are here, and all your favorite scenes from the novel (with the exception of Wemmick's wedding scene, one of the most delightful comic scenes from the book, which is sadly absent).

Okay, so the acting is not superb, the settings often seem stagey, and Julian Amyes is not about to win any awards for originality, but this is a production that is to be enjoyed in spite of its flaws, a movie that is to be treasured for its faithfulness, not for its artistic merit. Its length may seem daunting, but, like Dickens' novel, this was created as a serial and may be enjoyed over the course of a week or more. There are certainly much worse ways to spend 351 minutes of your life. Enjoy the film!

NOTE: For those looking for a more earnest, concise production of 'Great Expectations', the 1999 Julian Jarrold version that ran on Masterpiece Theatre is highly recommended.B0009PVZK015A1NVIEXCA20W7NA1NVIEXCA20W7NReliable Reviews TooCarmel Valley, CA72007-04-05Mr. Dickens's Divorce Tells in this Story.
Mr. Dickens wrote the strange story "Great Expectations" in 1861, after leaving his wife. Mr. Dickens married his wife Catherine in 1836. They were married 21-years; during which he wrote his great novels: "Oliver Twist"-1839, "A Christmas Carol"-1843, and "David Copperfield"-1850. Mr. Dickens left his wife and mother of ten children, about 1857.

Unlike "Great Expectations", Mr. Dickens's great novels follow a high-minded thought; balance with moments of cheer, triumph for the main character, adventure, and interesting characters. A novel is not a classic just because it is: old, assigned by your English teacher, or written by the writer of other novels indeed brilliant. "Great Expectations" has portions which show Mr. Dickens's ability; however overall it lacks the charm and elements that make his other stories great, true, enjoyable, classics.

This 1981-version has a better first episode than the 1999-version; but then drags painfully; wearing the viewer out. Too much time on the dreary. The 1999-version leaves you empty in the end. The 1947-version of "Great Expectations" is best; with John Mills, father of Haley Mills. The 1947-version pulls out the cheerier portions of the novel and focuses on them, for a story of some interest.

Mr. Dickens's, "Nicholas Nickelby", written in 1839, is better.
B0009PVZK021A32EC3IDXAQY5JA32EC3IDXAQY5JDCBBloomington, IL62007-01-26Not worth the money or the time.I agree with the other reviews about too much emphasis on the bleak, and dragging on interminably. No movement. No captivation. Unfortunately filmed in short segments, so you have to deal with opening and closing credits, etc. frequently.

I did find it hard to follow the dialog with the various dialects of the characters, so I wanted to use subtitle. Alas! Subtitles are not enabled on DVDs in this series (BBC white covers). I switched from viewing the DVD via the component connection to viewing via the coax "VCR" connection. That allowed me to take advantage of the television's closed captioning capabilities. However, I had to sacrifice picture quality.DescriptionViolence and Victorian gentility meet in this powerful adaptation of one of Dickens's greatest creations. While passing through the churchyard where his mother is buried, a young Pip encounters a desperate convict, Magwitch. Soon afterward he is summoned by the wealthy, eccentric recluse Miss Havisham to play with her beautiful but cruel ward Estella. This was a movie that I watched hoping that each scene might be the final one. It was a rental so I figured I might as well watch it in case it suddenly morphed into something worthwhile; it didn't.

The problems with "Dance with a Stranger" are numerous but could have easily been corrected if the format had been changed. The promotional notes on the DVD case point out, in one sentence, that the main character (I can't remember her name) was the last woman executed in Great Britain. It mentions that again, in one sentence, at the end of the movie. That's the only way we know this. The events leading up to, but not including, her arrest is the full scope of the movie. The movie would have been so much more if it had been a courtroom drama with flashbacks supplementing the various testimonies. Frankly, the movie moved along so slowly, I kept wishing the lady would get the job over with. I stopped the recorded movie about halfway through to watch the 3rd period of a college hockey game and then went back to it.

