AlavisalaviSeattle, WA02009-05-07Entertining but not exactly the best Martial Arts filmThe movie is pretty typical of early 90s and follows the same formula as Rocky type movies. It's a bit Cheesy and times and the main actors (other that the Asian guy) are not really martial artists and it sort of shows.

Never the less it is entertaining.B0002O7XUE40A1T6IFWJ1SQ6JEA1T6IFWJ1SQ6JEN. GrayAlright! Who siphoned the blood out of my cat!?!Melbourne, Australia02009-03-22Yeah, I like it.Well, I just found this movie again after years of thinking about it wondering if i'd ever see it again in my life. Granted, revisiting something from my youth did have some nostalgia attached to it, and perhaps it isn't as great a movie as I remembered, but it's still a 'classic' of sorts in my opinion.
If I were a closet martial arts wannabe, I would find a lot of fault with this flick (as some of the '1 star review crew' have done), but I'm comfortable enough with my own ability to not have to point out every flaw with the fighting or plausability of people's performances. It was never intended as an instructional movie, so don't watch it in the hope of learning how to be the 'best of the best.'
But all that aside, the movie is in my opinion well acted with a good script for this genre. The characters are well thought out; I have seen many martial arts movies where the characters are about as well thought out and as deep as the chairs that are used to break over people's heads. This movie is a little better than that, but alas it will always be a cult martial arts flick.
I think it's better than any of Chuck Norris' offerings for instance, and perhaps even gives Steven Segal a run for his money when it comes to fight choreography, and the cheesiness that people seem so upset about is no more than you'd find in a late '80's movie of this genre.
Worth a look at. All those 1 star reviews made me laugh about as much as the parts in this flick that make it likeable. B0002O7XUE40A4BKBXR023PIFA4BKBXR023PIFhartLincoln, NE USA02009-03-09Husband's favorite childhood movieMy husband raved about how he loved this movies as a child, so I ordered it as a Valentines Day gift this year. Good movie if you enjoy 80's martial arts movies like Karate Kid, etc. I liked it.B0002O7XUE50ALSAT7J4P4B2ALSAT7J4P4B2Punk Rock GirlUnited States02009-02-06Drop him like a toilet seat, Tommy! This is one movie I've always watched to put me in a good humor. I love it for so many reasons.

There's butt-kicking. There's name taking. There's just enough ham and cheese to make a sandwich. It has bad 80's motivational music, Eric Roberts in a shockingly awful V-neck sweater with a kid who's supposed to be 5 but looks 10, and some REALLY great fight scenes, so what's not to love? You will NEVER see a physique on planet Earth as ripped as Eric's in this movie. The man must have worked out constantly. He has muscles ON TOP of muscles. His "Alex" is very sweet, humorous and engaging, and when he gets badly hurt in the final fight scene, you find yourself pulling for him. He rocks a "shogun" ponytail too.

The two major upstagers:

Simon Rhee, "Dae Han", the Korean death machine. I defy anyone to watch this movie and NOT want a private army of eye-patch wearing Dae Hans. He can kick through trees. He can kick through bricks. He can kick through 200 phone books and then your Grandma without losing his edge. You never doubt for one second that the guy couldn't put a hurt on Godzilla. Easily one of my favorite characters in the martial arts genre. Simon overcame weakness left behind by childhood meningitis thanks to his parents enrolling him in martial arts classes. (It was a stroke of genius to pair him off against his real life little brother, Phillip Rhee, aka "Tommy", who is also ridiculously talented and figures heavily in the plot.)

Chris Penn, "Travis", butt-whupper du jour from the great state of Texas. He's belligerent, bored, instigating and utterly hilarious. Some of the most memorable lines belong to him. I enjoyed his match fight the most. Even as jerky as he is through the movie, you can't help but like him and hope he destroys his opponent in the same cocky bare-fisted manner that he employed during the huge bar fight (also a must see).

The ending is a surprise. When the Koreans face off against the United States, you think it's going to end predictably, but it doesn't. This isn't a brainless movie.

