The film depicts the rivalry of Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, stage magicians in late 19th- and early 20th-century London. Angier blames Borden for a tragic accident, and a competitive one-upmanship ensues in which both magicians, obsessed with creating the best stage illusion, stop at nothing to uncover the secrets of each other's acts, with tragic results. The screenplay is adapted from Christopher Priest's award-winning 1995 novel of the same name.