I confess that part of my problem was my hearing limitation. I've been told that I can't hear certain levels of sound and that must include upper class English social conversations. Most movies in those settings leave me missing at least a third of the conversation. It's either that or turning up the vollume so high that everyone in the household wakes up immediately if anyone in the movie started a car or shot a gun. I finally sought help with subtitles although I had to settle for Spanish. That was the one redeeming aspect of the movie for me; it helped me brush up on my Spanish. This is a movie about people who are, frankly, just not interesting. I'm sorry that the two main characters died in real life and I'm sorry that I watched an actor and actress in their roles die on the screen. B000053VAT50A1F5TX0VK6AMUQA1F5TX0VK6AMUQTodd SchaffnerFalls Church, Va USA02008-03-12Miranda Richardson is tremendous playing Ruth EllisI became interested in the history of capital punishment in Great Britain during 2007. In looking up this subject on the internet I discovered the case of Ruth Ellis, whose murder case, conviction, and execution remains controversial to this day. Miranda Richardson became a "star" from starring in Dance With A Stranger playing Ruth Ellis. I bought the film and have seen it several times and have become a Miranda Richardson fan. I am a citizen of "Mirandatia" as her fans are called on the net.
Our sympathies are with Ruth Ellis from her first meeting with David Blakely in 1954-55. He seduces her, makes love to her, and then abuses and ignores her. Ruth Ellis fatally shoots Blakely in April of 1955 and is tried, convicted and hanged for her crime.
I wish this film had included her trial and the last days of her life as
Ruth Ellis awaited her execution. Much of the British public protested
her hanging, and that protest aided in eventually abolishing capital punishment in Britain ten years later.
In a sense, Ruth Ellis "lives" due to the notoriety of her case. I feel
that Miranda Richardson brings her to life in Dance With A Stranger and
this makes the film worth seeing and Miranda Richardson's career worth
following.B000053VAT51A10ODC971MDHV8A10ODC971MDHV8John FarrThe Best Movies by Farr12007-07-06Dacne with a StrangerBeautifully rendered, superbly acted film recreates events leading up to one of England's most famous crimes of passion. Newell painstakingly revives the look and feel of 1950's London, using this sordid affair to examine the ingrained class differences that doomed the couple from the start. Richardson, Everett, and Holm are marvels to watch, and the film's shattering climax is worth waiting for. Catch this chilling romantic thriller.B000053VAT52A324A25PC1DFMFA324A25PC1DFMFDarryl K. Clarkpywakkitspringfield, missouri22007-05-10great depiction of a real life tragedythis film has stayed with me because of miranda richardson's showy performance as ruth ellis. she is a woman that is barely in control of her life, then relationships with the wrong men at the same time destroys her. the script by shelagh delaney works the facts into a tight dramatic collection of scenes and moments peppered through with taut dialogue. the stylings and visuals evoke an inky, foggy london that was still struggling to get back on its feet after world war ii. and richardson is supported ably by pretty boy rupert everett as david blakely and ian holm as desmond cussen, the two men in ellis' short and trauma-filled life. perhaps, the most tragic element of the story though, is not ellis' destruction of herself but her unknowing destruction of her son.B000053VAT515A2GCHG6U8HTVITA2GCHG6U8HTVITC. O. DeRiemerSan Antonio, Texas, USA152005-07-06A Disturbing Movie With Extraordinary ActingRuth Ellis (Miranda Richardson) was a night club hostess in one of London's private clubs. It was a Spring evening in 1954 when David Blakely (Rupert Everett) walked in with some friends. Little more than a year later, Ruth Ellis was hanged for the murder of Blakely. The movie tells the compelling, tawdry, almost inevitable story of what happened.

Ellis was divorced and living with her young son above the club she helped manage. She bleached her hair, knew how to keep men laughing and buying, and was definitely not part of the upper class system. Blakely was a race car driver, wealthy, young, selfish, had the right friends, and had never had to face any real responsibility in his life. With some mixture of lust and need, the two of them instantly became entangled in each others' lives. "Where do you live?" he asks her. "Over the shop," she says. "Can I take you home tonight?" "Yes." Their affair follows a pattern. First lust, then tears, abuse, his forgetting her for a while, her desperation, and lust again. She has one friend, Desmond Cussen (Ian Holm). Cussen loves her but is the type of man who can't quite get up the nerve to kiss her, much less invite her to bed. He trails after her and tries to pick up the pieces. Cussen knows the kind of man Blakely is. "Why can't you leave him alone," he once shouts at Ellis. "He's so involved with himself he can't think of anything else." The results are predictable. Ellis slides further into misery and fixation the more Blakely takes her for granted and forgets about her at times. One night she takes a pistol, follows him to a pub, and when he leaves she carefully puts two bullets in his chest.

The trial was a great event in Britain. It had everything: sex, the class system, a tawdry affair. The legal system couldn't deal with her fast enough. The trial started June 20, 1955. She was hanged July 13. Ruth Ellis was the last woman hanged by the British.

The movie is excellent and the performances are extraordinary. Rupert Everett was 26 when he made the film. He's perfect as the product of a privileged system, so selfish as to be cowardly, so self involved that he misses entirely what he is doing to Ellis, or even care if he did realize. Miranda Richardson at 27 carries the movie. Her performance made her a star. I can't describe what she does except that every word she says and every step she takes just rings true. She is utterly mesmerizing.