NOTE: And at the end of the credits on the VHS version, I made the unpleasant discovery of a music video for the movie's wretched theme song. It was a REEKING bad, 80's generic, Eye of the Tiger-style brand of indescribable terror that had me laughing until I almost expired. It had terrible camera work, dancers that were sort of just stuck in there spinning around like dervishes, and a putrescent green, paint-splattered guitar that some guy kept riffing on until I felt so radically awesome that my friend and I were doubled over howling. I was truly disappointed when I didn't get the video on my DVD version.
B0002O7XUE40A1X921694FIU6CA1X921694FIU6CSheekyBakersfield, CA02008-12-29classic 80s martial artsI love this movie, but I think you need a certain appreciation for this type of film. It isn't terribly original, and throughout the film you get the feeling you've 'seen this somewhere before.' You probably have. That said, the movie is still a lot of fun. Yes, it's very formulaic, but the characters are fun, and something about James Earl Jones as a taekwondo coach never ceases to make me smile. The story does well to keep you interested throughout. While not every aspect of this film might fly with serious martial artists, for the most part, it's a good, lazy Saturday type movie. Van Damme looking at his physical best is eye candy for the ladies, and the overall action sequences entertaining for all. Unusual location shots enhance the enjoyment of the film and the quality is of a new cinema release. Its more action movie than strictly sci-fi but definitely worth a watch in the blu-ray format for Van Damme fans and far better than the original release due to its high definition.B0002S94CK41A1DTXX1F4Q0WU9A1DTXX1F4Q0WU9Fadthil B. CamilleFadthilKL, Malaysia12009-03-17Kudos to LionsGate on UniSol!Universal Soldier blu-ray [LionsGate]

As any other movie, I won't delve on storyline or plot as they're rather subjective but I have only this to say:

I'm pleasantly surprised on how good the picture quality of UniSol especially for a low budget and being a 16-year old movie like this one. It's hard to see any grain anywhere, sharpness is dead-on even on darker scenes, very good transfer... brilliant work LionsGate! I also noticed most of Roland Emmerich films have good picture quality transfer on high definition, look at The Patriot & The Day After Tomorrow. Other studios should follow LionsGate footstep on their older catalog title releases on high definition.Product DescriptionMovie DVDAmazon.comDirector Roland Emmerich (Independence Day)fortunately brings some crackle to this otherwise unexciting sci-fi drama about two once-dead, biologically-regenerated soldiers (Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren) who turn against one another when Van Damme's character has memories of his previous life. Emmerich is typically only as good as his scripts, and this one is pretty flat. The two stars do exactly what you'd expect them to do and nothing more. --Tom KeoghB000022TSJUniversal Soldier - The ReturnB001DHXT20Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition)B001PPLIEGQuantum of SolaceB00000FZ1VGhostbustersB00006RCOCBloodsport163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899512Jean-Claude Van Damme899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899500Dolph Lundgren899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video463890General163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video722726011General AAS163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video735708Robots & Androids510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163432Sci-Fi Action510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081730114-for-3 Action & Adventure1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1081810114-for-3 Science Fiction & Fantasy1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411928Baron, Joanne411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419690Damme, Jean Claude Van419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428656Howard, Rance426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434376Lundgren, Dolph432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435026Malone, Joseph434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437682Moeller, Ralf434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440168O'Ross, Ed439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440100Orbach, Jerry439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443362Rhee, Simon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443680Rippy, Leon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447304Snyder, Drew444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450018Trebor, Robert448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451240Walker, Ally451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452056Wells, Tico451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456520Emmerich, Roland456418( E )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video919296Special Editions295214Fully Loaded DVDs251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video354767011All Lionsgate Titles468376Lionsgate Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579552( U )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video728050011Action & Adventure728035011The Cosmotopia DVD Sale: Over 445 Sci-Fi DVDs as Low as $5.99251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video728065011Science Fiction & Fantasy728035011The Cosmotopia DVD Sale: Over 445 Sci-Fi DVDs as Low as $5.99251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video12917411Today's Deals on DVD & Blu-ray44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video672580011Amazon.com Movies & TV: Special Feature 916285171Featured Stores49598011Special Features130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video388863011DVD Deals388861011Features & Promotions (special_merchandising_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - The fight scenes are well done, but maybe you don't care about that. The dialog is not wretched, and the directing's quite good. All in all, as a movie, probably a 4 if you like this kind of thing, a 2 if you don't, a 3 on average.

What kicked it up a notch for me is that it was filmed at my high school alma mater, Woodward Academy. One of the good guy's gets killed right outside the room where I had english with Mrs. Hudson. The administration building is actually a library built after I graduated. The head honcho (and lead bad guy) has an office in what's really the alumni building. Even the Woodward pool makes an appearance - three, actually.

Whereas on-location filming usually takes advantage of locations for outdoor shoots, and does the indoor shots in a sound stage, a tremendous amount of the stuff here was actually filmed inside at Woodward - in the hallways, an office or two, even a classroom.

So, for those of you who attended Woodward, forget about the plot and the other reviews of it. Pick up on the little things - like the school uniforms that closely resemble those of GMA (note: Woodward Academy used to be Georgia Military Academy), the skinhead's mascot (Werewolfs; Woodward is the War Eagles), and what appears in one shot to be a photo of Col. Brewster (who founded GMA).B00005O5B942A2CT2SA6KFE8GCA2CT2SA6KFE8GCStanley RunkRunkdapunkCamp North Pines22004-11-25Treat YourselfTreat Williams is back, still kicking [...] and asking questions later. At this pooint I think most people now identify Williams as The Substitute considering this is his third outing as the mercenary with a heart of gold. Once again he's lured into a deadly mission by an old war pal. He seems to be a sucker for taking on these missions as charity cases coz he never gets paid. Naturally the gig has him as a history teacher at a military academy. He discovers a secret group within the school called the "werewolves". The Werewolves are an angry white supremacist bunch who are in training for a civil war between black and white they believe is happening soon. They like to run around and destroy property owned and supported by minorities. The leader of the group(The always scary Patrick Kilpatrick) is also the commendant of the academy. Big shocker there, huh? Williams goes about his routine of wooing the leading lady, beating up at least one kid in the classroom(with chalkboard erasers!), being all round sneaky and saving the day with a little help from his friends. His mission is to get his buddy's(the guy who sent him on this mission) nephew out of the Werewolves. Being that this is a part 4 in a series it can't help but feel a little stale, but it deals with some scary subject matter(neo-nazis) and that makes it pretty solid and pretty interesting. You'll like it if you like the others. Personally I hope Williams does at least one more of these films.B00005O5B921A1EHXQEV2GYADTA1EHXQEV2GYADTJohn MarkleyOak Lawn, IL USA12004-08-10Well, it's no "Substitute 3"Part four in what is arguably this decade's finest educator-themed action franchise. Treat Williams goes undercover in a Nazi military academy to root out the evil plot that lies within, battling an evil school commandant, brainwashed Nazi students, and a Korean guy whose presence is never adequately explained. You'd think a movie willing to go with a premise that ludicrous would have to be entertaining, but most of it is pretty dull. The movie tends to drag- there's far too many talky scenes about how much the evil white supremacist commandant (palyed by a sort of poor man's John Malkovich) hates atheistic multicultural liberals and not nearly enough action. The ratio of liberal sermonizing to buttkicking is badly miscalculated.
It gets two stars instead of one for a couple of good action sequences (I especially liked the death by bulldozer) and the presence of Treat Williams, who's much too good for this sort of thing. Overall, though, I wouldn't bother unless it's the only thing on cable- there's much more entertaining action fare out there.B00005O5B92062004-05-11Where's Tom Berenger?Whoa! this Movie was horrible! Wouldnt it make more sense to have Tom Berenger in the movie? Why even make a SUB 4 if he's not in it? Also, besides him not being in it, there were many flaws, Dont get me startedDescriptionWhen a clandestine gang of Neo-Nazi students threatens an elite military school, undercover cop Karl Thomasson (Treat Williams) poses as a teacher and plunges into a deadly cat-and-mouse game of shifting alliances and murderous treachery in a one-man war to prevent an academic apocalypse!B00005O5B4Substitute 2: School's OutB00005O5AZThe Substitute/The Substitute 3: Winner Takes AllB0000694WJThe Principal6305803773Best Of The Best 3: No Turning Back/ Best Of The Best 4: Without Warning6304490127The Substitute163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video14133641Heroes291421By Theme163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video14133691Identities291421By Theme163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163310Thrillers163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video1081730114-for-3 Action & Adventure1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1081770114-for-3 Drama1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video409726Abell, Tim409682( A )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422428Everhart, Angie421742( E )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video422868Ferguson, J Don422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video423984Fricke, Grayson422476( F )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video431390Kilpatrick, Patrick430468( K )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video439574Nunn, Bill438726( N )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443362Rhee, Simon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452728Williams, Treat451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video461094Radler, Robert461084( R )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video354767011All Lionsgate Titles468376Lionsgate Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579548( S )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoRKGZS5QBCOXYTeachersET91WCZ322B9Boot Camp Movies.6305161992http://www.amazon.com/Showdown-Little-Tokyo-Dolph-Lundgren/dp/6305161992%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D630516199251767http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FAEE4DXML._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FAEE4DXML._SL160_.jpg160117http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FAEE4DXML.jpg500365http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FAEE4DXML._SL30_.jpg3022http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FAEE4DXML._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FAEE4DXML._SL160_.jpg160117http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FAEE4DXML.jpg500365Dolph LundgrenBrandon LeeCary-Hiroyuki TagawaTia CarrereToshirô Obata1.33:1R (Restricted)DVDWarner BrothersMark IrwinMark L. It's basically Drago (Rocky 4) vs Tsung (Mortal Kombat 1). That pretty much sums up the whole plot. But with all the mindless violence who really cares. Gun battles, martial arts, Samurai sword slashing and gory deaths are the order of the day, not to mention plenty of beautiful ladies treated like playthings and shedding clothes at every opportunity. Despite the women and guns, there is some kind of story: Kenner (Lundgren) is on a mission of vengeance. His parents were killed when he was little by crazy Yakuza thug Yoshida (Tagawa), an ice-cool super-villain now specializing in drug dealing and generally looking mean. Kenner, adept in the Samurai ways, grows to be a law-abiding copper who's now right on his tail. Male bonding ensues when policeman Johnny Murata (Lee, in his US debut), a hip-talking dude with street credentials, is assigned as Kenner's partner in crime, and all hell simply breaks loose. You could say that there's an artistic angle to all this fighting, shooting and banging, but then that would be a lie - Showdown in Little Tokyo is a classic in a completely different sense of the word.630516199220AJKWF4W7QD4NSAJKWF4W7QD4NSN. DurhamBig EvilPhiladelphia, PA12008-07-26So bad that it's almost goodShowdown in Little Tokyo is one of those generic action movies from the early 90's that is so bad that's kind of enjoyable to watch as trashy entertainment. What makes it even more enjoyable is the fact that it stars a young Brandon Lee as a wise-cracking cop who teams up with a tough guy cop (Dolph Lundgren) to take on a Yakuza drug boss (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). Showdown in Little Tokyo features atrocious (and occasionally funny) dialogue, tons of cliche story elements (the bad guy also killed Lundgren's parents when he was a child), sloppy editing, and a training montage to boot! Tia Carrere has a thankless role as a damsel that gets wooed by Dolph, and the action and fight scenes are a mix of sloppily put together (the concluding fight during the parade) to well choreographed (most of Lee's sequences). All in all, Showdown in Little Tokyo should be unbelievably bad, but it has a sense of charm about it's comic book-style mayhem, and seeing Brandon Lee work his magic (there just isn't enough of him here) is reason enough to see this flick.630516199251A19ATJSKDZD9EZA19ATJSKDZD9EZAdam Stapletondrunken sailorAtlanta, GA12008-06-18"You have the right to be dead"Showdown in Little Tokyo is one of those rare early-90's screen gems that is so terribly scripted that, today, it makes for one of the funniest movie going experiences you can have.