This is, in my view, one of the movies that can probably be called great. You'll be thinking about it for some time. The DVD picture looks fine. The only extra is an alternate ending, which is disposable.Description"Densely packed with social and psychological nuances" (Variety), Dance With A Stranger is based on the true story of the last woman hanged in England. Starring Miranda Richardson in her "spectacular movie debut" (Vogue), along with Rupert Everett and Ian Holm, Dance With A Stranger is the "stunning, powerful [and] fascinating"(Vogue) winner of the 1985 Cannes Best Picture Award. Ruth Ellis (Richardson) is a private dancer with a tough exterior. But her armor begins to crack when she meets wealthy racecar driver David Blakely (Everett). And despite warnings against the affair by her friend and would-be lover Desmond Cussen (Ian Holm), Ellis is quickly seduced by Blakely's charms. But when his passions turn cold, she is caught in a dark dance of obsession that gives way to desperation and finally culminates in a deadly confrontation that shatters the stillness one fateful night with a shocking act'that may ultimately destroy them both.Amazon.comOn July 13, 1955, Ruth Ellis became the last woman to be hanged in England. With a smart, tough little script by Shelagh Delaney, Mike Newell's noir-ish film is a dissection of the human frustration and complex class issues surrounding her crime. Miranda Richardson, looking like some delicious, chilled confection, plays Ellis, the hostess to a "glorified brothel" who plans for a better life with her young son until she meets David Blakely (a young, gorgeous Rupert Everett), the wealthy ne'er-do-well whose fitful attentions chip away her armor. Their vicious attraction and its constant tug-of-war lose some dramatic pull as the story heads toward its inevitable climax, but Richardson's performance holds your attention. She plays the entire film in a kind of stunned ardor, a feisty little animal caught in the headlights of Everett's sullen magnetism. By the time she's plugging bullets into his body, she's already hit you a few time with her heated, fatal despair. --Steve WieckingB0002ABUNYAnother CountryB001L57ZZGThe DuchessB001PPLJIQThe ReaderB001DJ7PR8Vicky Cristina BarcelonaB0000ARD7OUnconditional Love579586Drama579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video579588General579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video722735011General AAS579580British Cinema284926By Country163313Art House & International404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video291259Biography291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740118Class Differences291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video740126Psychological Drama291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163395True Story291236By Theme163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video722753011General AAS163394Love & Romance163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video923878General512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video722787011General AAS541980Crime512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video292287Mystery512030Mystery & Suspense404276Genres130DVD139452Video422424Everett, Rupert421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428328Holm, Ian426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video429982Johns, Stratford429340( J )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431384Kilmer, Joanne Whalley430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435196Manville, Lesley434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443518Richardson, Miranda442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450116Troughton, David448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video460328Newell, Mike460246( N )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355713011Drama355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video355715011General355678011British Cinema355667011Foreign & International251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video595276All MGM Titles468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video501222MGM DVDs Under $20468384MGM Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579518( D )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671501011Letterboxed390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620900111980 - I give it four stars because I think Eric underplayed his character, and his performance came off a bit too laconic for my taste. You may have a different opinion. The story idea is funny: two babies abandoned at birth and mistakenly placed with the wrong families meet again purely by coincidence, and one spends much of the movie trying to do the other in, with (predictably) hilarious results. But it's hard to believe that Tommy and Henry are the same age--Eric is rather wrinkled for a supposedly 30-year-old man. And it's hard to believe that Tommy hasn't figured out he's not Pakistani. I think that was supposed to be funny, but it didn't work that way for me.

The good news is that it comes off nicely and is fun to watch. Eric's turn as Tommy's hippie dad in the beginning of the movie is great--he looks spot-on like Sonny Bono. Rick is a likeably quirky character, and the only honest one of the bunch. John Cleese is brilliant as the sleazy lawyer, Shadgrind. Barbara Hershey's turn as the nymphomaniac Duchess of Bournemouth is just subtle enough to be interesting and just over-the-top enough to be really funny. Catherine Zeta-Jones does a great job as Henry's gorgeous, gold-digging fiancee.