Essentially it's a revenge story where Dolph Lundgren plays a cop out for revenge against the yakuza mob boss who murdered his family when he was just a wee little gaijin living in Japan.
And of course, since he was raised in Japan, he knows martial arts, how to weild a sword and even build japanese style houses by hand (I'll get to that later in the review). Seeing as how he posesses all of these great combat skills, it's no wonder that Lundgren's character ended up becoming a cop in Los Angeles.

Soon Lundgren meets up with his new partner, played by Brandon Lee in one of his first major movie roles, the son of a dentist who grew up in "the valley" who also happens to know karate so naturally he became a cop as well.

Together this dynamic duo takes on the yakuza, who all wear great stereotypical early-90's attire that makes them look like they just stepped off the set of a Phil Collins video or the Arsenio Hall Show. Some of them even wear the exact same suits in the same scenes which makes them look like updated versions of the henchmen from the old 60's Batman TV show.

Some of the most fantastically ridiculous action scenes take place from there including Lundgren lifting a car onto its side with his bare hands, a hilarious bathhouse fight scene with a fat japanese guy complete with a Wilhelm scream and of course a scene in which the two heroes fight off 50 bad guys trying to invade Lundgren's japanese style home. That's right, he built it his self, we learn that when Tia Carrere's character says "Nice house," and Lundgren says "I built it," and Tia says "Somehow I knew that."

And that brings me to my next point, the awesomely horrible and incredibly funny dialog that the stars of Showdown in Little Tokyo have to belt out is so head-scratchingly awful that you have to ask yourself questions like "what was the writer thinking? are they for real? are they TRYING to be hilarious?"

I could spout off any of the hundreds of hilarious lines from this movie, but it's so much fun watching it yourself and laughing at them that I won't. Ok, maybe just one. Brandon Lee's character actually says to Lundgren "In case we die, I want you to know that you have the biggest d*** I've ever seen on a man," to which Lundgren says: "I don't know what to say." Well neither do I guys, neither do I.

Showdown in Little Tokyo, whether it was intentional or not, stands as a comedic masterpiece in early-90's cinema. I'm not exaggerating either, it really is freaking hilarous, see for yourself.630516199250ANLEL1J3ZS8YPANLEL1J3ZS8YPShiloh Kremer02008-06-10Brandon Lee and Dolph Lungren Together!Amazing movie! Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 02/03/2004 Starring: Dolph Lundgren Brandon Lee Run time: 78 minutes Rating: R Director: Mark L. LesterAmazon.comShowdown in Little Tokyo is a 1991 martial arts action-comedy that, in pitting Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee as L.A. cops against Japanese drug dealers, plays like a B-movie Tango and Cash or Lethal Weapon 2 (both released just two years before). Between career highs in Rocky IV (1985) and Universal Soldier (1992), Lundgren looked as if he might make it big at the box office, and clearly wanting to be the new Schwarzenegger he is here directed by Mark L Lester, who had earlier helmed Ah-nold's Commando (1985). In the event both actor and director headed for straight-to-video territory, while Lee (Bruce's son) went on to The Crow. The 75-minute running time suggests the studio lost confidence and seriously cut the movie though, as the space between the action is filled with nothing but cringe-inducing dialogue, thriller clichés, and Lundgren "romancing" Tia Carrere, it still makes sense. Basing its title on John Carpenter's 1986 fantasy-comedy Big Trouble in Little China and anticipating Rush Hour (1998), Showdown in Little Tokyo alternates between crude tongue-in-cheek moments and action so ludicrous it's unintentionally hilarious . A camp disaster that simply defies belief, this is so-bad-it's-good entertainment. --Gary S. I did both of those in two times in which I watched this DVD! The first time I loved this. On the second viewing, I hated it. Oh well, at least I got a lot of laughs out of it one time.

It's simply a spoof - an outrageous one at that - on these wild Hong Kong martial arts films that have become popular in recent years.

Babies kung-fu fighting?? Tongues in people's mouthing fighting? Animals flying in the air doing drop kicks? Horrible (on purpose) dubbing in which the voices don't match the person saying them? Bad voices, too! A dog that barks but you don't hear him until 5 seconds later? Yup, that and a whole lot more are in here. Many are funny gags, many are incredibly stupid. They all added up to a fun viewing experience the first time but too stupid to watch again.

Having an absurd sense of humor is a must. This is all tongue-in-cheek material (well, most of the time.) Wait...do not run away just yet. Unlike the mass of crappy parody movies that are produced these days, this movie is actually very funny. If you are into the Japanese Martial Arts genre, you need to pick this one up. This movie is a parody of that specific genre. Luckily, you do not actually have to known anything about the movies it is spoofing to find this movie laugh-out-loud funny. Even if you hate martial arts movies, you will enjoy this one.

The movie starts in a small village. Master Pain and his group of thugs enter a home looking for a baby. The baby could affect their evil plans in the future if he is not stopped now. After the baby takes down most of the gang, Master Pain burns down the home in hopes to kill the child. Unfortunately, the baby narrowly barely escapes the flames. His family has been killed, so he is raised by the local wildlife.

The baby would become known as "The Chosen One." Chosen One will be forced to fight off Master Pain's henchmen for the rest of his life. However, after growing into an adult, he encounters Pain in a nearby village. Chosen One now seeks revenge on Pain, who will change his name to Betty. "Isn't Betty a woman's name" is the question running through your and Chosen One's mind. Betty is still a force to be reckoned with despite his feminine name.

This is not a intelligent comedy. Kung Pow expects you to lose about 20 IQ before viewing it. There is nothing wrong with a stupid (in a funny way) comedy every now and then. Some of the jokes are insanely humorous; other jokes are lukewarm stupid comedy. All of it mixes fairly well together. You will see references to The Lion King and The Matrix at certain points of the movie that will make you laugh. The other idiotic characters will have you laughing for a long time.

The only problem with this film is that the video quality is low sometimes. Kung Pow takes pieces from other Japanese movies that originally played in the 70s. I enjoy this idea, but some might get annoyed by it. The ending credits show how they achieved this in more detail.

I wish a sequel were made for this movie. There is plenty of reference to the making of a sequel in this film, but no sequel has been made to my knowledge. This movie has become a Cult Classic and the sequel would probably ruin this movie anyway. I want you to pick up this movie right now if you enjoy a fun spoof every now and then.B00005JKXE40A3T5NSG7LMRY0AA3T5NSG7LMRY0AMichael GmirkinBeaverton, Oregon, USA02008-09-05Holy cow! I mean... That hardly even seems possible! This has to be one of the strangest, funniest spoofs of martial arts I've ever seen. I watched Kung Fu Hustle, but really didn't find it especially funny. Kung Pow, on the other hand, had us laughing just about from beginning to end.

The long and short of it, for people who don't know the schtick, is that the movie's creator basically found an old 1970's kung fu movie and either used green screen or reshot parts of the movie to put himself into the action. He also revoiced much of the dialogue to completely remake the movie into his own twisted vision of a kung fu spoof. The end result is occasional hilarity, occasional groans, a few slow moments but an overall great spoof.