It all ends happily, though there's a lot of doubt right up till the last moments of the film. There's a Pythonesque tag at the end that's good for laughs. Enjoy!B00049QJO850AHI3XHC8XG00QAHI3XHC8XG00QEliza Grohall02007-12-03The BestThe movie is great. Everything arrived in excellent condition. The only thing I thought strange was the movie does not have a DVD Root Menu, but that has nothing to do with the vendor. First off, this is NOT a python movie. That's right out! So, trying to anticipate this as a Python film and not getting one is inevitably disappointing. With that said I thought the idea was funny, the film was funny, Barbara Hershey is gorgeous and only Catherine Zeta Jones is more enticing. This reminds me of the movie "The Grifters", where you get to see the young Annette Bening, before she destroyed her looks with nicotine. Catherine Zeta Jones is amazingly gorgeous here and worth seeing. Even nicer to see is Eric and John working together, like Michael Palin and John Cleese in "A Fish Called Wanda". I thought the movie was funny, I enjoy watching it again and if there was any let down, it was the rather flat delivery of Rick Moranis.Product DescriptionAn american klutz and a british banker compete for the title of the 15th duke of bournemouth. Some silliness but almost never clever, it's hard to imagine anyone liking this film short. I am writing this review for one reason only, lower your expectactions as much as you possibly can and then divide it in half. This is how far this falls below any of the Monty Python work. If you want some good post-Python work, go for Ripping Yarns with Michael Palin, it's clever and funny and even the cheap gags fit into a much level of sophistication.B0000A5L2D40A3E564LLMDPHCSA3E564LLMDPHCSG. Lyonsmusic and film afficionadoPleasantville, USA02007-08-06John Cleese takes a turn at Conan-DoyleAnything involving a Python rates three stars just off the bat. And John Cleese is a master at the stuffy, but slightly disoriented type he played so well in A Fish Called Wanda, and as the schoolteacher in Life Of Brian. But this movie lacks stronger writing, mainly because of the other "sleuths" played by imitators, which is not funny. The well-known TV and movie detectives, from Charlie Chan to Steve McGarrett, were badly portrayed. A similar un-funny scenario was brought out in Jackie Chan's Fantasy Mission Farce. However, the plot was okay, and the character of Dr. Watson's grandson was well-drawn and played (funnier even than Dudley Moore's version of Watson). It's a must for the Python completist, but not essential for the rest of the world. If I were to release this on DVD, I'd interrupt the scene with the pseudo-sleuths making their cameos (including a Bogie impersonator!) by inserting Graham Chapman's Army Major: "Stop all this! This is silly!", and then speed forward to the final scene involving Moriarty's descendent. That would make this a four-star film.B0000A5L2D50A47ZTYZTX783JA47ZTYZTX783JSheri L. PritchardSacramento, CA United States22007-02-12John Cleese - The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know ItEXCELLENT ITEM!!B0000A5L2D33AWLFVCT9128JVAWLFVCT9128JVDave_42Dave_42Australia42006-09-05Silly, But Funny!"The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It" is an outrageous comedy which was first shown on the 18th of September in 1977. It is a spoof staring John Cleese, and it spoofs the American Government, Sherlock Holmes, other famous detectives from literature and television with just a bit of James Bond and the Six Million Dollar Man thrown in, just in case that wasn't enough. Also appearing in the film is Connie Booth, who was Cleese's wife and also appeared with him in "Fawlty Towers" (one of the funniest British comedies of all time). This movie was made between the first season (1975) and the second season (1979), and has a much wilder premise than that series.

In this movie, the grandchildren of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Professor Moriarty are once again at odds, as Moriarty is threatening to end civilization as we know it. Cleese is Arthur Sherlock-Holmes, the much less effective detective grandson. Arthur Lowe plays Dr. William Watson, the most dimwitted one ever, and someone that Homes keeps around just for his bionic bits (nose and leg).

The plot of the movie is outrageous and really doesn't matter when all is said and done. It plays out like "The Bicycle Tour" episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, in that it seems to be a series of skits all linked together by a rather odd story line. There are very funny spoofs of Kissinger and Ford, and ridiculous stereotypes played to the max in a couple of world delegate scenes. Other funny scenes include Holmes and Watson doing a crossword, Watson pulling the knife out of the chief inspector's back and then realizing that it would have been better had he left it in, and the where Holmes finds there are two Watsons.

I admit I have had a soft spot in my heart for this movie ever since I first saw it when I was young. I was worried that it would not be as good now that I am older, but while it is certainly very silly it still has a lot of laughs. I would have gone with four stars on this, but I was disappointed with the video quality and to a lesser extent the sound. It is a short film, running roughly 55 minutes long. There are no extra features on the DVD.
DescriptionJohn Cleese is hilarious as the descendant of Sherlock Holmes in this modern detective drama of international power politics and intrigue. Unlike his illustrious grandfather however, this Sherlock Holmes only succeeds in bungling every job he organizes.