If you love kung fu movies, you'll probably appreciate this spoof of the 70's revenge genre. If you haven't watched any good martial arts movies, why are you watching this? Go rent Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Iron Monkey or The Forbidden Kingdom.DescriptionWriter/director Steve Oedekerk (The Nutty Professor and Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls) creates an off-the-wall comedy and a new martial arts genre that substantially alters dubbed action footage from a 1970's martial arts picture with a brand new twist in the story line and altered dialogue. The story follows The Chosen One (Oedekerk) as he seeks to avenge the death of his parents at the hands of the evil and seemingly indestructible kung fu legend, Master Pain.Amazon.comKung Pow! Enter the Fist is best enjoyed with low expectations, if only because it might surprise you with genuine belly laughs. Writer-director Steve Oedekerk uses digital trickery to make himself a costar in the 1976 Hong Kong action flick Tiger & Crane Fist, just as Woody Allen turned a Japanese spy thriller into the comedy spoof What's Up, Tiger Lily? The results are both technically impressive and stupendously stupid. Oedekerk is blandly appealing as "the Chosen One," who sets out to avenge the evil Master "Betty" Pain for killing his family when he was still a kung fu-fighting infant. This stock setup is a cheap excuse for Oedekerk's 80-minute buffet of chop-socky spoofery, with gags lifted from The Matrix, Oedekerk's "Thumbation" comedies, and the rich legacy of Hong Kong action. Featuring "gopher-chucks," a kung fu cow, aliens from France, and enough bad dialogue to choke a crouching tiger, Kung Pow! is mildly spicy, but mostly it's full of nuts. --Jeff ShannonB000QGEB12Kung Fu Hustle (Axe-Kickin' Edition)B000286RNYShaolin SoccerB000244GOAKung Phooey!B001H5X7I4Tropic ThunderB00005O3VCMonty Python and the Holy Grail (Special Edition)163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video290941Comic Action163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video463890General163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video722726011General AAS163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163371General163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video291141Obsessive Quests291103By Theme163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video722746011General AAS163378Parody & Spoof163357Comedy404276Genres130DVD139452Video440280Outerbridge, Jen Sung439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443362Rhee, Simon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447700Stahelski, Chad444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video460476Oedekerk, Steve460446( O )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908716All Fox Titles90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908720General908718Action90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video908722Comedy90871420th Century Fox Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579532( K )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405387011PG-13405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620920112000 & Newer562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603123011Closed Caption603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603113011Dolby603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671508011Dolby671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452VideoR3R0RJL787OJOIBest Alternative Comedy EverR1M1YFMCBB24UUdvds to ever rewatchR3DKRXB02TRHJJThe Ultimate Spoof Comedy MoviesR2T8J5Y6A0UMFOSpoofyR7543XWL5OQLBSeen / Need to See 2002R348XWWQ9A2USDVDs for NerdsR27MO858Z6RCBHMy Favorite Books, Movies, and Games!R3KH319CX9T0N5My Favorite ComediesR74NE3IGVTR5BMy DVD Collection Vol. 1RRPAWBOXOY0AXMy DVD Collection pt. 60784011532http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Soldier-Jean-Claude-Van-Damme/dp/0784011532%3FSubscriptionId%3D1DWXK7HJTP76664KT902%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D078401153283659http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B9W9H3ZDL._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B9W9H3ZDL._SL160_.jpg160117http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B9W9H3ZDL.jpg475347http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B9W9H3ZDL._SL30_.jpg3022http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B9W9H3ZDL._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B9W9H3ZDL._SL160_.jpg160117http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B9W9H3ZDL.jpg475347Jean-Claude Van DammeDolph LundgrenAlly WalkerEd O'RossJerry Orbach1.85:1R (Restricted)DVDAllen ShapiroCraig BaumgartenDonald HeitzerJoel B. Other studios should follow LionsGate footstep on their older catalog title releases on high definition.Amazon.comBefore they made a mountain of money as the creators of Independence Day and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin teamed up for this action flick disguised as a science fiction thriller. Muscle hunks Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren play embattled Vietnam soldiers who killed each other in combat and are revived 25 years later as semi-android "UniSols" in a high-tech army of the near future. Their memories were supposedly wiped clean, but flashbacks occur to remind them of their bitter hatred (Lundgren committed wartime atrocities; Van Damme had tried to stop him), and the warriors resume their tenacious battle while a journalist (Ally Walker) uncovers the truth about the secret UniSol program. With energy to spare, the standard action sequences are adequate for anyone with a short attention span. And besides, with Van Damme and Lundgren in the lead roles, who needs dialogue? --Jeff ShannonB000022TSJUniversal Soldier - The ReturnB001DHXT20Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition)B001PPLIEGQuantum of SolaceB00000FZ1VGhostbustersB00006RCOCBloodsport163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899512Jean-Claude Van Damme899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899500Dolph Lundgren899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video463890General163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video722726011General AAS163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video735708Robots & Androids510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163432Sci-Fi Action510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video411928Baron, Joanne411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419690Damme, Jean Claude Van419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428656Howard, Rance426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434376Lundgren, Dolph432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435026Malone, Joseph434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437682Moeller, Ralf434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440168O'Ross, Ed439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440100Orbach, Jerry439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443362Rhee, Simon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443680Rippy, Leon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447304Snyder, Drew444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450018Trebor, Robert448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451240Walker, Ally451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452056Wells, Tico451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456520Emmerich, Roland456418( E )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video468378Top Sellers468376Lionsgate Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video354767011All Lionsgate Titles468376Lionsgate Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579552( U )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671501011Letterboxed390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - 1999562084011Decade (feature_three_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video617866011English598208011Original Language (theme_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video603119011Letterboxed603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671505011Standard Edition603112011Special Editions (feature_four_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video643791011Grade Level (feature_five_browse-bin)643792011Preschool643793011Kindergarten643794011Elementary School643800011Middle & High School643808011College643809011Post-Graduate386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671506011Audio Type (feature_six_browse-bin)671507011Digital Sound671508011Dolby671509011Surround Sound386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video3DMY27NQ43I5TFavorite Jean Claude Van Damme movies!!1VDSLZ3PRCS0BVan Damme's best to worstISGV4ZZAUYY2When Men are not Men! Emmerich is typically only as good as his scripts, and this one is pretty flat. The two stars do exactly what you'd expect them to do and nothing more. --Tom KeoghB000022TSJUniversal Soldier - The ReturnB001DHXT20Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition)B001PPLIEGQuantum of SolaceB00000FZ1VGhostbustersB00006RCOCBloodsport163306General163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899512Jean-Claude Van Damme899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video899500Dolph Lundgren899482Action Stars163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video463890General163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video722726011General AAS163307Martial Arts163296Action & Adventure404276Genres130DVD139452Video163390General163379Drama404276Genres130DVD139452Video163442General163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video735708Robots & Androids510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video163432Sci-Fi Action510839011Science Fiction163431Science Fiction & Fantasy404276Genres130DVD139452Video1693950114-for-3 All DVDs1081720114-for-3 DVD251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video411928Baron, Joanne411316( B )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video419690Damme, Jean Claude Van419544( D )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video428656Howard, Rance426368( H )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video434376Lundgren, Dolph432148( L )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video435026Malone, Joseph434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video437682Moeller, Ralf434574( M )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440168O'Ross, Ed439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video440100Orbach, Jerry439610( O )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443362Rhee, Simon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video443680Rippy, Leon442578( R )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video447304Snyder, Drew444858( S )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video450018Trebor, Robert448792( T )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video451240Walker, Ally451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video452056Wells, Tico451116( W )404278Actors & Actresses251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video456520Emmerich, Roland456418( E )403502Directors251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video468378Top Sellers468376Lionsgate Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video354767011All Lionsgate Titles468376Lionsgate Home Entertainment468374Studio Specials251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video579552( U )579510Titles251273011Custom Stores44261011Specialty Stores130DVD139452Video387546011DVD387545011Format (binding)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video390121011Widescreen390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video671501011Letterboxed390118011Picture Format (format)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405388011R405383011MPAA Rating (feature_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video405391011US & CA DVDs: Region 1405390011Region (feature_two_browse-bin)386709011Refinements130DVD139452Video5620910111990 - It has an intellectual content that is much higher than most movies in its genre.

The killer in this movie has a unique method of execution each victim is killed in the style of a martyred saint. A message with a bible reference is then placed in the corpse's mouth. The director of Blowback, Mark L. Lester, is a prolific maker of thrilling movies with such films as Commando and Big Trouble in Little China to his credit. 630590947440A1G5LJ8T1IGYC5A1G5LJ8T1IGYC5MICHAEL TAYLORSNAKEFIST2RICHMOND, VA USA02004-07-03SUSPENSEFUL MOVIE THAT NEVER LETS UP FOR A MINUTEA RELIGIOUS SERIAL KILLER [JAMES REMAR] IS BOUGHT BACK TO LIFE AS AN ASSASSIN SHORTLY AFTER HIS EXECUTION. A standard cop vs. serial killer movie, it sticks to the cliches of the genre. The killer's "twist" is that he kills each victim in the style of a martyred saint, with a bible reference in a test tube placed in the mouth. Perhaps the intention is to echo other recent screen psychos like Seven's John Doe or Silence of the Lambs' Buffalo Bill. Blowback's villain is, however, like all the other characters, lacking in character depth and ultimately unconvincing. Mark L. Lester, the director, has been a prolific producer of mediocre action movies, notably Commando and Big Trouble in Little China. Some of these can perhaps survive as late night movies to be watched over a few beers. Still, even among the lesser cop movies, there are a lot that should be seen before this one. Try Fallen or Bone Collector. Regarding the DVD, it's 3:4 format, with no features (not that you'd want them)Product DescriptionWhen inspector don morell witnesses the state execution of serial killer claude whitman he thinks he can finally close the case that has almost destroyed his marriage sanity and life. But when former jury members begin to be brutally murdered one by one he recognizes whitman in the cryptic biblical messages. Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. The fight scenes are well done, but maybe you don't care about that.

Brewster (who founded GMA).B00005A1SR42A2CT2SA6KFE8GCA2CT2SA6KFE8GCStanley RunkRunkdapunkCamp North Pines22004-11-25Treat YourselfTreat Williams is back, still kicking [...] and asking questions later. Personally I hope Williams does at least one more of these films.B00005A1SR21A1EHXQEV2GYADTA1EHXQEV2GYADTJohn MarkleyOak Lawn, IL USA12004-08-10Well, it's no "Substitute 3"Part four in what is arguably this decade's finest educator-themed action franchise.
Overall, though, I wouldn't bother unless it's the only thing on cable- there's much more entertaining action fare out there.B00005A1SR2062004-05-11Where's Tom Berenger?Whoa! this Movie was horrible! Wouldnt it make more sense to have Tom Berenger in the movie? Why even make a SUB 4 if he's not in it?
